In this study, three hybrids of Origanum (Lamiaceae) were examined in detail using morphological, karyological, palynological and molecular approaches. One of the three hybrids, O. × aytacii, is here described for the first time, and is compared with its putative parents, O. sipyleum and O. vulgare subsp. hirtum. In addition to morphological, karyological and palynological features, we also examined nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS) sequences of O. × intermedium (O. onites × O. sipyleum), O. × intercedens (O. onites × O. vulgare subsp. hirtum) and their purported parental species that share the same area with the new hybrid. Pollen grains were hexacolpate and isopolar. The range of Polar/Equatorial ratio (P/E) of pollen for investigated taxa varied from 0.74 to 0.99. All investigated taxa are diploid with a chromosome number as 2n = 30. According to molecular results, O. × aytacii was the most polymorphic taxon. In addition, DNA sequences showed that O. × intercedens was more similar to O. vulgare subsp. hirtum than to O. onites, and O. × intermedium was more similar to O. onites than to O. sipyleum. Furthermore, O. onites and O. vulgare subsp. hirtum have many different ITS haplotypes, probably resulting from backcrossing with different individuals. Results obtained in this study demonstrate that hybridization has played a major role in the process of Origanum speciation.

Hybrid parliamentary optimization and big bang-big crunch algorithm for global optimization

    Kiziloluk, Soner; Özer, Ahmet Bedri

Researchers have developed different metaheuristic algorithms to solve various optimization problems. The efficiency of a metaheuristic algorithm depends on the balance between exploration and exploitation. This paper presents the hybrid parliamentary optimization and big bang-big crunch (HPO-BBBC) algorithm, which is a combination of the parliamentary optimization algorithm (POA) and the big bang-big crunch (BB-BC) optimization algorithm. The intragroup competition phase of the POA is a process that searches for potential points in the search space, thereby providing an exploration mechanism. By contrast, the BB-BC algorithm has an effective exploitation mechanism. In the proposed method, steps of the BB-BC algorithm are added to the intragroup competition phase of the POA in order to improve the exploitation capabilities of the POA. Thus, the proposed method achieves a good balance between exploration and exploitation. The performance of the HPO-BBBC algorithm was tested using well-known mathematical test functions and compared with that of the POA, the BB-BC algorithm, and some other metaheuristics, namely the genetic algorithm, multiverse optimizer, crow search algorithm, dragonfly algorithm, and moth-flame optimization algorithm. The HPO-BBBC algorithm was found to achieve better optimization performance and a higher convergence speed than the above-mentioned algorithms on most benchmark problems.

Phenotypic differentiation analysis: A case study in hybridizing Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis) and brown trout (Salmo trutta fario)

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kutluyer, Filiz; Başçinar, Nadir

The aim of this study was to determine and compare the phenotypic variation in Çoruh trout (Salmo coruhensis), Rize trout (Salmo rizeensis), brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) and their native hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. t. fario × S. coruhensis; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis). The numbers and diameters of red and black spots were determined on operculum, fins and above and below the lateral line. The results from this study indicate that there were differences in spotting pattern, colour pattern or fin pigmentation traits between S. rizeensis, S. t. fario, S. coruhensis and their hybrids. Consequently, native S. rizeensis, S. t. fario and S. coruhensis were affected by interaction and phenotypic plastic aspects of traits in S. rizeensis were dominant in their hybrids (S. rizeensis × S. t. fario; S. rizeensis × S. coruhensis).
