- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ3Lipid content and wastewater treatment potential of Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus isolated from Uzuncaylr Dam Lake
Can, Şafak Seyhaneyildiz; Can, Erkan; Yilmaz, Kadir
Production of microalgae for biodiesel, one of the alternative renewable energy sources, is costly due to nutrient media. Industrial and domestic wastewater contains nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients that are the primary food source for algae. Releasing this environmentally harmful effluent into receiving bodies of water, such as the sea or a freshwater reservoir, without prior treatment causes serious problems. Combining microalgae cultivation with wastewater treatment is a promising strategy for improving wastewater and reducing the cost of nutrient media required for algae production. In this study, wastewater obtained from a wastewater treatment facility was diluted with clean water to 0.25%, 50%, and 75% concentrations, and Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus were cultured in these nutrient media for 20 days. As a result, microalgae increased their biomass and lipid content, while consuming nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and ammonium from the wastewater as nutrients.

Kahramanoğullari, Merve; Erişir, Mine; Yaman, Mine; Kaya, Şeyma Özer; Ak, Tuba Parlak
Mercury is an industrial toxin with detrimental effects on the reproductive system. This study explored the impact of naringenin (NAR) on testicular toxicity and apoptosis in rats chronically exposed to mercury chloride (MC). The research involved 41 adult male Wistar-Albino rats aged about 2.5 months, which were allocated into 5 groups: group 1 was a control group, group 2 received 100mg/kg of NAR, group 3 was exposed to MC, group 4 received both MC and 50mg/kg of NAR, and group 5 received both MC and 100mg/kg of NAR. For the treatments, the control group took 1mL/kg saline via intraperitoneal (ip) injection and 1mL/kg corn oil via gavage. MC was administered at 0.4mg/kg/day to the MC groups via ip, and NAR was delivered in corn oil at 50 and 100mg/kg/day to the respective NAR groups via gavage. All treatments were performed over a period of 20 days, with MC administration starting 1 hour after NAR administration. The irregularity and loss in spermatogenic cell organization, degeneration and vacuolization in tubules, edema, and congestion in interstitial areas of the testicular tissue of the MC group were alleviated by NAR administration. In addition, the increase in Caspase 3, iNOS, and eNOS immunoreactivities of the MC group were alleviated by NAR administration. In conclusion, it was found that NAR had protective and therapeutic effects against oxidative damage, histopathological changes, apoptosis, and altered spermatological parameters resulting from MC exposure in the testis, and 100mg/kg NAR provided positive effects on altered histopathological analysis, spermatological parameters, and apoptosis.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ1The Effects of Changing the Effective Crest Length of Labyrinth Side Weir on Discharge Capacity
Dogan, Yusuf; Kaya, Nihat
Labyrinth side weirs have significant advantages according to conventional side weirs in terms of discharge capacity. Labyrinth side weirs are especially advantageous in places where more discharge is required from small weir openings lengths. The most significant feature of labyrinth side weirs is their effective crest length, which enables them to discharge more flow. In this study, the situation where the discharge capacity is decreased due to the narrowing of the crest length of the labyrinth side weir for any reason was experimentally investigated in detail. It was also considered that the potential narrowing could be in the upstream weir crest length. The overflow from the remaining length of the crest was enabled by the 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 closure of the upstream crest length of the labyrinth side weir. Therefore, it was attempted to determine the decrease in discharge capacity due to the narrowing in the effective crest length. The values of the discharge coefficient were obtained by using the De Marchi approach. The study was conducted for subcritical flow regimes and steady-state flow conditions. A total of 980 experimental runs were conducted in this study. As the length of upstream effective crest length of the triangular labyrinth side weir at the straight channel decreases, the discharge coefficient also decreases. By narrowing the length of effective upstream crest length in 1/3, 2/3, and 3/3 ratios, the total discharge capacity decreased by approximately 10%, 23%, and 48%, respectively.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ3Performance of artificial neural networks and traditional methods in determining selected growth parameters of Alburnus sellal Heckel, 1843
Ozcan, Ebru Ifakat
