EVALUATION OF IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES IN THE CONTEXT OF ZERO-WASTE CITY AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY CONCEPT

    Derse, Onur; Polat, Elifcan Göçmen

In recent years, there is a growing interest for waste systems in many countries around the world due to inevitable consequences of major environmental concerns. Urbanization, consumption styles, rapid developments of technologies have increased the consumption inevitably brings about the waste generation, which significantly poses risks to the environment. Although most papers have focused on waste management problems, there is a great gap of evaluation of implementation strategies for the zero-waste city and circular economy concepts. The goal “zero-waste” is strategically achieved with enriched engineering methods including all stakeholders to overcome the challenging waste issues. In this context, this study presents a systematic approach of implementing the policies and strategies focused on the most essential dimensions analysis associated with zero-waste and circular economy based on the PESTEL (political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal). In the study, Best-Worst Method (BWM) is first provided to evaluate a range of zero-waste implementation strategies which are essential for planners and policymakers. In addition, computational results are compared with the Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA), and the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (F-AHP) methods to validate the results, and the results of the methods were found to be consistent. Environmental, economic and technological dimensions were obtained as the most influential strategies. According to the results of BWM and Fuzzy AHP methods, the four most important sub-strategies are S16 (Implementing a closed loop chain), S13 (Promoting sustainability), S5 (Investing in waste management infrastructure) and S12 (Green energy technologies). It is seen that these strategies are mostly environmental. According to the SWARA method, the most important sub-strategies under the economic dimension are S5, S4 (Providing economic incentives), and S6 (Development of green finance initiatives). The findings should also encourage the practitioners and researchers, as the detailed evaluation of strategies in terms of the zero-waste and circular economy provides a database to transform current cities into zero waste cities.

Radiation shielding performance of (SmEuYbLaEr)2TaO4 high-entropy oxide reinforced Cu matrix composites

Taşgın, Yahya; Yılmaz, Demet; Kanca, M. Sait; Kök, Mediha; Yayla, Nihal; Güler, Ömer

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) containing rare earth elements are attracting increasing interest due to their thermal stability and potential for use in radiation shielding applications. In this study, the high-entropy oxide (SmEuYbLaEr)2TaO4 was synthesized via mechanical alloying (MA) followed by calcination and incorporated into a Cu matrix at different reinforcement levels to produce volumetric composites. Structural, thermal, and microstructural analyses confirmed the successful formation of a stable HEO phase and its effective dispersion within the Cu matrix. The radiation shielding performance of the composites was experimentally evaluated over a wide range of photon energies using standard gamma-ray sources. The results showed that shielding performance depends largely on both photon energy and HEO content. Increasing the HEO concentration significantly reduced the half-value layer (HVL) while substantially increasing the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) and radiation protection efficiency (RPE), particularly in the low- and medium-energy regions where the photoelectric effect is dominant. Among the materials studied, the Cu composite containing 20 wt% HEO exhibited the best overall shielding performance. These results demonstrate that (SmEuYbLaEr)2TaO4 is an effective additive for improving the radiation shielding capability of Cu-based composites and highlight its potential for advanced radiation protection applications.

The Positive Effect of Antioxidants in Maintaining the Post-Cryopreserved Sperm Quality of Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792)

Handayani, Luvi S.; Rahayu, Sri R.; Razi, Nanda M.; Pane, Elya P.; Kocabas, Mehmet; Kocabas, Filiz Kutluyer; Hafizuddin, Hafizuddin; Fadli, Nur; Sulistiono, Sulistiono; Muchlisin, Zainal A.

