Zinc (Zn) and its alloys exhibit great potential for utilization in biodegradable bone implants. Zn-1Cu biodegradable alloy was produced and were cold rolled at two different deformation rates of 47 and 61%. The samples have been bioceramic coated with the sol–gel method and microstructure-mechanical property changes, corrosion behavior and biocompatibility of the samples were investigated. They were characterized by Optical, SEM, XRD and wettability analysis. The rolled samples showed a significant increase in hardness when compared to the non-rolled samples. The unrolled and 47% rolled samples showed better corrosion resistance compared to 61% rolled samples. Antibacterial effects of the base and sol–gel-coated groups showed higher cell viability ratios than the uncoated groups. Cell viability increased significantly in 47% of the rolled samples after 24, 48, and 72 h, however decreased by up to 70% in 61% of the rolled samples. Graphical abstract: (Figure presented.).

Zinc (Zn)-based biodegradable alloys have been at the forefront of absorbable biomaterial research in recent years due to their high biocompatibility and corrosion rates. The arc melting process was used to produce the Zn–1Cu–1Ag biodegradable alloy. The influence of different plastic deformation rates on the microstructure of the material was examined after the cold rolling at deformation rates of 47% and 61%. The undeformed and deformed alloys have been hydroxyapatite-coated using the electrophoretic deposition process to improve its surface, corrosion, and bioactivity properties. Optical, XRD, SEM, and EDS examinations were used to analyze the samples’ uncoated, coated, and rolled-unrolled forms. The nucleation of the (Ag, Cu)Zn4 secondary phase was formed during the rolling process. Hardness and compression tests were used to determine the mechanical properties of cast and rolled alloys, and in vitro corrosion tests were carried out in simulated body fluid. Antimicrobial and cell viability tests are executed to demonstrate the biocompatibility of the deformed and HA-coated Zn–1Cu–1Ag alloy. The mechanical properties were improved after the rolling process, with the highest results found in 47% of the rolled samples exhibiting a compressive strength of 412.65 ± 0.5 MPa and 61% of the rolled samples exhibiting a hardness value of 88.1 ± 0.5 HV. The samples that were rolled (61%) and coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) exhibited the highest level of corrosion resistance. The antimicrobial tests revealed that the rolled and HA coated Zn1Cu1Ag groups exhibited greater inhibition rates (47 and 61%) compared to the other groups when tested against E. coli. The HA-coated groups exhibited good cell viability ratios, with the maximum viability seen in the rolled and HA-coated group at 47%.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1Influence of chemical etchings on surface properties, in-vitro degradation and ion releases of 316l stainless steel alloy for biomedical applications
Say, Y.; Aslan, N.; Alla, A.M.A.; Özmen, H.
Different surface treatments are applied to improve the surface properties of metallic biomaterials. Chemical etching is one of the common techniques used for roughening the surface. In this regard, the effects of different chemical media on the surface roughness, degradation, and ion release of 316L SS steel were investigated in this study. The 316L SS steel was exposed to chemical etching in six different chemical media including HNO3, H2SO4, HCl, HClO4, NaOH and Na2CO, at four different concentrations (1, 2, 4, and 8 Molar), and at three immersion times (10, 60, and 180 min). SEM, EDS, and XRD analyses were used to examine the morphological and chemical impacts of chemical etching on sample surfaces, and roughness was measured on all sample surfaces. The effect of surface treatment on the degradation and ion release of the samples was comparatively examined. Characterization analyses indicated that the HNO3, H2SO4, and HCl media did not cause a significant reaction on the surface of the 316L SS. On the other hand, different phases were observed on the sample surfaces exposed to HClO4, NaOH, and Na2CO3 media. It was determined that the roughness had no linear correlation with the concentration and immersion time, and similarly, the degree of degradation and amount of ion release displayed no change depending on the roughness. Samples etched in H2SO4, HClO4, NaOH and Na2CO3 provided the highest roughness. It was found that H2SO4 caused a significant increase in the amount of ion release.

