Farm-Raised Versus Wild Caught Fish: Which is Better?

Can, Erkan; Özçiçek, Esin; Erol, Nida Demirtaş; Austin, Brian

There has been much discussion about which is better, farmed (= aquaculture) or wild-caught fish (= capture-fisheries), with supporters and opponents of both approaches. On balance, aquaculture should be the better option because of the ability to control all aspects of production. The result is that farmed products are often cheaper than wild-caught equivalents. However, there are negative aspects to aquaculture, including habitat destruction, for example the removal of mangroves for the construction of shrimp farms, the effect of escapees on native fish populations, and the possible negative impact of pollution from organic material, pathogens and antimicrobial compounds. The use of wild-caught “trash” fish as a source of protein and oil for the diets of carnivorous fish species in aquaculture is unsustainable. In contrast with wild-caught fish, there is greater variability in supply because of overfishing, quotas imposed by governments, and the effects of adverse weather. Moreover, fishing in distant waters is expensive and hazardous. Certainly, the quality of the product is more difficult to control because the history of the catch is largely unknown. However, there are concerns about illegal fishing activities, and the capture of undersized specimens which impacts negatively on future stocking levels. For the forseeable future, there will be roles for both aquaculture and capture-fisheries to meet the increasing global demand for aquatic food.

Lipid content and wastewater treatment potential of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus isolated from Uzuncaylr Dam Lake

Can, Şafak Seyhaneyildiz; Can, Erkan; Yilmaz, Kadir

Production of microalgae for biodiesel, one of the alternative renewable energy sources, is costly due to nutrient media. Industrial and domestic wastewater contains nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients that are the primary food source for algae. Releasing this environmentally harmful effluent into receiving bodies of water, such as the sea or a freshwater reservoir, without prior treatment causes serious problems. Combining microalgae cultivation with wastewater treatment is a promising strategy for improving wastewater and reducing the cost of nutrient media required for algae production. In this study, wastewater obtained from a wastewater treatment facility was diluted with clean water to 0.25%, 50%, and 75% concentrations, and Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus were cultured in these nutrient media for 20 days. As a result, microalgae increased their biomass and lipid content, while consuming nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and ammonium from the wastewater as nutrients.

Spermatozoa Cryopreservation of Sex-Reversed Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): The Effect of Dilution Rate and Supplementation of a N-(2-Mercaptopropionyl)-Glycine -Based Extender on Sperm Motility and Fertilizing Capacity

Kutluyer Kocabaş, Filiz; Can, Erkan; Dogan, Mustafa

For commercial aquaculture, the obtainment of all-female salmonid populations is important in fish farms. After freezing process, variable spermatozoa maturity, higher sperm concentration, low sperm quality, and reduced fertilization success have been observed in sex-reversed female rainbow trout. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to assess effect of dilution rate and supplementation of a N-(2-Mercaptopropionyl)-Glycine (MPG)-based extender on sperm motility and fertilizing capacity of sex-reversed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The supplementation of MPG [0 (control, 0), 1 mM; 2 mM; 4 mM] to extenders and dilution ratio (1:9, 1:15 and 1:25) were tested in sex-reversed female rainbow trout spermatozoa during cryopreservation. For thawing, the straws (0.5 ml) were placed in a water bath at 37°C for 30 s. Our results showed that the best concentration of MPG was 2 mM for post-thaw motility duration (120.67±9.07%), fertilization (62.67±3.10%) and hatching rate (54.33±3.10%) at 1:15 dilution rate. Overall, MPG provided improvements during cryopreservation process and could be used as protective agent.

