High-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF)-sprayed NiCrBSi coatings containing 0, 10, 30, and 50 wt.% WC-Co were evaluated on AZ91D magnesium alloy to determine how the discrete reinforcement level affects surface topography, phase constitution, Vickers microhardness, dry-sliding friction, mass loss, and wear-track microchemistry. As-sprayed surfaces were characterized by three-dimensional profilometry; coating cross-sections and worn surfaces by optical microscopy and SEM/EDS; phase constitution by XRD; and mechanical response by HV0.1 indentation. Dry-sliding tests were performed at 10, 30, and 50 N over 100–1000 m. Increasing WC-Co content raised Sa from 8.8 ± 0.3 to 13.0 ± 0.5 µm and Vickers microhardness from 776 ± 4 to 959 ± 5 HV0.1. XRD indicated a γ-Ni-based matrix containing boride/carbide constituents, while WC, W2C, and Co became increasingly prominent in the reinforced coatings. Boride assignments are based on diffraction evidence, whereas B and C EDS signals were treated semi-quantitatively. The 50 wt.% WC-Co coating exhibited the lowest mass loss and mean coefficient of friction at every load. Its mean friction coefficients were 0.31, 0.35, and 0.41 at 10, 30, and 50 N, corresponding to reductions of 40.1%, 38.9%, and 36.2% relative to AZ91D. At 1000 m, its mass-normalized wear rate indices were 9.0 × 10−4, 4.0 × 10−4, and 5.3 × 10−4 mg N−1 m−1, respectively. Post-wear mapping showed the largest field-scale W-Co-rich fraction in the 50 wt.% coating; however, isolated spectra containing more than 94 wt.% Mg are compatible with local coating penetration/substrate exposure and/or Mg-rich debris. The 50 wt.% composition therefore provided the best combined response among the four tested levels, while intermediate compositions are required to identify a continuous-composition optimum.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Which implant for Pauwels type 2 femoral neck fractures: a biomechanical study

Objective: Femoral neck fractures (FNF) in young patients are relatively rare but can lead to severe complications if not treated appro-priately. Pauwels type 2 fractures, characterized by moderate inclination, require surgical stabilization. However, no consensus exists regarding the optimal implant that provides superior biomechanical stability. This study aims to compare the biomechanical properties of 3 different fixation systems for the surgical treatment of Pauwels type 2 FNF. Methods: A total of 21 bovine femurs of similar age and size were selected and divided into 3 fixation groups: dynamic hip screw (DHS), cannulated screws (CS), and major plate (MP). Each specimen underwent axial compression testing to assess the maximum load-bearing capacity, shear force resistance, and deformation characteristics of the fixation methods. Results: The results showed that the CS group exhibited the highest shear stress resistance, followed by the DHS group, while the MP group showed significantly lower mechanical strength and elongation (P <.05). Although DHS provided substantial stability, CS demon-strated superior overall mechanical performance. In contrast, the MP system showed significantly lower resistance compared to the other 2 fixation methods. Conclusion: This biomechanical study highlights the importance of implant selection in the management of Pauwels type 2 FNF. Although previous investigations have questioned the adequacy of CS fixation in highly unstable Pauwels type 3 fractures, the results suggest that CS may be a reliable and effective option for the relatively more stable Pauwels type 2 pattern. Because the tests were performed on bovine femur models, which do not fully reflect the structural characteristics of human bone, these findings should be interpreted with caution. Further biomechanical studies using human cadaveric specimens are required to confirm the applicability of these results to clinical practice.

