On Mongolian loanwords in Kipchak dictionaries - II
Özet
The Kipchaks (Cumans) appeared on the stage of history between 9th and 11th centuries along the banks of the Irtysh River, together with the Kimeks. Before the Mongol conquest, they lived in a vast region extending from the Irtysh River to the Middle Volga region, including the northern steppes of the Black Sea. Beginning in the 13th century, the Mongol expansions brought about major political and geographical changes in Central Asia. These changes also affected the Kipchaks. After years of conflict, some Kipchaks had to leave the places they lived in, while those who remained in Dasht-i Kipchak came under Mongol rule. During this period, they influenced the Mongols in terms of language and culture, while also being influenced by them. This interaction, resulting from their coexistence, was also reflected in the language and made it necessary to identify the Mongolian elements in Kipchak. For this reason, this study was prepared as a continuation of the article titled “Mongolian Elements in Kipchak Dictionaries” previously published in the Yearbook of Turkic Studies - Belleten. In that study, 60 Mongolian loanwords found in Kipchak dictionaries were evaluated. In the present study, Mongolian words beginning with b in the same works, which were not examined in the previous study, are analyzed. These are as follows: baġana, baġırçı, bedene, besrek, boġavul, boḳtaḳ, bosaġa, botaŋ, bögey-, buv. Thus, this study, together with future research on Mongolian loanwords in Kipchak, will continue to contribute to their identification of these elements in Kipchak dictionaries.
