This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing bio-oils derived from agricultural waste materials (such as straw, olive pomace, and pine cones) as rejuvenating additives in reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) containing bituminous mixtures, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach in asphalt technology. The primary objective of the study is to enhance the physical and mechanical properties of aged binders using ecofriendly alternatives, thereby developing high-performance asphalt mixtures without harming the environment. The bio-oils, produced through pyrolysis, were evaluated in comparison with two commercial rejuvenators. Key performance criteria, including Marshall stability, moisture damage resistance (TSR), indirect tensile stiffness modulus (ITSM), and fatigue life, were tested. The results indicate that natural rejuvenators not only soften the aged binder but also effectively balance the flexibility, strength, and deformation resistance of the mixture. Notably, straw oil exhibited superior performance in terms of both high stability and extended fatigue life, while olive pomace oil demonstrated remarkable success in moisture resistance. Although commercial additives were effective to a certain extent, they failed to achieve the same level of structural compatibility and sustainability provided by natural bio-oils. In this regard, the study provides strong evidence that agricultural biomass waste can serve as a value-added solution in asphalt pavements, in alignment with the principles of the circular economy. In conclusion revealed that mixtures containing 75% RAP rejuvenated with straw oil achieved 11% higher Marshall stability and up to 14.5 times longer fatigue life compared to virgin mixtures, while olive pomace oil-based mixtures reached a TSR value of 81.5%, demonstrating superior moisture resistance.

This study integrates experimental and computational methods to evaluate the rejuvenation performance of an aged asphalt binder using two novel bio-based additives, 1T and 2T. The aged binder, sourced from reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP), was modified with 25 wt% of each rejuvenator (denoted as 1T25 and 2T25, respectively). SARA (Saturates, Aromatics, Resins, Asphaltenes) fractionation and colloidal indices were used to assess compositional recovery. Both additives increased aromatic and resin contents while reducing asphaltenes. The 2T-modified binder achieved the highest colloidal stability (Ic = 0.29) and the most pronounced improvement in stability indicators (CI and Ic) among the tested systems. Complementary molecular dynamics (MD) simulations using the COMPASSII force field modeled the structural and thermodynamic behavior of RAP and rejuvenated systems. The 2T25 system exhibited higher density and more compact molecular packing, suggesting stronger cohesive organization and reduced free volume, whereas 1T25 showed greater molecular spacing and flexibility. RDF analysis and converged thermodynamic/structural trajectories (energy, temperature, cell length, and density stabilization) further supported rejuvenator-dependent rearrangement of packing during equilibration. Overall, MD acts as a mechanistic bridge that interprets experimental SARA/CI/Ic trends and supports design-oriented development of sustainable rejuvenators.

This study explores the valorization of agricultural biomass wastes into high-value bio-based materials by evaluating the performance of pyrolysis-derived bio-oils obtained from straw, pine cone, and olive pomace for the rejuvenation of aged asphalt binders. The effectiveness of these biomass-derived bio-oils was comparatively assessed against two commercial rejuvenators to enhance binder reusability using renewable resources. The optimum rejuvenator dosages were determined through penetration, viscosity, and dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) tests, while the associated physical and chemical modifications were investigated using FTIR, SEM-EDS, and elemental analyses. Penetration and viscosity results indicated that all rejuvenators significantly reduced binder stiffness and improved fluidity. DSR analysis indicated that increasing rejuvenator content reduced G∗/sin δ values, reflecting a decrease in binder stiffness and a softening effect of the rejuvenators, which contributes to restoring the viscoelastic balance of the aged binder. FTIR results demonstrated that biomass-derived bio-oils, particularly those from pine cone and straw, effectively reduced carbonyl (C=O) and sulfoxide (S=O) functional groups, indicating strong chemical rejuvenation. SEM-EDS analyses showed that the heterogeneous and porous morphology of bio-oils promoted improved interaction with the asphalt binder. Based on the combined results of the three experimental approaches, the optimum rejuvenator dosages were identified as 25% for commercial products, 35% for pine cone and olive pomace bio-oils, and 45% for straw bio-oil. Overall, the findings highlight that biomass-derived bio-oils produced via pyrolysis offer a sustainable and performance-effective pathway for converting agricultural residues into value-added materials, supporting circular bioenergy and biomass utilization strategies.

This study evaluates the effects of using bio-oil obtained from waste biomass on the physical properties, rheology, fatigue, and rutting of recycled asphalt binder. In addition, the aim of this study is to provide benefits to the environment and the economy by reusing waste materials. The bio-oils produced were produced by the pyrolysis method. B70/100 pure bitumen was chosen as the reference binder for the rejuvenation of the selected RAP binder. To ensure its properties, five different rejuvenators (two commercial + three bio-based rejuvenators) were added to the aged bitumen obtained from recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) at different rates. The produced bio-oils were compared with commercial products. The first goal of the study is to produce rejuvenators from waste materials, and the second is to achieve similar or better results with commercial rejuvenators by producing rejuvenators from waste materials. When the test results are examined, it can be seen that the aged binder was rejuvenated to the desired hardness by adding rejuvenator to it. It is seen that the penetration value of the aged binder increased by the addition of rejuvenator, whereas the softening point and viscosity values decreased.

