Zinc(II) phthalocyanine substituted by sulfonamide derivative: Photophysical and photochemical properties

    Şahal, Hakan

Synthesis of two different new compounds, (E)-4-((2‑hydroxy-3‑methoxy-5-nitro benzylidene)amino)-N-(pyridine-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide 1, (E)-4-((2-(3,4-dicyanophenoxy )-3‑methoxy-5-nitrobenzylidene)amino)-N-(pyridine-2-yl)benzenesulfonamide2and 2(3),9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetrakis-[(E)-4-((3‑methoxy-5-nitro-2-(λ1-oxidanyl)benzylidene) amino)-N-(pyridine-2-yl)benzene sulfonamid] zinc(II) phthalocyanine complex 3 was carried out. Their structures were characterized by spectroscopic methods such as Fourier transform infrared, Proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, Ultraviolet-visible, Fluorescence, Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, Time-of-flight mass (except compounds 1 and 2), as well as Elemental analysis. The spectroscopic, photophysical, and photochemical properties of zinc(II) phthalocyanine complex 3, substituted with new benzenesulfonamide derivatives containing different functional groups, were explored in dimethylsulfoxide to determine its usability as a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy. The effects of the presence of tetra-substituted new benzenesulfonamide groups from the peripheral positions of the zinc(II) phthalocyanine ring on the spectroscopic, photophysical, and photochemical properties were investigated and these properties were compared with the properties of the substituted and unsubstituted zinc(II) phthalocyanines. As a photosensitizer for photodynamic therapy, this new phthalocyanine 3 has well solubility in different kinds of solvents without aggregation sufficient fluorescence properties, ability to produce singlet oxygen, and photostability under appropriate light irradiation.

Digyaindoleacid A: 2-(1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-3-oxobut-1-en-2-yloxy)-3-(1H-indol-3-yl)propanoic acid, a novel indole alkaloid

Kwain, Samuel; Tetevi, Gilbert Mawuli; Mensah, Thomas; Camas, Anil Sazak; Camas, Mustafa; Dofuor, Aboagye Kwarteng; Azerigyik, Faustus Akankperiwen; Deng, Hai; Jaspars, Marcel; Kyeremeh, Kwaku

Digyaindoleacid A (1) is one of the novel alkaloids produced by the Ghanaian Paenibacillus sp. DE2SH (GenBank Accession Number: MH091697) isolated from the mangrove rhizosphere soils of the Pterocarpus santalinoides tree growing in the wetlands of the Digya National Park, Brong Ahafo Region, Ghana. This compound was isolated on HPLC at tR ≈ 60 min and its structure determined by MS, 1D, and 2D-NMR data. When tested against Trypanosoma brucei subsp. brucei strain 927/4 GUTat10.1, 1 produced a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) 5.21 µM compared to the standard diminazene aceturate (IC50 = 1.86 µM). In the presence of normal mouse macrophages RAW 264.7, 1 displayed a higher selectivity towards T. brucei subsp. brucei (selectivity indices (SI) = 30.2) with low toxicity. This result is interesting given that the drug diminazene aceturate is considerably toxic and 1 is a natural product isolate. The structure of 1 incorporates the backbone of the amino acid tryptophan which is crucial in the metabolism of Trypanosoma brucei subsp. brucei strain 927/4 GUTat10.1. It is possible that 1, could interfere with the normal uptake and metabolism of tryptophan in the parasite. However, 1 (IC50 = 135.41 µM) produced weak antileishmanial activity when tested against Leishmania donovani (Laveran and Mesnil) Ross (D10).

Extracellular Synthesis and Characterization of Gold Nanoparticles Using Mycobacterium sp. BRS2A-AR2 Isolated from the Aerial Roots of the Ghanaian Mangrove Plant, Rhizophora racemosa

Camas, Mustafa; Sazak Camas, Anil; Kyeremeh, Kwaku

Through the use of genomes that have undergone millions of years of evolution, marine Actinobacteria are known to have adapted to rapidly changing environmental pressures. The result is a huge chemical and biological diversity among marine Actinobacteria. It is gradually becoming a known fact that, marine Actinobacteria have the capability to produce nanoparticles which have reasonable sizes and structures with possible applications in biotechnology and pharmacology. Mycobacterium sp. BRS2A-AR2 was isolated from the aerial roots of the mangrove plant Rhizophora racemosa. The Mycobacterium was demonstrated for the first time ever to produce AuNPs with sizes that range between 5 and 55 nm. The highest level absorbance of the biosynthesized AuNPs was typical for actinobacterial strains (2.881 at 545 nm). The polydispersity index was measured as 0.207 in DLS and the zeta potential was negatively charged (− 28.3 mV). Significant vibration stretches were seen at 3314, 2358, 1635 and 667 cm−1 in FT-IR spectra. This demonstrated the possible use of small aliphatic compounds containing –COOH, –OH, –Cl and –NH2 functional groups in the stabilization of the AuNPs. The effect of the biosynthesized AuNPs on HUVEC and HeLA cell lines was measured at 48 h. IC50 values were determined at 3500 µg/ml concentration for HUVEC and HeLA cell lines at 45.25 and 53.41% respectively.

Developments in transfer hydrogenations of aromatic ketones catalyzed by boron compounds

Pasa, Salih; Gürler, Nedim; Temel, Hamdi; Rafikova, Khadichakhan; Aydemir, Murat

Boron complexes BL1 and BL2 were prepared from O-donor ligands, 2,2′-(1E,1′E)-(ethane-1,2-diylbis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(methane-1-yl-1-ylidene)diphenol (L1) and 2,2′-(propane-1,3-diylbis(azan-1-yl-1-ylidene))bis(methane-1-yl-1-ylidene)diphenol (L2). The complexes were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, LC-MS/MS, TGA/DTA, UV-Vis, elemental analysis, SEM, and FTIR. The transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone derivatives was investigated by the boron complexes in the presence of isoPrOH, as the hydrogen source, under basic condition with NaOH. The results showed that the boron complexes were promising catalytic precursors for transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones in 0.1 M isoPrOH solution (up to 99%). Both steric and electronic factors of this class of molecules had a significant impact on the catalytic properties.
