A Critical Analysis of the Apprenticeship Discourse on the Workplace Experiences of Trainees Attending Vocational Training Centres

    Gün, Servet

Vocational Training Centres (VTCs) are one of the two types of secondary-level training schools in Türkiye. As a result of a series of recent regulations VTCs enrolment has increased, and VTCs have been positioned as a significant player in vocational training to meet skilled or semi-skilled labour demand of different sectors. Over four hundred and twenty thousand students are currently attending the centres. Viewed as the best way to strengthen the link between vocational education and employment opportunities, VTCs have recently faced intense criticism for allegedly legitimizing child labour and causing child work-related homicides. As a result, VTCs has started to be questioned along with the paradigm on which they are based. To hear from the trainees themselves what exactly is going on in VTCs, a fieldwork was carried out. During the fieldwork VTCs in two different industrial zones (OSTİM and Şaşmaz) in Ankara were visited, and thirteen apprentices were interviewed by employing a qualitative method. In this framework the data were generated to analyze if this type of vocational training can be seen as a form of child labour and test the argument that work-related homicides are result from trainees themselves.

Intergenerational transmission of parenting roles in the context of social learning theory

    Akgül, Ceylan Sülü

This study aims to examine how parenting roles are learned and transmitted across generations within the framework of social learning theory. The discipline of social work not only observes intergenerational transmission across different social groups but also seeks to reduce the effects of disadvantage and past traumas while promoting individuals’ well-being and empowerment. In this context, the study was conducted using a qualitative research design and a purposive sampling method. Structured interviews were carried out with 30 parents (15 mothers and 15 fathers) selected from among 56 participants who had children under the age of 18. The data obtained were coded under three main themes using the MAXQDA 2024 program: Parenting Perception, Intergenerational Transmission, and Social and Cultural Factors. Descriptive analysis revealed that participants defined parenting through values such as love, attention, empathy, and responsibility, along with discipline and setting boundaries. It was also found that motherhood and fatherhood roles were expressed sometimes through traditional gender norms and sometimes through a more democratic and shared understanding. Furthermore, parenting roles were identified not as purely instinctive but as practices learned from family-of-origin experiences and reshaped through conscious choices. Social norms, elders, social environments, and modern sources of information were also found to have significant influences on parenting attitudes. The findings reveal the connection between parenting and the social, cultural and intergenerational learning process, revealing the importance of social learning for social work.

Development of the intention to be physically active scale: A validity and reliability study in the context of physical education and sport

    Şahin, Aykut; Öner, Burak

The aim of this study is to develop a scale for the intention to be physically active within the context of physical education and sports, and to examine its psychometric properties. The scale development process began with the creation of an item pool based on a theoretical foundation and establishing content validity through expert opinions. The research was conducted with data obtained from 439 middle school students. To determine the construct validity of the scale, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value (0.91) and the results of the Bartlett’s Test of Sphericity showed that the data were suitable for factor analysis. In the first stage, during the factor extraction process of the EFA conducted with data from 154 students, the eigenvalue rule (>1), scree plot, and parallel analysis results were evaluated together. As a result of the EFA, it was determined that the scale had a single-factor structure with 13 items in a 5-point Likert type format, and this single factor explained 47.07% of the total variance. In the second stage, the CFA conducted with data from 285 students revealed that the model had acceptable fit indices (x2/df=2.40, CFI=.94, GFI=.92, TLI=.93, RMSEA=.07, SRMR=.04). To prove construct validity, the CR value was calculated as 0.91 and the AVE value as 0.44. The CR value being well above the threshold supported the convergent validity evidence for the AVE value. Reliability analyses of the scale indicated that Cronbach’s Alpha was 0.90 and McDonald’s Omega was 0.91, demonstrating high internal consistency coefficients. Higher scores on the scale indicate that students have a greater intention to be physically active in the future. As a result, it was determined that the intention to be physically active scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool for physical education settings.

Leisure time loneliness: A study on youth offices

    Yıldız, Metin

This study aims to examine university students’ perceptions of loneliness experienced during their free time within the framework of social isolation, difficulties in forming bonds, social access difficulties, and emotional deprivation. The research was conducted to determine the levels of leisure loneliness among students participating in Munzur University Youth Office activities and to analyze whether these levels differed according to various demographic variables. The research group consists of 301 university students (158 women, 143 men) who volunteered to participate in activities during the 2024–2025 academic year. The “Personal Information Form” and the “Leisure Time Loneliness Scale” were used in the data collection process. The data obtained were analyzed using the SPSS 26.0 program; frequency, percentage, t-test, One-Way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD tests. The findings indicate that students’ levels of leisure loneliness are generally low to moderate; although they participate in social interactions, they experience limitations in forming deep and sustainable bonds. Although gender and age were found to have no significant effect on overall loneliness levels, men were found to be more prone to emotional deprivation, while students aged 24 and above were found to be more prone to isolation. Additionally, it was determined that first-year students experience greater difficulty in forming social bonds, students who participate more frequently in youth office activities have lower levels of leisure loneliness, and students in the high-income group experience greater difficulty in terms of emotional fulfillment. In conclusion, it was found that levels of leisure loneliness did not show a significant difference according to demographic variables such as gender, age, and educational status. However, it was determined that variables such as frequency of participation in youth office activities, social bonding processes, and emotional deprivation were more closely related to leisure loneliness

