Aydın, Oğuz; Kazez, Muhammed; Say, Yakup; Belhan, Oktay
Objective: Femoral neck fractures (FNF) in young patients are relatively rare but can lead to severe complications if not treated appro-priately. Pauwels type 2 fractures, characterized by moderate inclination, require surgical stabilization. However, no consensus exists regarding the optimal implant that provides superior biomechanical stability. This study aims to compare the biomechanical properties of 3 different fixation systems for the surgical treatment of Pauwels type 2 FNF. Methods: A total of 21 bovine femurs of similar age and size were selected and divided into 3 fixation groups: dynamic hip screw (DHS), cannulated screws (CS), and major plate (MP). Each specimen underwent axial compression testing to assess the maximum load-bearing capacity, shear force resistance, and deformation characteristics of the fixation methods. Results: The results showed that the CS group exhibited the highest shear stress resistance, followed by the DHS group, while the MP group showed significantly lower mechanical strength and elongation (P <.05). Although DHS provided substantial stability, CS demon-strated superior overall mechanical performance. In contrast, the MP system showed significantly lower resistance compared to the other 2 fixation methods. Conclusion: This biomechanical study highlights the importance of implant selection in the management of Pauwels type 2 FNF. Although previous investigations have questioned the adequacy of CS fixation in highly unstable Pauwels type 3 fractures, the results suggest that CS may be a reliable and effective option for the relatively more stable Pauwels type 2 pattern. Because the tests were performed on bovine femur models, which do not fully reflect the structural characteristics of human bone, these findings should be interpreted with caution. Further biomechanical studies using human cadaveric specimens are required to confirm the applicability of these results to clinical practice.

In this study, capacity of naturally growing Lemna gibba L. in removing elements (B, As, Al, Ca, Ba, Co, Fe, Cu, K, Cr, Li, Mo, Ni, Mn, Na, Mg, Sb, P, Si, Pb, Se, Ti, Zn, V, and Sr) from the effluent of secondary clarifier of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP) was determined week by week (W1, W2, W3, and W4) and analyzed as a whole using statistical models. To determine the removal contribution of Lemna gibba L. to the MWWTP effluent, secondary clarifier without Lemna gibba L. was used as a control. The aim here is to determine the contribution of Lemna gibba L. to MWWTP’s removal efficiency. Trace elemental quantification was conducted via validated ICP-MS following microwave-assisted acid digestion. In this context, according to the analysis results, the removal efficiency of Lemna gibba L. for Al was highest at 89.66% over the weeks. Furthermore, treatment efficiencies above 50% were achieved for Co (57.86–60.61%), Sb (64.25–67.35%), and Ti (63.27–66.21%). Based on statistical analyses, PCA (principal component analysis)) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis) models explained 85% of the total variance. As a result, this study demonstrated that Lemna gibba L. removes elements from MWWTP effluent, contributing to the removal efficiency of the secondary clarifier and clearly showing its potential use in phytoremediation.

This study investigates the potential of native plant species (NPs) as secondary sources for strategic/critical raw materials (SCRMs) through phytomining, aiming to identify the most efficient accumulator for sustainable element recovery. To achieve high-precision results, the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm, a robust meta-heuristic optimization technique inspired by the foraging behavior of honeybees, was utilized to minimize the error between experimental data and predicted models to optimize the accumulation of key elements including cobalt (Co), strontium (Sr), antimony (Sb), vanadium (V), phosphorus (P), lanthanum (La), magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti), aluminum (Al), and scandium (Sc). The research focused on three NP species—Musk thistle (MT), curly dock (CD), and Juncus (JS)—collected from a geothermal hot spring area. Methodological validation was performed through comparative statistical analysis and the calculation of bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) to assess phytoremediation efficiency. The ABC optimization results revealed that MT exhibited the most significant accumulation capacity, particularly for Mg, reaching a peak concentration of 3,910 mg/kgdw in the leaves. The concentration range (lowest to highest value) was between 0.01 (for La) and 3,910 mg/kgdw for the studied plants. Principal component analysis (PCA) corroborated these findings, explaining cumulative variances of 80.4% (MT), 89.4% (CD), and 76.4% (JS). The innovation of this study lies in the application of the ABC algorithm to the field of phytomining, which offers a more dynamic and flexible alternative to traditional regression-based models. The primary advantage of this proposed method is its superior global search capability and ability to handle multi-elemental interactions with high predictive accuracy. However, a potential disadvantage remains the computational complexity and the requirement for fine-tuning control parameters to ensure consistent convergence. Overall, MT is identified as a highly promising candidate for the phytomining of SCRMs, with Mg emerging as the most effectively accumulated element under the optimized ABC model.