Rainbow trout aquaculture is challenging due to the restricted spawning seasons. Sperm cryopreservation technology can help ensure a successful spawning season, but its effectiveness is restricted by oxidative stress during freezing and thawing, which reduces the availability of male gametes. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of several types and concentrations of antioxidants on post-cryopreservation rainbow trout sperm quality. Subsequently, a factorial completely randomized design with three replications was applied, testing four types of antioxidants Ascorbic acid, Myo-inositol, Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and Alpha-tocopherol at concentrations of 0, 20, 40, and 60 mM, respectively. The evaluation parameters included motility rate, sperm lifespan, and sperm motion characteristics using the Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis system. The results showed that the type and concentration of antioxidants significantly affected sperm motility and sperm lifespan (P<0.05). The treatment method carried out using 40 mM Ascorbic acid and 20 mM BHT led to the highest sperm motility of 46.67% and sperm lifespan of 34 seconds. Although both antioxidants showed similar effectiveness, BHT at a concentration of 20 mM is more recommended due to its lower toxicity and technical as well as economic efficiency considerations.

Modeling stack voltage and remaining useful life of proton exchange membrane fuel cells using deep neural networks

    Dogan, Gurkan; Imak, Andaç

Currently, various energy conversion systems are being developed to reduce environmental impacts. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which stand out with their high efficiency characteristics, have emerged as an important alternative. However, these advantages, along with high costs and uncertainties regarding remaining useful life (RUL) estimation, restrict their further commercialization, especially in the automotive industry. This study presents a forecasting framework using a long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture enhanced with the Bahdanau attention mechanism for predicting RUL and long-term degradation trends. The model thus exhibits a performance that can more effectively capture dependencies in time series and adaptively weight significant time steps. Furthermore, the tree-structured parzen estimator (TPE) was chosen for the appropriate selection of hyperparameters in the developed forecasting framework. The validity, stability, and performance of the proposed model under different operating conditions were examined on the FC1 and FC2 datasets. Experimental studies have shown that the proposed method is the most successful among the best methods, achieving RE metric values of 1.628 × 10−3, 0.003 × 10−1, 99.16 × 10−2, and 0.044 × 10−1 respectively in estimating the best RMSE, MAPE, R2, and RUL.

Quality Enhancement of Rhubarb (Rheum ribes L.) Jam by Ohmic Heating

Özdede, Gizem Merve; Özakdağ, Işılay; Sevim, Esra; Karakavuk, Emrah; Sabancı, Serdal

This study aims to comparatively investigate the production of jam from Rheum ribes L., a plant known for its functional properties, using both conventional and ohmic heating methods, and to evaluate the effects of these methods on quality parameters. Ohmic heating was applied at three different voltage gradients (25, 30, and 35 V/cm) and compared with conventional heating. In both methods, jam samples were produced until they reached a total soluble solids (TSS) content of 66%, after which total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and individual phenolic compounds were analyzed. According to the results, the highest TPC (488.37 mg gallic acid equivalent [GAE]/kg), antioxidant activity (595.6 mg ascorbic acid equivalent [AAE]/kg), and vitamin C content (23.6 ppm) were obtained at 35 V/cm. In contrast, the conventional method yielded significantly lower values for these parameters and a higher HMF content (29.9 ppm). Ohmic heating enabled a much shorter processing time, reducing energy consumption by approximately sixfold and contributing to better retention of nutritional components. Additionally, higher voltage gradients resulted in improved preservation of individual phenolic compounds (such as gallic acid, catechin, and rutin). The findings indicate that, compared to the conventional method, ohmic heating offers higher efficiency, better retention of bioactive compounds, and a more sustainable production approach due to its lower energy requirement.

