The Nature of the Crustal Structure of the Eastern Anatolian Plateau, Turkey

Yilmaz, Ali; Yilmaz, Huseyin; Kaya, Cemal; Boztug, Durmus

The Eastern Anatolian Plateau (EAP) of Turkey, with an elevation ranging from 1700 to 2000 m, is located between the Eastern Pontide Arc to the north and the Arabian Platform to the south. In this region, pre-Maastrichtian tectonic units representing the crust crop out in only a few localities. As they are covered by Maastrichtian-Quaternary rock units, it is difficult to study the nature and mutual relationships of these pre-Maastrichtian tectonic units. The palaeotectonic units of the EAP comprise two different levels in the present study: (1) The lower level consists of platform-type carbonates and their metamorphic equivalents. These units may represent the Taurus Platform and its metamorphic equivalents. (2) The upper level consists of an ophiolitic-melange prism which is made up mainly of oceanic crust; the prism comprises a complex of ophiolite, ophiolitic melange, and fore-arc deposits. This upper unit represents a subduction-accretion prism and may have originated partly from the North Anatolian Suture to the north, and partly from the South-eastern Anatolian Suture to the south. Continental crustal rocks were thrust over by the ophiolitic melange prism; thus outcrops of them are scarce in the region as they are exposed in tectonic windows through the ophiolitic thrust sheets. The pre-Maastrichtian tectonic units of the EAP are blanketed by Maastrichtian to Quaternary volcanic and sedimentary rock units; these sequences include successive transgressive and regressive intervals and overlie the palaeotectonic units along a pronounced unconformity. Olistostromal units are abundant in the Eocene sedimentary units and were derived from the ophiolites and ophiolitic melange. The Maastrichtian-Quaternary cover is made up of collisional and post-collisional deposits across the whole region. Although the EAP has been experiencing considerable N-S compression, it has not been affected by significant crustal thickening because of the strike-slip tectonic regime that is dominant in the region. Risk Analysis of Ports in Maritime Industry in Turkey using FMEA Based Intuitionistic Fuzzy TOPSIS Approach

Senel, Mine; Senel, Bilgin; Havle, Celal Alpay

Today, international trade is extremely important for countries' economies. It is possible to show the ship's transport as one of the most important execution channels of this trade. International commercial maritime transport subject to many rules and regulations carries many risks in processes such as loading, handling and unloading. Commercial ports are the places where these risks are seen intensely. From this point, many risk components in terms of the process in the port, one of the international commercial port in Turkey, based on a risk analysis is tried to be evaluated in this study. Especially, loading and unloading processes are focused with the directions of industrial experts. The main dimensions of the risks in the port are determined via expert opinions, and the sub-criteria of these dimensions are revealed. In this way, a generic model is proposed based on failure mode and effect analysis and the model is digitized using intuitionistic fuzzy TOPSIS. Interpretations are made in the direction of the obtained analysis results.

Paleoseismology of the Ilipinar Segment (Karliova, Bingol), The North Anatolian Fault Zone

    Sançar, Taylan; Akyüz, H. Serdar

The last century earthquakes produced more than 1000 km surface rupture on the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), which is one of the most active deformation belts in the World. Paleoseismic data from different parts of the NAFZ exposes critical information about the earthquake history of the fault zone. To research paleoseismicity of the Ilipinar Segment and relationship between the segment and last century earthquakes, two paleoseismologic trench studies performed on the Yoncalik basin, where positioned at eastern section of the Ilipinar segment. We identified two paleo-earthquakes, which correspond to BC 8500-6150 and BC 5960-4300 time intervals in the Yoncalik-1 trench. On the other hand the analyses of stratigraphy and structural features of the Yoncalik-2 trench similarly yield two events, from which the older happened before BC 6325 and the younger was between BC 6325-2105. Despite of the wide range of these intervals, both trench results are coincide within their uncertainty limits. We interpret that events in both trenches reflects the same surface ruptures. By the joint analysis of both trenches, we conclude that the most recent and penultimate events should have occurred between BC 5960-4300 and BC 8500-6325, respectively. The results from paleoseismology of the Ilipinar Segment, which constitute the easternmost part of the NAFZ, indicate that the seismic behaviour of the segment is not in accord with the general characteristic of the NAFZ. The reasons behind the disparity are considered to be related with complex fault geometry in the vicinity of Karliova triple junction and partitioning of accumulated strain on these structures.