Sarıçiçek, İzel; Çaydaş, Alparslan Ulaş; Cihangir, Salih; Say, Yakup
In this study, the effects of SiC abrasive ratio, size of magnetic Fe particles and the machining time parameters on the surface roughness, material removal rate, roundness of the holes and corrosion resistance in magnetic abrasive inner surface finishing (MAF) of the AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel pipes were experimentally investigated. A Taguchi L9 orthogonal array was used for the experiments. The surface roughness and the characteristics of the machined surfaces were examined by using the3D surface topography method. The characteristics of the abrasive and magnetic powders before and after machining operations were investigated under scanning electron microscope (SEM) and x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) techniques. The electrochemical corrosion measurements were performed in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solutions in a typical three-electrode electrochemical cell. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was also applied to the study in order to determine the statistical effects of each factor on the measured responses. Consequently, AISI 304 samples machined with MAF technique revealed better results for corrosion performance, surface quality, material removal rate and the hole dimensional tolerances.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Health risk assessment of heavy metal accumulation in fruits exposed to geothermal waters: a case study and global implications
Arslan Topal, E Işıl; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal
BACKGROUND: The present study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals (HMs) in the fruits and leaves of mulberry and sour cherry trees exposed to water from Sivas geothermal basin (Turkey). RESULTS: The target HMs were ranked according to their hazard index as: Cd < Pb < Zn < Cu < Ni < Mn < Cr. The total hazard index for mulberry and sour cherry fruits was calculated as 7.87 and 4.57, respectively, and was determined to be well above the safe threshold value of 1.0. At the same time, the calculated cancer risk values exceeded the established maximum limit (1.0 × 10−4) for Ni (6.4 × 10−3) in mulberry fruit and for Cr (1.15 × 10−3) in sour cherry fruit. Ingestion has been identified as the primary route of exposure. The study results showed that Cr and Ni metals were ranked in the order of mulberry fruit > sour cherry fruit > mulberry leaf > sour cherry leaf, and that for mulberry and sour cherry fruit. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that edible foods exposed to geothermal waters may have adverse effects on human health. Furthermore, the study highlights the necessity of reducing water discharges from geothermal fields and implementing phytoremediation strategies to ensure food safety in geothermally active agricultural basins.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Pollution estimation and health risks assessment related to the agricultural application of mussel shell-derived chitosan as organic amendment
Arslan Topal, E. Işil; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal
In this study, estimation of pollution and assessment of health risks related to the agricultural application of mussel shell–derived chitosan as organic amendment were evaluated. Furthermore, considering WHO maximum permissible levels in soil, the application rates of chitosan to agricultural soils were calculated. Geo-accumulation index (Igeo), enrichment factor (EF), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and ecological risk index (ERI) were calculated. Mussel shell-derived chitosan generally did not contribute to soil metal loading when evaluated in terms of those indices. The highest hazard quotient for ingestion (HQing) across male (ML), female (FML), and children (CL) followed the order Cr > Ni > Mn >Pb >Zn >Cu, while maximum HQing among metals was observed in the order CL > FML > ML. For inhalation exposure, highest HQinh for all metals was also found in the order CL > FML > ML, with individual metal contributions following Mn > Ni > Cr >Zn >Pb >Cu. Maximum HQder exhibited the trend ML > FML > CL, and the metal-specific order for HQder was Cr > Pb > Ni >Zn >Mn >Cu. Hazard Index (HI) and Total HI for ingestion, inhalation and dermal exposure were all less than 1. Cancer risk was less than 1 × 10−6. Consequently, there were no pollution and health risks associated with the use of musselshell‑derived chitosan in agriculture as organic amendment.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Y2O3-Doped BioGlass Coatings for Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Insights into Degradation, Bioactivity, Ion Release, Adhesion, and Corrosion Behavior
Say, Yakup; Aslan, Naim; Cihangir, Salih; Murat, Oğuzkağan; Çaydaş, Ulaş
The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is particularly favored for orthopedic applications. However, important issues such as corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and ion release need to be addressed. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and reduce the ion release of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by applying Y2O3-doped bioglass bioceramic coatings. The coatings were synthesized using the sol-gel method, including pure BioGlass and BioGlass with 1, 5, and 10 wt pct Y2O3. These coatings were then evaluated for their corrosion resistance, adhesion strength, degradation behavior, bioactivity, and ion release. The results showed that all coatings exhibited homogeneous, crack-free, and porous morphologies, which are favorable for osteointegration. The addition of 10 wt pct Y2O3 to the BioGlass coating resulted in a 52 pct increment in adhesion strength, which increased from 13.72 ± 2.80 MPa for single BioGlass coatings to 20.81 ± 2.53 MPa. All samples showed degradation values lower than 1 wt pct. Single BioGlass coatings significantly enhanced the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. However, the addition of Y2O3 negatively impacted BioGlass bioactivity, leading to a noticeable decrease as the Y2O3 content increased. Conversely, the presence of Y2O3 negatively impacted bioactivity and corrosion resistance while increasing the release of Ti ions. Specifically, the release of Ti ions increased from 79.5 ± 0.8 ppb in uncoated samples to 253.7 ± 15.3 ppb in BG-coated samples. For 1, 5, and 10 pct Y2O3-added samples, Ti releases were measured as 192.2 ± 33.6 ppb, 168.5 ± 62.4 ppb, and 194.3 ± 54.4 ppb, respectively. This research highlights the potential of tailored BioGlass coatings to improve the performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in orthopedic implant applications, particularly for enhancing bone integration and reducing implant failure.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Synthesis and characterization of TiNbZrMo medium-entropy bio-composites: Microstructure, mechanical properties, and in vitro degradation
Say, Yakup
This study reports the synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HA)-based bio-composites reinforced with varying amounts (by weight, 1–15 wt.%) of bio-medium entropy alloy (BioMEA) for load-bearing implant applications. BioMEA powders consisting of Ti, Nb, Zr, and Mo were mechanically alloyed for 100 h and subsequently added to HA using powder metallurgy techniques. To show the effect of BioMEA, the microstructure, density, and mechanical tests have been conducted and the synthesized BioMEA was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. In addition, in vitro degradation behavior and bioactivity analyses of bio-composites have been conducted. XRD analysis revealed the formation of BioMEA after 20 h of mechanical alloying. The highest density value of 2.47 g/cm3 was found in 15 wt.% BioMEA-reinforced bio-composite. The addition of BioMEA reinforcement led to a significant increase in hardness and tensile strength values, with the highest values observed at 15 wt.% reinforcement. Compression tests demonstrated a significant increase in compressive strength and deformation capability of the bio-composites with the highest values observed at 15 wt.% BioMEA addition. The highest toughness of 7.68 kJ/m2 was measured in 10 wt.% MEA-reinforced bio-composites. The produced bio-composite materials have an elastic modulus between 3.5–5.5 GPa, which may provide a solution to the stress shielding problems caused by the high elastic modulus of metallic implant materials. The most severe degradation occurred in 15 wt.% MEA-reinforced bio-composites, and the effect of degradation caused a decrease in Ca and an increase in Ti-Ni-Zr-Mo in all bio-composites. These findings suggest that HA/BioMEA bio-composites have the potential to be developed as advanced biomaterials with moderate mechanical and biological properties for load-bearing implant applications.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Characterization and dye adsorption effectiveness of activated carbon synthesized from olive pomace
Deniz, Fatma; Başgöz, Öyküm; Güler, Ömer; Mazmanci, Mehmet Ali
Studies, about products obtained from agricultural wastes, have increased within the scope of zero waste studies. The olive pomace is produced as a result of olive oil production. In the present study, activated carbon was synthesized using the olive pomace taken from the olive pomace processing plant operating with a three-phase process. The synthesized activated carbon characterization was performed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer – Emmett – Teller (BET), and X-Ray Crystallography (XRD) devices. Olive pomace activated carbon (OPAC) was used for the adsorption of dye from an aqueous solution. The adsorption efficiency of the OPAC was investigated. The initial pH value of dye solution (6–9), the amount of activated carbon (0.5 and 1.0 g/L), and initial dye concentration (600–1200 mg/L) were optimized. Also, adsorption kinetic and isotherm calculations were evaluated. The optimum parameters were found as the original pH value (pH=8) of dye solutions, OPAC amount of 1.0 g/L and the initial concentration of 1000 mg/L. The Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model were found as the most suitable models. It can be said that the synthesized material can be used at dye removing from wastewater.

İncele - MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ4Electrochemical Corrosion and Metal Ion Release Protective Efficiency of the Multilayer TaN Coatings on CoCrMo Biomedical Alloy
Aslan, Ali Kemal; Bahçe, Erkan; Güler, Mehmet Sami
CoCrMo alloy is widely used in artificial orthopedic joint applications due to its high mechanical properties. But, high levels of the metal ion release from alloy surfaces cause variable toxic and allergic effects on the patient in vivo use. This case restricts the lifetime of the implant and results in the failure of the artificial joint. In order to enhance the corrosion resistance and to decrease the metal ion release, alloy surface was multilayer-coated by closed field unbalanced magnetron system. The protective efficiency of the coatings was determined by potentiodynamic polarization tests and static immersion tests were performed for 45, 60 and 90 days in the simulated body fluid in order to understand the effect of the coatings on the metal ion release. The metal ion concentrations in the simulated body fluids were determined by using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry device. The electrochemical corrosion results showed that the multilayer coatings provided 93 % protective efficiency in terms of corrosion resistance. Multilayer coatings decreased the metal ions release levels significantly, especially Co leaking was decreased approximately 52 times compared to uncoated samples.
