Evaluation of poly(lactic acid) films incorporated with lemon peel extract oil for food packaging materials

    Ertekin, Özlem

The effects of Citrus lemon peel extract oil (CLPEO) at different ratios (0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0%) on poly lactic acid blend films were evaluated concerning some properties of the films in this study. The antimicrobial effect of these films was determined against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhimurium, Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus according to the parallel stick method. Antioxidant properties of Citrus lemon peel extract oil were investigated using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and TEAC (trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity) method. The inhibition of DPPH for Citrus lemon peel extract oil was found to be as (84%), (76%), (71%), and (62%) for CLPEO, PLA2, PLA1, PLA0.5, respectively. Antibacterial effect was detected at CLPEO and PLA2 films, with CLPEO being important as an environmentally friendly packaging material in terms of antibacterial, antioxidant activity, FT-IR, SEM, WVP, opacity and mechanical properties.

Physical and biological characteristics of eco-friendly films added with Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract for packaging materials

    Gürler, Nedim; Ertekin, Özlem

The effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract (CZE) at different rations (0%, 1%, 3% and 5%) on gelatin (GL)–polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend films were evaluated in relation to the structural, tensile strength, physical, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the films in this study. The results showed that water barriers of the film samples decreased, but the UV-blocking property increased and became opaque at the highest GLPVA5 film. The tensile strengths of GLPVA, GLPVA1, GLPVA3 and GLPVA5 films were 1.21, 1.78, 1.62 and 1.95 MPa, respectively. The antimicrobial effect of these films was determined against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhimurium and Bacillus cereus according to the parallel stick method. Antioxidant properties of cinnamon extract were investigated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) methods. The % inhibition of DPPH was found to be 82.00. No antibacterial effect was detected for B.cereus and E. faecalis at 0%, 1%, 3% and 5%. While no activity was observed in 0%, 1% and 3% cinnamon, 7.5 and 3.0 mm zones were detected in S. typhimirium and E. coli, respectively, in 5% cinnamon. The results suggest that the film samples could be used in a potential packaging with antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Investigation of mineral components and antioxidant properties of a healthy red fruit: Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas L.)

Karaaslan, Merve Goksin; Karaaslan, Nagihan M.; Ates, Burhan

The mineral components of the foodstuff consumed by an individual are important in the growth and development of a human being. In recent years red fruits, because of their potential beneficial health effects, are getting attention of both consumers and manufacturers. One of the red fruits, Cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.), was investigated in terms of both mineral components and antioxidant properties. The mineral components include calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and zinc (Zn) in this fruit were determined using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The antioxidant activity tests were applied to the extracts obtained using different solvents to examine the antioxidant properties of this fruit. Statistical analysis indicated that while the best results were obtained from acetone extracts, the lowest results were obtained from water extracts for all antioxidant activity tests (p<0.05). The best average values for DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging capacity, reducing power, total phenolic content and total flavonoid content in acetone extracts were found to be 1053.72±38.12 mg TEAC/100 g FW and 2907.34±152.05 mg TEAC/100 g FW, 5894.99±251.05 mg TEAC/100 g FW, 2979.25±69.40 mg GAE/100 g FW and 255.75±14.92 mg QE/100 g FW, respectively.
