Yücel, Ummahan; Erkal Aksoy, Yasemin; Yaşar Yetişmiş, Habibe; Gök, Çiğdem

Aim and Objectives: This study aimed to determine the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare professionals working in primary care settings in the first year of the pandemic. Background: The healthcare industry has faced an unprecedented burden in the COVID-19 pandemic. Primary care professionals experienced the high level of psychological problems. Design and Methods: A total of 793 healthcare professionals from different regions of Turkey participated in this cross-sectional study. The STROBE (Strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology) checklist was used in the study. Data were collected online. Results: It has been found that more than half of healthcare professionals experienced severe depression, three-quarters experienced anxiety, and almost half experienced stress. It was also found that about half of the participants experienced a high degree of acute and chronic fatigue, and one-fifth experienced low inter-shift recovery. Conclusion: The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of primary care professionals, especially nurses and midwives, are alarming. The problems that arise from the flawed healthcare delivery models and gender inequality, which worsen the usual psychological effects of the pandemic on primary care professionals, should be addressed urgently. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Psychological support and rehabilitative services should be expanded to eliminate the short- and long-term psychological effects of the pandemic on healthcare professionals.

Powder coating waste filler in high-density polyethylene – Variations in morphology, mechanical and thermal performance; [Variationen in Morphologie, mechanischer und thermischer Leistung von Pulverlackrecyclaten als Füllstoff in Polyethylen mit hoher Dichte]

    Kısmet, Y.

In the present study, electrostatic powder coating waste was recycled and employed to reinforce high-density polyethylene. The hydrolysis method was preferred to modify the powder coating waste of various systems, and they were mixed with high-density polyethylene at various weight ratios. The mixtures were prepared in a mechanical mixer and then in an extruder to obtain a homogeneous mixture. This homogeneous structure was pressed into molds with a plastic injection device to obtain standard tensile samples. Mechanical and thermal tests were conducted on the samples. It was determined that the tensile stress of the sample decreased with the increase in filler content. The changes in sample tensile strength were investigated after the samples were aged. Three-point bending strength of the samples was also investigated and it was observed that they became more resistant to vertical loads as the filler content increased. The Izod impact strength of the samples differed based on the filler type and weight ratio. Furthermore, mass loss in the produced mixtures was determined with thermogravimetric analysis. The matrix and filler bonding mechanisms were observed under an electron microscope.

The adverse physical, psychological, and mental health consequences associated with COVID-19 illness are well-documented. However, how specific symptoms change over time and how COVID-19 affects one’s day-to-day activities of daily living (ADL), Quality of Life (QoL), sleep quality, and fatigue severity are not well described. This longitudinal and descriptive study examined the changes in COVID-19 symptoms, ADL, QoL, sleep quality, and fatigue severity within the first 20 days. A convenience sample (n = 41) of non-hospitalized SARS-CoV-2 positive patients were recruited and followed for 20 days. Participants completed self-report measures: COVID-19 symptoms, ADL, QoL, sleep quality, and fatigue severity at days: 1, 10, and 20 following a diagnosis. Findings revealed that symptoms decreased over 20 days (p <.001). In parallel with the decrease in symptoms, QoL and ADL improved over 20 days (p <.05). However, sleep quality and fatigue severity did not improve within 20 days (p >.05). Our findings contribute to the growing evidence that COVID-19 symptoms can linger, especially fatigue and sleep quality, that affect overall day-to-day functioning for at least 20 days after diagnosis. To mitigate the effect of COVID-19 on QOL and ADL, findings underscore the need for clinicians to work collaboratively with patients to develop a symptom management plan for a variety of symptoms including fatigue and sleep quality. Beginning to repurpose existing self-management strategies for the longer term COVID-19 symptoms could be beneficial and help to optimize patient outcomes. Future work should examine these variables over a longer timeframe and among different samples of non-hospitalized patients.

The Effect of Progressive Relaxation Exercises on Pain, Fatigue, and Quality of Life in Dialysis Patients

Kaplan Serin, Emine; Ovayolu, Nimet; Ovayolu, Özlem

Patients receiving hemodialysis treatment may experience several symptoms at the same time, such as fatigue and pain. Progressive relaxation exercises (PRE) have been reported to have positive effect on the control of these symptoms. In this study, a randomized, controlled, and experimental study was conducted to examine the effect of PRE on pain, fatigue, and quality of life in hemodialysis patients; the study was carried out with 48 intervention and 48 control patients receiving treatment in the hemodialysis units of 2 hospitals. Data were collected by a questionnaire prepared by the researcher, which included questions about sociodemographic variables and the disease; Piper Fatigue Scale; Visual Analog Scale that measures pain severity; and SF-36 Quality of Life Scale. The results of study revealed that mean total fatigue score and mean pain score decreased in the intervention group after the application of PRE; whereas no change was observed in the control group (P <.05). It was also found that quality of life physical component mean score and mental component mean score increased in the intervention group after the application of PRE (P <.05).

Aylaz, Rukuye; Karadag, Ezgi; Isik, Kevser; Yildirim, Melek

AimThis study was planned to assess the levels of fatigue and social support in patients with diabetes and to determine the relationship between fatigue and social support in these patients. MethodsA descriptive design was used in this research. The study was conducted between March and June 2013 with 300 sampled patients from 1657 studied participants with type 2 diabetes who presented to the diabetes polyclinics of Malatya State Hospital and Inonu University, Turgut Ozal Medical Center. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support and the Fatigue Severity Scale were used in the study. ResultsWhen the correlation analysis carried out between fatigue severity and social support in patients with diabetes was examined, a significant relationship was found in the negative direction between fatigue severity and family support (r=-0.145, P<0.05) as well as overall support (r=-0.132, P<0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the Fatigue Severity Scale score and sex, education status, occupation, cohabitation, presence of complications, and hemoglobin A1c (P<0.05). Family support was significant only with respect to marital status, occupation, and being employed (P<0.05). ConclusionIt was seen at the end of this research that social support reduced the level of fatigue in a number of patients with type 2 diabetes. Nurses of diabetes patients should carry out fatigue assessments routinely and reflect these in nursing care plans by also associating them with the social support sources of the patient.

Relationship between fatigue and social support in hemodialysis patients

Karadag, Ezgi; Kilic, Serap Parlar; Metin, Ozgur

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fatigue and social support in hemodialysis patients in Turkey. This study was conducted on 73 patients receiving hemodialysis treatment in a hemodialysis unit in the province of Malatya between July and November 2011. A questionnaire consisting of 16 questions for sociodemographic and disease data was used together with the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). In statistical evaluation, the Mann-Whitney U-test, independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Pearson's correlation analysis were used. Correlation analysis between severity of fatigue in hemodialysis patients and social support revealed a significant relationship in the negative direction between fatigue severity and support from family (r=-0.404, P<0.05), support from friends (r=-0.635, P<0.05), support from a special person (r=-0.638, P<0.05) and overall support (r=-0.643, P<0.05). Patients with severe fatigue had low mean scores for support from family, friends, a special person and overall, whereas a high level of social support decreased the level of fatigue. When giving care to patients on hemodialysis, nurses should consider the effect of social support on fatigue and approach their patients from this perspective.