This study develops a deep learning-based automated system for detecting and segmenting earthquake-induced asphalt cracks, offering a rapid and reliable solution for post-disaster road condition assessments. Unlike traditional manual inspections, which are time-consuming and error-prone, our approach leverages advanced segmentation techniques to ensure accurate, pixel-level classification of various crack types. The main challenge of this study was determining the damage caused to highways by earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 7.0, which occur approximately once every 200 years. The most crucial step in the automatic detection of these damages is the reliable preparation of a high-accuracy dataset. To achieve this, pixel-based labels were created by experts in the construction field by analyzing each pixel value. Following two major earthquakes, a unique dataset for segmenting roadway deterioration was created through intensive and detailed studies. This study aims to present the performance results of popular deep learning-based segmentation models in an unbiased manner, providing a feasible infrastructure for future real-time applications. The innovative aspect of this research lies in the creation of a unique post-earthquake dataset, collected and labeled from highways affected by the February 6, 2023 earthquakes in Turkey (Mw = 7.7 and Mw = 7.6). Deep learning models, including SegNet, Attention SegNet, U-Net, FCN (8s), and DeepLab, were trained and tested on this dataset. Among these, the SegNet model achieved the best performance with an average accuracy of 86.72%, precision of 92.99%, and sensitivity of 78.45%. By demonstrating superior performance metrics compared to existing methods, this study provides a robust framework for future infrastructure monitoring and maintenance strategies, ensuring safer and more resilient transportation networks in disaster-prone regions.

In this study, the storage stability of modified bitumen prepared with bitumen additives styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and American Gilsonite (AG) was evaluated. For this purpose, modified bitumen was prepared by using different ratios of each additive type. The prepared modified bitumens were subjected to storage stability test according to EN 13399 standard. Penetration, softening point and rotational viscometry tests were performed on the samples subjected to storage stability test. As a result of the penetration and softening point tests of the samples prepared with SBS after storage stability, it was determined that the penetration and softening point values of the samples obtained from the upper part of the tube were higher. This is thought to be due to the accumulation of SBS, which has a lower specific gravity than bitumen, in the upper part of the tube during the storage stability test. Considering the viscosity test results, it was determined that the viscosity values of the modified bitumen samples obtained from the upper part of the tubes were higher than the samples obtained from the lower part of the tubes.

By increasing the asphalt mixtures' inherent capacity for self-healing, encapsulated rejuvenators can extend the service lives of asphalt pavements. The capsules are shattered when crack damage occurs, allowing the rejuvenator ingredient to seep into the cracks. In this work, a brand-new kind of capsule was created. Sunflower oil was a rejuvenator in these capsules. We looked at how well asphalt mixture samples with and without capsules self-healed under static loading. The capacity for self-healing of asphalt mixtures incorporating a novel class of capsules that contain sunflower oil as a rejuvenating agent. For this reason, the ability of the rejuvenating ingredient to diffuse inside of samples of virgin bitumen and the healing potential of combinations of cracked asphalt containing capsules have both been assessed. Due to the mechanical properties of the polymeric capsules examined. Then, using a unique mechanical test, the impact of capsule content on the crack-healing characteristics of asphalt mixtures was assessed at various healing durations (from 5 to 216h) and loads (from 0 to 85kN). As the applied load increases, the healing levels of the asphalt samples with capsules rise; later, the healing levels of the asphalt samples with capsule remain constant. According to the findings, the maximal healing level was typically attained after 96 hours and remained constant until 216 hours.

The crumb rubber (CR) obtained from waste vehicle tires is gaining attention from the researchers because of its contribution to performance besides having low cost and environmental-friendly characteristic. In this study the effects of using styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) together with CR on rutting and aging properties of binders were evaluated by dynamic shear rheometer, softening point and viscosity tests. B 160/220 (PG 58) pure bitumen was modified in 13 different combinations with different contents of additives. The combined use of SIS and CR was compared with the high rate of SIS and CR modifications individually. It was determined that the combined use of 2% SIS and 7% CR by weight of bitumen provides an economical and superior performance that cannot be achieved with individual SIS or CR modifications. The binary binders were able to preserve their elastic properties after aging better than the individual SIS and CR modifications.

Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer is one of the most preferred additives to improve performance in hot mix asphalt pavements. The storage instability, in other words, the separation of a polymer-rich phase from the bitumen-rich phase in the course of storage and transportation is one of the prevalent problems in SBS modified bitumen. The present study attempted to obtain modified bitumen at the same performance level with the SBS modified bitumen, but stable with respect to the storage stability. For this purpose, both SBS and American Gilsonite (AG) were used in modified bitumen production. It was determined that modified bitumen at the same performance level was obtained with the use of 5 % SBS or 18 % AG in bitumen modification. It was also determined that the performance levels of the modified bitumen obtained with the use of 2 % SBS + 13 % AG, 3 % SBS + 10 % AG and 4 % SBS + 6 % AG were similar. Additionally, 2 %, 3 % and 4 % SBS modified bitumen were used for the assessment of storage stability properties of the SBS modified binders. These 8 different modified bitumen samples were tested for storage stability based on the EN 13399 standard. Penetration, softening point, rotational viscometer, bending beam rheometer, and dynamic shear rheometer tests were conducted on the samples. Based on all conducted tests, it was determined that more stable binders were obtained with the use of AG and SBS in terms of storage stability compared to solely SBS modified bitumen.
