Sançar, Taylan
Collision of the Arabian and Eurasian plates has resulted in uplift of the Turkish-Iranian Plateau, where debate continues over how post-collisional convergence is being converted to strain. The internal deformation models of the plateau have taken into account the distribution of deformation in the NW-trending Bitlis-Zagros Mountain Range (BZMR), the southern boundary of the collision. The western end of the BZMR is marked by contrasting topographic relief resulting from the coupling of tectonic and erosional processes. This region providing an excellent record for undertaking quantitative analysis which can improve our understanding of its tectonic evolution. Mountain front analyses reveal that each fault segment located in front of the western BZMR falls within the limits of Class-1 that corresponds to an uplift rate of >0.5 mm yr(-1). Hypsometric and basin asymmetry analysis were analyzed for 93 drainage basins, indicating that weakly to moderately eroded basins can be moderately to strongly asymmetric but show no uniform tilting direction. Channel concavity, integral and knickpoint analyses suggest that, apart from the thrust fault that represents the margin of the collision zone, there is no pronounced single geological constraint that causes differential tectonic uplift and furthermore implies that the effect is distributed across multiple different structures. The findings of this study suggest that continuous lower rate horizontal displacement has occurred in this region since the onset of collision, but also indicates that the western end of the BZMR represents a zone of higher convergence, in which shortening is being converted to the vertical plane strain.

Esen, Yuksel; Dogan, Zulfu Murat
Limonite (Fe2O3.xH(2)O) is a soft or brown, hard iron mineral, usually in yellow colour. It is also used as a pigment since it contains iron ore. It is believed that it can also be used in the production of heavy concrete due to its 60% iron ore content. In this paper, an experimental study was carried out on radiation shielding properties and certain physical and mechanical properties of normal and limonite reinforced concrete. For this purpose, with the normal concretes prepared according to standards, amounts of aggregates were reduced at the rates of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% by volume respectively, and heavy concrete mixes were prepared that were obtained by adding limonite at the same rates in their place. With limonite reinforcement, compressive and flexural strength of the concrete produced decreased, water absorption amount increased and their radiation permeability significantly decreased.

Gulcimen, Fevzi; Karakaya, Hakan; Durmus, Aydin
In this study, sweet basil was dried and its drying parameters were investigated experimentally and theoretically by using newly developed solar air collectors. Proper temperatures were chosen to dry sweet basil and experiments were carried out at different flow rates. At the end of drying experiments, it was determined that total mass of sweet basil decreased from 0.250 kg to 0.029 kg. In drying sweet basil, dimensionless moisture ratios were decreased rapidly to 300 min for 0.012 kg/s, 360 min for 0.026 kg/s, and 450 min for 0.033 kg/s. It was observed that the efficiency of collector was increased at the same rate with air flow changed between 29 and 63%. Among the models in the literature, Page Model was found to suit best for drying sweet basil. Furthermore, a novel mathematical model rendering more valid results for sweet basil and leafy products was developed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Celik, Erkan; Gumus, Alev Taskin
After a disaster occurs, national and international non-governmental humanitarian relief organizations (NGOs), as well as the governmental humanitarian relief organizations (GOs), are involved in carrying out the humanitarian relief operations because of insufficiency in recourses such as lack of equipment and human resources. GOs and NGOs play a crucial role in preparedness and response to natural disasters, especially when available resources of them are not enough. The preparedness and response ability of GOs and NGOs aim to minimize the losses and number of affected people. Therefore, the preparedness and response ability of NGOs are becoming more important to support governmental relief activities. In this paper, a hybrid approach, that consists of interval type-2 fuzzy sets, AHP and PROMETHEE, is proposed to evaluate emergency preparedness and response ability performances of NGOs. The proposed hybrid approach is applied to NGOs in Turkey to evaluate their performances, and is conducted in three phases: (1) determination of critical success factors (CSFs) of humanitarian relief logistics management operations, (2) application of interval type-2 fuzzy AHP for obtaining importance weights of CSFs and (3) application of PROMETHEE based on interval type-2 fuzzy sets to evaluate preparedness and response abilities of NGOs. The aim of this work was to determine the seasonal changes in the activities of selected biomarkers in Capoeta umbla (Heckel, 1843) caught from Uzuncayir Dam Lake (Tunceli, Turkey) and to evaluate the effects of environmental factors on these activities. Fish were sampled on seasonal basis, and superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase activities and levels of glutathione and malondialdehyde in gills were determined. Significant variations of oxidative stress biomarkers were observed between seasons and sites. The results of this study show that seasonal variations of oxidative stress responses and lipid peroxidation in gills of C. umbla are sensitive to the contaminants present in water of Uzuncayir Dam Lake and selected parameters are in valuable biomarkers for monitoring of water systems, since they give an early warning signal of effects of xenobiotics on aquatic organisms at molecular levels which help to prevent their effects at organismal level. Alatas, Bilal
Photosynthetic algorithm (PA) is the newly biosystem-derived heuristic search algorithm that utilizes the dark reaction rules governing the transfer of carbon molecules from one substance into another in the Calvin-Benson cycle and photorespiration. There are only two works using this new algorithm in the literature, one for finite element analysis and one for N-queen problem. This paper presents PA based novel solution techniques in bioinformatics problems such as aligning multiple sequences and discovering association rules within bio-medical data. The simulation results demonstrate the applicability and potential of this algorithm. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2010Scopus SJRQ1A new algorithm for automatic classification of power quality events based on wavelet transform and SVM
Eristi, Hueseyin; Demir, Yakup
This paper presents a new approach for automatic classification of power quality events, which is based on the wavelet transform and support vector machines. In the proposed approach, an effective single feature vector representing three phase event signals is extracted after signals are applied normalization and segmentation process. The kernel and penalty parameters of the support vector machine (SVM) are determined by cross-validation. The parameter set that gives the smallest misclassification error is retained. ATP/EMTP model for six types of power system events, namely phase-to-ground fault, phase-to-phase fault, three-phase fault, load switching, capacitor switching and transformer energizing, are constructed. Both the noisy and noiseless event signals are applied to the proposed algorithm. Obtained results indicate that the proposed automatic event classification algorithm is robust and has ability to distinguish different power quality event classes easily. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Kurtbas, Irfan; Guelcimen, Fevzi; Akbulut, Abdullah; Buran, Dincer
A novel conical injector type swirl generator (CITSG) is devised in this study. Performances of heat transfer and pressure drop in a pipe with the CITSG are experimentally examined for the CITSGs' angle (alpha) of 30 degrees, 45 degrees and 60 degrees in Reynolds number (Re) range of 10,000-35,000. Moreover, circular holes with different numbers (N) and cross-section areas (A(h)) are drilled on the CITSG. In this way, total areas (A(t) = N . A(h)) of the holes on the CITSG are equaled each other. Besides, flow directors having three different angles (beta = 30 degrees, 60 degrees and 90 degrees) to radial direction are attached to every one of the holes. This study is a typical example for decaying flow. All experiments were conduced with air accordingly; Prandtl number was approximately fixed at 0.71. The local Nusselt number (Nu(x)), heat transfer enhancement ratio (Nu(ER)) and heat transfer performance ratio (Nu(PR)) are calculated and discussed in this paper. It is found that the Nu(ER) decreases with increase in Reynolds number, the director angle (beta), the director diameter (d), and with decrease in the CITSG angle (alpha). Likewise, variation of Nu(PR) and Nu(ER) is also essentially similar for the same independent parameters. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