Effect of semen extender supplementation with cysteine on postthaw sperm quality, DNA damage, and fertilizing ability in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren; Kutluyer, Filiz; Kayim, Murathan

Amino acids have an important biological role for prevention of cell damage during cryopreservation. The objective of this study is to determine the effects of cysteine on postthaw sperm motility, duration of sperm motility, DNA damage, and fertility in the common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Sperm collected from 10 individuals was cryopreserved in extenders containing different cysteine concentrations (2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mM). Semen samples diluted at the ratio of 1:9 by the extenders were subjected to cryopreservation. After dilution, the semen was aspirated into 0.25-mL straws; the straws were placed on the tray, frozen in nitrogen vapor, and plunged into liquid nitrogen. DNA damage was evaluated by comet assay after cryopreservation. Our results indicated that an increase in the concentration of cysteine caused a significant increase in the motility rate and duration of sperm in the common carp (C carpio; P < 0.05). Comparing all concentrations of cysteine, the best concentration of cysteine was 20 mM. Higher postthaw motility (76.00 +/- 1.00%) and fertilization (97.00 +/- 1.73%) rates were obtained with the extender at the concentration of 20 mM. Supplementation of the extender with cysteine was increased the fertilization and hatching rate and decreased DNA damage. Consequently, cysteine affected the motility, fertilization, and DNA damage positively, and extenders could be supplemented with cysteine. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

CRYOPRESERVATION OF GOLDFISH (Carassius auratus) SPERMATOZOA: EFFECTS OF EXTENDER SUPPLEMENTED WITH TAURINE ON SPERM MOTILITY AND DNA DAMAGE

Kutluyer, Filiz; Ögretmen, Fatih; Inanan, Burak Evren

BACKGROUND: Amino acids, present in seminal plasma at high concentration, protect spermatozoa against cell damage during cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: Experiments were designed to analyze the effect of semen extender supplemented with taurine on post-thawed sperm motility and duration, as well as DNA damage. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extenders were supplemented with 1, 2 or 4 mM taurine. Semen samples were diluted at the ratio of 1:9 with the extenders. Diluted samples were aspirated into 0.25 ml French straws and 0.1 ml pellets. DNA damage was assessed with the comet assay after cryopreservation. RESULTS: The percentage and duration of sperm motility were significantly increased by taurine. Additionally, sperm motility and the motility period in pellets were higher than in straws. The best concentration of taurine was 4 mM, and the highest post-thaw motility rate (72.50 +/- 3.54%) and duration (17.50 +/- 0.71 s) were obtained from the extender with 4 mM in pellets. DNA damage was decreased after taurine supplementation. CONCLUSION: Pellets could be used for goldfish sperm cryopreservation. The addition of 4 mM taurine increases the post-thaw motility and decreases DNA damage on goldfish semen.

A modified human reliability analysis for cargo operation in single point mooring (SPM) off-shore units

    Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan

A Single Point Mooring (SPM) unit is a widely recognised off-shore terminal facility in the marine industry since a considerable amount of liquid cargoes can easily be transferred into huge tankers such as VLCCs or ULCCs. Although the system presents high safety standards, any minor accidents due to human error may cause serious harm to the marine environment, human life and the commodity itself. Therefore, nominated crew on-board the tanker and the unit should be very careful during SPM cargo operations. At this point, human reliability plays a critical role in avoiding potential operational or technical failures. In this context, the aim of this paper is to perform a comprehensive human reliability assessment during cargo operations of an SPM unit to enhance maritime safety in off-shore units. The paper prompts a methodological extension of human error assessment and reduction technique (HEART) by incorporating interval type-2 fuzzy sets which overcome more of the uncertainty of experts' judgement and expression in decision-making. The proposed approach not only provides theoretical insight but practical contribution to human reliability assessment in the marine and off-shore industries. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Kutluyer, Filiz; Sirkecioglu, Ahmet Necdet; Aksakal, Ercument; Aksakal, Feyza Icoglu; Tunç, Abdullah; Günaydin, Esra

