This study investigates three newly designed Ti-Zr-Hf-based high-entropy alloys such as TiZrHfGdSm (N1), TiZrHfEr (N2), and TiZrHfGdEuB (N3), with the aim of understanding how selected rare-earth and boron additions influence microstructural evolution and dual γ-ray/fast-neutron shielding performance. All alloys were synthesized by arc melting and evaluated through thermodynamic modelling, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with elemental mapping, and mixed-field attenuation measurements. The results show that each composition forms an HCP-type solid-solution matrix with composition-dependent lattice distortion and secondary phase formation. Among the studied systems, the Er-modified alloy N2 develops the most spatially uniform elemental distribution and demonstrates the most balanced combination of γ-ray attenuation, effective atomic number, buildup behaviour, and fast-neutron removal efficiency. N1 and N3, containing multiple rare-earth elements and, in the case of N3, boron-induced borides, exhibit distinct grain features and provide valuable insights into how multi-element additions shape photon and neutron interaction pathways. Comparative examination confirms that shielding performance in these HEAs is governed by the interplay of elemental cross sections, density, and microstructural uniformity. The findings highlight Ti-Zr-Hf-RE(B) alloys as promising platforms for multifunctional radiation-shielding materials and provide a compositional framework for future optimization in nuclear, medical, and aerospace applications.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Comparative and systematically analysis of the effects of single and high-entropy rare earth oxide additives on the some physical properties and radiation shielding properties of copper composites
Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Yılmaz, Demet; Tasgın, Yahya; Kök, Mediha; Güler, Seval Hale
In this study, the effects of rare earth oxides (Gd₂O₃, La₂O₃, Eu₂O₃, Pr₂O₃, Dy₂O₃, and Y₂O₃) and high-entropy oxide (GdLaEuPrDyY)₂O₃ additives on the structural, mechanical, and radiation shielding properties of copper matrix composites were investigated. XRD and SEM-EDS analyses showed that the high-entropy oxide successfully formed in a single-phase bixbyite structure after mechanical alloying and was homogeneously distributed within the copper matrix. The rare earth oxide additive significantly reduced the crystal grain size of the Cu matrix and improved its mechanical properties. Specifically, the microhardness value reached 68.3 Hv in the composite with 20% high-entropy oxide additive, representing an increase of approximately 111% compared to pure copper (32.3 Hv). Gamma shielding results showed that the rare earth oxide additive significantly increased the photon attenuation capacity. Specifically, at 242 keV energy, the Dy₂O₃ additive increased the MAC value from 0.141 cm²/g to 0.246 cm²/g, providing a 74.5% improvement. The most important result is that the composite with 20% high-entropy oxide additive showed the highest shielding performance, achieving a MAC value of 0.278 cm²/g, which is significantly superior to pure copper. Furthermore, this composite exhibited the lowest HVL and MFP values, demonstrating the highest photon shielding efficiency. Neutron shielding analyses revealed that Gd₂O₃ and high-entropy oxide additives, in particular, increased thermal neutron attenuation performance to approximately 100%. These results demonstrate that high-entropy oxide additives provide a stronger impact compared to single oxide additives, offering superior performance in both gamma and neutron shielding. Consequently, copper composites doped with (GdLaEuPrDyY)₂O₃ stand out as promising alternative shielding materials for nuclear facilities, radiation protection systems, and advanced engineering applications due to their high shielding efficiency, improved mechanical properties, and non-toxic composition.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ1The effect of high entropy oxide on radiation shielding parameters of erbium oxide doped glasses

High-entropy materials are one of the most studied topics in recent years due to the extraordinary properties they exhibit. High entropy oxide (HEO) is a group of materials that have been studied for different applications. However, the effects of HEOs on the radiation properties of glasses are not well known. In this study, the structural, radiation and neutron shielding properties of SiO2 glass systems doped erbium oxide reinforced with refractory high entropy oxide (RHEO) with the formula TiMoNbTaWZrO11 were investigated. RHEAs used in the study were produced and characterized in our laboratory. Then, they were added to the glass samples at different rates together with Erbium oxide. As a result of SEM-EDS and XRD analyses, it was determined that the additives were distributed very homogeneously on the glass. The composition of glass systems is [95SiO2+(5-x)Er2O3+x TiMoNbTaWZrO11], where (x = 0, 0.5, 1 and 2 %, mol). The linear and mass attenuation coefficients (LAC and MAC), mean free path (MFP), half-value layer (HVL) and effective atomic numbers (Zeff) and effective electron density (Nel) of the glass structures were experimentally measured at the energy region of 53.16–661.62 keV. Also, the equivalent dose rates due to fast neutrons absorption were measured by using an 241Am–Be fast neutron source. Exposure buildup factor (EBF) and fast neutron removal cross section (ΣR) were theoretically determined. The proton and alpha shielding parameters of glasses were calculated. It is observed that glasses containing higher amounts of refractory high entropy oxide, within the SiO2–Er2O3 composition, demonstrated enhanced capabilities for shielding against radiation and neutrons.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ1Assesment of the gamma and neutron shielding capabilities of the boro-tellurite glass quaternary containing heavy metal oxide using Geant4 and Phy-X/PSD database
Aşkın, A.
This survey was conducted to reveal the gamma and neutron stopping performance of the 30PbO–10ZnO—(60-x)TeO2—xB2O3 (x = 0, 10, 20, 30, 50% mole) glass quaternary. Gamma and neutron attenuation parameters including the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), transmission fraction (TF), half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number (Zeff), exposure buildup factor (EBF) and fast neutron removal cross-section (∑R) were determined computationally using the Geant4 and Phy-X/PSD database tools and for photon energies ranging between 0.284 MeV and 2.510 MeV. It was found that increasing the B2O3 content from 0% to 50% mole and correspondingly decreasing the TeO2 content from 60% to 10% mole results in a degradation of μ by 18.2% and of Zeff by 28.6% at 0.284 MeV. Due to this decrease in μ and Zeff, the values of TF and HVL increased by 37.3% and 22.4% respectively. In the present study it was also observed that the density (ρ) of glass quaternary decreased with the decreasing content of TeO2, and that the density of glass has a remarkable effect on the photon attenuation characteristics. The Degradation of μ, Zeff, ρ and the increase of TF and HVL proves that the photon attenuation ability of the glasses investigated worsens with decreasing content of TeO2, as Tellurium's atomic number and atomic mass are high compared to those of boron. While the decrease of TeO2 weakens the photon attenuation performance, it was found that fast neutron attenuation increases as ∑R increases from 0.108 to 0.116 for the glass specimens containing 60% and 10% mole of TeO2 respectively.
