Cu-Al-Mn-Fe high-temperature shape memory alloys containing 0-1.0 wt.% La2O3 were fabricated by vacuum arc remelting to investigate oxide-dispersion effects on microstructure, martensitic transformation, wear, and corrosion behavior. XRD and SEM analyses revealed that low La2O3 additions (0.2-0.4 wt.%) promoted β1′ martensite refinement and enhanced crystallinity, while higher contents induced structural heterogeneity. The alloy with 0.4 wt.% La2O3 exhibited the highest transformation enthalpy (7.49 J g−1), reduced friction coefficient (~0.55), and the narrowest wear scar (~501 µm). Electrochemical tests in 3.5 wt.% NaCl showed a fivefold decrease in corrosion current density and increased charge-transfer resistance (2512 Ω cm2) for the same composition. Excessive La2O3 led to performance degradation due to particle agglomeration and interfacial defects. The results demonstrated that controlled La2O3 addition enabled microstructural refinement and multifunctional performance enhancement in Cu-based shape memory alloys.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have recently attracted considerable attention due to their unique combination of high strength, hardness, and corrosion and wear resistance, making them promising candidates for advanced structural and functional applications. Among these, AlCoCrFeNi-based HEAs are well known for their high hardness and good wear resistance; however, their limited tribological stability under operational conditions restricts their broader application. To address this limitation, tungsten (W) was incorporated into the AlCoCrFeNi system to enhance its mechanical and tribological performance. In this study, the microstructural, mechanical, and tribological properties of AlCoCrFeNiWx (x = 0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5 and 1 mol) HEAs were systematically investigated. The alloys were fabricated using the vacuum arc melting method and characterized by XRD, SEM-EDS, elemental mapping, microhardness, and wear tests. The addition of W caused a shift in the 2θ ≈ 44° (110) peak toward lower angles. While the W-free alloy exhibited Body-Centered Cubic (BCC) + B2 phases, W addition led to the formation of a new W-rich phase, and at higher W contents, a pure W phase appeared. The hardness increased from 507.11 HV1 to 651.81 HV1 with increasing W content. Furthermore, wear resistance improved and the coefficient of friction decreased with higher W addition. When comparing the W-free alloy to the alloy with the highest W content, the wear rate decreased by approximately 1.85 times under a 2 N load and 1.89 times under a 5 N load. These results demonstrate that W addition significantly enhances the wear resistance of AlCoCrFeNi-based HEAs by nearly twofold.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ2A Novel CuAlMnFe/CeO2 Composite Alloy: Investigating the Wear and Corrosion Features
Doğan, Fatih; Duru, Erhan
Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are known for their exceptional mechanical properties, particularly their superior wear resistance compared to conventional alloys with similar surface hardness. Rare earth oxides are often used as additives to further improve these characteristics. This study investigates the effects of different CeO2 (cerium dioxide) concentrations (0.01 wt.%, 0.1 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, and 1.0 wt.%) on the properties of CuAlMnFe alloys produced via powder metallurgy (PM). Various analyses were performed, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as hardness, wear, and corrosion tests. The increase in wear rate is closely related to the formation of precipitates from CeO2 addition. Improvements in wear resistance and hardness are attributed to the effects of grain refinement and solid solution strengthening due to CeO2. Specifically, the wear rate increased from 1.5 × 10−3 mm3/(Nm) to 3.4 × 10−3 mm3/(Nm) with higher CeO2 content. Additionally, the friction coefficient of the CuAlMnFe alloy was reduced with CeO2 addition, indicating enhanced frictional properties. The optimal CeO2 concentration of 0.5% was found to improve grain uniformity, resulting in better wear resistance. Incorporating CeO2 particles into CuAlMnFe alloy enhances hardness and reduces wear rate when used in appropriate amounts. Additionally, it exhibits superior corrosion resistance, as evidenced by a positive shift in corrosion potential in Tafel measurements in solutions and a decrease in corrosion current density. The C0.5 specimen showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr, −588 V) and the lowest corrosion current density (icorr, 6.17 μA/cm2) during electrochemical corrosion in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution.

