    Photosynthetic algorithm approaches for bioinformatics

    Alatas, Bilal

Photosynthetic algorithm (PA) is the newly biosystem-derived heuristic search algorithm that utilizes the dark reaction rules governing the transfer of carbon molecules from one substance into another in the Calvin-Benson cycle and photorespiration. There are only two works using this new algorithm in the literature, one for finite element analysis and one for N-queen problem. This paper presents PA based novel solution techniques in bioinformatics problems such as aligning multiple sequences and discovering association rules within bio-medical data. The simulation results demonstrate the applicability and potential of this algorithm. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: It is known that people's relations with nature can be greatly influential in all periods of their lives and especially in their future, which has increased their interest in concepts such as environment, nature, natural life, ecology, ecosystem as a result of the increase in natural awareness in humans. Aim: Based on these ideas, our research aims to measure the attitudes of cycling athletes in Elazig province towards ecorecreation.. Methods: A total of 178 athletes from 242 cycling athletes, including cycling sports clubs, associations, and individual athletes in Elazig province, participated voluntarily. It consists of 31 substances and 6 sub-dimensions developed by Ayyildiz and the 'Personal Information Form' prepared by the researchers as a data collection tool. Attitude Scale Towards Ecorecreation(ASTE), which was created in a 5-point Likert type format, was used. Spss 22.00 package program was used for the analysis of the data and the level of significance was determined as p<0.05. In the study, t-test analysis was applied to determine the significance of the differences between two groups and ANOVA was applied to determine the significance between more than two groups. Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the direction and severity of the relationship between variables. Results: As a result of the research, there was a semantic difference in the individual and environmental sensitivities of licensed cycling athletes. A significant difference was observed in the Attitudes and Behavior towards Ecorecreation sub-dimensions of the athletes who are interested in another nature sport. Conclusion: The increase in positive behaviors towards nature has clearly become clear that it is directly related to being in nature. Accordingly, researchers believe and draw attention to the fact that in order to increase the positive effect on nature, it is necessary to be intertwined with nature and to adopt it.

BIOACCUMULATION OF COPPER (II) AND CADMIUM (II) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTION BY PSEUDOMONAS PUTIDANRRL B-252

Uslu, Gulsad; Gültekin, Gulden; Tanyol, Mehtap

The bioaccumulation of copper (II) and cadmium (II) ions by viable P. putida was studied as a function of initial pH, temperature, initial glucose and initial metal ion concentration. Optimum pH value for maximum metal ion accumulation was determined to be 3.0 +/- 0.5 and 4.5 +/- 0.5 at 25 and 30 degrees C for each metal ion, respectively. At a constant glucose concentration, although the increase in initial copper (II) and cadmium (II) ion concentration up to approximately 25 mg L-1 increased bioaccumulation capacity of P. putida for both, all metal ion concentrations tested inhibited the growth of P. putida. High microbial growth and copper (II) and cadmium (II) accumulation yields were found at low initial metal ion concentrations. The cell and bioaccumulated metal ion concentrations and uptake yields in-creased with increasing glucose concentration up to 10 g L-1 at a constant metal ion level for each of the metal ions. Although both metal ions caused on inhibition effect on the growth of the microorganism, P. putida was capable of removing copper (II) and cadmium (II) with maximum specific uptake of 58.42 mg g-(1) and 34.65 mg g(-1) at 25 mg L-1 initial copper(II) and cadmium(II) level, respectively. The results also indicated that, P. putida was more efficient in accumulating larger amounts of cadmium (II) than copper (II) ions.

Antimicrobial resistance of emerging foodborne pathogens: Status quo and global trends

    Koluman, Ahmet; Dikici, Abdullah

Emerging foodborne pathogens are challenging subjects of food microbiology with their antibiotic resistance and their impact on public health. Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella spp. and Verotoxigenic Escherichia coli (VTEC) are significant emerging food pathogens, globally. The decrease in supply and increase in demand lead developed countries to produce animal products with a higher efficiency. The massive production has caused the increase of the significant foodborne diseases. The strict control of food starting from farm to fork has been held by different regulations. Official measures have been applied to combat these pathogens. In 2005 EU declared that, an EU-wide ban on the use of antibiotics as growth promoters in animal feed would be applied on 1 January 2006. The ban is the final step in the phasing out of antibiotics used for non-medical purposes. It is a part of the Commission's strategy to tackle the emergence of bacteria and other microbes resistant to antibiotics, due to their overexploitation or misuse. As the awareness raises more countries banned application of antibiotics as growth promoter, but the resistance of the emerging foodborne pathogens do not represent decrease. Currently, the main concern of food safety is counter measures against resistant bugs.

