Polat, Hatice; Karakaş, Sibel Asi; Erçel, Şeyda; Taşci, Gülay
The current cross-sectional study was performed to examine levels of alexithymia and forgiveness in forensic psychiatric patients. Data were collected between March 2022 and August 2022 at a high-security forensic psychiatric hospital affiliated with a city hospital in Turkey. A personal information form prepared by the researchers, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and the Heartland Forgiveness Scale were used to obtain data. Participants comprised 132 forensic psychiatric patients who agreed to participate in the study. A significant negative correlation was found between alexithymia and forgiveness levels of participants (p < 0.01, r = –0.259). In other words, as alexithymia levels increased, participants were found to be less forgiving. In addition, results suggest that forensic psychiatric patients are susceptible to alexithymia and higher levels of forgiveness. Determining forgiveness and alexithymia levels of forensic psychiatric patients will contribute to the structuring of care to be offered to these patients.

Durmaz, Hatice; Karakaş, Sibel Asi; Erçel, Şeyda
The current study examined the relationship between compassion fatigue and professional self-concept in psychiatric nurses. Participants included 156 nurses working in a mental health and disorders hospital in Turkey. Data were collected via a sociodemographics form, the Compassion Fatigue subscale of the Professional Quality of Life Scale, and Professional Self-Concept Scale. Participants exhibited low levels of compassion fatigue and high levels of professional self-concept. A significant negative relationship was found between participants’ mean compassion fatigue scores and mean professional satisfaction, professional competence, and professional self-concept scores (p < 0.05). Professional satisfaction, professional competence, and professional self-concept decreased with increasing compassion fatigue. Nurses should be provided emotional support through in-service training and effective communication to prevent burnout.

Üşenmez, Tülay Yıldırım; Budak, Funda Kavak; Ayhan, Mehmet Osman
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of self-esteem on loneliness in persons with schizophrenia. This study was conducted between August 2020 and August 2021 at a community mental health center affiliated with a research and training hospital in Turkey. This was a cross-sectional study that included 100 individuals with schizophrenia. A Descriptive Characteristics Form (DCF), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), and the University of California Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (UCLA-LS) were used for data collection. The individuals’ total mean scores were 2.47 ± 1.24 for RSES and 56.42 ± 10.00 for UCLA-LS. A moderate negative correlation was found between these scores (r =-0.526, P < 0.01). The results revealed that the persons with schizophrenia had a moderate level of self-esteem and a high level of loneliness, possibly indicating that as self-esteem increases, loneliness levels may decrease.

Durmaz, Yadigar Çevik; Ersöğütçü, Filiz
Methods of restraint can be used to prevent hospitalized psychiatric patients from injuring themselves or others, but use of restraints causes various ethical problems in psychiatric nursing. This study examined the relationship between nurses’ sociode-mographic characteristics, types of restraint methods used, nurses’ opinions about those methods, and their level of ethical sensitivity toward their use. We found the moral sensitivity of our participants to be moderate, and sta-tistically significant differences were found related to marital status, shift type, and restraint method used. Based on our results, we recommend improving nurses’ working conditions, increas-ing their level of ethical knowledge, and expanding the number of stud-ies on these issues.

Üşenmez, Tülay Yıldırım; Budak, Funda Kavak; Ayhan, Mehmet Osman
This study aimed to determine the effect of psychological resilience on hope in individuals with schizophre-nia. This was a cross-sectional study. One hundred and one (101) individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia were included in the study. The Descriptive Characteristics Form, Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), and Herth Hope Scale (HHS) were used to collect data. A pos-itive and moderate correlation was ob-served between the individuals’ mean total HHS scores and mean total BRS scores (P < .05, r = 0.508). Additionally, as a result of regression analysis, hope was found to be associated with 25% of the total variance in psychological resil-ience. The results of this study indicate that as the psychological resilience of the individuals increased, their hope levels increased, or as the hope levels of the individuals increased, their psychological resilience increased.
