- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Technology Acceptance in Sustainable Distance Education
Akti Aslan, Seda; Çekmez, Erdem; Ayaz, Ahmet; Özyurt, Özcan; Aslan, Alper
This study aims to examine the thematic structure and temporal evolution of the literature on technology acceptance in distance education using the Structural Topic Modeling method. Peer-reviewed articles indexed in the Scopus database between 2016 and 2025 were included in the analysis, yielding 18 consistent thematic clusters. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) Core Constructs and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)/Partial Least Squares (PLS) Methodology emerged as the most prevalent themes, reflecting the field’s sustained reliance on quantitative model-testing approaches. Trend analyses revealed a pronounced decline in TAM Core Constructs, while Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Extensions, Hybrid and Emergency Remote Teaching, and Mobile and AI Applications demonstrated significant upward trends. The period comparison showed that pandemic-related themes became markedly prominent in the 2021–2025 period. Topic correlation analysis indicated the presence of competing temporal niches within the literature. Taken together, the findings suggest that research on technology acceptance in distance education is undergoing a structural transition from single-framework TAM dominance toward a multi-model, context-sensitive research paradigm. These findings carry important implications for the sustainable development of technology-enhanced distance education ecosystems and offer evidence-based guidance for researchers and policymakers committed to building inclusive and adaptive educational systems.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Generative Artificial Intelligence in Education: Conceptual Dimensions, Trends, and Research Directions
Akti Aslan, Seda; Ayaz, Ahmet; Ozyurt, Ozcan; Aslan, Alper
Research into generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in the field of education has been growing rapidly in recent years. The rapid expansion of the literature has necessitated a systematic examination of the field. In this study, the thematic structure of GenAI research in the field of education during the 2023–2025 period was examined. Given the need to work with a large-scale dataset comprising 15,036 studies, a Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA)-based topic modelling analysis was selected. A search conducted on Scopus resulted in the inclusion of 15,036 studies in the analysis. The LDA analysis identified 12 prominent topics based on consistency scores. Descriptively, these prominent topics were grouped under four broad thematic areas. Among these axes, the technical axis holds the largest share (25%). It was observed that whilst technical topics were on the rise during the 2023–2025 period, topics such as ethics and chatbots showed a relative downward trend. The observed trends suggest that scholarly attention is increasingly directed towards technically oriented research. The findings also indicate a need for theoretical frameworks to ensure pedagogical depth. It is anticipated that the study’s findings will serve as an important reference point for future research. © The Author(s) 2026. Aslan, Alper; Akti Aslan, Seda; Turgut, Yiğit Emrah; Allison, Jordan; Özyurt, Özcan
This editorial presents a structured synthesis of the thematic development of the Journal of Educational Computing Research (JECR) from 1987 to 2024, drawing on a computational analysis of 1,597 articles. Applying Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), the analysis identifies thirteen thematic structures that reveal both the enduring commitments and the emerging orientations of the journal across nearly four decades. Themes such as problem-solving through programming and self-efficacy in programming education have constituted persistent research agendas since the journal’s earliest volumes, while computational thinking and game-based learning have gained substantial momentum since 2015. These patterns suggest that JECR’s intellectual identity is best understood not as a sequence of discrete topical shifts, but as a sustained process in which a bounded set of foundational problems is repeatedly re-articulated under changing technological and epistemic conditions. The editorial situates this trajectory in relation to contemporary developments in artificial intelligence and educational technology, arguing that the journal’s historical archive offers an indispensable conceptual framework for interpreting present-day transformations.