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Bozali, Nuri; Kocabaş, Filiz Kutluyer; Kara, Cemil; Gürlek, Mustafa Emre

Abstract: Non-indigenous species in an ecosystem increase the potential of novel ecological relationships and can dramatically affect community composition and ecosystem roles. This study examined the spatial distribution of Dreissena caputlacus and Dreissena polymorpha gallandi within the Kelkit Basin located in Northeastern Anatolia. A total of 75 sampling locations representing various habitats were surveyed in the Kelkit Basin. The presence of D. p. gallandi and D. caputlacus was identified for the first time in the basin. The effects of altitude on the population structure, geographic distribution, and shell traits of D. p. gallandi and D. caputlacus were also assessed in a range of ecosystems. The highest shell length (SL) for D. caputlacus was recorded at 566 m altitude with values of 25.58 ± 5.80 mm while the highest SL value for D. p. gallandi was 24.15 ± 5.13 mm at 610 m altitude. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed a strong association among shell length (SL), shell height (SH), shell width (SW), and weight (W). In conclusion, the diverse altitudinal distribution of samples strengthened the evidence that shell features differ with changes in altitude.

The European Charter of Local Authorities and Türkiye in the Internationalization Process

    Atmaca, Yıldız; Boyali, Handan

The European Charter of Local Authorities is an important international document adopted by the Council of Europe in 1985 with the aim of protecting the democratic and independent structure of local authorities and guaranteeing the autonomy of local authorities. This condition enables local governments to make independent decisions within their own areas of authority and responsibility, to encourage public participation in local government processes, and to have control over financial resources. Thus, local governments are no longer an extension of the central government but are becoming a structure that is closer to the public and more accountable. Türkiye, which ratified the European Charter of Local Self-Government in 1991, has tried to implement administrative reforms to strengthen the local government system. Increasing the authority and responsibilities of local governments, improving financial autonomy, and increasing citizen participation have become priority issues in the restructuring of local governments in Türkiye. However, Türkiye's reservations on some articles while accepting the charter show that it has not been able to fully implement the autonomy of local governments. For example, articles 4 and 9 of the charter limit the determination of the duties and authorities of local governments by the central government and support financial autonomy. However, the influence of the central government on local governments in Türkiye is still quite high, and the distribution of financial resources is under the control of the central authority. This is one of the most important factors limiting the autonomy of local governments. In terms of the internationalization process, Türkiye’s adoption of the European Charter of Local Self-Government has been an important step towards the country’s compliance with international democratic norms and standards. This process is also closely related to Türkiye’s European Union membership goals. This process is also closely related to Türkiye’s European Union membership goals. Türkiye aims to accelerate the harmonization process with the European Union through local government reforms and to develop the understanding of local democracy in the international arena. Türkiye’s full compliance with the principles of autonomy and participatory democracy in local governments will enable it to act in accordance with the spirit of the European Charter of Local Self-Government and to move further in the democratization process in the international arena. In this context, this study aims to examine Türkiye's internationalization process within the framework of the European Charter of Local Authorities. The contribution of the Charter to the Turkish local government system was evaluated using the literature review method.

Correction: 2D MHD Mixed Convection in a Zigzag Trapezoidal Thermal Energy Storage System Using NEPCM (Nanomaterials, (2022), 12, 19, (3270), 10.3390/nano12193270)

