The effect of a professional development program on e-learning readiness and digital fluency: a study with higher education academics

    Demiralp, Demet; Gunduzalp, Seda

Purpose This study aims to determine the effectiveness of a targeted professional development program in enhancing two critical competencies for higher education academics in the digital age: e-learning readiness and digital fluency.Design/methodology/approach This study used a pretest-posttest control group model within a quasi-experimental framework with 46 academics. Data were collected using validated scales for e-learning readiness and digital fluency.Findings Findings demonstrated that the experimental group experienced considerable gains in both e-learning readiness and digital fluency scores. In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the control group, providing strong evidence of the program's effectiveness.Originality/value Unlike most descriptive studies in the field, this study provides quasi-experimental evidence of program effectiveness regarding professional development interventions. It offers an empirically validated model from a T & uuml;rkiye higher education context, providing valuable insights for university administrators and policymakers internationally who are facing similar challenges.

Affective States of Academics: The Dissolving Fantasy of the ‘Good Academy’

    Gülçiçek, Demet; Erdoğan, Emine

Drawing on the affective trajectories of academics in social science and humanities departments, this article asks how they imagine a ‘good academy’ and how they navigate the tension between that imagination and the demands of contemporary university regulations. Based on sixteen in-depth interviews with early-career researchers in Ankara, Turkey, it traces how academics narrate their affective relationship with the academy. Bringing together Berlant's conceptualisation of cruel optimism and Ngai's analysis of low-key affective states such as ugly feelings, the article shows that the attachment to the good academy is narrated as something that obstructs flourishing due to the institutional demands in higher education. This in-betweenness is analysed in relation to loosening attachment to the academy that is produced by a mood of irritation.

Job satisfaction mediation in the relationship between work-family conflict and life satisfaction among Turkish academics

Öztürk, Meral; Türk, Ahmet; Tire, Olcay; Gönültaş, Burak M.

This study examined the mediating role of job satisfaction in explaining the relationship between work-family conflict and life satisfaction among Turkish academicians. Employing a cross-sectional study design 645 academicians aged between 24 and 65 (male = 45.1%, female = 54.9%; professors = 12.1%, associate professors = 17.7%, assistant professors = 28.2%, lecturers = 17.8%, research assistants = 24.2%; mean age and SD = 39.72 ± 8.94) completed the Job Satisfaction Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, and the Work-Family Conflict Scale. They also self-reported their demographics. The findings from PROCESS MACRO analysis indicated work-family conflict to predict lower job satisfaction among academicians. Those with higher job satisfaction were also self-reported with higher life satisfaction. Lob satisfaction mediated the relationship between the academician’s work family conflict and life satisfaction for higher life satisfaction. The findings of this study indicate a need to implement work-family and life satisfaction measures to enhance job satisfaction among academics.
