This study investigates the structural, microstructural, surface-chemical, and radiation attenuation behaviour of high-entropy rare-earth oxide (HEO) powder compositions synthesized as TBC-related candidate coating materials, whose radiation attenuation potential was assessed within a computational Inconel-718-based sandwich model. Four compositions, namely (GdErSmEuYb)2Hf2O7, (GdErSmEuYb)2Ce2O7, (GdErSmEuYb)2Zr2O7, and (GdErSmEuYb)2Si2O7, were synthesized via high-energy ball milling followed by calcination at 1200 °C. X-ray diffraction results revealed the formation of distinct crystal structures depending on B-site chemistry, including defective fluorite and silicate-type phases. SEM-EDS mapping confirmed homogeneous elemental distribution, while XPS analysis demonstrated mixed valence states and different oxygen vacancy concentrations across the compositions. To evaluate radiation attenuation performance, a sandwich-type geometry consisting of a 10 mm Inconel-718 core with symmetrically defined simulated HEO layers was modelled using Monte Carlo simulations. Gamma-ray transmission was analyzed over an energy range of 0.276-1.332 MeV, and fast neutron attenuation was assessed at 4.5 MeV. The results showed that transmission factors decreased with increasing coating thickness, with the effect being more pronounced at lower photon energies. Among the investigated compositions, the Hf-based system exhibited the most favorable predicted attenuation response for both gamma rays and fast neutrons under the defined simulation conditions. Theoretical half-value layer calculations also showed good agreement with the simulation results. Overall, the findings indicate that high-entropy rare-earth oxide coatings may provide an additional radiation attenuation contribution when incorporated as layers in Inconel-718-based systems. However, since direct thermal-barrier properties such as thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, thermal cycling resistance, and thermal-stress behavior were not evaluated in the present work, the present study should be interpreted as a structural and radiation-transport assessment of TBC-related coating candidates rather than a direct demonstration of thermal-barrier performance.

This study represents an initial investigation toward exploring the multifunctional potential of the (ErSmGdYPr)2Hf2O7 high-entropy oxide as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material in radiation environments. Therefore, the evaluated parameters should be considered as a preliminary step rather than a complete representation of the material’s overall performance in such complex applications. In this context, (ErSmGdYPr)₂Hf2O7 powders were synthesized through high-energy ball milling of commercial rare-earth oxide precursors followed by calcination at different temperatures. Structural evolution during synthesis was investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and thermal analysis techniques. The results confirmed the formation of a defective fluorite-type high-entropy oxide structure after calcination at elevated temperatures, accompanied by homogeneous elemental distribution and stable ceramic microstructures. In addition to structural characterization, the radiation interaction behaviour of the synthesized material was evaluated through gamma-ray attenuation parameters and fast neutron removal cross-section analysis. The obtained results indicate that the presence of multiple rare-earth elements provides favorable interaction characteristics with both photons and fast neutrons. These findings highlight the potential of this high-entropy oxide as a precursor for multifunctional coating materials. However, it should be noted that this work represents a preliminary powder-level investigation, and further research on actual coating deposition and thermal testing is required to validate its service performance.

In this study, 6061-aluminum metal matrix composites doped with varying concentrations of ytterbium(III) oxide were synthesized using high-energy mechanical alloying to evaluate their structural, physical, and radiation shielding properties. X-ray diffraction confirmed the retention of the aluminum crystal structure with no secondary phase formation, while scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed homogenous dispersion of Yb2O3 particles within the matrix. With increasing Yb2O3 content, particle densification and structural integrity were significantly enhanced. Gamma-ray and neutron shielding performance was assessed through theoretical modeling and Monte Carlo simulations. At low photon energy, the 20 wt% Yb2O3 composites showed a remarkable increase in linear attenuation coefficients compared to the undoped 6061-aluminum matrix. Neutron removal efficiency also increased by 32% at the highest Yb2O3 content. It can be concluded that Yb2O3 incorporation significantly improves both the photon and neutron shielding performance of the 6061-aluminum metal matrix.

