Evaluation of pull-out and push-out relationship for the flat and ribbed reinforcements in concrete with different compressive strengths

Etli, Serkan; Akgül, Melek; Doğan, Orhan

To evaluate the performance of anchors in strengthening an existing building or to estimate the remaining service life of an existing building due to corrosion in reinforcements within the scope of academic studies, adherence tests, mostly based on pull-out are preferred. However, pull-out tests have a low usability rate and need to be more laborious in accordance with push-out tests. In this study, it is aimed to show the usability of push-out test instead of pull-out test and to reveal an empirical equation to determine the relationship between these two adherence tests on reinforced concrete samples. Within the scope of this study, dozens of bond tests were performed on reinforced 100×100×100 mm cube specimens with different concrete strengths, using flat and ribbed reinforcement types to represent existing structures. Predicted equations for these tests were very usable for estimation of pull-out strength from push-out test results.

A comprehensive case study on structural behavior before and after soil improvement

    Etli, Serkan; Icen, Abdullah

Addressing the issue of inadequate engineering properties in soil is crucial for enhancing structural behavior and reducing damages, especially during seismic events. This study addresses the critical issue of inadequate engineering properties in soil and their impact on structural behavior, particularly during seismic events. Employing a case study methodology, structural responses are assessed before and after soil improvement, emphasizing the problem's significance. Site response analyses for pre-improvement phases reveal design insufficiencies and areas prone to soil liquefaction. The proposed solution is soil reinforcement through cement injection. Examining six cases under various earthquake scenarios and ground conditions, 132 dynamic analyses are conducted, highlighting substantial improvements post-soil improvement, especially in Interstory Drift Ratios (IDR) and roof drift ratios. These findings underscore the effectiveness of soil reinforcement in mitigating seismic damage, emphasizing its critical role in enhancing structural behavior and contributing to a better understanding of addressing soil inadequacies for improved seismic performance.

Effect of White-Portland cement containing micro and nano silica on the mechanical and freeze-thaw properties of self compacting mortars

Etli, Serkan; Yılmaz, Tekin; Hansu, Osman

This study concentrated to investigate the influences of white-Portland cement (W-PC) containing silica fume (SF: micro-silica (µSi) and nano-silica (nSi)) as replacement (2–4 wt%) on mechanical (strength and durability), physical and microstructural behaviors of self-compacting mortars (SCMs) fabricated at 0.48–0.63 w/b ratios. In keeping with these purposes, besides of carrying out the workability (mini-slump flow: M−SF and V-funnel: V-F) experiments of SCMs, the mechanical and microstructural tests implemented were: unconfined compressive strength (UCS), flexural strength (FS), freeze–thaw (F-T) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The outcomes displayed that, in comparison with the control, replacing W-PC by SF (particularly nSi) enhanced the UCS and FS, resisted against F-T durability by lowering the strength losses in UCS and FS. The ameliorated microstructure resulting in a reduction in the number and/or a narrowing in the size of micro-cracks and pores contributed to generate a more compact and consolidated SCM structure for the improving of strength and durability due of pore-filling effect and superior pozzolanic characteristics of µSi and especially nSi, this in turn reduced the permeability of SCM, which has a significant effect on the strength and durability behaviors of the SCM.

Investigation of the variation of mechanical and durability properties of elements manufactured with rubber substituted SCMs with element height

    Akgül, Melek; Etli, Serkan

Controlling the homogeneous distribution of granulated rubber materials added to self-compacting concrete/mortars along the height is of great importance in terms of preserving and defining the holistic behavior of structural elements. In this study, the effect of EPDMGR (ethylene propylene diene monomer granulated rubber) ratio (0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, 20 % and 25 %), test age, L/D (slenderness ratio) and element test zone (bottom, middle and top) on the mechanical properties (flexural and compressive), durability properties (porosity and sorptivity) of the elements produced with SCM were evaluated. The results obtained were statistically evaluated by GLM-ANOVA. It was observed that flexural tensile strength was strengthened up to 5 % substitution rate due to the hydrophobic properties and elasticity properties of EPDMGR used, while porosity values increased with height in the upper regions compared to the lower regions due to the placement properties of SCM. Differences in compressive strength appeared in the upper and lower sections after 5 % EPDMGR substitution. This indicates that for the mixture properties used, the properties examined in terms of mechanical and durability test results may have different properties with limited variability in terms of L/D ratio depending on the EPDMGR ratio used and the region where the element was taken.

