Solar dryers using phase change materials buffer heat, yet the combined influence of airflow regime and PCM placement on melting remains underexplored. A controlled like-for-like study fixed geometry and PCM properties while varying placement and operating conditions. A 3D transient CFD model simulated a forced-convection dryer with RT28HC over Re = 3000–9000 and inlet temperatures Ti = 50–60 °C. Raising either Re or Ti shortened melt time, and three-wall coverage melted faster and more uniformly than a rear-wall-only layout. For three walls, melt time dropped from 13 h (50 °C, Re = 3000) to 7 h (60 °C, Re = 9000) (−46 %) for the rear wall it fell from 19 h to 11 h (−42 %). A 10 °C increase in Ti reduced overall melt time by 4 h across Re. Practically, three wall PCM with Re ≥ 6000 at Ti = 60 °C achieved reliably 7–9 h melting, enabling late afternoon heat release without auxiliary heating.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ2Effects of İnclined Plate in a Channel to Control Melting of PCM in a Body İnserted on the Bottom Wall
Öztop, H.F.; Bakır, E.; Selimefendigil, F.; Gür, M.; Coşanay, H.
A two-dimensional time-dependent computational analysis was carried out to examine the effects of inclined plate on melting time of Phase Change Material (PCM) filled square block on the bottom wall of a channel. Solution of the governing equations are performed by using finite volume method. The RT25HC material is chosen as PCM. The study is done for different parameters of inclination angle of the plate and Reynolds number. It is observed that the inclined plate can be used to control of melting time of PCM in a block as well as flow field and temperature distribution in the channel. Using of acceleration angle as θ = 110° accelerates the melting time of PCM inside the block. Thus, mass fraction rate increases 4 times with application of inclined thin plate.

In order to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the battery system in electric vehicles, the heat generated in the batteries must be rapidly removed from the system. Therefore, a battery thermal management system is needed to ensure that the battery pack operates at appropriate temperatures. This study focuses on improving the battery thermal management system in electric vehicles. For this purpose, two different types of battery modules with new air channel design were created. The temperature distribution, maximum temperature difference and pressure drop in the battery modules were numerically investigated with computational fluid dynamics. In addition, the effect of three different air velocities (1 m/s, 2 m/s and 3 m/s) on the battery temperature was evaluated. The results showed that the maximum temperature and maximum temperature difference in the battery decreased with the increase of the air inlet velocity. It was observed that the maximum temperature difference obtained for design 2 and design 3 decreased in the range of 15.01–17.93 % and 7.25–12.22 %, respectively, compared to Design 1.

Işık, Erdem; Tuğan, Volkan
The shell-and-tube heat exchanger (STHE) is one of the most widely used types of heat exchangers in industry. For this reason, studies conducted to improve the performance of STHEs are of great importance. In this study, a single-shell- and double-tube-pass STHE was designed, and a three-dimensional and steady-state flow analysis of this heat exchanger was conducted using the CFD method. The purpose of the analysis was to investigate the effect of baffle cut and mass flow rate of the fluid on the shell side on heat transfer and pressure drop by using the ANSYS Fluent, which is a type of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software. For this aim, oil and water are used as working fluids in the shell and tubes of the STHE, respectively. Four different mass flow rates (0.6 kg/s, 0.8 kg/s, 1.0 kg/s, and 1.2 kg/s) are used for the fluid in the shell. In the analysis, three different STHEs with baffle cuts of 20%, 30%, and 40% are compared. According to the results of the CFD analysis, baffle cut plays an important role in heat transfer and pressure drop. The highest heat transfer per pressure drop was achieved for the STHE with 40% baffle cut and the lowest was achieved for the STHE with 20% baffle cut.