An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of total (100%) replacement of dietary fish oil with alternative lipid sources in juvenile rainbow trout. Six iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic experimental diets were formulated: CO (14%) -cod liver oil; SSO (14%) -safflower seed oil; SBO (14%) -soybean oil; LO (14%) -linseed oil; SBO (7%) + LO (7%) -a blend of soybean oil and linseed oil; and SSO (7%) + LO (7%) -a blend of safflower seed oil and linseed oil. Growth performance [specific growth rate (SGR), weight gain (WG), food conversion ratio (FCR) and survival rate (SR)], growth hormones [growth hormone (GH-I), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor-II (IGF-II)], immune transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and antioxidant [superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione reductase (GR), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST)] response, and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA levels were determined in muscle and liver. Our data indicated that final weight, weight gain, FCR and SGR showed significant difference among the six dietary treatments (P<0.05) while there were no significant differences in survival rate between the rainbow trout from supplement fed groups and control group. HSP70 mRNA level expression in muscle was higher in fish fed SSO (P<0.05) while highest level in liver was obtained from fish fed SBO compared to the other treatments (P<0.05). There were no significant differences among treatments for TGF-beta mRNA expression level in muscle and liver. In conclusion, growth performance and expression levels of growth hormones, antioxidants, HSP70, except TGF-beta were affected by five separate lipid sources. In addition, LO positively increased growth performance of juvenile rainbow trout by means of preventing oxidative stress and HSP70 and, enhanced expression of growth hormone related gene.

Production Optimisation of a Land-Based Trout Farm and the Reduction of its Environmental Effects

Guner, Yusuf; Kizak, Volkan; Saygi, Hulya; Turan, Gamze; Tekogul, Hatice; Karacalar, Ulviye; Gulec, Fatih; Hekimoglu, Muge

In this study, certain water quality parameters (water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), phosphate (PO4), nitrite (NO2), nitrate (NO3), ammonium (NH4), and (BOD5) in the effluents and the efficiency of the treatment systems for eliminating wastes at a commercial trout farm with a capacity of 10 tons/year in Izmir (Kemalpasa) were examined. The DO, temperature, pH, TIN, PO4, NO2, NO3, and BOD5 measured, were different in the outlet waters when compared with the inlet waters (p<0.05). The settling basin did not reduce the TIN and PO4, on the contrary, it caused an increase in the nitrogen (N) up to 19.9% and phosphorus (P) up to 20.30%, while the wetlands reduced the N, P, and BOD5 up to 53.2%, 58.2%, and 36.5%, respectively (p<0.05). According to the chemical and biological methods, the averages of the TIN and P loads for one tone of cultured trout without treatment were estimated to be were 80 kg and 7 kg, respectively. The annual TIN load of this trout farm was estimated to be 21.3 kg while the TP load was 2.9 kg for one tone of cultured trout when the treatment efficiency was taken into account. The microbiological analyses conducted with the effluent waters showed that the rate of aerobic mesophilic bacteria was found to be high in the summer but low in the winter. It was also detected that the coliform group bacteria were present in the environment in the summer while their occurence was with-in standards in the winter. Interactions of the 9 water quality parameters were identified through the linear regression analysis in order to reduce the environmental effects of the facility DO=28.296 - (0.248 x BOD5)- (2.948 x pH) + (0.189 x temperature) + (0.851 x inlet water) + (0.163 x winter) (R-2=0.912). According to this model, the DO values were increased by the temperature, inlet water and the winter season while reduced by the BOD5 and pH. The dissolved oxygen content in the wetland outlet water was measured as being high because of the nutrient and temperature rises which boosted photosyntesis. It was concluded that using mechanical settling methods were inadequate to minimise the nutrients released into the receiving water body so wetlands should be constructed in such a way as to receive the flow of effluents from the trout farms. As a result the quality of water used by the facility has no adverse impact on the aquaculture and environmental ecosystem.