This study provides one of the first comprehensive evaluations of 316L stainless steel composites reinforced with 10 wt.% B4C and varying concentrations of Ho2O3, proposing a new compositional design for simultaneous structural enhancement and dual gamma-neutron shielding optimization. XRD analysis confirmed the predominance of the austenitic phase with minor martensitic peaks at higher Ho2O3levels. SEM and EDX results revealed uniform dispersion and improved densification with increasing oxide content. The 316L-B4C-20%Ho2O3composite exhibited the highest mass attenuation coefficient (0.8953 cm2/g) and linear attenuation coefficient (6.73 cm−1) at 0.1 MeV, demonstrating superior gamma-ray shielding capability. The effective electron density increased from 2.86 × 1023to 5.82 × 1023electrons/cm³, while the energy absorption buildup factor (EABF) showed a consistent decrease with higher oxide concentrations. Although a slight reduction in fast neutron removal cross-section was observed, the composite maintained satisfactory neutron attenuation performance. Overall, the findings indicate that the 316L-B4C-20%Ho2O3system offers a promising balance between structural stability and dual radiation protection, making it a strong candidate for next-generation nuclear shielding materials.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are a novel class of materials known for their complex compositions and exceptional multifunctional properties. In this study, NiCoMnTi-based HEAs were modified with Fe, Cr, and Cu as fifth elements to systematically investigate their structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and nuclear radiation shielding characteristics. The alloys were synthesized via arc melting and characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, VSM, and theoretical modeling methods. The findings reveal that each additional element uniquely alters the alloy’s properties. The Fe-containing alloy exhibited a well-defined lamellar microstructure, the highest saturation magnetization (10.79 emu/g), and a Curie temperature near 450 K, along with strong gamma-ray shielding performance across both low and high energy ranges. The Cr-containing alloy demonstrated soft magnetic behavior, featuring the lowest coercivity (29.64 Oe) and the highest fast neutron removal cross-section. In contrast, the Cu-containing alloy enhanced low-energy photon attenuation due to its higher atomic number but exhibited limited magnetic homogeneity. Despite these differences, all samples displayed stable thermodynamic behavior and comparable buildup factor trends. Overall, the addition of Fe led to a synergistic improvement in both magnetic and radiation shielding capabilities of the NiCoMnTi-based HEA system.

This study explores the gamma-ray and neutron transmission properties of β-Titanium alloys pivotal for their performance in nuclear and biomedical applications. Utilizing the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP 6.3) simulations, we analyzed a spectrum of Ti-based alloys modified with elements like molybdenum (Mo), zirconium (Zr), niobium (Nb), and hafnium (Hf) to determine their radiation attenuation properties. Key parameters such as mass and linear attenuation coefficients, half-value layers, exposure buildup factors, and fast neutron effective removal cross-section values were computed, revealing significant enhancements in attenuation with the addition of high-Z elements. Specifically, alloys like Ti50Hf50 and (TiZr)40Cu60 exhibited superior photon and fast neutron attenuation due to their high-Z constituents. For instance, Ti50Hf50 showed a mass attenuation coefficient of 0.217 cm2/g and a half-value layer of 2.97-cm at 0.1 MeV photon energy, while (TiZr)40Cu60 demonstrated similar performance with a mass attenuation coefficient of 0.198 cm2/g and a half-value layer of 3.26-cm. These alloys also exhibited effective neutron removal cross-section values of 0.115 cm-1 and 0.130 cm-1, respectively. Alloys with lower-Z elements showed less attenuation, which may be beneficial in scenarios requiring reduced radiographic contrast in biomedical applications. The MCNP outcomes were in strong agreement with standard data, affirming the accuracy of computational methods in predicting material behavior. In conclusion, tailored alloy development is crucial for improving radiation shielding and diagnostic visualization, with broader implications for patient safety and treatment efficacy.

Austenitic stainless steels (SSs) are commonly used as in-core and surrounding structural materials in today’s industrial BWR and PWR systems. Such adaptable steels have also been the primary materials studied and used in several advanced nuclear reactor technologies, such as fast breeding and magnetic fusion reactors. In this study, some critical material properties, such as structural, physical, and radiation-shielding properties of REX-734 and 316L SS, were experimentally evaluated and compared to those of a number of other alloys. In addition to homogeneous element distribution, both alloys exhibit strong crystal orientation. The REX-734 alloy has a tensile strength of 1,259 MPa, whereas the 316L SS alloy has a tensile strength of 495 MPa. Moreover, nitrogen in the REX-734 alloy formed ultra-hard nitrides with Cr, Nb, and Si and precipitated into the structure and increased the strength. According to our findings, the mass attenuation coefficient values of the 316L SS sample were slightly higher than those of the REX-734 sample at all energies. It can be concluded that the REX-734 sample, with its exceptional strength qualities and excellent radiation attenuation capabilities, may be a viable nuclear power plant material for future investigations.