Isoflavonoid production by soy plant callus suspension culture

    Gueven, Alper; Knorr, Dietrich

Production of aglycone type isoflavonoids, Genistein and Daidzein, and p-glycosidic type isoflavonoids, Genistin and Daidzin, by the soy plant callus suspension culture was investigated in a batch system. Genistein and Daidzein concentrations increased during the exponential growth phase of the biomass. Genistin and Daidzin concentrations were not directly related with biomass production. Methyl jasmonate addition to the growth medium (0.1 kg/m(3)) was found to increase isoflavonoid biosynthesis by 5-6 times. Isoflavonoid production in the 7 days old culture increased with pulsed electric field (PEF) application at 1.6 kV, and aglycone forms were influenced to a greater extent. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Does Nepotism Trigger Quiet Quitting? A Research on Local Governments

    Uyan, Umut; Ibin, Adil

The concept of quiet quitting, which denotes a cognitive and/or emotional, if not physical, detachment, has recently become one of the most frequently studied topics in organizational psychology. The term refers to performing only the tasks stipulated in job description with minimum organizational commitment and not going beyond that. Due to the detrimental effect of quiet quitting on both individual and organizational performance, it is crucial to study the phenomenon in depth. By referring to the organizational justice perspective, the study is designed to determine whether one of the negative employee experiences, nepotism, in local governments trigger quiet quitting. The main assumption of the research is that nepotism deteriorates the sense of justice, which leads employees to quit quietly. Structured questionnaires were administered to 259 local government workers in Adana. The results suggest that exposure to nepotism triggers quiet quitting in local governments where preferential treatments are allegedly pervasive. The study is expected to guide managers in establishing effective human resources practices in such institutions.

Yalcin, Beyza Furtana; Yilmaz, Mehmet; Yalçin, Erkut; Altundogan, Hamdi Soner

This study evaluates the effects of using bio-oil obtained from waste biomass on the physical properties, rheology, fatigue, and rutting of recycled asphalt binder. In addition, the aim of this study is to provide benefits to the environment and the economy by reusing waste materials. The bio-oils produced were produced by the pyrolysis method. B70/100 pure bitumen was chosen as the reference binder for the rejuvenation of the selected RAP binder. To ensure its properties, five different rejuvenators (two commercial + three bio-based rejuvenators) were added to the aged bitumen obtained from recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) at different rates. The produced bio-oils were compared with commercial products. The first goal of the study is to produce rejuvenators from waste materials, and the second is to achieve similar or better results with commercial rejuvenators by producing rejuvenators from waste materials. When the test results are examined, it can be seen that the aged binder was rejuvenated to the desired hardness by adding rejuvenator to it. It is seen that the penetration value of the aged binder increased by the addition of rejuvenator, whereas the softening point and viscosity values decreased.

Deep Learning Based Video Event Classification

Gencaslan, Serim; Utku, Anil; Akcayol, M. Ali

In recent years, due to the growth of digital libraries and video databases, automatic detection of activities from videos and obtaining patterns from large datasets have come to the fore. Object detection from images is used as a tool for various applications and is the basis of video classification. Objects in videos are more difficult to identify than in single images, as the information in videos has a time-continuity constraint. Following the developments in the field of computer vision, the use of open source software packages for machine learning and deep learning and the developments in hardware technologies have enabled the development of new approaches. In this study, a deep learning-based classification model has been developed for the classification of sports branches in video. In the model developed using CNN, transfer learning has been applied with VGG-19. Experimental studies on 32827 frames using CNN and VGG-19 models showed that VGG-19 has a more successful classification performance than CNN with an accuracy rate of 83%.

Determination of acute phase proteins aft er experimental Streptococcus iniae infection in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.)

    Güleç, Azime Kucukgul; Cengizler, Ibrahim

Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758) were infected with Streptococcus iniae (Cat No: ATCC 29178) and the plasma changes in the acute phase protein (APP) members were examined at different time periods. A total of 72 fish with average body weights of 60 g were used. Fish in the infected group (group I) were intraperitoneally injected with S. iniae at 3.3 x 10(5) colony forming unit (CFU) in 0.1 mL level to the fish. The other group (group II) was subjected to handling stress near the infection. The control group was constituted by providing optimum conditions. On days 7, 14, and 21, blood samples were taken from the caudal veins of the fish under the appropriate anesthesia. The samples were examined on the basis of APPs, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen (FB), serum amyloid A (SAA), and transferrin (TF) and the changes in the plasma values were recorded. The internal and external symptoms seen during the examinations were detected as follows: the color concentration in 1-2 days in the infected groups, irregularity and retardation in the movements of the fish, hyperemic spots on the skin, and bloody effusion in the internal organs. In both of the infected groups, the CRP and SAA plasma values increased on days 7, 14, and 21 (P < 0.05). Remission was observed in the plasma TF levels in the first week; however, aft er the second week the levels reached normal values. Decreases in the FB levels of all of the samples were detected. Based on the data acquired in this study, it was concluded that changes in the plasma levels of the APP members can be used as a significant bioindicator in the pathogenesis of the disease in fish infections.