    Etli, Serkan; Akgül, Melek

Composite moment resisting frame buildings with 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-story concrete filled steel tube columns and composite beams were modelled. The buildings are designed according to Turkish Code for Design and Construction of Steel Structures-2016 (TCDCSS-2016) and Türkiye Building Earthquake Code-2018 (TBEC-2018) regulations at high ductility levels. The design of the DCH structures was designed in ZC ground for a 0.79 g PGA. While choosing the design location, it is assumed that the construction will be made in a region between the North Anatolian fault line and the East Anatolian fault line, that is, in a region with high earthquake risk. Within the scope of the study, SeismoStruct [1] software was used during the design and performance evaluation of the structures. Nonlinear static push and incremental dynamic analyses were used. Uniform and triangular load distributions were adopted in the PO analysis, and 16 earthquake ground motions were used in the dynamic analysis. The effect of story number on the seismic behavior of CMRFs was investigated using nonlinear analysis results. Accordingly, variation in lateral response, overstrength factors, ductility, and section capacity change of members for CMRF structures were presented. In addition, a mutual evaluation was made with the performance parameters obtained from previous studies with similar geometries.

Performance evaluation of steel-concrete composite structures designed in poorly graded soils

    Etli, Serkan

In this study, the seismic behavior of steel concrete composite buildings in a specific region was investigated. For this purpose, 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-storey composite moment-resisting framed structures were designed. Moment-resist-ing composite framed structures are modeled with concrete-filled steel tube columns and designed and modeled using composite beams. The buildings are designed according to ÇYTHYE-2016 and TBEC-2018 regulations at design levels with high ductility. In the design of the designed structures, the peak ground acceleration value is 0.79 g, and the design ground is planned as ZE class. SeismoStruct software was used for the design and performance evaluation of the structures. During the performance evaluations of the structures, nonlinear static pushover and incremental dynamic analyzes were used. Uniform and triangular load distributions are adopted in the static pushover analysis and 16 earthquake ground mo-tions are used in the incremental dynamic analysis. Evaluation of the effect of the number of stories on the earthquake behavior of composite moment-resisting framed structures was investigated using the non-linear analyzes mentioned. Ac-cordingly, lateral response, overstrength factors, ductility, and dynamic behavior factor values for composite frame struc-tures were calculated and presented using the relevant analysis results. It has been calculated that the behavior factor of all moment-resisting composite framed structures can perform well above the design assumptions, whereas moment-resistant composite framed structures absorb seismic energy by using inelastic deformations. Ductility is almost 30% higher than the design assumption for international standards. As a result, it was concluded that these structures could continue to serve theoretically.

Effect of glass sand used as aggregate on micro-concrete properties; [Učinak recikliranog stakla kao agregata na svojstva mikrobetona]

    Etli, Serkan

Micro-concrete (MC) can be defined as a high-performance cement-based material produced using microaggregates and cement in the required proportions. Owing to its high performance, it has the potential to be used in the structural repairs of existing building elements. Within the scope of this study, an evaluation was conducted by creating a usage scenario under which glass, which is a waste product, can be reduced and applied in a way that provides a sufficient MC performance. There are four different binder contents in the mixtures within the scope of the present study, i.e., 570, 580, 599, and 658 kg/m3. From these mixtures, together with the control mixture, 12 %, 27 %, and 50 % microaggregates were replaced with glass sand and 16 different mixtures with a total of 4 different aggregate contents were produced. For the mechanical, physical, and durability tests, 40 × 40 × 160 mm sized prisms and 50 × 50 × 50 mm sized cubes were produced. For the purposes of this research, mechanical tests were carried out on 144 7-, 28- and 56-day old prismatic specimens. In addition, the effects of a freeze-thaw and temperature on the mechanical properties were investigated on 192 prismatic samples. In determination of the durability, physical properties such as the porosity, sorptivity, and specific gravity were tested and determined using cubic samples. The test results show that the replacement of MA with GS has positive effects on all mechanical behaviours of MC.

