Determination and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Drinking Water of Tunceli, Turkey

    Demir, V.; Dere, T.; Ergin, S.; Cakir, Y.; Celik, F.

Tunceli, Turkey is one of the small cities in the Eastern Anatolian Region with substantial natural, cultural and historical heritage that is suitable to be a slow city. Water sources are abundant in the area due to rain and heavy snowfall in the mountains, which seeps into the ground or flows into the rivers. Therefore monitoring and conservation of city's drinking water quality is one of the main issues in the city. The present study was conducted to investigate several heavy metals and cyanide, arsenic, and selenium concentrations of drinking water samples taken from 100 different locations in the city and towns of Tunceli, Turkey during the years 2011 and 2012. In three locations, high levels of copper was found with a range of 2.1-11.5 mg/L, and high levels of arsenic was detected in five locations with a range of 10.5-78.0 mu g/L, exceeding the action levels for copper and arsenic. For health risk assessment, the average daily dose and hazard quotient (HQ) were calculated. The region mean values of HQ were found above 1 for arsenic in the samples collected from Mazgirt, while HQ values were below 1 in the rest of the samples.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bacteriological contamination of drinking water in Tunceli, Turkey. For this purpose, the presence of total coliforms, Escherichia coli, and Enterococci was investigated at ten water sampling stations in the Tunceli province. The microbiological dataset of the ten stations were obtained from the Health Directorate of Tunceli for this study. Detection of E. coli and total coliform was performed using the membrane filtration method, Turkish Standards (TS) 9308- 1.(1) Enterococci were enumerated according to the TS 7899-2(2) method. Varying levels of bacterial contamination were recorded in samples from these ten stations. It was observed that bacterial contamination was highest in the village of Burmagecit. Results indicate that microbiological contaminations were found to be above the allowable amount for drinking waters given by the World Health Organization (WHO). Because of this, appropriate disinfection methods and regular quality control mechanisms must be implemented by the Health Directorate of Tunceli.

Kaplan, Olcay; Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Yildirim, Numan; Tayhan, Nilgun

The drinking water quality is associated with the conditions of the water supply networks, the pollution and the contamination of groundwater with pollutants of both anthropogenic and natural origin. In this study, water samples were taken from four different waterworks in Tunceli, Turkey and heavy metals concentrations (As, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Ni and Hg) were measured. Four sampling sites were pre-defined in different locations of the city. The obtained results showed that, the heavy metals concentrations in water samples did not exceed the values of WHO (World Health Organization), EC (Europe Community), EPA (Environment Protection Agency) and TSE-266 (Turkish Standard) guidelines.

Evaluation of Chemical and Microbiological Contamination Levels in Drinking Water Samples Collected from Towns in Tunceli, Turkey

Yildirim, Nuran Cikcikoglu; Yildirim, Numan; Kaplan, Olcay; Tayhan, Nilgun

This study explored the chemical and microbiological contamination of drinking water from eight towns in Tunceli, Turkey Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and epichloridine were extracted by liquid solid extraction and analyzed by using HPLC, volatile organics were analyzed by GC-MS and acrylamide was analyzed by GC Escherichia coli and total conform detection followed a membrane filtration method Enterococci were detected and numerated by membrane filtration method Most commonly found chemical pollutants were benzene, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), 1-2 dichloroethane, epichloridine, tetrachloroethane, trihalomethane and acrylamide E coli, total conform and enterococci were also found in the drinking water Our results indicate that generally chemical and microbiological contaminations were found below the guidelines for drinking waters given by the World Health Organization, because of the fact that in the sampling area there is not any contaminating source So, according to results these water samples are fit for drinking (C) 2010 Friends Science Publishers