In this study, predictions were made on the growth performance of Alburnus sellal Heckel, 1843 from the Munzur River using back propagation artificial neural networks and ANN algorithms. Statistical growth models used in fish biology and results obtained from artificial neural networks were compared. A total of 239 samples were used in this comparison. It was determined that the population is distributed across age groups 0–VII. The relationship between length and weight was calculated as W = 0.0046L3.198 for all individuals. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were calculated for all individuals: Lt = 21.93 [1 – e–0.158 (t + 2.11)]; Wt = 102.29 [1 – e–0.158 (t + 2.11)]3.198. The growth performance index (Ф’) value was 1.880 for all individuals. The condition factor varied between 0.479 and 1.115 for females and between 0.533 and 1.076 for males. The Mean Absolute Percent Error (MAPE) statistic was used, which is a widely used method to measure the accuracy of the predictions made. It was determined that ANNs MAPE (%) values were better than MAPE values calculated for the length–weight relationship and von Bertalanffy growth function models for A. sellal. This study shows that ANNs can be used as an alternative useful method for predicting population parameters. ANN models are therefore an effective tool to describe fish growth parameters. They have been found to be a useful predictive tool. The developed models can be used to predict future sustainable fish management.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ1First-ever fusion of high entropy alloy (HEA) with glass: Enhancing of critical properties of zinc-tellurite glass through TiZrNbHfTaOx incorporation
Güler, Ömer; Kilic, G.; Kavaz, E.; Ilik, E.; Guler, Seval Hale; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.
Many oxide additives have historically been used to enhance the radiation shielding properties of glasses, yet the potential of high-entropy oxides (HEOs), which have gained popularity in material science for their unique properties, has not been explored in this context. This study is the first to investigate the radiation shielding capabilities of Zinc-Tellurite glass infused with High Entropy Oxide (HEO), specifically utilizing the novel attributes of a synthesized TiZrNbHfTa. In this study, the nuclear shielding properties of newly fabricated Zinc-Tellurite glasses doped with TiZrNbHfTaOx with a composition (25ZnO·75TeO2)100-x. (TiZrNbHfTaOx)x (x = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 mol%) were studied. Through the synthesis of a TiZrNbHfTa HEA and its integration into glass structure, we have developed a series of novel materials with enhanced protective properties against both gamma-ray and neutron radiation. Experimental results demonstrate that the HEO-infused glass, particularly the HEC1-4 composition, significantly surpasses traditional shielding materials in neutron attenuation, evidenced by its superior effective neutron removal cross-section. Additionally, the HEC1-4 glass demonstrates improved gamma-ray shielding capabilities, with increased mass attenuation coefficients and decreased half-value layers, indicating a higher capacity for photon interaction and absorption. It can be concluded that the incorporation of High Entropy Alloys into glass matrices not only opens a new frontier in radiation shielding materials but also provides a versatile and effective solution with considerable potential for enhancing safety measures in radiation-prone environments.

“Sulmona Red Garlic” is a well-known Italian traditional product. Bulbs, used for culinary purposes, have been largely investigated for their medicinal properties whereas aerial bulbils are usually removed as waste material. Here, for the first time, chemical composition and biological properties of the hydroalcoholic extract from aerial bulbils were investigated. Complementary information on metabolite composition were obtained using both NMR based untargeted and HPLC-DAD targeted methodologies. The NMR analysis revealed the presence of sugars, organic acids, amino acids, organosulphur compounds (methiin, alliin, allicin and cycloalliin), and other secondary metabolites. In particular, methiin and alliin were identified for the first time in the NMR spectra of aerial bulbil garlic extracts. Polyphenol content was determined by HPLC-DAD analysis: catechin, chlorogenic acid, and gallic acid turned out to be the most abundant phenolics. Hydroalcoholic extract blocked cell proliferation of colon cancer cell line HCT116 with an IC50 of 352.07 µg/mL, while it was non-toxic to myoblast cell line C2C12. In addition, it caused seedling germination reduction of two edible and herbaceous dicotyledon species, namely Cichorium intybus and C. endivia. Moreover, the same extract reduced the gene expression of TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor), HIF1-α (hypoxia-inducible factor), VEGFA (vascular endothelial growth factor), and transient receptor potential (TRP) M8 (TRPM8) indicating the ability to contrast cancer development through the angiogenic pathway. Final, in silico experiments were also carried out supporting the biological effects of organosulphur compounds, particularly alliin, which may directly interact with TRPM8. The results here reported suggest the potential use of garlic aerial bulbils often considered a waste product as a source in phytotherapeutic remedies.