Aslan, Ali Kemal; Bahçe, Erkan
Surface coating processes are carried out to increase the wear and corrosion resistance of products with free-form surfaces used in the biomedical field. In this study, Ti/TiN/TiC/TiCN/TaN multilayer thin films were deposited on the surface of Ti13Nb13Zr alloy samples with different radii of curvature using the closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering technique. The wear and adhesion properties of thin films were examined with a specially developed wear test setup, in a simulated body fluid environment and an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) counterpart was used. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction measurements were used to study the morphology and microstructure of the thin films before and after wear experiments. The delamination amounts of the coatings on the sample surfaces after the wear test were measured and this value was calculated as 8.73%, 12.16%, and 16.89% for the R14, R18, and R22 samples, respectively. As a result of these findings, it was determined that the wear resistance of the coatings decreased as the radius of the curvature increased. The wear amounts of the UHMWPE components are found as 15.45, 6.75, 8.15, 15.45, 6.75, and 8.15 mg for P0, P14, P18, and P22 samples, respectively.

During the machining of aluminum alloys, the adhesion of chips to the tool affects the performance characteristics. Today, different cooling systems are used to eliminate these negativities. In this study, the effects of end milling using HSS and carbide cutting tools of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy on surface roughness, chip thickness ratio and tool wear were examined using different cooling techniques (dry, minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) and nanocutting fluid). Different cutting speeds (180, 200, 220 m/min) and different feed rates (0.05, 0.06, 0.07 mm/rev) were used in the experiments. According to experimental findings, tool wear and surface roughness decreased at low cutting speed and feed rate by using nanocutting fluid with carbide cutting tools. It has been observed that the chip thickness ratio increases with high cutting speeds using nanocutting fluid and decreases with dry machining and high feed rates. The best milling performance of the aluminum alloy was achieved in experiments using carbide cutting tools and nanocutting fluid.

Aslan, Ali Kemal; Bahçe, Erkan
Ti13Nb13Zr alloy stands out as an alternative to Ti6Al4V alloy for orthopaedic joint implant applications due to its low modulus of elasticity, high mechanical properties, high corrosion resistance, high biocompatibility and low modulus of elasticity, as well as con-taining no cytotoxic elements. In this study, Ti13Nb13Zr alloy was coated with TiN/TiC/TiCN/TaN multilayer thin films by pulsed-dc CFBUMS method to increase wear resistance and improve surface properties. Characterization of the deposited films were con-ducted by XRD, SEM, AFM, pin-on-disk, progressive scratch experiments. As a result, it is observed that all the coatings enhanced the tribological properties of the Ti13Nb13Zr alloy surface. The 20-layer TiN/TiC/TiCN/TaN multilayer coatings gave the best results for wear resistance and adhesion properties. Enhancing the interlayer number resulted in increased wear and adhesion resistance. In addition, it was determined that using TiC instead of TiN in the interlayers gave higher results regarding adhesion, wear, and mechanical properties.

Tasgin, Yahya
In this study, the Sn-Sb-Cu alloy known as Babbitt metal and used as the coating material for the screw die surface of the journal bearings of the hydroelectric plants was reinforced with magnesium oxide (MgO), aluminium oxide (Al2O3) and ferrochromium (FeCr2O4) in order to ensure more efficient use of this alloy, formation were examined. The Babbitt prevent contact of the surface of the coating alloy with each other by acting as a separating oil layer having a 150 bar pressure. It is desired that the coating surface both resists against the high pressure applied and some part of the coating surface is asked to prevent from separating the surface of screw die as a result of high speed rotational motion and thus, damaging the shaft. Then, it was aimed to determine the wear resistance of the material as coating and the effects of the added%10 MgO,%10 Al2O3 and%10 FeCr2O4 on wear of material. As a result of the assessments carried out, it was suggested that the wear resistance of the coating would increase when the compound of Al2O3 was added into Babbitt metal. Purpose of the article used as coating material of babbitt metal, being investigated how to exert strong posture affected, under high pressure.