Türel, Yalın Kılıç; Alpsülün, Mustafa; Yuruk, Süleyman Eren; Aslan, Alper; Kokoç, Mehmet; Polat, Hamza; Öztürk Akca, Cemile; Kurşun, Engin
This study developed an exploratory heuristic decision-support framework for dynamically regulating instructor visibility in instructional videos based on learners’ eye-tracking data. Eye-movement data were collected from 40 university students using a Tobii Pro Fusion while viewing 16 explanatory and procedural instructional videos. Instructor and Learning Content Areas of Interest were analyzed using normalized eye-tracking indicators. Descriptive analyses were complemented by Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, binary logistic regression, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses. Learners allocated significantly greater visual attention to learning content than to the instructor across both video types. Logistic regression identified instructor attention percentage, visit-related metrics, and blink frequency as significant predictors of visibility decisions. ROC analysis showed that instructor attention percentage provided the highest discriminative performance, with an optimal threshold of approximately 30%. Findings suggest that instructor visibility may be particularly appropriate during introductory, summary, and conceptually demanding segments, providing empirically grounded, attention-aware guidance for adaptive instructional video interfaces.

This study aims to adapt the Internet Skills Scale, originally developed by Van Deursen et al. in 2016 to the Turkish cultural context and to examine its psychometric properties. The original scale comprises 35 items across five factors. To explore the factor structure in the Turkish context, exploratory factor analysis was conducted with data from 307 internet users. The original 5-factor structure was reduced to four factors due to the analysis. It was determined that all factors explained 68.4% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted with 300 participants to test the suitability of the resulting 4-factor structure for Turkish culture. Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the 4-factor structure, and the fit indices indicated acceptable, good, and excellent model fit. Convergent and discriminant validity analyses were also conducted to assess construct validity, and the results were found to be within acceptable ranges. Based on the findings, the 20-item version of the scale was confirmed to be valid and reliable for use within the Turkish context.

Aslan, Alper; Turgut, Yigit Emrah
This study aims to investigate the use of mobile devices including smartphones and tablets in terms of mediation types of parents who have young children. In this case study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, criterion sampling was adopted for the selection of the study group. The fact that parents of 4–7-year-old children who use mobile devices is determined as the principal criterion. Twelve children aged 4–7 and their parents participated in the study. Data were collected through child observations and parent interviews. The results indicated that children with the mediation of parental supervision had fewer problematic behaviors in the use of media and faced fewer online risks. Besides, children whose parents have general restrictive mediation were the most likely to exhibit problematic media use behaviors. Children whose parents have active mediation were also the most likely to face Internet risks. It was observed that children frequently played games and watched videos on mobile devices. Most parents considered their children’s use of mobile devices as risky and harmful, while it was considered as useful only by co-using parents. It was found that children’s use of mobile devices causes physical, psychological, communicational, and cognitive issues while improving their academic abilities, interests, and cognitive structures. Nevertheless, it was discovered that parents used mobile devices to convince their children to go through their daily routines such as eating, bathing, and sleeping or calm them down in the workplace or social environments.

İncele - Derleme MakaleAçık Erişim2022Sharenting: A Conceptual Analysis
Turgut, Yiğit Emrah; Aslan, Alper; Kopuz, Tuba
The use of the Internet and social media has increasingly become widespread. Social media has become an important part of daily life. Thanks to social media, people can receive and offer services in many fields such as education, entertainment, and trade. Social media which is effective in the daily life of many people from different walk of life has also reflected in parents’ routines. The purpose of the current study is to define the concept of sharenting within the framework of the literature and explain the development process of the concept, express the reasons for the parents’ sharenting behaviour, address the problems created by the sharenting behaviour, and examine the sharenting behaviour within the framework of national and international legal regulations. Sharenting refers to sharing content about children by parents in digital media. The concept of sharenting in English emerges from the combination of the terms “sharing” and “parenting”. Along with studies on the concept of sharenting start- ed in 2012, the first academic study was conducted in 2015. The first study on the concept of sharenting in Turkey was carried out in 2016. “Sharenting” is a new, current, and popular concept in both international and national literature. Although the concept can be translated into Turkish as “paylaşan ebeveynlik”, there is no corresponding translation of the concept in Turk- ish as widely accepted. However, having a Turkish equivalent for the concept can be effective in raising and creating awareness of this behaviour in people. Therefore, one of the ways that many parts of the