The effect of a professional development program on e-learning readiness and digital fluency: a study with higher education academics

    Demiralp, Demet; Gunduzalp, Seda

Purpose This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a targeted professional development program in enhancing two critical competencies for higher education academics in the digital age: e-learning readiness and digital fluency.Design/methodology/approach This study used a pretest-posttest control group model within a quasi-experimental framework with 46 academics. The experimental group (n = 23) participated in a six-week training program, whereas the control group (n = 23) received no intervention. Data were collected using validated scales for e-learning readiness and digital fluency.Findings Findings demonstrated that the experimental group experienced considerable gains in both e-learning readiness and digital fluency scores. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the control group, providing strong evidence of the program's effectiveness.Originality/value Unlike most descriptive studies in the field, this study provides quasi-experimental evidence of program effectiveness regarding professional development interventions. It offers an empirically validated model from a T & uuml;rkiye higher education context, providing valuable insights for university administrators and policymakers internationally who are facing similar challenges.

A research on effect of certificate trainings on pre-service teachers' awareness of psychological resilience

Çankaya, Ibrahim; Balikçi, Servet; Bek, Hafiz

The aim of this research is to determine whether certification training has a significant effect on pre-service teachers' awareness. In the research, the awareness level of pre-service teachers who participated in psychological resilience training was compared. The research is a one-group pre-test post-test quasi-experimental research design. The research group consisted of 25 pre-service teachers who participated in the psychological resilience trainings organized by Uşak University Lifelong Learning Center in the spring semester of the 2024-2025 academic year. The research group received resilience awareness training consisting of two sessions and lasting 1.5 weeks. Data were collected using the brief psychological resilience scale developed by Doğan. It was determined that there was a significant difference (p < .05) between the psychological resilience awareness levels of the students before and after the certificate training. In the 21st century, certificate trainings will be provided in addition to the university diploma in order to provide the skills that institutions and the business world care about. Certificates will be among the primary reasons for teacher selection.

Performance evaluation of Turkish Universities by an integrated Bayesian BWM-TOPSIS model

    Gul, Muhammet; Yucesan, Melih

This study aims to develop a university ranking model with the aid of performance measures in the “University monitoring and evaluation reports-2019” published by the Council of Higher Education Institution in Turkey. In this context, some of the performance criteria stated in these reports are filtered and 34 sub-criteria under five main criteria are weighted using the Bayesian Best-Worst Method (BBWM). Then, 189 listed public and private universities are ranked using the TOPSIS multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) method. We have adopted the MCDM concept because many evaluation criteria/sub-criteria and alternative universities are taken into account. For this study, we apply an integrated MCDM model. First, we use BBWM to accomplish the first goal and adopt the TOPSIS method for the second purpose, using the BBWM results. Our purpose in using BBWM is due to its probabilistic structure that reduces the loss of information when handling group decisions. In this context, the evaluations of 11 academic experts are combined and a solid weighting is made by obtaining the credal rankings of performance criteria. Using TOPSIS is its logic of proximity to ideal and the ability to evaluate many alternatives. In the context of the study, state-private university-based, nomenclature of territorial units for statistics-2 (NUTS-2)-based and classical geographical regions-based rankings are also discussed. The study seeks to help universities optimize their performance efficiently. The results of the study can be adapted as a reference for other educational institutions and public institutions in their efforts to evaluate, improve their performance and form various policies.

A scale to measure sustainable campus services in higher education: “Sustainable Service Quality”

Ozdemir, Yasal; Kaya, Sema Kayapinar; Turhan, Erkan

This study aims to develop a measuring tool which can address two independent research areas in the literature: Sustainability in higher education and service quality in higher education. Both subjects are studied independently in the literature, showing a need for an integrated approach that bridges these areas. For achieving this purpose, a new scale was developed based on a questionnaire applied to two universities in Turkey. The scale aimed to measure the perceptions of the students regarding the quality of sustainable campus services. The questionnaire consisted of 22 questions on several aspects of campus services which are related to sustainability. A total of 234 samples were used for Exploratory Factor Analysis for determining the underlying structures in the data set. The scale was validated with satisfactory Kaiser-Meyer Olkin and Bartlett's test results. Five dimensions were extracted, which represent sustainable service quality. After validation, the scale was applied to two universities located in geographically and socio-economically different regions of Turkey. The term chosen for the proposed combined scale is Sustainable Service Quality (SusServQual). With additional data, t-tests were applied to 308 students aiming to compare the two universities based on perceived quality scores. The results show that the university located in the socio-economically more developed region performed better regarding the overall satisfaction score and four of the five dimensions. The scores were also weighted utilizing a modified method of Analytical Hierarchy Process. Instead of crisp numbers which forces the decision maker to think in mathematical terms while comparing criteria, linguistic terms, each of which corresponds to a fuzzy number were used. Thus, a more accurate evaluation was obtained where the decision maker's subjectivity and ambiguity of the situation are important.
