The goal of present study is to find the penolic contents, antioxidant activities and antimicrobial capacities in the seeds of five Salvia L. taxa two of which are endemics (Salvia euphratica var. leiocalycina and Salvia euphratica var. euphratica). The flavonoid and phenolic acid are determined by using HPLC while the antioxidant activities are determined based on different methods. Also, the antimicrobial activities of some Salvia species are determined by using the well agar method. The current study found that the studied Salvia species have low flavonoid. It has been found that Salvia euphratica var. euphratica has high vanillic acid, ferulic acid and rosmarinic acid among the studied taxa. Similarly, it has been found that Salvia euphratica var. euphratica has high DPPH and ABTS radical scavening capacity in all concentrations. It has been also found that Salvia euphratica var. euphratica has highest total phenolic content (372,63±0,87 µgGAE/mg) whilst Salvia tricholoda has low total phenolic content (46,41±1,71 µgGAE/mg). In addition, this study demonstrated that Salvia tricholoda has lowest metal chelating activity (37,35±0,51%). Furthermore, present study found that the lipid peroxidation levels of the studied Salvia taxa are between 18,21±0,37 mg/kg and 21,03±0,22 mg/kg while it has been found that the antibacterial properties of the Salvia taxa under study are altering.

Pekdemir, Mustafa Ersin; Aydin, Derya; Selçuk Pekdemir, Sibel; Erecevit Sönmez, Pınar; Aksoy, Edanur

This work aimed to investigate the effect of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (MNP), which are known to have a wide range of applications in recent years, on nanocomposite films prepared with shape memory polymers. Herein, PLA–PEG blend nanocomposite films were prepared by solution casting method using MNP at different ratios. PLA–PEG Blend/MNP nanocomposite films were characterized with Attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR) to determine the –C=O stretching of PLA and Fe–O stretching signals of Fe3O4. The thermal stability, morphology, and magnetic behavior were studied by comparing the results among PLA–PEG blend, PLA–PEG blend/MNP nanocomposite with thermogravimetric analyses (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), respectively. The effect of MNP on the shape memory properties of PLA/PEG blend was investigated. Moreover, the comparison of antimicrobial activity between PLA/PEG blend and PLA–PEG blend/MNP nanocomposite films were conducted by the disk diffusion method. The results showed that MNP increased the thermal stability of the PLA/PEG blend and the nanocomposites inhibited the growth of C.albicans microorganism. Synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of antimicrobial performance of N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide based copolymer on pathogens

Pıhtılı, Güzin; Erecevit Sönmez, Pınar; Biryan, Fatih; Torğut, Gülben

In this study, poly{N-[3-(dimethylamino) propylmethacrylamide-co-acrylonitrile}; [P(DMAPMA-co-AcN)] copolymer was polymerized by free radical polymerization (FRP) in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) initiator at 60°C. The structure of the synthesized polymer was characterized by the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) methods. The bactericidal and fungicidal effects of the solutions prepared by adding methanol to this copolymer to prevent the growth of pathogenic bacteria, yeast, and fungi were evaluated by disk diffusion and broth microdilution method. Since the resistance of bacteria, yeast and fungi, which adversely affect human health, to antibiotics is an important issue, and there has not been any study on the antimicrobial properties of this copolymer, it has directed us to investigate its antimicrobial properties. According to antimicrobial susceptibility tests: The polymer solution showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial action with 12.3–14.3 mm/inhibition zone diameter on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klepsiella pneumoniae, Enterococcus faecalis bacteria, Candida tropicalis, Epidermophyton floccosum yeast and fungi and showed a narrow spectrum of effect on inhibition of the growth of Candida albicans with 10.3 mm/inhibition zone diameter. No antimicrobial effects were observed on Staphylococcus aureus. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) value on the test microorganisms was determined as 125–31.25 μl. The data obtained prove that the polymer is in the same group as the interaction of bactericidal and fungicidal drugs. It is also important as a polymer with antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to produce a new polymer with antimicrobial properties. This polymer can be a new and yielding antimicrobial representative in different areas.

Torgut, Gulben; Kirbag, Sevda; Sönmez, Pınar Erecevıt; Pıhtılı, Güzin

Antimicrobial susceptibility test for poly (AN-co-VP) copolymer, which we think could be an ideal drug in treatment interventions was evaluated with disk diffusion method and minimum inhibitor concentration. In the antimicrobial measurement data, it was determined that the poly (AN-co-VP) copolymer dissolved in pure water is a significant inhibitory property against the growth of yeast (on Candida spp. with 11.33±0.3 mm barrier area) and dermatophyte fungi (on Epidermophyton sp. and Trichophyton sp.with 12.33±0.3 mm barrier area) (p<0.001) and no inhibitory properties were observed in preventing the growth of all bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus megaterium). MIC limit values that prevent the growth of dermatophytes and yeasts supporting the disc diffusion method are 50-100 μL. This study is an alternative approach in order to limit the spread of superficial fungal infections they cause and eliminate these infections that tend to become chronic since this polymer extract has no inhibitory properties on bacteria but prevents the growth of yeast and dermatophytes.
