Prevalence of Depression and Associated Factors in Pregnant Women Attending the Emergency Obstetrics Clinic; [Acil Kadın Doğum Polikliniğine Başvuran Gebelerde Depresyon Sıklığı ve Etkileyen Faktörler]

Ak, Öznur; Beydağ, Kerime Derya; Dal, Nursel Alp

The goal of this descriptive study was to assess the prevalence of depression among pregnant women attending the emergency obstetrics clinic and to evaluate the relationship between sociodemographic, obstetric, and social-life characteristics and depression levels. The study was conducted at the University of Health Sciences Sarıyer Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital between June 6, 2025, and August 1, 2025. The study population comprised 720 pregnant women, and the sample consisted of 251 volunteer pregnant women selected at random. Data were collected using a researcher-developed questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The mean BDI score was 10.65 ± 7.02. The vast majority of pregnant women exhibited mild depressive symptoms. While no significant differences were found between depression and educational level, attendance at childbirth preparation courses, or number of pregnancies, significant associations were identified between depression and economic status, type of marriage, whether the pregnancy was planned, the belief that social life would be restricted, a perceived negative impact on sexual life, deterioration in relationships with the spouse, and exposure to verbal violence (p < 0.05). Depression during pregnancy is a major public health problem and is shaped by multifactorial influences. It is recommended that psychosocial assessments be integrated into antenatal follow-up, that at-risk groups be identified early, and that appropriate counseling services be provided. Depression screening should be conducted during routine obstetric follow-ups, and pregnant women in high-risk groups should receive psychosocial support and social service support.

The Effects of Mandala on the Hope Levels of Women Diagnosed with Gynecologic Cancers: A Randomized-Controlled Study; [Jinekolojik Kanserli Kadınlarda Mandala Aktivitesinin Umut Düzeyine Etkisi: Randomize Kontrollü Çalışma]

Beydağ, Kerime Derya; Dal, Nursel Alp

Gynecologic cancers, which are a highly stressful and negative experience that affects womanhood, fertility, and the sex life of a woman, also cause multiple negative effects on women’s health. This study was conducted to determine the effects of mandala practice on the hope levels of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancers. This randomized controlled trial was conducted between March 1 and September 1, 2021, and involved 90 inpatients in the oncology department of a private hospital in western Turkey. The study included patients diagnosed with gynaecological cancer who could read and write Turkish and had a diagnosis period of at least three months. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Herth Hope Index. In the analysis of the data, the t-test for independent groups was used for numbers, percentages, means, standard deviations, and comparisons between groups. There was no significant difference between the pretest Herth Hope Index (HHI) scores of the patients in the intervention and control groups (p>0.05). In contrast, the posttest scores of the intervention group were significantly higher than those of the control group. While the HHI scores of the intervention group significantly increased from the pretest to the posttest, the control group scores significantly decreased from the pretest to the posttest (p<0.05). In this study, mandala activity was found to be effective in increasing the hope levels of women diagnosed with gynecological cancers.

Body appreciation around the world: Measurement invariance of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age

Swami, Viren; Tran, Ulrich S.; Stieger, Stefan; Aavik, Toivo; Ranjbar, Hamed Abdollahpour; Adebayo, Sulaiman Olanrewaju; Afhami, Reza; Ahmed, Oli; Aimé, Annie; Akel, Marwan

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset – with data collected between 2020 and 2022 – to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

Relationship between stress perceived by married individuals and attitudes to violence against women in the pandemic

Dal, Nursel Alp; Beydağ, Kerime Derya

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between married individuals’ perceived stress level and violence against women attitudes in the pandemic. Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted on a total of 773 married individuals between January and July 2021. The data were collected using a demographic information form, the perceived stress scale (PSS), and the ISKEBE violence against women attitude scale (ISKEBE Attitude Scale). Results: Of the married individuals, 34.8% were subjected to verbal violence, and 4.7% were subjected to physical violence. In addition, 18.9% of them had a worse marital relationship in the pandemic than that before the pandemic. There was a weak positive correlation between the married individuals’ PSS and ISKEBE Attitude Scale total mean scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: Midwives and nurses should evaluate their patients’ perceived stress levels and violence against women attitudes.

Homophobia levels of parents of nursing students and affecting factors

Beydağ, Kerime Derya; Alp Dal, Nursel

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the homophobia levels of parents of students who receive nursing education and the factors affecting their homophobia levels. Design and Methods: The study was carried out as a descriptive and cross-sectional study on the 375 parents of nursing students. Findings: There was statistically significant difference between the case when parents know that there is a homosexual individual in their immediate environment and the mean The Hudson and Ricketts Homophobia Scale (HRHS) score, as well as between the case when parents know that a friend of theirs is homosexual and the mean HRHS score (p < 0.05). Practice Implications: It should be taken into account that parents' prejudices against homosexuals may also affect the way their children view homosexuals.

Attitudes of Married Muslim Women Regarding Family Planning Methods During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Western Turkey

Dal, Nursel Alp; Beydağ, Kerime Derya

COVID-19 had negative effects upon family planning. Women cannot visit healthcare facilities because of a fear of curfew-related sanctions or exposure to COVID-19. It is seen that religious beliefs are influential especially in terms of family planning method preference and having abortions. This study was conducted to determine the attitudes of married Muslim women regarding family planning methods during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 611 married Muslim women who presented to the family planning outpatient clinic of a public hospital in Western Turkey between 1 September 2020 and 1 March 2021. The mean Family Planning Attitude Scale score of the women was found to be 137.53 ± 27.11. It was observed that, as the mean age of the women increased, their family planning attitudes were more positive, and as their number of pregnancies, abortions and living children increased, their attitudes were more negative (p < 0.05). Women do not want to get pregnant during the pandemic process. This is because the effects of COVID-19 on both themselves and the baby to be born are not known, which worries women. Therefore, in order to transform positive attitudes regarding family planning into behavior, it is recommended to provide effective training and consultancy services during the pandemic period.
