Cellular responses of spirlin Alburnoides bipunctatus spermatozoa exposed to Bisphenol A: Biochemical response and sperm quality alterations evaluation

Kocabaş, Mehmet; Kutluyer, Filiz; Çakir Sahilli, Yeliz; Aksu, Önder

Plastics are one of the global environmental problems owing to their highest production. Bisphenol A (BPA) is used in the manufacturing of plastics including polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride and resins. In particular, aquatic ecosystems are adversely affected by the occurrence of micropollutants. In addition, BPA as a typical endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) seriously influences androgenic activity and reproduction of aquatic organisms, particularly fish as non-target organism. In toxicological assays, sperm cells can be used as a potential tool for reliable and practical assessment. For these reasons, sperm cells were exposed to lower concentrations (0 µg/L, 0.5 µg/L, 1.25 µg/L, 2.5 µg/L and 5 µg/L) of BPA and the study focused on BPA-induced oxidative stress. The enzymatic [glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)] activities and lipid peroxidation (MDA) were analyzed in spermatozoa. The study findings showed that the activities of SOD and GSH-Px were significantly decreased by BPA but lipid peroxidation (MDA) and CAT acticity increased. Notably, the percentage and duration of motile sperm cells decreased. Collectively, spermatozoa clearly showed the sensitivity even at extremely low concentrations. This is first report to assess the impact of BPA on sperm cells of spirlin Alburnoides bipunctatus.

Risk assessment for clearing and grading process of a natural gas pipeline project: An extended TOPSIS model with Pythagorean fuzzy sets for prioritizing hazards

Oz, Nurdan Ece; Mete, Suleyman; Serin, Faruk; Gul, Muhammet

A natural gas pipeline project is a broad construction system consisting of both offshore and onshore section, which aims to supply the natural gas to one country to another. In such these projects, main focus of the works should cover workplace, environment, health, and safety of workers and employers. To achieve this, a new occupational health and safety (OHS) risk assessment is necessary for reducing the negative effects of emerged risks. In this article, a fuzzy-based risk model is developed for prioritizing primary and residual risk. A two-dimensional (2D) risk matrix method is initially performed and the Pythagorean fuzzy technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (PFTOPSIS) method is then used to prioritize previously identified hazards. For the prioritization of primary and residual risks, hazards are assessed against two parameters (probability and severity) of 2D risk matrix. Unlike previous risk assessment studies, PFTOPSIS is applied for the first time. The fuzzy model is applied to a case study for clearing and grading process of a natural gas pipeline project. A sensitivity analysis is also performed on parameter weights in order to validate the model.

Assessing occupational risks in pipeline construction using FMEA-based AHP-MOORA integrated approach under Pythagorean fuzzy environment

    Mete, Suleyman

The aim of natural gas pipeline projects is generally to make it possible to transfer the natural gas produced from one place to another. There are various safety risks for these broad construction systems. Therefore, to reduce the negative effects of emerged risks, a new risk assessment approach for occupational health and safety (OHS) is needed. In this paper, FMEA-based AHP-MOORA integrated approach under Pythagorean fuzzy sets is proposed for assessing occupational risks in a natural gas pipeline construction project. A case study for concrete coating process of natural gas pipeline project is employed to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed integrated approach. A comparative study, correlation analysis, and sensitivity analysis are also presented to approve the novel risk assessment approach. In conclusion, the integrated approach gives more reasonable results for evaluating the occupational risks in project of pipeline construction using the advantage of Pythagorean fuzzy sets that reflects uncertainty in more suitable way.

Fuzzy rule-based Fine–Kinney risk assessment approach for rail transportation systems

    Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

Rail transportation is one of the most crucial public transportation types for big and crowded cities. In rail transportation systems, stakeholders face serious issues involved in workshops, stations, lines and their environments, and general office buildings. In order to reach an increased awareness and better occupational health and safety (OHS) management, a new risk assessment approach is proposed in this study. This approach includes a combination of Fine–Kinney method and a fuzzy rule-based expert system. It captures nonlinear causal relationships between Fine–Kinney parameters. Since there is a high level of vagueness involved in the OHS risk assessment data, the rule-based expert system is developed for probability (P), exposure (E), and consequence (C) for evaluating risk score. A case study is carried out in a rail transportation system in Istanbul/Turkey, and a comparison with the classical Fine–Kinney method is discussed. Results of the case study reveal risk clusters and corresponding control measures that should be taken into consideration. The study methodologically contributes to risk assessment in the knowledge, while case study in a real rail transportation system offers an insight into public transport industry in safety improvement.

Tatar, Sule; Cikcikoglu Yildirim, Nuran; Serdar, Osman; Yildirim, Numan; Ogedey, Aysenur

The objectives of this research are the assessment of secondary effluents (SEs) quality by evaluating chemical parameters and biomarkers. For this purpose, MDA and GSH levels were determined by spectrofotometer. SOD, CAT, and GPX activities were determined by using ELISA kit in the groups of control and the groups exposed to SE. The level of MDA and the activities of SOD in Gammarus pulex vary depending on the exposure time. GSH levels and GSH-PX activities increased in G. pulex exposed to the effluent compared to the control during 24 h and 96 h. CAT activities were in SE group were found lower than the control in G. pulex during 24 h and 96 h. Current experimental results show that SOD, CAT, GPX activities, and GSH and MDA levels in G. pulex are sensitive and appropriate responses for assess the effects of anthropogenic contaminants on the aquatic ecosystems, particularly effluent complex mixtures.

