Mattiastrum pulumurense (Cynoglossinae, Boraginaceae), a new endemic species from Türkiye

Doğru Koca, Aslı; Gökmen, Mustafa; Yilmaz, Gülderen; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz

A new species, Mattiastrum pulumurense, has been described from Tunceli in eastern Türkiye. It is generally distinguished from other species (except M. racemosum var. scabridum) by a sparsely hairy or glabrescent above-ground part. It is most similar morphologically to M. longipes, M. calycinum, and Paracaryum hedgei (P. hedgei is potentially a member of the genus Mattiastrum). However, it differs from M. longipes and M. calycinum by its 3–3.5-mm-long and linear lanceolate scales, 2.5–4.5-mm-long anthers, and 10–15-mm-long styles; it differs from Paracaryum hedgei by its 3–3.5-mm-long scales, 2.5–4.5-mm-long anthers. In addition, this new species differs from M. racemosum var. scabridum by having 3–3.5-mm-long scales and no scale appendages. A description of the new species, an illustration, a comparative Table of morphological characters, detailed photographs, and a distribution map of the new species together with adjacent species were provided. In addition, the evolutionary relationships of these species were calculated using both Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses based on the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) and combined chloroplast data set (rps16 and trnL genes, trnL-trnF intergenic spacer). According to the phylogeny-based combined chloroplast data set, both populations of Mattiastrum pulumurense generate a monophyletic clade and are closely related to M. longipes, P. hedgei, and M. calycinum. According to ITS-based phylogeny, Mattiastrum pulumurense is closely related to Rindera tetraspis, which is seen in the paraphyletic and nested genera Mattiastrum-Paracaryum-Rindera.

Heracleum munzurense (Apiaceae), a new species from East Anatolia, Turkey and taxonomic position of Tetrataenium lasiopetalum

Duran, Ahmet; Lyskov, Dmitry; Samigullin, Tahir; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz

A new species, Heracleum munzurense (Apiaceae), is described from East Anatolia, Turkey. It grows in damp places formation of the Munzur Mountains in the district of Pülümür (Tunceli Province). The taxonomic affinities of the new species were determined by analyzing morphological data and through a molecular phylogenetic study of nrITS/ETS. The new species is morphologically and genetically related to H. apiifolium and H. pastinaca, but differs mainly in stems, leaves, pedicels, rays and petals pubescence, petals size, fruit hairs, and size features. The anatomical structure of the fruit is given. The diagnostic morphological characters of the new species are discussed. In this study, the geographical distribution of the new species and the related taxa H. apiifolium, H. lasiopetalum, and H. pastinaca is mapped. In addition, the habitat, ecology, phenology, and conservation status of the new species are also provided. Tetrataenium lasiopetalum is also closely related to this group of species. Common morphological features and results of molecular phylogenetic study suggest to transfer this species back to the genus Heracleum.

Prangos munzurensis (Apiaceae), a new species from East Anatolia, Turkey

Lyskov, Dmitry; Duran, Ahmet; Paksoy, Mehmet Yavuz; Samigullin, Tahir

A new species, Prangos munzurensis (Apiaceae), is described and illustrated from Tunceli Province, Eastern Turkey. The new species is related to Prangos heyniae, P. abieticola, and P. denticulata and differs from them in the number of rays, length of bracts, indumentum of petals, ultimate segments of leaves, stylopodium features, fruit morphology and anatomy, and distributional range. It also differs from P. ferulacea in presence of furrows between blocks of inner mesocarp, number of umbel rays, and puberulous petals. A comprehensive description of the morphological and carpo-anatomical features, photographs, and data on the geographical distribution, habitat and ecology, and conservation status are also provided. In addition, P. munzurensis is recognized as a separate species by molecular analysis of nrITS/ETS.

Morphological, anatomical and cytological investigations on three taxa of Centaurea L. (Asteraceae) from Turkey

Tasar, Neslihan; Doğan, Gülden; Kiran, Yaşar; Oliur Rahman, M.; Çakilcioğlu, Uğur

Morphological, anatomical and cytological features of three Turkish taxa of Centaurea L., viz. C. polypodiifolia Boiss. var. polypodiifolia, C. urvillei DC. subsp. urvillei and C. urvillei subsp. armata Wagenitz were investigated. Stem anatomy revealed the presence of a thick cuticle layer outside the stem, and epidermis with dense hairs was observed in the lower part. Investigation on leaf anatomy showed that different types of hairs on the outside of the leaf were very intense. Palisade parenchyma was observed below the upper and lower epidermis. In Centaurea polypodiifolia var. polypodiifolia, chromosome number was found to be 2n=16, while in C. urvillei subsp. urvillei and C. urvillei subsp. armata 2n=20. Total karyotype length of C. polypodiifolia var. polypodiifolia, C. urvillei subsp. urvillei and C. urvillei subsp. armata was 22.9 μm, 37.84 μm and 40.01 μm, respectively. Among the investigated taxa the karyotype asymmetry index was found lowest in C. urvillei subsp. armata. Satellite was detected in C. urvillei subsp. urvillei and subsp. armata, while it was absent in C. polypodiifolia Boiss. var. polypodiifolia.

Verbascum duzgunbabadagensis (Scrophulariaceae), a new species from eastern Anatolia, Turkey

Karaveliogullari, Faik Ahmet; Yüce, Ebru; Baser, Birol

Verbascum duzgunbabadagensis (Scrophulariaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species endemic to eastern Anatolia, Turkey. In this study, diagnostic morphological characters of this and closely related species (V. luciliae and V. rupicola) are discussed. Pollen and seed morphology of the new species and of similar taxa are documented. The seeds of this group are brown in color and oblong in V. luciliae and V. rupicola, whereas they are dark brown in color and ovate in shape in V. duzgunbabadagensis. Furthermore, distribution maps for the three taxa are provided.