Investigation of Dielectric Constant and Electrical Conductivity of Poly(MA-co-MMA)/Ce(NO3)3 Composites by Response Surface Methodology for Advanced Dielectric Applications

    Torgut, Gulben; Incesu, Rabia

In this study, poly(maleic anhydride-co-methyl methacrylate) [poly(MA-co-MMA)] copolymer and their Ce(NO3)3-filled composites were synthesized and systematically investigated. The copolymer was prepared via free radical polymerization using azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator in 1,4-dioxane medium. Poly(MA-co-MMA)/Ce(NO3)3 composites were fabricated through a solution mixing technique in accordance with the response surface methodology (RSM) design. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicated that no significant chemical interaction occurred between the polymer molecule and Ce(NO3)3 particles. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed a relatively uniform dispersion of Ce(NO3)3 particles within the polymer, resulting in a rougher surface with increasing filler content and that aggregation occurs at 20 wt%. The presence of Ce(NO3)3 particles in the polymer was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of frequency, applied voltage, and Ce(NO3)3 content on dielectric constant (epsilon) and electrical conductivity (sigma) were optimized using RSM, and the significance of these parameters was evaluated by analysis of variance (ANOVA). An increase in Ce(NO3)3 content significantly enhanced the electrical conductivity, while the applied voltage exhibited no statistically significant effect on dielectric properties. ANOVA results identified Ce(NO3)3 content as the most influential parameter in the developed model.

The new findings on the Late Devonian volcanism in the Eastern Taurides (Develi, Kayseri): Preliminary data

    Çimen, Okay

The Tauride-Anatolide Platfom includes of widespread Paleozoic (Cambrian to Permian) units, which rarely consist magmatic rocks that were identified in two areas: Eastern Taurides (SW of Tufanbeyli and Yahyali) and Central Taurides (Northern Konya). There are problematic views related to the magmatic evolution of these rocks. The available geochemical database is mostly concentrated on the magmatics from the Central Taurides (Konya Region). In this study, the mafic volcanic rocks were recently found in the Eastern Taurides (Develi-Kayseri). These mafic volcanics are intercalated with the Late Devonian limestones and covered by the Early Carboniferous sandstones. The geochemical charateristics of the volcanic rocks exhibit back arc basin (BAB) features with slightly negative Nb anomalies, normal-MORB (NMORB)-like high field strength element (HFSE) patterns and flat REE profile. The newly found basic volcanic rocks in the Eastern Taurides geochemically resemble the meta-diabase dykes in the Konya and Yahyali regions, which were assigned to a subduction related event. The new data reported in this study will benefit to better understand the mid-Paleozoic evolution of the Taurides.

Lavery's Frozen: The Psychosexual History of a Sexual Predator and the Poetics of Anti-Paedophilia

    Ögütcü, Uyesi Murat

Bryony Lavery is an important figure in British feminist drama. She has been noted by critics for her unconventional theatrical methods and themes. Her Frozen (1998) is an anti-paedophiliac play that deals with a psychiatrist who tries to investigate the motives of a paedophile. Investigations into the past of the sexual predator blur the lines between the victim and the victimiser, and the acts of forgiving by the wronged family challenge conventional motifs of revenge. Lavery's use of black and dark comedy further challenges conventional ways of dealing with such serious matters. Therefore, by presenting the psychosexual history of the sexual predator in Bryony Lavery's Frozen, this article will analyse the social and psychological reasons behind sexual abuse in the play, and discuss Lavery's unconventional poetics of anti-paedophilia.