There were errors in the original publication [1]. In Abstract and Introduction, any reference to “heat transfer (HT) irreversibility,” “fluid friction (FF) irreversibility,” or “Bejan number” is erroneous and should be removed. Any reference to “wave number” should be corrected to “zigzag number,” which is the relevant parameter in the study. The corrected Abstract and the corrected sentence in the last paragraph of the Introduction appear below, respectively. In a magnetic field, two-dimensional (2D) mixed convection is investigated within a zigzagged trapezoidal chamber. The lower side of the trapezoidal chamber is irregular, in particular, a zigzagged wall with different zigzag numbers N. The fluid particles move in the room due to the motion of the upper wall, while the porosity-enthalpy approach represents the melting process. The thermal parameters of the fluid are enhanced by what is called a nano-encapsulated phase change material (NEPCM) consisting of polyurethane as the shell and a nonadecane as the core, while water is used as the base fluid. In order to treat the governing equations, the well-known Galerkin finite element method (GFEM) is applied. In addition, the heat transfer (HT) and the dynamic behavior of flow are treated in terms of average Nusselt number and contours of streamlines. The main results show that the melt band curve of heat capacity behaves almost parabolically at smaller values of Reynolds number (Re) and larger values of Hartmann number (Ha). Moreover, minimizing the zigzag number is better in order to obtain a higher heat transfer rate. In addition, a comparative study of the heat transfer and the dynamic behavior of flow in terms of average Nusselt number and contours of streamlines has been presented. In Section 2.1. Mathematical Modeling and Equations, Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4, the term of porosity must be added to the momentum equations. The Equations (2), (3), (8) and (9) should be updated to the following: (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) In Section 2.1. Mathematical Modeling and Equations, Paragraph 4, Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 9, there is no cylinder inside the cavity, and any reference to a “cylinder” or “diameter D” is incorrect and should be disregarded. The pressure in Equation (6), the Reynolds Number in Equation (11) and the definition for the average Nusselt number at the zigzag wall in Equation (16) should be updated to the following: (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) (Formula presented.) The authors state that the scientific conclusions are unaffected. This correction was approved by the Academic Editor. The original publication has also been updated.

Electrochemically assisted leaching of rare earth carbonates in non-aqueous green solvents: Solvent design, characterization, and process optimization

    Cihangir, Salih

This study presents a systematic approach to the design, characterization, and application of non-aqueous green solvents (NAGSs) for the leaching of rare earth carbonate hydrates (RECHs). Four NAGSs based on choline chloride, ethylene glycol, and various carboxylic acids were synthesized and evaluated for their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Among the evaluated formulations, the choline chloride–ethylene glycol–Na₂EDTA·2H₂O mixture (N1) and the chloride–levulinic acid mixture (N2) were found were found suitable for both traditional and electrochemically assisted leaching due to their optimal viscosity, conductivity, and electrochemical stability. Electrochemical assistance significantly enhanced leaching efficiency, with improvements ranging from 22 % to over 300 % for certain elements compared to conventional methods. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the application of an oxidative potential facilitates the protonation and dissolution of RECHs, likely through the generation of localized acidic environments and the formation of intermediate species. The FTIR analysis confirmed the dissolution of carbonate phases and the formation of rare earth–ligand complexes, particularly in the N1 system, where new bands associated with carboxylate and amine coordination were observed. Importantly, the proposed electrochemically assisted method can be applied to different primary or secondary sources in both aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. The results demonstrate the advantages of combining non-aqueous green solvents with electrochemical assistance as an environmentally benign alternative to conventional acid-based leaching, especially for challenging carbonate forms of rare earth elements. This work provides important guidelines for the development of sustainable hydrometallurgical processes, with future directions including solvent recyclability, selective recovery, and environmental assessment.

Using Decision Tree and K-Means to Improve ANFIS for Predicting Missing Flow Data in Çoruh Basin

    Acar, Ramazan

Complete and continuous flow data provides contributions to the water resources projects appropriate design. However, both financial and technical factors prevent the regular collection of data and such a situation leads to missing data problems. Input variables are from five stations in the Çoruh Basin in the northeast province of Türkiye, and output variables are from one station. In the study, 75% (171 months of data) of the 228 months flow data between the years 1993–2011 are used in the training phase and 25% (57 months of data) in the testing phase. In the ANFIS models, Decision Tree (DT) and K-means (KM) methods are used in selecting the input variables and determining the number of membership functions. In addition, artificial neural network (ANN), multiple linear regression (MLR), and ANFIS models with randomly determined cluster numbers are also used to compare the model performance of these methods. The results show that using DT and KM methods, the ANFIS models generate more reliable results than other models. During the study, the regression coefficient (R2), weighted mean square error (WMSE), and Wilcoxon (Z) values are taken into account for reliability measure. The DT–K-means–ANFIS model achieved the highest accuracy with R2 = 0.98 and WMSE = 5.89 during the testing phase, demonstrating superior performance to the ANN and MLR models. It is shown that the most successful models can be determined in a shorter time by using DT and KM methods before generating ANFIS models.