Rol temelli tutkunluk ölçeği: türkçeye uyarlama, geçerlik ve güvenirlik çalışması

    Sezgin, Eray Ekin

Place of Global Issues in EFL Lecturers’ Teaching Agenda in Türkiye

    Sahinkarakas, Sehnaz; Özel, Sezai

This study examines English as a Foreign Language (EFL) lecturers’ views on integrating global issues into language teaching in Turkish higher education. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, data were collected from 414 EFL lecturers across 12 universities via a questionnaire, followed by semi-structured interviews with 29 participants. Quantitative results indicate that EFL lecturers generally support the integration of global issues into EFL instruction. While gender, age, or overall teaching experience did not yield significant differences, prior experience specifically with global-issue-based instruction emerged as a significant factor. Among the themes, environmental issues were prioritized due to their perceived familiarity and pedagogical accessibility. In contrast, language imperialism was rated as the least important theme. Qualitative findings further clarify that this reluctance toward language imperialism stems from its ideological sensitivity, despite its relevance to culture and linguistic awareness. The study concludes with practical implications for language teachers, curriculum designers, and materials developers.

Predicting middle school students' academic achievement in mathematics with aAnew hybrid approach

    Dogan, Gurkan; Demiralp, Demet

The academic achievement of middle school students is one of the critical steps in their educational journey that affects their future academic and career prospects. During this transition period, students are faced with a variety of challenges related to their families, schools, and the individual themselves. Research shows that academic performance during these formative years is critical for future educational success and overall life success. Therefore, addressing students' academic achievement, which depends on various factors during this period, is of particular importance for both institutional and individual planning and orientation in the future. In this study, a new hybrid approach based on artificial neural networks that enables automatic analysis of data on family, school, and individual factors affecting middle school students' academic achievement in mathematics is proposed. A publicly available student performance dataset was used for training and testing the proposed hybrid approach and other models. This dataset consists of data such as mathematics grades, family information, residential information, and health status information for 395 students enrolled in two public schools in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The proposed approach achieved an R2 score of 88.6% in experimental studies with this data set, providing approximately 3% higher accuracy than its closest competitor among other methods in the literature.

Physical education and sports teacher candidates’ perspectives on meaning in life and smartphone addiction: a mixed-method study

    Şahin, Aykut; Öner, Burak

Objective – This study aims to examine the relationship between physical education and sports (PES) teacher candidates’ levels of meaning in life and smartphone addiction, and to explore in depth how this relationship occurs through qualitative data. Methods – The study was conducted using the explanatory sequential design, one of the mixed-method designs. The quantitative part of the study included 392 PES teacher candidates studying at four universities in Turkey. Quantitative data were collected using the Meaning in Life Questionnaire and the Smartphone Addiction Scale—Short Form. Results – The findings showed a low-level, negative, and significant relationship between the presence of meaning and smartphone addiction, whereas no significant relationship was found between the search for meaning and smartphone addiction. Additionally, a low-level, positive, and significant relationship was determined between the presence of meaning and the search for meaning. In the qualitative phase of the research, semi-structured interviews were conducted to support the quantitative findings. Participants’ views indicated that sports provide individuals with meaning in life and partially balance smartphone use. Conclusion – As a result, it was determined that the concept of the search for meaning is influenced by the sports context and the sample’s characteristics, and is not a direct risk factor for smartphone addiction; rather, the search for meaning may be an indicator of adaptation or personal development, not merely a lack of a meaningful life. In contrast, it was concluded that experiencing a high level of meaningful life among PES teacher candidates has a protective effect against the risk of smartphone addiction.

Affective States of Academics: The Dissolving Fantasy of the ‘Good Academy’

    Gülçiçek, Demet; Erdoğan, Emine

Drawing on the affective trajectories of academics in social science and humanities departments, this article asks how they imagine a ‘good academy’ and how they navigate the tension between that imagination and the demands of contemporary university regulations. Based on sixteen in-depth interviews with early-career researchers in Ankara, Turkey, it traces how academics narrate their affective relationship with the academy. Bringing together Berlant's conceptualisation of cruel optimism and Ngai's analysis of low-key affective states such as ugly feelings, the article shows that the attachment to the good academy is narrated as something that obstructs flourishing due to the institutional demands in higher education. This in-betweenness is analysed in relation to loosening attachment to the academy that is produced by a mood of irritation.

