The Adventure of Turkish Folk Music with Mass Media in the Context of the Music Industry in Turkey: The Era of Radio and Record

MakaleAçık Erişim

Özet

This study historically assessed to what extent Turkish folk music has gained ground in radio and record technology from the mass media. In this context, the study initially drew a general framework of folk music and then reviewed the radio period—the first occasion to perform this genre of music institutionally. It subsequently provided information about the music industry and its development in Türkiye in line with the subject's scope, attempting to exemplify the place of folk music in the record industry. Finally, it analyzed the evolutionary process of "Anatolian Pop," one of the popular music genres of the period that began to gain popularity in Turkey in the 1960s, striving to assess the relationship between this musical genre and folk music by carefully selecting some sample records. As part of the adopted qualitative study approach, the study performed document analysis and subsequently conducted content analysis by listening to representative records, concluding that both the radio and the record industry have provided diversity in folk music production.