Ali, L.A.; Dikici, B.; Aslan, N.; Yilmazer, Y.; Sen, A.; Yilmazer, H.; Niinomi, M.
In this study, the corrosion and surface properties of non-toxic and non-allergenic β-type Ti–29Nb–13Ta–4.6Zr alloys (TNTZ) coated with TiN, ZrN, and CrN layers using the PVD technique were investigated under in-vitro conditions. The coatings' hardness, adhesion resistance, and antibacterial properties were also studied, with a focus on their potential usage as biomaterials. The corrosion tests were conducted using potentiodynamic polarization, the hardness tests were conducted using the Knoop method, and the adhesion tests were conducted using pull-off tests. The wetting properties of the coatings were examined through contact angle and 3D morphological analysis. The coatings were characterized using SEM-EDS and XRD. The results showed that the adhesion resistance of all coatings was significantly higher than the expected adhesion strength for biomaterial coatings, while their corrosion resistance was higher compared to the uncoated alloy. Besides, the study demonstrates the potential of TiN, ZrN, and CrN coatings on β-type TNTZ for use as a biomaterial with desirable surface and antibacterial properties.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ2Fabrication of hydroxyapatite-based nano-gold and nano-silver-doped bioceramic bone grafts: Enhanced mechanostructure, cell viability, and nuclear abnormality properties
Demirel, M.; Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Arslan, M.E.
In this study, nano-gold (nAu) and nano-silver (nAg) were doped at the molar ratios of Molar5–Molar30 to the Hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based bioceramic bone graft synthesized by the sol–gel method. The effects of nAu and nAg on structural, mechanical, cell viability, and nuclear abnormality of the synthesized bioceramic grafts were evaluated. The chemical and morphological properties of the bone grafts after production were examined through XRD and SEM–EDX analyses and mechanical tests. To determine the biocompatibility of the bone grafts, cell viability tests were performed using human fibroblast cells. In the cytotoxicity analyses, only HAp and HAp-nAu5 grafts did not show toxicological properties at any concentration, while HAp-nAg5 among the nAg-containing grafts gave the best results at the 200–100 μg/mL concentrations and showed significant cytotoxicity in human fibroblast cells. The other nAu-containing grafts showed toxicological properties in the concentration range of 200–50 μg/mL and nAg-containing grafts in the concentration range of 200–100 μg/mL against the negative control. The micronucleus (MN) analyses showed that the lowest total MN and L (lobbed) amounts, while the lowest total N (notched) amount, was obtained from the only HAp graft. It was found that the nAg-doped bone grafts gave higher total MN, L, and N amounts compared to the nAu-doped bone grafts. Furthermore, while the mean nuclear abnormality (NA) values of all grafts gave close results, the highest values were again obtained from the nAg-doped bone grafts.

Kurnaz Yetim, N.; Aslan, N.; Özcan, C.; Koç, M.M.
Heavy metal ions threaten public health and marine life; thus, removal of heavy metals is essential for the environment. Bi2S3 nanostructures are active materials which used in various applications. In this work, we produced Bi2S3 nanoflowers using hydrothermal synthesis and assessed their Cd2+ ions removal capability. Structural properties of the Bi2S3 nanoflowers were assessed by various like scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction. Chemical characteristics of the materials were confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray spectra. Different parameters affecting the Cd2+ ion recovery was worked some of which are adsorbent amount, Cd2+ ion concentration, pH, adsorbent time, eluent type and amount, etc. For cadmium, the optimum pH was determined 8.0 for 1 M HNO3 eluent. Optimum adsorbent amount was determined as 150 mg while optimum recovery duration was found as 30 min. Bi2S3 nanoparticles managed to achieve 99.3% Cd2+ recovery rate in 5 mL eluent volume, for optimum condition. The adsorption capacity of the Bi2S3 nanoflowers was found to be promising and therefore, it was illustrated that Bi2S3 nanoflowers are good candidates as sorbent for water remediation applications.

Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Dikici, B.; Sinirlioglu, Z.A.
The effect of Hydroxyapatite (HA)-based coatings reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on porous-Ti6Al4V (P-Ti6Al4V) alloys in terms of electrochemical corrosion and cell viability for potential biomedical applications was investigated in this study. The scaffold-porous surfaces of P-Ti6Al4V were coated by the biocomposite structure of HA and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) at various porosity rates (40, 50, and 60%) by using the sol–gel dip-coating method. The results of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 wt% rGO-HA coatings were compared to coatings that contained only HA (free-rGO). Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometer, and scanning electron microscopy were used for structural and morphological characterizations. The coatings in vitro corrosion susceptibilities were tested in simulated body fluid at 37 °C. Compared to free-rGO coatings, the results showed that rGO reinforcements phases reduced the corrosion rate of the scaffolds. The corrosion rate increased as the porosity content of the scaffolds increased. In vitro cell viability tests revealed that samples of 0.5 and 1.0 wt% rGO-HA coating groups performed better than the control and 1.5 wt% rGO-HA samples. Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Aksoy, M.E.
Boron doped (5 %, 10%, and 15 wt.%) Hydroxyapatite (B-HA) biocomposites were syntesized and coated on 316L SS and NiTi (Ni-45Ti) metallic substrates by using the electrophoretic deposition process (EPD). The morphological and structural characterization of the coatings was executed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction devices (XRD). Antibacterial tests were conducted using Escherichia coli (E. coli, JM103) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus, ATCC29293) microorganisms. The mitochondrial activity assay (MTT)-[3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] was used to examine cell viability and cytotoxicity in Saos-2 osteoblast cells. HA and boron peaks, as well as B-TCP and metallic components, were detected in XRD examinations. Porous morphologies were generated on the surface with boron doped B-HA coatings, as revealed by SEM views. Antibacterial activity studies revealed that both metallic coating groups, notably with boron doping, demonstrated antibacterial activity against gram-negative E. coli and gram-positive S. aureus. The antibacterial activity of the 316L group was shown to be better than that of the NiTi group in comparisonal testing. The syntesized boron-doped biocomposite coatings did not have any detrimental effects on living cells, according to cell viability studies. The cell viability rate was found to be greater in NiTi coatings than in 316 SS coatings, and the impact was amplified by the addition of boron.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021Scopus SJRQ2Effect of graphene reinforcement on hybrid bioceramic coating deposited on the produced porous Ti64 alloys
Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.
Porous-Ti64 alloys (P-Ti64), produced at various porosities by hot-pressing technique with the help of Mg spacer, were coated by hybrid-Graphene Oxide (rGO) reinforced-hydroxyapatite (HAp), using the sol–gel method. The synthesized rGO powder was used in reinforcing HAp by the Modified Hummers method having 30 µm particle size and nano (nm) scale layer thickness. Hybrid coatings were executed on Ti64 substrates in four different groups as single-HAp, HAp reinforced with 0.5 wt%, 1.0 wt% and 1.5 wt% rGO for three different porosities (41, 52, and 64%) were characterized by FT-IR, Raman, XRD and SEM. The average 21 µm coating film thicknesses were obtained and desirably, the only superficial pores of the substrates were closed by coating material rather than the inner connected open pores. It was also shown that 0.5 wt% and 1.0 wt% rGO reinforcements into HAp prevented crack formation on the Ti64 surfaces, whereas 1.5 wt% rGo reinforcement and single-HAp coatings caused. The highest adhesion strength values were achieved at low porosities (41–52%) and of 0.5–1.0 wt% rGO reinforcements through the adhesion tests.