Gökkuşağı Alabalığı (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Juvenillerinin Anestezisinde Karanfil (Eugenia caryophyllus), Okaliptüs (Eucalyptus citriodora) ve Melisa (Melisa officinalis) Esansiyel Yağlarının Etkin Konsantrasyonlarının Belirlenmesi

    Can, Erkan; Coşansel, Çiğdem

Aksu, Önder; Türkoǧlu, Semra; Can, Erkan; Erişir, Mine; Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kayim, Murathan; Benzer, Fulya

This study was designed to investigate the effects of dietary kefir on trypsin, heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) as well as the oxidant and antioxidant status of the freshwater crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus. The experiment was performed with the four following treatments: Control group, D1, D2 and D3 (kefir supplemented diet 2, 4, 8 g/kg of crayfish body mass, respectively). Crayfish were stocked into 12 fibreglass tanks (three replicates per treatment) and fed for 45 days. Reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (CAT) in hepatopancreas and muscle were analysed to determine the status of the oxidant/antioxidant balance. In addition, HSP70 and trypsin were measured in haemolymph. Our results indicated that the activity of GSH-Px, MDA and GSH levels decreased in hepatopancreas ( p > 0.05) and muscle tissues ( p < 0.05) with increasing kefir concentration, while CAT activity increased ( p < 0.05). Trypsin and HSP70 insignificantly decreased in haemolymph.

Comparison of nutrient contents of wild and farmed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum 1792) from Keban Dam Lake in Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey

Özçiçek, Esin; Can, Erkan; Yılmaz, Ökkeş

In this study, fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K vitamins) and cholesterol contents of wild-caught and farm-raised rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were compared. The amounts of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3, DHA) in wild and farmed forms were 21.56%–18.14%, 18.79%–16.21% and 14.34%–11.49% in April, May and June, respectively. Vitamin E, which is one of the fat-soluble and antioxidant vitamins, showed highest level among the vitamins. Vitamin E levels in both wild and farmed fish were 5.11–4.26, 4.83–2.89 and 0.99–1.95 mg/100 g in April, May and June, respectively. The substantial difference between wild and farmed rainbow trout was found in May (p < 0.05). In conclusion, both wild and farmed rainbow trout from Keban Dam Lake (Pertek Region) can be considered as good sources of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). However, it was observed that the n-3 PUFA level in wild form was higher than the culture fish within the investigated monthly periods. On the other hand, farmed fish demonstrated higher levels of n-6 PUFA over the wild individuals.

Potential anesthetic properties of bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) essential oil compared with 2-phenoxyethanol on blue dolphin cichlid, cyrtocara moorii

Kizak, Volkan; Can, Erkan; Seyhaneyildiz Can, Şafak

The efficacy of Bay leaf (Laurus nobilis) essential oil (LnEO) as a herbal anesthetic agent was evaluated with 2-Phenoxyethanol (2-PE) in Blue Dolphin Cichlid, Cyrtocara moorii. Fish were exposed to different anesthetic concentrations and the lowest effective concentrations (LECs) were determined according to deep anesthesia (AD<3 min) and full recovery (RF<5 min) times. LnEO showed anesthetic properties, and all applied concentrations of both agents induced AD in C. moorii. The LECs of LnEO and 2-PE for C. moorii were determined as 800 µl L-1 (AD; RF → 183 ± 6.3 s; 191 ± 2.6 s) and 600 µl L-1 (AD; RF → 171 ± 3.2 s; 239 ± 4.9 s), respectively. Significant differences were found between anesthetic agents in terms of deep anesthesia and full recovery times for the same concentrations (p<0.05). Induction and recovery times decreased with increasing in LnEO concentrations. On the other hand, anesthesia times were decreased with increasing of 2-PE concentrations, while recovery times increased. Induction and recovery times for LnEO were significantly dependent on concentrations and positive relationships were recorded between AD and RF, whereas the relationship was negative in 2-PE. Bay leaf essential oil has not been used as an anesthetic agent in fish until now. Our results showed that LnEO was an effective anesthetic agent with some minor side effects on C. moorii.

The anesthetic effects of 2-phenoxyethanol on Munzur trout fingerlings (Salmo munzuricus Turan et al., 2017) at different temperatures

    Akgul, E.; Can, E.