Bioremediation is one of the cheapest and easy method for biological treatment for most kind of industial wastewater. Bioremediation potential of the Phanerochaete chrysosporium for industrial wastewater from Industrial Zone Wastewater plant in Mardin, Turkey, was evaluated. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) reduction efficiencies of P. chrysoporium of on wastewater studied using biomarkers such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Thiobarbituric Acid (TBARS) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in Dreissena polymorpha. The level of TBARS, a marker of lipid peroxidation was found to be high because of wastewater exposure after treatment. TBARS levels decreased (from 20.2 to 31.6 and from 20.8 to 37.5). GSH levels (from 52.3 to 15.9), CAT levels (from, 119.7 to 15.3 and from 91.1 to 13.4) SOD levels (from 3.8 to 0.9 and from 3.4 to 1.2) and GPX activity (from 177.2 to 104.4 and 174.2 to 100.5) decreased in the wastewater exposure groups during 24 and 96th hour compared to the control groups. GSH levels, CAT, SOD and GPX activity increased after treatment by P. chrysosporium. Results indicate that industrial wastewater caused oxidative stress in Dreissena polymorpha. The findings revealed that the highest removal efficiency for COD and TOC, at 86.3 % and 80.3 % respectively, occurred in the 1/20 diluted medium. P. chrysosporium has proven to be effective in the bioremediation of wastewater from the Industrial Zone Changes in biochemical parameters before and after bioremediation showed that antioxidant parameters such as CAT, SOD, GPx activities and GSH and TBARS levels can be used as biomarker to evaluate bioremediation efficiency.

Sahin, E.; Ipcak, H.H.; Orhan, C.; Denli, M.; Erten, F.; Ozercan, I.H.; Balci, T.A.; Sahin, K.
1. Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a skeletal disorder in broilers that has financial implications, necessitating dietary modifications to reduce the prevalence of this disease. This study explored how arginine silicate inositol complex (ASI) supplementation affected tibial growth plate (TGP) and overall bone health in broilers with manganese (Mn) deficiency-induced TD. 2. A total of 240 broiler chicks were divided into four groups, each consisting of 60 birds (15 replicates of four broilers each) as follows: i) Control, with 60 mg Mn per kg of diet; ii) ASI, with 60 mg Mn and 1 g ASI per kg of diet; iii) TD, with 22 mg Mn per kg of diet, and iv) TD+ASI, with 22 mg Mn and 1 g ASI per kg of diet. 3. It was found that ASI supplementation increased tibial bone length in Mn-deficient TD broilers (p = 0.007). There was no Mn x ASI interaction for other bone morphometry variables (p > 0.05). However, both tibial bone mineral content and density were affected by Mn and ASI (p < 0.05). With ASI supplementation, serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin levels were elevated in the TD+ASI group compared to the TD group (p < 0.001). In the TD group, osteoprotegerin (OPG) levels in the TGP decreased compared to the control groups (p < 0.001). 4. In contrast, ASI supplementation in the TD broilers counteracted the decrease in OPG compared to TD broilers without ASI supplementation (p < 0.001). The Mn level and ASI supplementation significantly influenced the OPG/receptor activator of the nuclear factor-κB ligand ratio (p < 0.001). 5. In conclusion, the results demonstrated that inclusion of ASI in broiler diets could enhance bone formation variables by controlling OPG levels in the TGP, potentially serving as an effective method to decrease the occurrence of TD.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2A first-time fusion of TiNbWMoZrOx high entropy oxide (HEO) with zinc-tellurite glass: Toward superior physical properties
Kilic, G.; Güler, Ömer; Kavaz, E.; Ilik, E.; Guler, Seval Hale; ALMisned, Ghada; Tekin, H.O.
