Mechanical and thermal properties of short banana fiber reinforced polyoxymethylene composite materials dependent on alkali treatment

    Doğan, Akar; Güneş, Çağdaş

The present study aimed to develop a recyclable composite material based on a natural product, namely banana fiber, instead of synthetic reinforcement elements such as glass fiber or carbon fiber in thermoplastic matrix composites employed in many aspects of daily life. Polyoxymethylene (POM) thermoplastic was used as the matrix material. 3 %, 6 %, and 9 % by weight short natural banana fiber was used as reinforcement. Furthermore, the study improved the mechanical and thermal properties of the composite material with chemical improvements based on alkali treatment of banana fiber. Banana fiber and POM was initially mixed mechanically and then extruded at temperatures between 170 and 190 °C to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The mixture obtained by extrusion was initially cooled in the cooling pool and then passed through the crusher to obtain granules. These granules were pressed in plastic injection molds to obtain standard test samples. The ratio of reinforcement material and the variations in mechanical and thermal properties of the composites induced by the alkali treatment are presented in figures and tables. Furthermore, the changes in cross-sectional material images were examined with electron microscopy scans. The tensile and flexural strength of the material improved with alkali treatment.

Characterization of the mechanical and thermal properties of rape short natural-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites

    Kısmet, Yılmaz; Dogan, Akar

In this study, the effects of filler amounts were studied on the mechanical and thermal properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polystyrene (PS) and polyoxymethylene (POM) polymers reinforced with short rape fibers. HDPE-rape, POM-rape and PS-rape fiber composite materials were prepared with different fiber contents and their tensile, flexural, Izod impact and TGA/DTA properties were examined. When tensile and Izod impact properties were compared, it was observed that an increase in the amount of filling in HDPE-based composites did not cause any significant changes in these peoperties, while they were decreased for POM- and PS-based composites. On the contrary to tensile and impact strengths, when the three-point flexural properties were examined, it was observed that the strength values of all these materials increased with increasing the amount of fillers. However, a pronounced increase was observed in the three-point flexural strength of the HDPE-based composite materials. The flexural strength of 30 wt% rape-reinforced HDPE composite was found to be twice that of the pure HDPE. The results of TGA and DTA analyses revealed that the reinforcement element started to burn before the matrix material and therefore burning was delayed in these thermoplastics. As a result, the mechanical properties of HDPE composite materials improved with rape reinforcement. In this way, by using approximately 30 wt% natural filling material in a polymeric matrix, an environmentally friendly material, as well as, significant advantages in cost can be obtained. Change of mechanical properties of powder recyclate reinforced polyolefin based on gamma radiation

    Kismet, Yilmaz

In this study, the changes observed in the mechanical properties of standard test specimens that were produced with powder coating reinforced polyolefin (polyethylene and polypropylene) due to gamma radiation were examined. Matrix material of these specimens included low density polyethylene and polypropylene and 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% electrostatic powder coating waste by weight, and the samples were exposed to 44 kGry gamma-radiation for twenty four hours. Mechanical tests applied to the specimens after radiation demonstrated that the physical bonding mechanism between matrix material and filler material was reinforced. In the mechanical tests, tensile strength, three-point bending strength, and Izod impact strength of the samples were investigated and the results were compared to the results obtained in the mechanical tests when they were not radiated. Thus, the effects of gamma radiation on the mechanical properties of the filler material, and the electrostatic powder coating reinforced polyethylene and polypropylene were determined. Furthermore, section images of the radiated samples were taken with a scanning electron microscope and compared to the section images of irradiated samples to observe the physical bonding mechanism.

Effect of Dried Colza Plant as a Filler on Mechanical Properties, Density and Water Absorption of Low Density Polyethylene

    Kismet, Yilmaz

In this study, mixtures have been obtained by putting dried colza plant as a filling material into low density polyethylene in ratios of 10 %, 20%, 30% in weight, and standard tensile experiment samples are produced from the mixtures by using plastic injection machine. The changes in the mechanical properties, densities and water absorption capacities of the samples have been analyzed and compared. To ensure homogeneity, the mixtures are first prepared in mechanical mixers, and then passed through extrusion machines. The material is granularized at the outlet of the extrusion machine by using crushers. Finally, with the plastic injection machine, this granule material is molded on the standard tensile experiment samples.
