Başhan, Veysi; Yucesan, Melih; Demirel, Hakan; Gul, Muhammet
The reliability of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) depends heavily on the identification and management of potential failure modes. This study employs a fuzzy-based BWM-MARCOS approach to systematically analyze and prioritize failure modes within wind–solar hybrid systems. The model aims to prioritize the failures considering four important risk parameters: (1) severity of the failure on system, staff, and failure, (2) failure occurrence chance, (3) effort and ease of detecting the cause of the failure, and (4) economic impact of the failure. In this context, four key risk indicators were evaluated to rank failures, revealing that SP1 (cell damage), ESS1 (battery degradation), and WT11 (battery fire) are the most critical due to their potential impact on system operations. Sensitivity analysis confirmed the stability of these rankings under varying parameter weights. Additionally, cross-method validation using fuzzy TOPSIS, SAW, and MARCOS demonstrated high correlation coefficients, underscoring the reliability of the results. Tailored mitigation strategies, including advanced diagnostics, durable materials, and robust monitoring systems, are proposed to address these critical failures. While the current methodology applies to various HRES configurations, future research should incorporate real-world operational data and machine learning techniques to enhance predictive capabilities and dynamic risk management.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Dynamic Analysis and Metallographic Examination of Linings with Different Composite Contents used in the Brakes of a Hydraulic Turbine
Işık, Erdem; Kahraman, Gökhan
The main aim of this study was to find ways to increase the performance and life of generator brake linings, which can lead to cost reduction and adequate downtime periods for hydroelectric power plants. First, the dynamic analysis of the linings used in hydraulic turbines was realized and their reactions were examined under different operating conditions. Second, two types of brake linings with different composite components produced in the market were examined metallographically and tested to determine both the stopping performance and durability time of the turbine-generator unit for a sufficient period of time in the vertical 150-megawatt Francis turbine with approximately 500 tons of rotary weight. As a result of these experiments, the lining with the boron component led to much better results than the other brake linings. It has been determined that the boron-containing lining makes 100 stops more than the other lining and stops 20 s earlier in one stop. Therefore, the use of a composite lining with boron content in the braking systems of hydroelectric power plants significantly reduces maintenance incidents and operation costs as it prolongs brake replacement periods in these plants. - MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ1Mathematical modeling of vibration failure caused by balancing effect in hydraulic turbines
Kahraman, Gökhan; Özdemir, Osman
This article discusses the causes of vibrations depending on unbalanced hydraulic forces in rotating and non-rotating equipment in hydraulic plants within the scope of vibration measurement standards. The radial and axial positions of the turbine shaft, normal operating conditions, the absolute vibration of the signal output velocity during startup and shutdown during unbalance condition of the turbine, the proximity probes have been measured by TMO 793 accelerometer sensor and TMO 793 velocity sensor. The results obtained from the monitoring are analyzed and the first discussion is over the comparison of the current operating levels and vibration standards. Secondly, the comparison is analyzed in order to examine the improvement in vibration level of the elimination of hydraulic imbalance more comprehensively, considering the stability of the hydro turbine-generator unit, a proportional row damping force, proportional-order oil-film force and a hydraulic force and by creating a new non-linear proportional-order mathematical model. Changes in vibration levels and spectral bands for failure types are stated as well. The solution of this integrated and accurate mathematical model shows that it is useful and concise in the diagnosis and prediction of faults in hydropower plants.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ1An interval type-2 fuzzy enhanced best–worst method for the evaluation of ship diesel generator failures
Yucesan, Melih; Başhan, Veysi; Demirel, Hakan; Gul, Muhammet
The environmental destruction in our century necessitates the implementation of more safety-based rules and the strict implementation of failure analysis, especially in the maritime sector. The generator system, considered the ship's powerhouse, is expected to be ready and well-maintained for efficient and safe operations. This study proposes a new methodology to analyze ship generator failures. This method includes a version of the best-worst multi-criteria decision-making method enriched with interval type-2 fuzzy logic (IT2FE-BWM). Enrichment with interval type-2 fuzzy numbers shows that a parameter about how much the decision-maker trusts the pairwise comparisons are added to the model. Thus, a more sensitive methodology has been proposed for the confidence of the maritime sector evaluators. A solid decision mechanism has been developed to prioritize generator failures. In addition, a comparison study with some other BWM derivatives and a creative sensitivity analysis were added to this study and its robustness was tested.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ3Increasing the Power Generation by Raising the Capacity of the Thrust Bearing Oil Cooling System in Hydroelectric Power Plants
Kahraman, Gökhan
Cooling capacity decreases due to faults appearing over time in the thrust bearing oil cooling systems of hydroelectric power plants and cooling process cannot proceed sufficiently. For this reason, while the turbine-generator unit generates energy, the thrust bearing heats up. This temperature problem prevents the unit from operating at full capacity and therefore decreases in energy production. Producing deficient energy in hydroelectric power plants, which is a renewable energy source, causes long-term economic losses for countries. In this study, the thrust bearing cooling system of a vertical Francis turbine, which produces 150 MW of energy per hour, is investigated. The reduction in the cooling capacity over time in turbine thrust bearing cooling system is solved by using exchanger system with additional plate and the power produced by the turbine-generator unit is increased 15 MW/h. This improvement has greatly contributed to the national economy. The method of increasing the cooling capacity applied to the hydroelectric power plant thrust bearings can be applied to all hydraulic turbines. This method will increase the energy production amount of the unit by approximately 10% and it costs approximately 80% cheaper than completely replacing the existing cooling system.
