Luciobarbus esocinus (mangar), a critically endangered mega-fish species (≤ 140 kg) endemic to the Euphrates and Tigris river systems, faces severe threats due to habitat fragmentation. To assess its spatial ecology in the Keban Reservoir, 30 individuals were acoustically tagged and monitored for 218–437 days using 18 receivers deployed in the reservoir. The tagged fish exhibited low site fidelity, with station residency indices (RI) ranging from 0.00 to 0.46 and detection periods lasting 59–153 days. Depth and temperature data (115,318 and 112,789 records, respectively) revealed seasonal habitat shifts: individuals occupied deeper waters in winter (mean 10.1 m), shallower depths in spring (4.4 m) and summer (3.8 m), and tolerated temperatures of 7.4°C–28.4°C. Although depth use was weakly correlated with temperature, trends indicated shallower occupancy during warmer periods. Home range analyses showed a maximum linear home range (LHR) of 36.5 km and the areal home range estimated via minimum convex polygon (MCP) was 6422.8 ha. In addition, kernel density (KD) analysis revealed the 95% KD area was 2877.0 ha, the 75% KD area was 67.7 ha and the 50% KD area was 33.8 ha. Seasonal migrations spanned 25–30 km upstream/downstream from release sites, particularly toward tributaries in spring. Around the Keban Reservoir, 14 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) present and most of these HPP are not designed suitable fish passages. Urgent conservation measures are needed, including Fish Conservation Zones in critical habitats and connectivity restoration via functional fishways, to safeguard this imperilled species in fragmented river-reservoir ecosystems.

Physicochemical and sensory evaluation of fish chips made from Luciobarbus esocinus (Heckel, 1843)

    Kuzgun, N.K.

In this study, fish chips were produced using Luciobarbus esocinus, their fatty acids and amino acids profiles were determined and they were sensorially evaluated. For the preparation of experimental samples, L. esocinus meat was minced and added to a basic chips mixture. After that, the mixture was divided into in two: while pepper sauce was added to one half, the other half had no sauce added. The mixtures with sauce and without sauce were shaped into chips. Two samples of each batch of the chips prepared were cooked using two different methods (baking and frying). In this way four different groups were obtained. Analysis of fatty acids showed that the pre-frying and the pre-baking process resulted in a decrease in all fatty acids except for 18:1n-9 and 18:2n-6. Analysis of amino acids showed that isoleucine, lysine, threonine and, proline were present in the highest quantities respectively. After frying and baking the amounts of leucine, isoleucine, lysine, arginine, phenylalanine, and threonine decreased while the amounts of the valine and histidine remained at the same level. The essential amino acids for humans were found in the fish meat and in the fish chip groups, except for tryptophan. The general acceptability score of the fish chips was highest for group A which consisted of chips with sauce that had been fried (9.28±0.69).

The investigation of the shelf life at 2 ± 1 °C of Luciobarbus esocinus fillets packaged with films prepared with the addition of different essential oils and chitosan

Karaton Kuzgun, Nermin; Gürel İnanlı, Ayşe

In this study, the chemical, microbiological and sensory changes during storage at 2 ± 1 °C of Luciobarbus esocinus fillets coated with edible films prepared with chitosan incorporation of thyme, clove, rosemary essential oils were examined. To create the experimental samples, a total of six groups of L. esocinus fillets coated with different edible films (normal, vacuum-packed, chitosan, chitosan with added thyme oil, chitosan with added clove oil, and chitosan with added rosemary) were used. The food composition of the fillets and experimental samples were determined after they had been coated with edible films. The results of analysis showed that, the preservation period of fresh fillets ended on day 12th, that of vacuum-packed fillets on day 15th, that of fillets coated with chitosan incorporation of rosemary on day 27th, that of fillets coated with chitosan incorporation of thyme and chitosan incorporation of cloves on day 30th. In comparison with the control group, fish spoilage was significantly delayed in samples coated with chitosan incorporation of thyme and chitosan incorporation of cloves (p < 0.05). The lowest bacterial growth, values of PV, TBA and TVB-N were obtained in fish samples coated with thyme + chitosan and cloves + chitosan. In terms of the general acceptability of the fish, as determined by qualified panelists, it was determined that the highest score was given to the experimental group to which essential oil of clove had been applied.

Gillnet selectivity for Luciobarbus esocinus (Heckel, 1843) in Keban Dam Lake, Elazig, Turkey

Yuksel, Fahrettin; Gunduz, Fatih; Demirol, Ferhat

A study was conducted to determine the selectivity of monofilament gillnets with mesh sizes of 50, 60, and 70 mm that are used in Keban Dam Lake for fishing Luciobarbus esocinus (Heckel, 1843). During the study, a total of 394 L. esocinus were caught. Selectivity parameters were estimated using the indirect estimation method developed by Holt (1963). Optimum selection lengths for L. esocinus were calculated to be 36.61, 43.94 and 51.26 cm for gillnets with mesh sizes of 50, 60, and 70 mm, respectively. Common selectivity factor was estimated to be 7.32, with standard deviation 4.58. Length at first maturity of female L. esocinus (50 cm) was compared to the optimum selection lengths of gillnets with mesh sizes of 50, 60, and 70 mm. Results indicate that gillnets with mesh size of 70 mm would be appropriate for harvesting L. esocinus in the Keban Dam Lake, as the optimum selection length (51.26 cm) is greater than length at first maturity.

Some Biological Characteristics of Luciobarbus esocinus Heckel, 1843 Living in Keban Reservoir

Çoban, Mehmet Zulfu; Türkgülü, Ibrahim; Yüksel, Fahrettin; Celayir, Yasin; Yüce, Songul; Eroglu, Mucahit; Yildiz, Nurettin; Sen, Dursun

This study was carried out in Luciobarbus esocinus obtained from Keban Reservoir (Elazig) between March 2008 and October 2009. During the research, it was determined that the percentage of male, female and undefined individuals from 187 L. esocinus were 45.46%, 37.43% and 17.11% respectively. The ages of population were distributed between I and XVII. The lengths of the individuals ranged from 23.0 to 112.4 cm and the weight of them ranged from 118 to 18,042 g. The length and weight equation for population was determined as W-all individuals = 0.0057*TL3.2187 (n= 187, r= 0.98). The highest GSI values of both sexed were obtained in March and these values were decreased rapidly after this month. It was determined that the condition factor increased until age 5 and then, it decreased respectively.