Nutraceuticals in Uro-Oncology: A Structured Expert Review and Precision-Oriented Framework

Erten, Fusun; Kalemoglu, Ecem; Kucuk, Omer; Sahin, Kazim

Urologic malignancies (UMs), including prostate cancer (PCa), bladder cancer (BCa), renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT), are governed by interconnected molecular pathways that regulate proliferation, angiogenesis, metabolism, invasion, immune escape, and treatment resistance. Key pathways include PI3K/AKT/mTOR, VEGF/VEGFR, EGFR, FGFR, c-MET, androgen receptor signaling, DNA damage response, inflammatory transcriptional programs, and regulation of the tumor microenvironment. This structured expert review evaluates mechanistic, translational, epidemiological, and clinical evidence on food- and botanical-derived nutraceuticals that may influence cancer-related signaling, redox balance, inflammation, metabolic adaptation, and host–tumor interactions. Nutraceuticals are considered investigational adjunctive exposures rather than anticancer treatments or alternatives to standard care. Relevant literature was identified through a structured, non-systematic search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Embase from database inception to 17 June 2026, supplemented by backward and forward citation searches. Eligible evidence comprised preclinical, observational, interventional, pharmacokinetic, formulation, safety, and drug–nutraceutical interaction studies. Evidence was evaluated by cancer type, compound class, molecular context, formulation, exposure, translational maturity, and safety, and was classified into five stages: prevention signal, mechanistic plausibility, bioavailability and exposure feasibility, exposure-linked biomarker activity, and clinical benefit. An exposure–species–compartment framework was used to assess whether parent compounds and relevant metabolites reached systemic, urinary, or target-tissue concentrations compatible with the proposed effects. Findings based solely on supraphysiological concentrations of unconjugated parent compounds were considered hypothesis-generating unless supported by human exposure or tissue-distribution data. Curcumin, green tea catechins, isoflavones, carotenoids, flavonols, stilbenes, and triterpenoids affect several cancer-related pathways, primarily in experimental models. Translation to clinical practice is constrained by inconsistent formulations, limited bioavailability, inadequate target-tissue exposure data, few biomarker-linked studies, and possible interactions with anticancer therapies. PCa and BCa provide the most suitable settings for exposure-verified mechanistic studies. In RCC, safety and treatment interactions should be prioritized, whereas in TGCTs, non-interference with curative cisplatin-based therapy must be demonstrated. Future studies should use chemically defined formulations, verify clinically relevant exposure, incorporate mechanism-matched biological-response endpoints, and confirm compatibility with established treatment. Current evidence does not support nutraceuticals as treatments for urologic malignancies.

Sleep quality in children with epilepsy and their mothers: A cross-sectional study

    Veziroğlu, H.; Kemer, D.

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the sleep quality of children with epilepsy and their mothers, and to identify the factors affecting sleep quality. Methods The sample comprised 103 mothers of children with epilepsy aged 318 years. Data were collected during face-to-face interviews using the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlation analysis. Results According to PSQI, 76.7% of mothers were found to have poor sleep quality. The mean total CSHQ score was 49.99 ± 7.60, indicating clinically significant sleep problems among the children. Mothers' PSQI total scores were significantly associated with income status, number of children, duration of epilepsy, and time spent in digital environments (p < 0.05). Children's CSHQ total scores were significantly associated with age at first seizure, seizure frequency, occurrence of seizures during the last three months, presence of nocturnal seizures, number of antiepileptic drugs used, and ownership of a phone/computer (p < 0.05). Conclusion It was found that children with epilepsy experienced sleep problems related to bedtime resistance and daytime sleepiness, and that their mothers had poor sleep quality. Therefore, the development of supportive intervention programs is recommended to prevent and manage sleep problems in children with epilepsy and their mothers. Implications to practice Multidisciplinary collaboration and nurse-led interventions should be implemented to promote sleep health and improve the quality of life of children with epilepsy and their families.

