Positive body image is a pathway between nature contact and life satisfaction across 58 nations

Time spent in nature benefits human mental and physical well-being. However, much of the variance in outcomes of nature contact remains unexplained, suggesting that new mechanistic pathways need to be considered. Here, we tested a novel conceptual model linking nature contact with life satisfaction via pathways involving positive experiences of living in and experiencing the world through the physical self. Using data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS; N = 50,363), representing respondents from 58 nations and speaking 36 different languages, we find that nature contact is associated with greater self-compassion and greater perceived restoration in nature, which in turn are associated with more positive body image. In addition, more positive body image is associated with greater life satisfaction. These associations were robust to sensitivity tests, generalised to all gender identities and age groups, and held individually in almost all national groups and languages. Although replications are needed, we propose that the materialities of natural environments help to link bodily experiences to the production and experience of well-being, a process that is largely stable across national groups.

Job satisfaction mediation in the relationship between work-family conflict and life satisfaction among Turkish academics

Öztürk, Meral; Türk, Ahmet; Tire, Olcay; Gönültaş, Burak M.

This study examined the mediating role of job satisfaction in explaining the relationship between work-family conflict and life satisfaction among Turkish academicians. Employing a cross-sectional study design 645 academicians aged between 24 and 65 (male = 45.1%, female = 54.9%; professors = 12.1%, associate professors = 17.7%, assistant professors = 28.2%, lecturers = 17.8%, research assistants = 24.2%; mean age and SD = 39.72 ± 8.94) completed the Job Satisfaction Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, and the Work-Family Conflict Scale. They also self-reported their demographics. The findings from PROCESS MACRO analysis indicated work-family conflict to predict lower job satisfaction among academicians. Those with higher job satisfaction were also self-reported with higher life satisfaction. Lob satisfaction mediated the relationship between the academician’s work family conflict and life satisfaction for higher life satisfaction. The findings of this study indicate a need to implement work-family and life satisfaction measures to enhance job satisfaction among academics.

The role of technological devices in parent-children interactions: The correlated variables of children’s well-being and life satisfaction

Kılıman, Sevinç; Ergün, Naif; Aslan, Alper; Göksu, İdris

This study aims to examine children’s well-being and life satisfaction in terms of various variables related to parents’ and children’s problematic technology usage. Specifically, parent/child responses during their technology use and parents' phubbing and technoference behaviors were considered. The study was conducted with 185 children (8–14) and their parents (mother = 96, father = 89). The data were analyzed by performing correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, t test, and one-way ANOVA. According to the results, there were negative correlations between children’s life satisfaction and age, children’s technological device (smartphone, computer) usage time, and children/parents responding negatively to each other when engaged in technological devices. Children’s well-being was negatively correlated to their age and children/parents responding negatively to each other when engaged in technological devices. A positive correlation was found between children’s life satisfaction and well-being as well as parents’ phubbing and technoference. According to another result, the well-being of children having their own computer was significantly higher than those who do not have a computer. Finally, children/parents responding negatively to each other when engaged in technological devices negatively predicted the children’s life satisfaction and well-being.