Dissemination of heavy-metal contamination in surface sediments of the Uzunçayır Dam Lake, Tunceli, Turkey

    Kutlu, Banu

The objective of this study was to determine the heavy-metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn, Fe, As, Cd, Cr, and Hg), evaluate the pollution levels, and determine the concentration of chlorophyll-a and organic carbon in the surface sediments of the Uzunçayır Dam Lake, Tunceli, Turkey, between 2015 and 2016. In order to evaluate the effect of the pollution level in the study area, the contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor, potential ecological risk index, and pollution load index were used. The concentrations of the studied heavy metals were ordered as follows: Fe > Mn > Ni > Cr > Zn > Cu > Pb > As > Cd > Hg. The highest CF value was found for the Ni element among the studied heavy metals in the Dam Lake. Moreover, the highest CF mean value was found for the As contamination level. According to the toxicity analyses in the study area, the potential toxic effect of sediments was not at a very serious level.

The role of human factor in maritime environment risk assessment: A practical application on Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system in ship

    Akyuz, Emre; Celik, Erkan

The role of human factor plays a critical role in the safe and clean operation of maritime industry. Human error prediction can be beneficial to assess risk in maritime industry since shipping activities can pose potential hazards to human life and maritime ecology. The aim of this paper is to propose a risk assessment tool by considering the role of human factor. Hence, the desired safety control level in maritime transportation activities can be ascertained. In the proposed approach, a Success Likelihood Index Method (SLIM) extended with fuzzy logic is used to calculate human error probability (HEP). Severity of consequences are adopted in the proposed approach to assess risk. The quantitative risk assessment approach under fuzzy SLIM methodology will be applied to a very specific case on-board ship: Ballast Water Treatment (BWT) system. In order to improve consistency of research and minimize subjectivity of experts' judgments, the paper adopts the dominance factor which is used to adjust the impact level of experts' judgments in the aggregation stage of the methodology. The paper aims at not only highlighting the importance of human factor in maritime risk assessment but also enhancing safety control level and minimizing potential environmental impacts to marine ecology.

A review of occupational health and safety risk assessment approaches based on multi-criteria decision-making methods and their fuzzy versions

    Gul, Muhammet

Occupational health and safety (OHS) is a multidisciplinary activity working under the tasks of protection of workers and worksites. Risk assessment, as a compulsory process in implementation of OHS, stands out as evaluating the risks arising from the hazards, taking into account the required control measures, and deciding whether or not the risks can be reduced to an acceptable level. The diversity in risk assessment approaches is such that there are many methods for any industry. Multicriteria decision-making (MCDM)-based approaches contribute to risk assessment knowledge with their ability on solving real-world problems with multiple, conflicting, and incommensurate criteria. This article conducts a critical state-of-the-art review of OHS risk assessment studies using MCDM-based approaches. Additionally, it includes fuzzy versions of MCDM approaches applied to OHS risk assessment. A total of 80 papers are classified in eight different application areas. The papers are reviewed by the points of publication trend, published journal, risk parameters/factors, and tools used. This critical review provides an insight for researchers and practitioners on MCDM-based OHS risk assessment approaches in terms of showing current state and potential areas for attempts to be focused in the future.

Occupational health and safety risk assessment in hospitals: A case study using two-stage fuzzy multi-criteria approach

Gul, Muhammet; Ak, M. Fatih; Guneri, Ali Fuat

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is a basis to reduce occupational accidents in an acceptable level, and it covers employee health, safety, and welfare in the workplaces. Hospitals as the largest employer group in healthcare industry in Turkey face major hazards categorized as chemical, biological, physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks. Although Turkey demonstrates rapid economic growth, OHS practices have not been fully put into practice, and necessary attention has not been paid to the health industry. For this reason, this paper aims to assess risks for health staff, contribute for planning of health services, and enhance regulations. A case study was carried out in a leading hospital in Turkey using a two-stage fuzzy multi-criteria approach, which provides more consistency in decision-making process and gives an appropriate final rank of hazard types. Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) is used in weighing five risk parameters, which are severity, occurrence, undetectability, sensitivity to maintenance non-execution, and sensitivity to personal protective equipment (PPE) non-utilization. The fuzzy VIKOR (FVIKOR) approach is then applied for prioritization of hazard types in each department of the hospital. On conclusion of the hazard control hierarchy, measures are overtaken for the hazards, and areas open for improvement are presented.

Assessment of occupational hazards and associated risks in fuzzy environment: A case study of a university chemical laboratory

Ozdemir, Yasal; Gul, Muhammet; Celik, Erkan

University laboratories involve various occupational hazards during the research and course activities, which might affect health and safety of both researchers and students, including chemical, physical, electrical, mechanical, as well as ergonomic and psychosocial risk factors. There are many aspects open to improvements in Occupational Health and Safety management of laboratories, and it is required to deal with risks, reduce them in an acceptable level, and implement control measures. In this study, a risk assessment approach is proposed for the university laboratory operations. The proposed approach incorporates 5S methodology, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), interval type-two fuzzy sets (IT2FSs), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), and the VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR). AHP is injected into IT2FSs in the phase of evaluation and weighting of severity (S), occurrence (O), and detectability (D) parameters of FMEA. By applying IT2FVIKOR, it is aimed at prioritizing the emerged hazards in the chemical laboratory of the observed university. The proposed approach reveals the important hazards and suggests control measures for managing them. The study methodologically contributes to risk assessment in the knowledge, while a case study in a chemical laboratory of a newly established university offers an insight into education industry in safety improvement.