society, especially parents, can internalize the related concept expressively is to create a Turkish expression for the concept. It can be recommended for language experts and academicians working in the field of language education and teaching to find or create a response to the related concept that society can adopt. Besides, the Turkish Language Association (TDK) can also carry out studies on this subject. Today’s parents who have adopted the use of social media use social media for different purposes such as discussing their parenthood, finding solutions to parenting issues and giving advice to other parents, providing social interaction. Shar- enting is effective in fulfilling some of the needs of parents. In fact, parents can fulfil some of their learning needs with sharing. It also provides parents with social interaction and communication opportunities with other parents. Besides, sharenting is also effective in fulfilling some affective needs such as the acceptance of parental identity and appreciation of parenting practices. Thus, sharenting is an activity which offers opportunities to parents. However, when parents share by using their parental identities, they also include their children. Parents think that there is not any situation in which their children are exposed to harmful effects while sharing. However, every share on social media about children exposes them to some digital risks. Even the disclosure of parents’ identity through children may trigger ethical problems. The ignorance of the possible consequences of the sharenting behaviour on children is the reason for the uncon- scious violation of the privacy of children by the parents. The problem with sharenting is that parents configure their children’s digital identities without their children’s consent. Indeed, children’s digital identities should be created by themselves, not by their parents. The reason is that children are individuals who have the capacity to have rights. Therefore, this situation causes a violation of personal rights. The children’s satisfaction with their parent’s share is also unknown. As a result, it is foreseen that parents will have to encounter some legal processes in the future. Hence, the fact that the defendant-complainant re- lationship will be a parent-child relationship should be known. However, when considering the cultural structure of Turkey, it is predicted that the children’s complaints against their parents will be lower than in Western culture. However, regardless of the situation, national and international legislation and legislative regulations are in favor of the children’s interests. Social media platforms can be sensitive to prevent the parent-child conflicts arising from the sharenting behaviour and as a precau- tion they can provide a kind of warning before sharing. In the content shared, the user can be notified before sharing by using the face and word recognition systems. It is possible that shares in a way that does not risk the children’s safety, personality and existence as an individual are reasonable. However, there is no well-accepted criterion describing the ‘reasonable’ level. Although there is no regulation on what information parents can share about their children in many countries, it is considered that it is not possible to find a global solution. However, non-governmental organizations such as the Family Online Safety Institute can develop a common approach to the relevant situation and can ensure that the reasonable sharenting level is determined. The developed ap- proach can also be used as a government policy regarding the sharenting behaviour. Initiatives to determine the reasonable level can be supported by extensive research such as the European Children Online Project (EU Kids Online) including Turkey and other 24 European countries and Global Kids Online supported by UNICEF.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2021Scopus SJRQ1Teachers' views related the middle school curriculum for distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic
Aslan, Seda Akti; Turgut, Yigit Emrah; Aslan, Alper
This qualitative study aims to examine teachers’ opinions concerning the middle school curricula that have been in use for years, in order to determine its suitability for distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants consisted of eighteen middle school teachers from different subject areas in Turkey. A maximum variation sampling method was employed for participant selection. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Due to the pandemic, the interviews were conducted using video conferencing applications. The data was analyzed through content analysis. According to the findings, the teachers report that while they are effective in achieving cognitive objectives, they have difficulties in achieving affective and psychomotor objectives. In addition, the teachers do not prefer to design their own materials, rather they mainly benefit from ready-to-use materials during emergency distance education. The teachers also reveal that direct instruction and questioning were the teaching methods and techniques they preferred in online courses and that they were unable to adapt other methods and techniques to distance education, which resulted in students experiencing teacher-centered activities. Moreover, the teachers complain about students not attending the online courses on time or even at all, their disinterest, a lack of instant feedback, limited communication with students, and insufficient course lengths. Another critical finding was that the teachers only use homework, end-of-unit quizzes, and participation to online courses as measurement and evaluation tools and agree that they are unable to administer reliable and valid evaluation tools. The limitations of the study and implications for future research are later discussed.