EFFECTS OF HEAVY METAL ON Tetraselmis chuii

    Kutlu, Banu; Dorucu, Mustafa

We determined the toxic effects of seven metals. copper (Cu), manganese (Mn). zinc (Zn), cobalt (Co). molybdate (Mo), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) on the microalgae Tefraselmis chuii (Butcher, 1959). We exposed 50 mL of cultivated microalgae (f/2 Gaillard) in the exponential growth phase. with three replicates, to concentrations of 0 (control). 0.1, 1.0, 5.0, 10, 25. and 50 g L of each metal for 72 hours. The cellular count was recorded daily to evaluate any potential lethal effects. An increase in cellular density was seen in the control treatment. All treatments exposed to metals showed a logarithmic increase in cell density within 48 hours, with a cellular decrease that became evident later on. This study result with an insignificant decrease at low concentrations of Cd, Pb, and Cu at 24 hour was probably attributed to their use as micronutrients at these low concentrations. The most lethal effect was observed with Cd treatment, which killed 50% of the microalgae population at a concentration of 0.62 mu g L-1. In this study, this concentration was three times lower than that of lead and mercury. while being ten times lower than that of cobalt and molybdate. To elucidate the adverse effects on seawater environments, the microalgae Tetraselmis chuii is recommended as a model species.

AESTHETIZED TRAGEDY OR ANGEL WING ILLUSTRATIONS

    Demirkiran, Uyesi Yalcin

The main purpose of this research is shaped by the argument that in social tragic events, the representations of tragedy encountered in the media are aestheticized and transformed into consumer goods. The tragic photograph of a father who did not let go of his daughter's hand under the rubble, which emerged especially after the earthquake disaster in our country, turned into a commodity produced and consumed both in traditional media and social media, determined the direction of the research. In the literature review, similar reflexes were found not only in natural disasters but also in dramatic images created by war and forced migration, which were chosen as samples, and were evaluated within the scope of the research. In the method of the research, the concept of tragedy is discussed through the change of reality as hyperreal in the world that has turned into a simulation universe, with a literature review. Based on Baudrillards' simulation theory, the meaning created by the transformation of tragedy into hyperreal tragedy has been tried to be interpreted. In the section of the study, From Traditional Tragedy to Tragedy in Everyday Language, the historical origin and general lines of the concept of tragedy have been tried to be explained through examples. The similarities and differences between the meaning of the historical origin of the tragedy and the definition of the concept of tragedy used in the everyday language of the modern world are mentioned. In the section of Tragedy as a Simulacrum, the subject is the reproduction of the tragedy with illustrations and pictures by individual users, not only in conventional media, but also in social media. In the research, the tragic images of war, forced migration and earthquake, which cause social tragedies, were examined through selected visual examples of the way artists and social media users were handled. Based on these visual examples, the distortion and abuse of the concept of tragedy has been tried to be explained.

The Predictive Power of Teachers' Proactive Personality Traits on Their Problem Solving Skills

    Sener, Gonul

In this research, it was aimed to determine the level of teachers' proactive personality traits predicting the problem-solving skills consisting of the sub-dimensions of confidence in problem-solving ability, personal control and approach-avoidance. The relational screening model was used in this research which was prepared in accordance with the quantitative research paradigm. Accordingly, the concept of proactive personality was discussed as an independent variable, and problem solving skills were discussed as dependent variables. It is seen that there is a positive and significant relationship between teachers' proactive personality traits and problem solving skills and confidence in problem-solving ability, approach-avoidance and personal control, which are the sub-dimensions of problem solving. Based on the ANOVA values are examined for all three sub-dimensions, it could be said that the value p is significant, in other words, the regression model is valid. According to the t-test results regarding the significance of the regression coefficients, it is seen that proactive personality traits are a significant predictor on the sub-dimensions of confidence in problem solving ability, approach-avoidance and personal control.
