İlhan, Hasan; Güler, Ömer; Şi̇mşek, Tuncay; Alkan, Salih
In this study, boric acid-zinc (BA-Zn) nanoalloys were employed as an adsorbent for the removal of RB-5 dyestuff from aqueous solutions. The investigation focused on analyzing the impact of the initial dyestuff concentration, solution pH, temperature, and equilibrium contact time on the adsorption process of RB-5. The adsorption behavior of RB-5 onto the surface of BA-Zn-nanoalloys was explored, with a particular emphasis on the influence of initial dyestuff concentration and solution pH. The adsorption equilibrium data were subjected to analysis using Langmuir, Freundlich, DRK, and Temkin isotherm models. The results revealed a consistent alignment of RB-5 adsorption with both Langmuir and Temkin isotherms. Notably, the Langmuir adsorption capacity of BA-Zn-nanoparticles for RB-5 adsorption was determined to be 11.77mg / g at a temperature of 25°C. In the Temkin isotherm model, an adsorption constant (AT) of 1.003 was obtained. The calculated adsorption energy from the DR adsorption model was 1.09kJ / mol, implying a physical interaction-driven adsorption process. The empirical data further exhibited conformity with the pseudo-second order kinetic model, reflecting the rate-limiting step and overall kinetics of the adsorption process. Complementary to this, thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy (ΔH0), Gibbs free energy (ΔG0), and entropy (ΔS0) were evaluated to discern the energetics of BA-Zn-nanoparticle RB-5 adsorption. This study not only underscores the effectiveness of BA-Zn nanoalloys as a potential adsorbent for RB-5 dyestuff removal but also contributes to the understanding of the underlying adsorption mechanisms and energetics. The insights gained hold implications for the development of sustainable and efficient strategies for wastewater treatment and environmental protection.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ2Determination of trace element and fatty acid levels in tissues of mirror and scaly carp (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) living in Keban Dam Reservoir (Elazig)

This study investigated the concentrations of some accumulated trace metals (iron, manganese, zinc and copper) and fatty acids in liver and muscle tissues of mirror and scaly carp varieties (Cyprinus carpio L., 1758) living in Keban Dam Reservoir (Elazig), which is the second-largest artificial lake in Turkey that hosts commercially valuable and preferred fish varieties for human consumption. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method was used to analyse the concentrations of trace elements. Fatty acid levels were measured in a gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) device, using a flame ionization detector (FID). Considering the two fish varieties and tissues that were studied, the mean metal concentrations (μg g−1) were found in the following ranges: Fe 12.32–49.97, Mn 0.12–0.62, Zn 10.45–86.59 and Cu 2.74–11.86. Although the lowest levels were detected in the muscle tissue for all the metals examined, the levels in the liver tissue were significantly higher. According to the results of the analyses on fatty acid concentrations, the mean total saturated fatty acid levels in the muscle tissue of the scaly carp and mirror carp varieties were found to be 31.07 and 31.43 (%), respectively, whereas these values for the liver tissue were consecutively 22.36 and 22.08 (%). Successively, the mean total levels of unsaturated fatty acids were determined as 68.93 and 68.40 (%) in the muscle tissue and 77.64 and 77.92 in the liver tissue. This study, with the finding that the trace (metallic) element accumulation rates were below the upper limits of the tolerable range, and the examined fish varieties were rich in fatty acids, shows that mirror carp and scaly carp living in Keban Dam Reservoir are highly nutritious for human diets.

The leaching behavior of Tunceli smithsonite ore in nitric acid was evaluated in two study steps including optimization of leaching process and kinetics modeling. The individual and synergistic effects of effective parameters such as nitric acid concentration, solid-to-liquid ratio, stirring speed, and temperature on the dissolution rate of zinc were investigated using central composite design. Four factors including temperature (30–50 °C), nitric acid concentration (0.2–0.5 mol/L), stirring speed (350–600 rpm), and solid-to-liquid ratio (0.004–0.01 g/L) were investigated. The dissolution percent of zinc (97%) was obtained in 120 min of leaching time: acid concentration 0.5 mol/L, temperature 50 °C, stirring speed 500 rpm, and solid–liquid ratio 2/500 g/mL at the optimum conditions obtained using the central composite design. The dissolution kinetics of smithsonite was examined according to heterogenous models and it was found that the dissolution rate was controlled by ash layer diffusion process. It was found that the leaching rate increased with increasing temperature, stirring speed, and acid concentration as well as decrescent particle size and solid/liquid ratio. The trial data were analyzed by statistical and graphical methods and the activation energy of this leaching process was determined to be 28.63 kJ·mol−1.