A Deep Learning Framework for Local Earthquake Magnitude Estimation Using Three-Component Waveforms

    Çelik, Yusuf

This study presents a two-stage deep learning framework for accurate and generalizable estimation of local earthquake magnitudes from three-component seismic waveforms, within the context of ground-based remote sensing systems. In the first stage, phase transition boundaries are identified at the sample level to enable consistent temporal alignment of the signals. In the second stage, earthquake magnitude estimation is performed using 30 s waveform segments aligned with the early portion of the signal and enriched with spectral and statistical features. The model was initially trained on the globally diverse dataset STEAD and later fine-tuned using a subset of KOERI waveforms, and its performance was evaluated on an independent KOERI test set. The results demonstrate high prediction accuracy, with a mean absolute error of approximately 0.09 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of about 0.95, indicating strong agreement between predicted and true magnitudes. The model maintains stable performance across varying signal characteristics and geographic regions, highlighting its strong transferability. These findings suggest that seismic sensor networks can be effectively utilized as remote sensing systems for rapid and reliable earthquake characterization.

Hydrogeochemical controls on chromium speciation and potential human health risks in surface waters of an ultramafic mining watershed

Kutlu, Banu; Baydar, Tarık; Yıldırım, Vesile; Konurhan, Zekeriya

Accurate assessment of chromium contamination in mining-influenced watersheds requires distinguishing between the environmentally contrasting Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species, yet environmental monitoring and risk assessments still rely predominantly on total chromium concentrations. This study evaluated whether chromium speciation provides additional information beyond operational total chromium for assessing chromium occurrence and potential human health risks in an ultramafic, mining-influenced watershed. Surface-water samples were collected from 28 sampling stations across the Pülümür and Ovacık regions of the Eastern Anatolia Basin (Türkiye) between March 2025 and February 2026. Chromium speciation was determined using species-specific UV–Visible spectrophotometric methods and integrated with hydrochemical characterization, multivariate statistical analyses, mineralogical investigations (XRD, SEM–EDS, and FTIR), and deterministic and empirical-bootstrap human health risk assessments. Operational total chromium, defined as the sum of separately measured Cr(III) and Cr(VI), ranged from below the detection limit to 578.13 µg L−1. For contextual screening, this calculated value exceeded World Health Organization (WHO) drinking-water guideline for total chromium at 14 stations; however, it was not an independently measured total-Cr concentration. The highest Cr(VI) concentration occurred at a localized hotspot, whereas Cr(III) predominated throughout most of the watershed. Nevertheless, Cr(VI)-based screening thresholds were exceeded at multiple stations under the assumed untreated drinking-water ingestion scenario, indicating that operational total chromium alone did not consistently identify the spatial distribution of Cr(VI)-related potential risk. Screening-level hazard quotient (HQ) estimates were higher for children than for adults; however, direct untreated consumption of the sampled surface waters was not verified. Mining-influenced stations generally exhibited higher chromium concentrations, although the relative contributions of geogenic weathering and mining-related mobilization could not be quantitatively apportioned. Overall, chromium speciation provided additional environmentally and toxicologically relevant information beyond operational total chromium for evaluating chromium mobility and screening-level potential human health risks in this ultramafic watershed.