Technology Acceptance in Sustainable Distance Education

Akti Aslan, Seda; Çekmez, Erdem; Ayaz, Ahmet; Özyurt, Özcan; Aslan, Alper

This study aims to examine the thematic structure and temporal evolution of the literature on technology acceptance in distance education using the Structural Topic Modeling method. Peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Scopus database between 2016 and 2025 were included in the analysis, yielding 18 consistent thematic clusters. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) Core Constructs and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)/Partial Least Squares (PLS) Methodology emerged as the most prevalent themes, reflecting the field’s sustained reliance on quantitative model-testing approaches. Trend analyses revealed a pronounced decline in TAM Core Constructs, while Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Extensions, Hybrid and Emergency Remote Teaching, and Mobile and AI Applications demonstrated significant upward trends. The period comparison showed that pandemic-related themes became markedly prominent in the 2021–2025 period. Topic correlation analysis indicated the presence of competing temporal niches within the literature. Taken together, the findings suggest that research on technology acceptance in distance education is undergoing a structural transition from single-framework TAM dominance toward a multi-model, context-sensitive research paradigm. These findings carry important implications for the sustainable development of technology-enhanced distance education ecosystems and offer evidence-based guidance for researchers and policymakers committed to building inclusive and adaptive educational systems.

Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education: Conceptual Dimensions, Trends, and Research Directions

Akti Aslan, Seda; Ayaz, Ahmet; Ozyurt, Ozcan; Aslan, Alper

Research into generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the field of education has been growing rapidly in recent years. The rapid expansion of the literature has necessitated a systematic examination of the field. In this study, the thematic structure of GenAI research in the field of education during the 2023–2025 period was examined. Given the need to work with a large-scale dataset comprising 15,036 studies, a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)-based topic modelling analysis was selected. A search conducted on Scopus resulted in the inclusion of 15,036 studies in the analysis. The LDA analysis identified 12 prominent topics based on consistency scores. Descriptively, these prominent topics were grouped under four broad thematic areas. Among these axes, the technical axis holds the largest share (25%). It was observed that whilst technical topics were on the rise during the 2023–2025 period, topics such as ethics and chatbots showed a relative downward trend. The observed trends suggest that scholarly attention is increasingly directed towards technically oriented research. The findings also indicate a need for theoretical frameworks to ensure pedagogical depth. It is anticipated that the study’s findings will serve as an important reference point for future research. © The Author(s) 2026. Exploring Health Literacy, Anxiety, and Perception Among Nursing and Allied Health Students in Turkey: A Cross-Sectional Study

Yeşiltepe, Akgün; Daşbilek, Ferhat; Ayhan, Mehmet Osman

Background: Health literacy, anxiety, and perception directly affect healthcare students' readiness for professional roles. Assessing these factors is crucial to enhance both their well-being and patient care quality. This study examined health literacy, health anxiety, and health perception among Health Sciences students and their links to socio-demographic factors. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive design was used in accordance with the STROBE guidelines. The sample, consisting of 258 students from Munzur University Faculty of Health Sciences, was selected using stratified and simple random sampling methods. Data were collected using a Descriptive Information Form, the Health Literacy Scale, the Health Anxiety Inventory, and the Health Perception Scale. Descriptive statistics, Mann−Whitney U, Kruskal−Wallis tests with Bonferroni correction, and Spearman's correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS 26 and JASP 0.19. Results: Students demonstrated inadequate health literacy (17.75 ± 11.37) and moderate health perception (43.43 ± 6.25); the mean health anxiety score was 18.78 ± 6.14. A weak but statistically significant positive correlation was found between health literacy and health anxiety (r = 0.225, p < 0.05) and between health perception and health anxiety (r = 0.215, p < 0.05); however, no significant correlation was observed between health literacy and health perception (r = 0.090, p > 0.05). Health perception revealed statistically significant differences according to maternal education level, place of residence, and frequency of reading health-related research. Health literacy significantly differed by academic department, year of study, perceived health status, and perceived usefulness of online health information. Health anxiety varied significantly by the presence of chronic illness, chronic illness status, perceived health status, medication use, and alcohol/tobacco consumption. Conclusion: The findings highlight the complex interplay between cognitive (health literacy), emotional (health anxiety), and perceptual (health perception) dimensions of student health. Promoting digital health literacy and providing counselling services may help reduce health anxiety and enhance self-awareness among health sciences students.