While numerous oxide additives have traditionally been employed to enhance the radiation shielding capabilities of glasses, the unique attributes of high-entropy oxides (HEOs), a group of materials acclaimed in contemporary material science for their distinctive properties have remained unexamined in this specific area. This novel study explores the enhancement of radiation shielding properties in zinc-tellurite glasses through the integration of TiNbWMoZrOx High Entropy Oxides (HEO). Utilizing advanced synthesis techniques, including mechanical alloying and oxidation, the research successfully incorporates HEOs into glass matrices, aiming to improve gamma-ray and neutron attenuation. Characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the uniform distribution and structural integrity of the HEOs within the glasses. The synthesis of glass samples with a base structure suitable for the molar composition of 25ZnO.75TeO2 (mol%) and glass samples doped with TiNbWMoZrOx (HEO) was carried out using the traditional high-temperature melting and annealing method. The outcomes demonstrate a concentration-dependent increase in shielding efficacy, particularly highlighting the superior performance of glasses doped with 4 mol% of TiNbWMoZrOx (HEC2–4), which exhibit significantly enhanced mass attenuation coefficients, lower half-value layers, and higher effective atomic numbers. This indicates the effective role of HEOs in boosting radiation protection capabilities. Comparative analysis with traditional shielding materials showcases the HEC2–4 glasses' competitive advantage, underlining their potential as a versatile shielding solution. It can be concluded that incorporating TiNbWMoZrOx high entropy oxides into zinc-tellurite glasses significantly augments their radiation shielding properties, offering a novel approach for enhancing protection against gamma-ray and neutron in various applications.

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset–with data collected between 2020 and 2022 –to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that configural and metric invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional SWLS model has universal applicability. Full scalar invariance was achieved across gender identities and age groups. Based on alignment optimisation methods, partial scalar invariance was achieved across all but three national groups and across all languages represented in the BINS. There were large differences in latent SWLS means across nations and languages, but negligible-to-small differences across gender identities and age groups. Across nations, greater life satisfaction was significantly associated with greater financial security and being in a committed relationship or married. The results of this study suggest that the SWLS largely assesses a common unidimensional construct of life satisfaction irrespective of respondent characteristics (i.e., national group, gender identities, and age group) or survey presentation (i.e., survey language). This has important implications for the assessment of life satisfaction across nations and provides information that will be useful for practitioners aiming to promote subjective well-being internationally. Ayhan, Nagihan Karaaslan; Torgut, Gulben
In this study, chitosan-silver (Chs-Ag) composites containing Ag in different concentrations (0.01–0.08 M) were prepared. The characterization and structure studies of the composites containing 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, and 0.08 M Ag were carried out, and then the dielectric properties of these composites were examined. The composites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dielectric and electrical properties of these composites were investigated depending on the frequency at room temperature, and these properties were determined using an impedance analyzer. Spectroscopy revealed that the dielectric constant (ε′), dielectric loss (ε′′), and real (Z′) and imaginary (Z″) components of impedance are found to decrease with increased frequency for both Chs and Chs-Ag (0.01M–0.08 M) composites. On the contrary, the AC conductivity (σac) of samples increased with increasing frequency. ε′ and ε′′ values of Chs were lower than when the Ag was added. The AC conductivity was improved by the addition of silver particles. The results show that the dielectric and electrical properties of Chs-Ag samples were improved by using Ag as filler.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Scopus SJRQ2The Effect of Using Ferro-Alloy on the Properties of AlCoFeNiMoTi High-Entropy Alloy Produced by Arc-Melting Method: Design of Low Cost
Güler, Seval H.