Evaluation of the effect of silica fume on the fresh, mechanical and durability properties of self-compacting concrete produced by using waste rubber as fine aggregate

    Etli, Serkan

The supply of sand, which is obtained by disposing of natural resources for the purpose of concrete production and in accordance with production standards, is increasing rapidly and therefore its amount is rapidly depleted. A study is presented that aims to reduce the aggregate content by using this waste tire aggregate (WTA) in the construction industry, and thus, a sustainable production and conservation of nature is the basis. The water/binder ratio used in the study is kept constant as 0.39 and the binder dosage as 550 kg/m3. WTA and SF are replaced with sand and cement at the ratios of 5%, 10% and 15% by volume, and 5% and %15 b y weight, respectively. The fresh (slump flow, V-funnel, and L-box) and hardened (axial compression, splitting tensile strength, flexural tensile strength, diagonal tensile strength, and modulus of elasticity, chlorine penetration and sorptivity) properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) mixtures produced in this way are evaluated. For the mechanical and durability tests, a total of approximately 500 SCC (100 × 100 × 500 mm: prism, 100 × 100 × 100 mm: cube and 100 × 200 mm: cylindrical) samples are produced. The mechanical experiments of SCC were carried out at 28-, 56- and 90-days age. The test results have shown that WTA substitute concrete, which can be used in terms of civil engineering in terms of all these features, has shown that it has sufficient performance.

Effect of Using Eccentric Braces with Different Link Lengths on the Seismic Demand of CFST Column-Composite Beam Frames Subjected to Near-Field and Far-Field Earthquakes

    Etli, Serkan; Güneyisi, Esra Mete

In recent years, in the light of technological developments, the utilization of composite members that enable the use of superior properties of concrete and steel together in earthquake-resistant building design has become widespread. In this study, 5-, 8-, 10-, 13- and 15-story composite moment-resisting framed buildings were designed using composite beams and concrete filled steel tube columns. The effect of using steel braces and the variation of the link length of the eccentric steel braces on the seismic demand of the composite buildings were investigated. For this, eight different cases with braces were considered and compared with the bare structure. The first case had concentric braces (having no link), and the other seven cases had eccentric steel braces with different link lengths classified as short, medium and long. The nonlinear dynamic response of braced and non-braced composite structures was evaluated under the effect of earthquake groups of far-field, near-field with and without pulse effects. Each earthquake group includes ten different ground motion records. SeismoStruct which is a fiber element-based software was used in modeling and analysis of the structures. Seismic behavior of the case studied structures was investigated comparatively through the demand parameters such as the maximum inter-story drift ratios, the maximum roof drift ratios and the deformation states in the structural elements. It was observed that the inclusion of the steel braces provided significant gains in dissipating seismic energy acting through composite buildings and the beam/column deformations decreased considerably, depending on the length of the link and the height of the structure. In some cases, significant damage was monitored in the link members; however, this type of deformation was limited.

Kyb'de kullanılan cam kumun kyb yük-deplasman ilişkisinin davranışı üzerindeki etkisinin araştırılması

    Etli, Serkan

    Etli, Serkan

In this study, the seismic behavior of steel-concrete composite buildings designed using ÇYTHYE 2016 and TBDY 2018 was investigated. For this purpose, composite moment resisting frame buildings with concrete filled steel tube columns and composite beams with 5, 10, 15 and 20 stories are modeled. Buildings are designed at high ductility (DCH) levels. During the design of the DCH class structures, the design was carried out for the ZA soil class for 0.79 g PGA in the region selected from the earthquake map given in the regulations. Within the scope of the study, SeismoStruct software was used during the design and performance evaluation of the structures. Incremental dynamic analyzes were used along with nonlinear static pushover analyses. In the static pushover analysis, uniform and triangular load distributions of the lateral load are adopted. In the dynamic analysis, 16 earthquake ground motions were obtained from AFAD earthquake acceleration databases according to the relevant design area and used. The variation of the seismic behavior of CMRFs depending on the variation of the floor number was investigated using nonlinear analysis results. Accordingly, the variation in lateral response, overstrength factors and ductility factors for CMRF structures are presented comparatively. In addition, the section deformation capacities were investigated during the IDR changes during dynamic and static nonlinear analyses. The behavior factor of all CMRFs, especially the CMRFs studied in the case study, demonstrated above-expected performance according to the design assumptions.