In this study, the anesthetic effects of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE, with %99 purity, BASF, Germany) on Munzur trout (Salmo munzuricus., a native species) originated from Munzur stream have been studied. 300 fish with the average weight of 4.42±0.62 g and length of 8.10±0.60 cm were used. To determine the anesthetic effects of various concentrations of 2-PE on Munzur trout fingerlings, the experiments were performed in two different temperatures (13 ºC and 18ºC) and five different concentrations (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 ml L-1). 2-PE was used in this study as an anesthetic agent. In the anesthetic processing we practiced in all concentrations, except for 0.1 ml L-1 of 2-PE, loss of reflex (S5) was determined between 68 sec and 276 sec, and total behavioral recovery (R3) was determined between 58 sec and 208 sec. Induction times of anesthesia varied with anesthetic concentrations, decreasing with the increases of 2-PE concentrations. On the other hand, recovery times increased with decreasing of anesthetic concentrations. The lowest effective dose was determined as 0.3 ml L-1 at the temperatures 13 ºC and 18ºC. In this study, first time optimum anesthetic doses of 2-PE were determined for fingerling specimens of Salmo munzuricus which is endemic to Munzur stream and has an importance for aquaculture.

Anesthetic Efficiency of Three Medicinal Plant Oils for Aquatic Species: Coriander Coriandrum sativum, Linaloe Tree Bursera delpechiana, and Lavender Lavandula hybrida

Can, Erkan; Kızak, Volkan; Can, Şafak Seyhaneyıldız; Özçiçek, Esin

This study evaluated the potential of three essential oils (EOs) that were obtained from coriander Coriandrum sativum (CEO), linaloe tree Bursera delpechiana (BEO), and lavender Lavandula hybrida (LEO) as anesthetic agents. Convict Cichlids Amatitlania nigrofasciata (Günther 1867) were exposed to eight concentrations of anesthetic (50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 200, 250, and 300 μL/L). After exposure to the anesthetic, the fish were transferred to clean water to recover. All of the EOs produced an anesthetic effect after exposure to the compounds for 30 min at the minimal effective concentration (MEC), which was identified according to deep anesthesia (A5 < 3 min) and full recovery (R3 < 5 min) times. At 50 and 75 μL/L, the total loss of equilibrium was not observed for all tested EOs. The total loss of reflex was induced at a faster rate with higher concentrations of anesthetic in all groups. The recovery time generally increased as the concentration of the anesthetic increased. These findings suggest that CEO, BEO, and LEO are all novel potential anesthetics for aquaculture, and the optimal concentrations were identified as 150 μL/L (A5; 156 ± 1.7 s and R3; 165 ± 2.9 s), 125 μL/L (A5; 176 ± 3.5 s; R3; 125 ± 2.0 s), and 200 μL/L (A5; 20.1 ± 2.4 s and R3; 162 ± 3.4 s), respectively. When considering the active ingredients of EOs, this study also demonstrated that future studies should be focused on the major components such as linalyl acetate, 1.8-cineole, α-pinene, geraniol, and linalool. Their synergistic effects should be examined in herbal anesthetic treatments, since new commercial anesthetics will likely contain them.

Anesthetic and sedative efficacy of peppermint (Mentha piperita) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oils in blue dolphin cichlid (Cyrtocara moorii)

    Can, Erkan; Sümer, Esma

The use of different essential oils (Eos), which are considered as a good alternative to synthetic materials, is increasing day by day in fish species. Nevertheless, studies on the anesthetic effect of peppermint Eo (Mentha piperita; MPEo) and lavender Eo (Lavandula angustifolia; LAEo) are scarce. In the present study, the effective concentrations of three anesthetic materials (MPEo, LAEo, and MS-222) were previously determined in the concentrations range of 100–400 ppm in Cyrtocara moorii juveniles (4.92 ± 1.03 g and 7.13 ± 1.22 cm) with the criteria of appropriate induction time (AIt) and ready recovery time (RRt) (Trial 1). Afterwards, four different groups were established at three different sedative concentrations (10, 20, and 30 ppm and a control group without anesthetic additive) for transporting (Trial 2). The study concluded that MPEo and LAEo can be used as anesthetic and sedative agents in tropical fish species safely. The use of 100 µL L–1 (183.5 s AIt and 227.8 s RRt) and 300 µL L–1 (109.2 s AIt and 420.0 s RRt) MPEo and LAEo, respectively, was sufficient for deep anesthesia, whereas concentrations in the range of 10 to 30 µL L–1 are recommended for fish transport.
