The Surface Decays in Stone Walls

    Dal, Murat; Yardimli, Seyhan

Stone is the longest lasting building material used throughout the ages. However, it is seen that the stone material also deteriorated over time. In this study, first of all, the structural features that affect the use of the stone are mentioned. How the stone is formed determines its technical properties. These technical features form the necessary parameters to decide where and under which conditions the stone will be used. When this process cannot be determined, the decay of the stone can ocur more easily. In the study, after the determination of the technical properties of the stone, the types of degradation that cause the destruction of the stone are mentioned. In the examination of stone weathering types, the subject is discussed under two main headings as internal structure of the stone and external factors. In this context, the decay caused by the internal structure of the stone has been discussed with its mineralogical properties, Grain and crystal structure, chemical and physical properties due to the stone formation. As the second cause of decay, external factors are also considered as physical, physico-chemical effects and mechanical effects, as well as effects related to humans, plants and animals, were transferred by sampling.

Investigation of Earthquake Behaviour of Construction System and Materials in Traditional Turkish Architecture

Yardimli, Seyhan; Dal, Murat; Mihlayanlar, Esma; Cattani, C; Atangana, A; Bulut, H; Hammouch, Z; Baskonus, HM; Mekkaoui, T; Agoujil, S

In this study, it is aimed to present a point of view regarding the behaviour of construction systems implemented in traditional Turkish architecture against earthquakes. In the scope of the study, examples of civil architecture were considered and their structures were evaluated as building elements such as foundation, wall and flooring. Traditional Turkish architecture construction systems can be evaluated in two parts. One of them is the wooden carcass system and the other is the unreinforced masonry system. In the wooden carcass system, the carrier is the load bearing elements used in horizontal and vertical directions. Intermediate parts (strut, diagonal etc.) are placed between these elements to form triangles. The triangles (strut, diagonal) used in the wooden skeleton system comprise highly resistant forms against earthquakes. Moreover, due to the internal structure and physical properties of the wood, which is the skeleton material, the flexibility that it maintains can meet the lateral loads of earthquakes. The second construction system which is the system addressed in this application, is the unreinforced masonry system. In this system, the loadbearing system itself is the walls, which are not resistant to lateral loads. In order to provide this flexibility beams (hatillar) are installed at certain intervals. After the wall is built to a certain height, a different material is laid allowing a plane of movement on the wall. Thus, when the wall is exposed to a lateral load, it escapes from the planes where the beams (hatillar) are present, and is protected against large damages by absorbing the earthquake load. In order to establish that the foundation of the structure can withstand earthquakes by movement, wood is placed at the lower part of the foundation above a layer of sand ensuring lateral movement and flexibility of the building. In traditional buildings the slabs are connected to the building walls with beams (hatillar). Through the agency of the beams (hatillar) formed at the connection points, the slabs can act as a mass so that they can meet the earthquake load. Allowing the structure to move makes it resistant to earthquakes, seismic isolators are used for this purpose by absorbing the earthquake load and moving the foundation of the structure.

The technical analysis of the fireplace chimneys in Tunceli, central district

    Yardimli, Seyhan; Dal, Murat

People need to have shelter, which is one of the basic requirements required in order to maintain healthy lifestyles. We use chimney elements in these habitations in order to ensure thermal comfort. There are various heaters in the buildings, but stoves are used especially in rural areas. Chimneys need to facilitate the outdoor discharge of carbonmonoxide, which is generated during the burning process and which causes poisoning. This structure element can constitute a threat to people’s health whenever it doesn’t fulfill this function. Several types of chimneys are encountered within the scope of developing needs and technical possibilities. Only fireplace chimneys are covered in this study. The objective of this study is to put forward what features are necessary for chimneys to heat structures in a healthy manner. The study was carried out by means of examining the positive and negative aspects of structure chimneys around us, while touching upon standards and welding scans, considering the regulations of BFCMA British Flue and Chimney Manufacturers Association, Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning Building Materials Regulation and The Chimney Manufacturers and Practitioners Association. The study also covers principles that need to be considered in regards to the construction of fireplace chimneys, as well as touching upon the forms and materials to be utilized. Matters such as where chimneys need to be planned out in buildings, how they should be positioned and their heights on roofs, detailing features regarding the roof elements, the necessity for moisture and heat insulation, indicating the distances that must be maintained with neighboring buildings so that they don’t draw in the smoke, then the text was concluded
