Evaluation of the Effect of Different Extraction Temperatures on the Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Ocimum basilicum (Basil) Plant

    Aydogdu, Burcu; Unal, Ilkay

The eco-friendly green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using Ocimum basilicum (basil) extract at varying extraction temperatures (40°C, 60°C, 80°C, 100°C) was investigated to determine the optimal conditions for nanoparticle formation. Analysis methods such UV-Vis spectrophotometry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and TransmissionElectron Microscopy (TEM) confirmed the crystalline, spherical nature of AgNPs and identified phytochemicals acting as capping and reducing agents. Notably, the extraction temperature was found to influence both the DPPH radical scavenging activity and the structural properties of AgNPs. According to TEM analysis results, it was observed that high extraction temperatures increased the nanoparticle formation efficiency but created a wide size distribution. The crystallite sizes, calculated using the Scherrer equation, for AgNPs synthesized at different extraction temperatures, were determined to be 12.45 nm, 18.77 nm, 17.76 nm, and 16.03 nm, respectively. The hydrodynamic sizes of the AgNPs were found to range between 158.1 and 333.7 nm. The study highlights the critical role of extraction temperature in the synthesis process, suggesting 40°C as the optimal temperature for achieving efficient and environmentally friendly synthesis of AgNPs with enhanced biological activities.

Aydogdu, Burcu; Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Unal, Ilkay

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs) that functionalized and loaded Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) were investigated to adsorp doxorubicin hydrochloride (DXR). DXR release behavior efficiency was determined using kinetic studies. DXR agent was treated into fMWCNTs@AgNPs material with different drug loading rates. The material was successfully established and characterized using transmission electron microscopy, and fourier transform–infrared spectroscopy. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to elucidate the effect of temperature on mass loss and X-ray diffraction analysis was systematically assessed the crystalline state of DXR. Various kinetic models including Higuchi, Baker Hixson-Crowell, and power-law were applied. It was revealed that DXR has more binding affinity to the fMWCNTs@AgNPs material system surface as a nanocarrier at pH 7.4 and showed more release at pH 5.0. Functionalized material confirmed its efficiency as pH-based drug delivery system. Used material can be utilized as promising nanocarriers, and findings will contribute to the rational design of novel delivery tools for drugs.

Development of new generation cakes fortified with zinc oxide nanoparticles

Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Aydogdu, Burcu; Ince, Muharrem

This study aimed to develop new generation cakes that were fortified with calcined ZnO nanoparticles (CZnO), uncalcined ZnO nanoparticles (UCZnO), beads (B(CZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the CZnO with sodium alginate (SA), and the beads (B(UCZnO)) synthesized by encapsulating the UCZnO with sodium alginate (SA) and investigated the zinc (Zn) release in fortified cakes in simulated body fluids (SBF). The present study represents a novel method for increasing intestinal absorption and bioavailability of dietary zinc with zinc nanoparticles for use in the preparation of Zn fortified cakes as a dietary supplement to compensate for zinc deficiency in humans. The results revealed that a rapid increase in the release time and rate in the SGF solution was noted in the UCZnO added cakes. It was attributed to increased intestinal absorption and bioavailability as a result of the ultra-small size of ZnO. Also, ZnO release kinetics in SBF was also studied and data were adjusted into different kinetic models involving zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer–Peppas models. The present investigation recommends adding UCZnO to the cakes to control and increase the release from the cakes.

Green Synthesis and Encapsulation of Superparamagnetic Magnetite for Mercury (II) Removal: Adsorption Isotherms, Adsorption Kinetics, and Thermodynamic Studies

Alp Kavlo, Hevidar; Ince, Muharrem; Kaplan Ince, Olcay; Aydogdu, Burcu; Ozcan, Cemile

Mercury (II) ions have significant ecological impacts. In the current study, magnetized iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were green synthesized and encapsulated with alginate (ALG). The nanoparticles were converted into a composite (Fe3O4/ALG). The Fe3O4/ALG beads were used to remove Hg (II) from industrial wastewater. Characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy—energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA). A central composite design (CCD) approach was performed to define the experimental conditions providing the highest global adsorption efficiency and to optimize the pH, temperature and adsorbent mass. Hg (II) concentrations were determined by flame and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS and ETAAS). The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 1.2 mg L−1 and 3.5 mg L−1 for FAAS and 0.2 µg L−1 and 0.5 µg L−1 for ETAAS, respectively. Additionally, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models were employed to determine the adsorption mechanism. The adsorption capacity of Fe3O4/ALG was determined to be 49.18 mg g−1 by the Langmuir model. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption of Hg (II) best fitted the pseudo-second order model. The Gibb’s free energy (ΔG°) values showed that the adsorption of Hg (II) on Fe3O4/ALG occurred spontaneously.

Determination of Antioxidant Capacity, Phenolic and Elemental Composition in Syriac (Mardin) Wines by using Chromatographic and Spectrophotometric Methods

Sanyurek, Nesrin Karaca; Ince, Olcay Kaplan; Aydogdu, Burcu; Ince, Muharrem

Free radicals are responsible for many health problems, especially oxidative stress-related diseases. With conscious nutrition and the use of natural antioxidants, it is now possible to cope with these diseases or minimize their effects. The aim of this study was to determine pH, total acidity, total SO2, free SO2, relative SO2, dry matter, density, alcohol content, reducing sugar, ash, CUPRAC, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity, total phenolic content, elemental composition, and some phenolic compounds of Syriac (Mardin) wines. Estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotients (THQ), total target hazard quotients (TTHQ), and relative risk (RR) were calculated, to assess a health risk resulting from regular consumption of Syriac wines. The elements EDI values through consumption of wines were less than the recommended dietary allowance values. Obtained THQ values were less than 1. When the obtained results are compared with the levels set by regulatory authorities, the investigated wine consumption does not pose a toxicological risk based on EDI, THQ, TTHQ, and RR values. In addition, this study showed that the Syriac wine’s antioxidant capacities are high and rich in phenolic compounds and elements.

Experimental design approach for ultra-fast nickel removal by novel bio-nanocomposite material

Ince, Olcay K.; Aydogdu, Burcu; Alp, Hevidar; Ince, Muharrem

In the present study, novel chitosan coated magnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles were successfully biosynthesized from mushroom, Agaricus campestris, extract. The obtained bio-nanocomposite material was used to investigate ultra-fast and highly efficient for removal of Ni2+ ions in a fixed-bed column. Chitosan was treated as polyelectrolyte complex with Fe3O4 nanoparticles and a Fungal Bio-Nanocomposite Material (FBNM) was derived. The FBNM was characterized by using X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FTIR) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) techniques and under varied experimental conditions. The influence of some important operating conditions including pH, flow rate and initial Ni2+ concentration on the uptake of Ni2+ solution was also optimized using a synthetic water sample. A Central Composite Design (CCD) combined with Response Surface Modeling (RSM) was carried out to maximize Ni2+ removal using FBNM for adsorption process. A regression model was derived using CCD to predict the responses and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and lack of fit test was used to check model adequacy. It was observed that the quadratic model, which was controlled and proposed, was originated from experimental design data. The FBNM maximum adsorption capacity was determined as 59.8 mg g−1. Finally, developed method was applied to soft drinks to determine Ni2+ levels. Reusability of FBNM was tested, and the adsorption and desorption capacities were not affected after eight cycles. The paper suggests that the FBNM is a promising recyclable nanoadsorbent for the removal of Ni2+ from various soft drinks.
