Karatay, Gülnaz
This study examines the construction of collective mourning and social memory in digital environments following the discovery of university student Ayşe Tokyaz’s body in a suitcase, using a netnographic approach. Femicide is framed as a form of structural violence that produces societal trauma. A total of 414 online comments from Haberler.com were reviewed; 226 met the inclusion criteria, and 205 were analyzed after data cleaning. An integrated qualitative method combining thematic analysis, manual sentiment coding, and discourse analysis was employed. Findings highlight strong demands for justice and capital punishment, alongside distrust in the legal system and calls for retribution. Patriarchal norms appear in victim-blaming and sexist discourse, while demands to reveal the perpetrator’s identity reflect “digital justice.” Collective mourning is expressed through empathy and shared grief, whereas fear signals ongoing trauma. Some users invoke religious references. As a single-case study, findings are context-specific.

Objective: This study was conducted to examine the effect of being diagnosed with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) during pregnancy on postpartum depressive symptoms and infant-mother bonding. Method: This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in a city in southeastern Turkey. Using the purposeful sampling method, 210 postpartum women (106 had COVID during pregnancy, 104 did not) constituted the sample of the study. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews between 15 March and 30 May 2022. Data were collected using the mother introductory information form, mother-infant bonding scale, and Edinburgh postnatal depression scale. The obtained data were analyzed using percentages, means, t-test, chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, and regression analysis. Results: According to the findings of the study, a significant relationship has been observed between contracting COVID-19 and both the birth weight of the baby and the week of birth. Moreover, having COVID-19 negatively affected infant-mother bonding and increased postpartum depressive symptoms. Conclusion: According to the findings of the study: it was observed that the babies of mothers who had COVID-19 had lower birth weight, were born before the full term, mother-baby bonding was lower, and postpartum depression was higher in mothers.

The data obtained was analyzed using the number, percentage, mean, correlation, T test, Anova and Mann Whitney U tests. The UCLA-LS mean score of the mothers was 50.56 ± 11.94, the BHS mean score was 10.78 ± 4.93 and the MSPSS mean score was 40.97 ± 13.86. The results showed a positive correlation between the mean scores of the loneliness and hopelessness scale, and a negative correlation between the mean scores of the loneliness and hopelessness scale and the mean MSPSS score (p <.05). As a result of the research findings, mothers with disabled children experienced loneliness and hopelessness and did not receive sufficient social support.

İncele - Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2020A Study on Historical/Social Traumas and the Forms of Intergenerational Transmission
Karatay, Gülnaz
Historical/social traumas such as war, migration, natural disasters and genocide have multidimensional devastating effects on the survivors. However, subsequent generations also absorb the experiences of their parents in different ways, even if they were not directly exposed to trauma, and their stress-response systems may become vulnerable. This situation, which indicates the contagious nature of social traumas, is expressed in the concepts such as “secondary traumatization” or “intergenerational transmission of trauma”. In the past two decades, there have been an increasing interest in, and modelling studies on the forms of intergenerational transmission of trauma. Scientific studies reveal that, despite some disadvantages of the retrospective method, social/historical traumas continue to affect subsequent generations through psychodynamic, environmental, cultural and epigenetic mechanisms. It is stated that intra-family communication patterns play an important role especially in the processes of trauma transmission and the generation effect may be experienced more heavily in the families who failed to achieve posttraumatic growth. This review article, discussing intergenerational transmission of trauma, aims to create a perspective on the phenomenon by reviewing the literature on the forms of intergenerational transmission of trauma and concordantly, to contribute to a better understanding of the cost of social traumas.