Evaluation of curing time for micro concrete mixes containing silica fume, nano-silica and fly ash

    Etli, Serkan

Within the scope of the study, research on the use of silica fume (SF), nano silica (NS) and fly ash (FA) together or separately in the production of micro concrete is presented. It is aimed to examine the changes in mechanical properties because of water and air curing in mixtures produced using SF, FA, and NS. While cement dosage and water/binder ratio in the mixtures were chosen as 670 kg/m3 and 0.53 respectively, the amount of SF, FA and NS was limited to 150 kg/m3 in total. In the study, samples were produced using 40x40x160 mm prism molds. All samples were divided into two different groups after 7 days of water curing and water (1st group) and air (2nd group) were applied up to 56 days. Flexural and compressive strength tests were performed on the water and air cured specimens for 7-56 days and 28-56 days, respectively. In addition, the porosity and unit volume weight values of the samples were examined. The results show that both flexural and compressive strengths of micro concretes increased after 28 days thanks to water curing.

Analytical Evaluation of Behavior of Composite Columns Under Axial Load

    Etli, Serkan

In the literature, various studies have been carried out for different nonlinear modeling strategies to model the response of such composite column members subjected to dynamic loads. In studies of concrete filled steel tubes elements with software using a finite element method such as ABAQUS, ANSYS and LS-DYNA, which have been used in the literature in recent years, it is seen that steel and concrete components are generally modeled separately with the help of plate, shell, or solid elements. To simulate the interaction between these element models, the help of some other connector or interface elements is needed. Therefore, the biggest disadvantage of using commercial packages is that very complex calculations arise by using much smaller parts of the element to be analytically modeled and the interaction structures to be produced between them. As a result, the necessity of computationally intensive and at the same time long-term work emerges. Within the scope of this study, it is aimed to calculate composite columns faster and more accurately as possible by using fiber section elements and standard material models under axial loading effects. It was observed that the selected parameters had a significant effect on the results obtained

Assessment of Seismic Behavior Factor of Code-Designed Steel–Concrete Composite Buildings

    Etli, Serkan; Güneyisi, Esra Mete

In this study, the seismic behavior factor of steel–concrete composite buildings was examined. For this purpose, 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-story composite moment-resisting frame (CMRF) buildings having concrete-filled steel tube columns and composite beams were designed at medium ductility (DCM) and high ductility (DCH) levels as per the regulations of Eurocode 8. Examined DCM structures were designed for a PGA of 0.2 g while DCH structures were designed for a PGA of 0.4 g. SeismoStruct software was utilized in the design and performance assessment of the case study structures. Nonlinear static pushover and incremental dynamic analyses were used. In the pushover analysis, the uniform and triangular load distributions were adopted while 12 earthquake ground motions were employed in the dynamic analysis. The effect of ductility levels and number of stories on the seismic behavior of CMRFs was studied using the results of the nonlinear analysis. To this, the variation in the lateral response, global yielding value, code-based behavior factor and component, and dynamic behavior factor were presented for CMRF structures with DCM and DCH. It was observed that the behavior factor of all CMRFs exhibited well above the design assumptions, especially DCM class CMRFs.