Background: Both maximal muscle strength and muscle power are independently important for karatekas. However, the relationship between strength and power in elite male kumite karatekas is under researched. This study aimed to determine the relationship between back-leg-chest (BLC) isometric muscle strength with sprint and jump variables in elite male karatekas. Methods: Male elite/international level (tier 4) kumite karatekas (n = 14; age, 20.79 ± 1.67 year; height, 1.77 ± 0.06 m; weight, 72.21 ± 5.20 kg) were recruited. BLC strength, sprint and jump values were measured with a dynamometer, a photocell, and an application, respectively. Pearson correlation (trivial r < 0.1; small r < 0.3; moderate r < 0.5; large r < 0.7; very large r < 0.9; nearly perfect/perfect r ≥ 0.9) and linear regression analyses were performed to determine the relationship and shared variance between BLC strength, sprint, and jump performance. Results: There were large to very large correlations between BLC strength and sprint time (r = − 0.930, p < 0.01), velocity (r = 0.918; p < 0.01), acceleration (r = 0.913; p < 0.01) and running momentum (r = 0.721; p < 0.01). Additionally, BLC strength correlated with jump height (moderate, r = 0.550, p < 0.05), peak anaerobic power (moderate, r = 0.672, p < 0.01) and power to body mass ratio (moderate, r = 0.545, p < 0.05). BLC strength and sprint variables showed an r2 = 0.52–0.86 (p < 0.01), while BLC strength and jump variables showed an r2 = 0.29–0.45 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: BLC strength is related to jump and sprint performance in male elite karate athletes. This relationship underscores the importance of including strength training that targets BLC muscle strength in training programs for coaches and athletes.

Advanced synthesis and comprehensive characterization of nanoparticle-reinforced epoxy-based biocomposites derived from modified palm oil

Şahal, Hakan; Aydoğmuş, Ercan; Canpolat, Erdal; Kaya, Mehmet

In this research, new biocomposites were synthesized by two-step modification of palm oil (MPO). The raw material (MPOSA) was epoxidized in the first step and obtained by reacting with 4,4-diaminodiphenyl sulfone in the second step. Silicon carbide (SiC), MPOSA, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether, and epoxy resin were used to obtain the biocomposites. After this process, necessary physical tests and chemical analyses were performed. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses were used to characterize the biocomposites. The research included measurements of bulk density, Shore D hardness, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability of the biocomposite. The results indicated that MPOSA reinforcement decreased the bulk density of the biocomposite in proportion to the doping level, and Shore D hardness tests revealed a decrease in hardness with the addition of MPOSA. The increase in MPOSA reinforcement also led to a reduction in the thermal conductivity coefficient. In experimental studies, the optimum reinforcement ratio was determined as 1 wt.% nano-SiC, 10 wt.% glass fiber, and 10 wt.% MPOSA. Excessive MPOSA reinforcement adversely affected the matrix structure and pore distribution of the nanocomposite due to aggregation due to increased intermolecular interaction. Thermal decomposition results showed that MPOSA reinforcement reduced the activation energy of the nanocomposite. This study successfully developed an economical, environmentally friendly, and easily processed biocomposite and contributed to the development of functional and sustainable alternatives.

Investigation of the effect of the metallographic properties of vertical and horizontal cylinders made of ferrochrome with different contents on heat transfer by natural convection

    Kahraman, Gökhan; Taşgın, Yahya

In this study, ferrochrome materials containing elements with different content ratios were manufactured into six-cylinder specimens, 13 mm in diameter and 16 mm in length, and heated in a furnace up to 500 °C. The heated cylinders were removed and left to cool in vertical and horizontal positions in a 16 °C environment. The temperatures were recorded using thermal cameras at certain intervals while the materials cooled down. The six specimens, whose metallographic differences were identified using SEM and XRD analysis devices, were placed vertically and horizontally, and their heat transfer by natural conviction was noted. In the calculations, each specimen’s Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers were identified based on time and then compared. The fastest cooling among the specimens occurred in the ferrochromium material with 55.93% Cr, 31.11% Fe, 11.56% C, 0.48% Si, 0.83% O, and 0.09% Al compound ratios, both in vertical and horizontal positions. Additionally, since the Nusselt number of the horizontal cylinders remained below one based on their position, their natural convection flows were not initiated. The cooling in the horizontal cylinders occurred via conduction.
