The goal of present study is to find the penolic contents, antioxidant activities and antimicrobial capacities in the seeds of five Salvia L. taxa two of which are endemics (Salvia euphratica var. leiocalycina and Salvia euphratica var. euphratica). The flavonoid and phenolic acid are determined by using HPLC while the antioxidant activities are determined based on different methods. Also, the antimicrobial activities of some Salvia species are determined by using the well agar method. The current study found that the studied Salvia species have low flavonoid. It has been found that Salvia euphratica var. euphratica has high vanillic acid, ferulic acid and rosmarinic acid among the studied taxa. Similarly, it has been found that Salvia euphratica var. euphratica has high DPPH and ABTS radical scavening capacity in all concentrations. It has been also found that Salvia euphratica var. euphratica has highest total phenolic content (372,63±0,87 µgGAE/mg) whilst Salvia tricholoda has low total phenolic content (46,41±1,71 µgGAE/mg). In addition, this study demonstrated that Salvia tricholoda has lowest metal chelating activity (37,35±0,51%). Furthermore, present study found that the lipid peroxidation levels of the studied Salvia taxa are between 18,21±0,37 mg/kg and 21,03±0,22 mg/kg while it has been found that the antibacterial properties of the Salvia taxa under study are altering.

Nhibitory Property of Poly (AN-co-VP) Copolymer on Some Dermatophyte Fungiand Yeasts Causing Fungal Infections

Torgut, Gulben; Kirbag, Sevda; Sönmez, Pınar Erecevıt; Pıhtılı, Güzin

Antimicrobial susceptibility test for poly (AN-co-VP) copolymer, which we think could be an ideal drug in treatment interventions was evaluated with disk diffusion method and minimum inhibitor concentration. In the antimicrobial measurement data, it was determined that the poly (AN-co-VP) copolymer dissolved in pure water is a significant inhibitory property against the growth of yeast (on Candida spp. with 11.33±0.3 mm barrier area) and dermatophyte fungi (on Epidermophyton sp. and Trichophyton sp.with 12.33±0.3 mm barrier area) (p<0.001) and no inhibitory properties were observed in preventing the growth of all bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus megaterium). MIC limit values that prevent the growth of dermatophytes and yeasts supporting the disc diffusion method are 50-100 μL. This study is an alternative approach in order to limit the spread of superficial fungal infections they cause and eliminate these infections that tend to become chronic since this polymer extract has no inhibitory properties on bacteria but prevents the growth of yeast and dermatophytes.

Antibacterial and Antifungal Features of Centaurea urvillei DC. subsp. urvillei that is herboized in Turkey

    Cakilcioglu, Ugur; Sönmez, Pınar Erecevıt

Although there are many studies on the activities of different species, the compounds and effects of Centaurea L., the largest genus of the Turkish flora, on human health, no relevant studies have been conducted on the antimicrobial properties of the usable parts (above ground leaves, flowers) of C. urvillei DC. subsp urvillei against pathogenic microorganisms. This study aimed to show whether it prevents the growth of these microorganisms that cause infectious diseases in humans on bacteria, yeast, dermatophytes that cause infectious diseases in humans via well agar and microdilution method by applying a methanol solution of the usable parts of C. urvillei DC. subsp. urvillei. Regarding the antimicrobial susceptibility results, the plant solution formed a generally sensitive inhibition zone (14.66 mm-11.66 mm inhibition zone-1 diameter) on inhibition of growth of yeast, dermatophyte isolates and other bacteria. This means that 40 mg dose of C. urvillei DC. subsp. urvillei has antibacterial and antifungal that can prevent the growth of all test microorganisms (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Klepsiella pneumoniae clinical isolate, Candida albicans RSKK 02007, Candida glabrata RSKK 014019, Candida tropicalis RSKK 02011, Epidermophyton floccosum RSKK 14024, Trichophyton rubrum RSKK 03022) that cause disease. It is seen when we compared with the control group that there was no significant difference in bacteria, however, a significant difference was observed in yeast and dermatophytes (p