Effect of pumice powder and artificial lightweight fine aggregate on self-compacting mortar

Etli, Serkan; Cemalgil, Selim; Onat, Onur

An experimental program was conducted to investigate the fresh properties, mechanical properties and durability characteristics of the self-compacting mortars (SCM) produced with pumice powder and Artificial Lightweight Fine Aggregate (aLWFA). aLWFA was produced by using fly ash. A total of 16 different mixtures were designed with a constant water-binder ratio of 0.37, in which natural sands were partially replaced with aLWFA and pumice powder at different volume fractions of 5%, 10% and 15%. The artificial lightweight aggregates used in this study were manufactured through cold bonding pelletisation of 90% of class-F fly ash and 10% of Portland cement in a tilted pan with an ambient temperature and moisture content. Flowability tests were conducted on the fresh mortar mixtures beforehand, to determine the self-compacting characteristics on the basis of EFNARC. To determine the conformity of the fresh mortar characteristics with the standards, mini-slump and mini-V-funnel tests were carried out. Hardened state tests were conducted after 7, 28 and 56 days to determine the flexural strength and axial compressive strength respectively. Durability, sorptivity, permeability and density tests were conducted at the end of 28 days of curing time. The test results showed that the pumice powder replacement improved both the fresh state and the hardened state characteristics of the mortar and the optimum mixture ratio was determined as 15%, considering other studies in the literature. In the aLWFA mixtures used, the mechanical and durability characteristics of the modified compositions were very close to the control mixture. It is concluded in this study that mixtures with pumice powder replacement eliminated the negative effects of the aLWFA in the mortars and made a positive contribution.

The aim of the current experimental study is to investigate the effect of waste textile dye absorbed almond shell on fresh and mechanical characteristics of self-compacting mortar (SCMs). In this context, eight SCMs were designed by substituting Violet Dye Solution adsorbed Almond shell (VDSA) at the rate of 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, 10.0%, 12.5%, 15.0% and 17.5% as a cement on weight basis including the control mix. To measure the rheological properties of SCMs, mini slump and V-Funnel tests were conducted. A total of 72 beams of 40x40x160 mm3 dimension specimens were casted and immersed in water curing at the end of the 7, 28 and 56 days to determine the mechanical parameters. 48 cubes of 50x50x50 mm3 dimensions were casted and kept in the curing tank to determine durability characteristics such as porosity, sorptivity and specific gravity. Quantitative analyses are also performed by using Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM), X-ray Diffraction Analysis (XRD), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR). The experimental results indicated that as the content of VDSA enchases, a remarkable enhancement in flexural strength at early days age and 28 days age strength. Whereas, increasing the content of VDSA resulted in a considerable decrease in compressive strength higher than 5%.

Investigation of Mechanical Properties of Granulated Waste Rubber Aggregates Substituted Self-Compacting Concrete Mortar Produced with Different Cement

Etli, Serkan; Akgül, Melek; Doğan, Orhan

Storage or disposal of waste vehicle tires is difficult, costly and time consuming. Waste tires, which cause the release of pollutant gases to the environment due to its chemical structure in the process of destruction, are considered as an important recycling material in the context of developing and advancing technology and alternative products. Waste vehicle tires are granulated in certain sizes after the disintegration phase and reused in many different fields. With this experimental study, it is aimed to examine the fresh and hardened properties of 12 different self-compacting mortar (SCM)samples of Granulated Vehicle Tire Aggregates, which are substituted with 5 different fine aggregates and prepared with two different cement types. The evaluation of the workability properties of fresh SCM samples prepared in accordance with EFNARC was done with mini slump-flow and mini V-funnel experiments. In order to determine the mechanical properties of the hardened SCM, compressive and flexuralstrength tests were performed on the 3rd, 7th and 28th days of prismatic samples in 40x40x160mm dimensions, and capillary water absorption test is carried out on cubic samples in 50x50x50 mm dimensions on the 28th day. The optimum usability rate of Granulated Vehicle Tire Aggregates in SCM mixtures produced separately with CEM-I 42.5R and CEM-IV 32.5R cement is interpreted through graphs and tables. With this study, it was observed that when the rate of Granulated Vehicle Tire Aggregates was increased in the SCM mixture, the capillary water absorption amount increased, while the compressive and flexural strength decreased.

Numune Boyutunun Kauçukla Modifiye Edilmiş Kendiliğinden Yerleşen Betonun Basınç Dayanımı Üzerindeki Etkileri

    Etli, Serkan; Cemalgil, Selim

Sonuç olarak elde edilen denklemlere ait R2 değerleri 0,95'in üzerinde bulunmuştur.