The cost of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) is one of the most major obstacles to their widespread use. The cost of these alloys with significant amounts of five metals might reach very high levels depending on the type and quantity of metal utilised. Therefore, this study examined the effect of the use of ferro-alloys as part of the charge mixture on the properties of AlCoFeNiMoTi alloy. Ferro-alloys are much less expensive than the pure form of the same metal. To that end, two groups of samples were produced. The AlCoFeNiMoTi alloy was produced using high-purity metals as the metallic charge in the first group of samples. Instead of utilising the pure forms of some expensive metals that make up such alloy, as the metallic charge, lower-cost ferro-alloy forms were employed in the second group of samples. Following the preparation of the appropriate compositions, alloys were produced using the arc-melting method, and the produced alloys were subject to homogenization heat treatment. The obtained samples were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Then, mechanical and corrosion tests were run. The corrosion resistance of the HEAs was compared with an electrochemical polarisation technique in a 3.5% NaCl electrolyte. It was observed that many intermetallics precipitated through the heat treatment of the samples, and the precipitates negatively affected the mechanical properties of the alloy. Also, in the samples in which ferro-alloy was used instead of pure metal, the mechanical properties were substantially degraded. This is believed to be associated with the presence of inclusions and other residues in ferro-alloys. Graphical Abstract: [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

This study aimed to determine the relationship between temperature and neurotoxicity of a new generation insecticide, the active ingredient of which is flubendiamide, on non-target aquatic organisms (Gammarus pulex (L., 1758)). Firstly, LC50 values of flubendiamide on G. pulex were determined at 16, 18 and 20 °C as 256.83 ± 19.59 µgL-1, 169.38 ± 34.17 µgL-1 and 155.84 ± 17.22 µgL-1, respectively. We found that the acute toxicity sensitivity of the test organism to the pesticide containing flubendiamide increased with increasing temperature. Secondly, G. pulex was exposed to non-lethal concentrations of flubendiamide pesticide for 96 hours at the above temperatures. Finally, the changes in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme activity were determined for each temperature using ELISA kits. The exposure time between the 24th and 96th h at the same temperature was found to be statistically insignificant (p>0.05). It was determined that the inhibition value of AChE enzyme activity on the test organism of the pesticide with active ingredient flubendiamide increased depending on the temperature increase. Considering the changes in AChE enzyme activities in G. pulex at different temperatures against flubendiamide insecticide, it was concluded that it can be used as a useful biomarker.

Kaval, Yılmaz
Since the earliest times in history, human beings have had the opportunity to express themselves by synthesizing the world of imagination and reality through folk narratives. Fairy tales hold an important place among these narratives. Besides providing valuable insights into the cultural memory of their originating societies, fairy tales offer a window into the psychological layers of those societies. The actions of fairy tale heroes within the narrative grant us access to their inner worlds, unconscious thoughts, and characteristics, thereby enriching our understanding of them. In this regard, one recurring personality type among fairy tale characters is the narcissistic personality. The narcissistic (self-loving) pattern involves seeing oneself as superior to others, often accompanied by an inflated ego. When examining the tale of Nardaniye Hanım, compiled by Pertev Naili Boratav, from a psychoanalytical perspective, one can observe the representation of narcissistic traits in the stepmother character. In this study, in the context of Psychoanalytic folklore theory and fairy tale genre, I analyzed the narcissistic character of the stepmother character in the fairy tale of Nardaniye Hanım. In the tale, the stepmother, who obsesses over her own appearance, is depicted as dependent on external praise. When her expectations are not met, her magnificent ego gives way to a darker personality, leading her to negatively impact the lives of other characters and commit various evil deeds against them.

The motivation for sustainable urban mobility is driven by the need to create environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, economically viable, and healthier cities for current and future generations. It requires a comprehensive approach that combines infrastructure development, policy changes, behavioral shifts, and technological advancements to transform urban transportation systems. The importance of creating increasingly sustainable urban transportation is now greater than it has ever been. One of the attempts in this field is the sustainable urban transport index (SUTI) developed by the United Nations (UN). Although the SUTI has a comprehensive pool of criteria for the evaluation of mobility sustainability of cities, considering the criteria weights as equal and disregarding the uncertainties present in expert opinions is viewed as a significant drawback. To satisfy the aforementioned deficiency, a novel integrated approach including the best-worst method (BWM), multi-objective optimization by ratio analysis (MOORA) and MOORA plus full multiplicative form (MULTIMOORA) method is develloped and applied for the SUTI evaluation. In order to manage ambiguous linguistic approximations, the utilization of BWM is applied within the framework of interval type-2 fuzzy (IT2F) sets. While IT2F-BWM is used to prioritize the main and sub-indicators of SUTI, MULTIMOORA approach is applied to rank the Asian cities. The findings imply that the proposed approach not only provides a more scientific perspective but also provides the opportunity to perform sensitivity analysis on criteria weights. Therefore, the results obtained in this study are expected to help cities to create a road map for planning sustainable urban mobility (e.g. Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan).