Aslan, N.; Aksakal, B.; Findik, F.
Porous-Ti6Al4V (P-Ti6Al4V) alloys were produced using the hot pressing and spacer methods for hard tissue biomedical applications and in particular, the effects of porosity on the mechanical and morphological properties of the structures were investigated. P-Ti6Al4V structures having the homogeneously distributed porosities at 41.08, 52.37 and 64.10% were fabricated by adding 40, 50 and 60% spherical magnesium (Mg) powder with 350 μm particle sizes in average as spacers and evaporating magnesium via the atmosphere-controlled sintering. The obtained porous structures were characterized by SEM, XRD and EDS. Furthermore, the strength and elastic modulus were evaluated by performing compression tests. Elastic modulus and densities were found to be 40–171 MPa, 2–5 GPa and 1.59–2.61, respectively and these values have been shown to decrease with an increase in porosity. The achieved density and mechanical property values, in particular, elastic modulus are close to human bone and within acceptable ranges for with biomedical application purposes. In addition, it was also found out from the analysis of produced P-Ti6Al4V that macropores were responsible for mechanical anisotropy contributed to formation of homogeneous and inter-connected open pores. Aksoy, M.E.; Aksakal, B.; Aslan, N.; Dikici, B.
Abstract: In order to provide an effective prevention to 316L implants, a synthesized bioceramic was coated by using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The effect of boron addition into hydroxyapatite (HA) on surface morphology, adhesion and corrosion resistance of the implant has been examined. Boron doped HA (B–HA) was synthesized by a simple chemical acid-base method with 5, 10, and 15 wt % boron additions to coat on 316L implants. The synthesized B-HA was coated on the substrates and the coated surfaces with and without B additions. Sintering took place at different temperatures and sintering rates. The coatings were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT–IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Furthermore, adhesion and in vitro corrosion tests were conducted. The influence of boron additons on adhesion and corrosion resistance of 316L have been revealed for the coated substrates at different B additions. It was shown that boron addition increased the adhesion and corrosion resistance of the bioceramic coatings. Furthermore, the sintering effect on adhesion was also evaluated and the highest adhesion as 25.8 MPa has been reached at 750°C for 90 s and 5°C min–1 sintering conditions. It was found that using iodine as EPD dispersant has increased the charging ability of the B–HA powders in the suspension and hence eased deposition rate. The study revealed that boron-containing hydroxyapatite coatings can provide crack-free surfaces that providing high adhesion and hence increase the corrosion resistance of metallic implants. Through the results, it was also shown that the network between powders was improved and hence adhesion was increased with increasing B addition.

Aksoy, M.E.; Aksakal, B.; Aslan, N.; Dikici, B.
Metallic implants are functionalized with coatings due to the need to protect against biological corrosion in the body. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has desirable biocompatibility and structural properties, but poor mechanical properties limit its use as a standalone coating. In this study, boron-doped hydroxyapatite (B-HAp) biocomposites containing 5, 10, and 15% boron by weight were synthesized by the sol-gel method and applied as a coating to NiTi using electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The deposition was carried out for 60, 90, and 120 s, and sintering at 750 °C for 75 minutes under vacuum. The coated substrates were then characterized by XRD, SEM, and FT-IR, and their adhesion strengths and in-vitro corrosion behaviors in simulated body fluid were compared with uncoated samples. The results showed that the microporous powders formed well-bonded structures, which positively affect adhesion strength. The highest adhesion strength (30 MPa) and corrosion resistance were achieved with 15 wt.% B-HAP coating at 120 s deposition time and 76.5 μm coating thickness.