In this study, the effects of SiC abrasive ratio, size of magnetic Fe particles and the machining time parameters on the surface roughness, material removal rate, roundness of the holes and corrosion resistance in magnetic abrasive inner surface finishing (MAF) of the AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel pipes were experimentally investigated. A Taguchi L9 orthogonal array was used for the experiments. The surface roughness and the characteristics of the machined surfaces were examined by using the3D surface topography method. The characteristics of the abrasive and magnetic powders before and after machining operations were investigated under scanning electron microscope (SEM) and x-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) techniques. The electrochemical corrosion measurements were performed in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solutions in a typical three-electrode electrochemical cell. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was also applied to the study in order to determine the statistical effects of each factor on the measured responses. Consequently, AISI 304 samples machined with MAF technique revealed better results for corrosion performance, surface quality, material removal rate and the hole dimensional tolerances.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Investigation of the Bioactivity Properties of TiZrCrNb0.3Ta0.07 Medium Entropy Alloy Produced from TNTZ Waste
Say, Yakup; Yayla, Nihal; Güler, Ömer; Güzel, Harun
High entropy alloys (HEAs) and medium entropy alloys (MEAs) have garnered significant attention as alternative materials in various fields due to their superior physical and chemical properties compared to conventional alloys. One of the most promising applications of this innovative material class is in biomaterials. In this study, a bio-medium entropy alloy (BioMEA), TiZrCrNb0.25Ta0.05, was successfully synthesized using non-toxic elements (Ti, Zr, Cr, Nb and Ta) through arc melting of TNTZ alloy waste. The produced BioMEA was comprehensively characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) to analyze its structural and chemical properties. Additionally, the in-vitro degradation, ion release, and bioactivity properties of the alloy were evaluated and compared with those of the conventional TNTZ alloy, with a focus on the effects of heat treatment. The results demonstrated that heat treatment did not cause significant changes in the microstructure of the TiZrCrNb0.25Ta0.05 alloy but led to the formation of intermetallic compounds such as Cr2Zr and Cr2Ta on the surface. Degradation tests revealed an unexpected mass gain across all sample groups after a four-week immersion period due to surface precipitation, surpassing the expected mass loss from degradation. Ion release analyses showed similar behavior between the TiZrCrNb0.25Ta0.05 and TNTZ alloys, with ion release levels in the ppb range, confirming that Ti was released at non-toxic levels. Bioactivity tests identified low lesvels of Ca-P-O deposition on all sample surfaces, with the highest bioactivity observed in the heat-treated TiZrCrNb0.25Ta0.05 sample. Overall, the findings suggest that the TiZrCrNb0.25Ta0.05 alloy has the potential to serve as an alternative biomaterial to the TNTZ alloy, with its bioactivity properties being further enhanced through heat treatment. Further studies are recommended to optimize its bioactivity and evaluate its in-vivo performance for biomedical applications.
- MakaleAçık Erişim2025Scopus SJRQ1Y2O3-Doped BioGlass Coatings for Ti-6Al-4V Alloy: Insights into Degradation, Bioactivity, Ion Release, Adhesion, and Corrosion Behavior
Say, Yakup; Aslan, Naim; Cihangir, Salih; Murat, Oğuzkağan; Çaydaş, Ulaş
The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is particularly favored for orthopedic applications. However, important issues such as corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and ion release need to be addressed. Therefore, this study aims to enhance the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility and reduce the ion release of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy by applying Y2O3-doped bioglass bioceramic coatings. The coatings were synthesized using the sol-gel method, including pure BioGlass and BioGlass with 1, 5, and 10 wt pct Y2O3. These coatings were then evaluated for their corrosion resistance, adhesion strength, degradation behavior, bioactivity, and ion release. The results showed that all coatings exhibited homogeneous, crack-free, and porous morphologies, which are favorable for osteointegration. The addition of 10 wt pct Y2O3 to the BioGlass coating resulted in a 52 pct increment in adhesion strength, which increased from 13.72 ± 2.80 MPa for single BioGlass coatings to 20.81 ± 2.53 MPa. All samples showed degradation values lower than 1 wt pct. Single BioGlass coatings significantly enhanced the bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. However, the addition of Y2O3 negatively impacted BioGlass bioactivity, leading to a noticeable decrease as the Y2O3 content increased. Conversely, the presence of Y2O3 negatively impacted bioactivity and corrosion resistance while increasing the release of Ti ions. Specifically, the release of Ti ions increased from 79.5 ± 0.8 ppb in uncoated samples to 253.7 ± 15.3 ppb in BG-coated samples. For 1, 5, and 10 pct Y2O3-added samples, Ti releases were measured as 192.2 ± 33.6 ppb, 168.5 ± 62.4 ppb, and 194.3 ± 54.4 ppb, respectively. This research highlights the potential of tailored BioGlass coatings to improve the performance of Ti-6Al-4V alloys in orthopedic implant applications, particularly for enhancing bone integration and reducing implant failure.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains has intensified the need for novel antimicrobial agents. Herein, we report a facile one-pot green synthesis of quercetin-stabilized silver (Qn@AgNPs) and copper (Qn@CuNPs) nanoparticles using quercetin as both reductant and capping ligand. The resulting nanocomposites were fully characterized by UV–Vis spectroscopy (surface plasmon resonance peaks at 420 nm for Ag and 580 nm for Cu), FTIR (confirming quercetin–metal coordination), SEM/EDX (spherical particles, and XRD (face-centered cubic Ag and Cu phases). Density functional theory (B3LYP/3-21G) calculations yielded frontier molecular orbital gaps of 0.164 eV for Qn@AgNPs and 0.245 eV for Qn@CuNPs, with corresponding high softness values (12.20 and 8.16 eV⁻¹), indicating enhanced electron-transfer propensity. Molecular electrostatic potential maps revealed increased charge polarization around the metal centers. Antibacterial assays against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated minimum inhibitory concentrations of 2.11 ± 1.22 µg/mL and 4.69 ± 2.68 µg/mL for Qn@AgNPs, and 7.50 ± 0.00 µg/mL and 6.25 ± 0.17 µg/mL for Qn@CuNPs, significantly outperforming free quercetin (188 and 375 µg/mL). In silico docking against the S. epidermidis TcaR regulator (PDB: 1KZN) and E. coli DNA gyrase B (PDB: 1HSK) revealed strong binding affinities (–7.54 to − 10.15 kcal·mol⁻¹), consistent with the observed antimicrobial potency. This integrated experimental–computational study elucidates the mechanistic underpinnings of quercetin-mediated nanoparticle bioactivity and provides a rational framework for designing next-generation flavonoid-functionalized metal nanotherapeutics.

- MakaleYalnız künye2024Scopus SJRQ2Synthesis and characterization of TiNbZrMo medium-entropy bio-composites: Microstructure, mechanical properties, and in vitro degradation
Say, Yakup
This study reports the synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite (HA)-based bio-composites reinforced with varying amounts (by weight, 1–15 wt.%) of bio-medium entropy alloy (BioMEA) for load-bearing implant applications. BioMEA powders consisting of Ti, Nb, Zr, and Mo were mechanically alloyed for 100 h and subsequently added to HA using powder metallurgy techniques. To show the effect of BioMEA, the microstructure, density, and mechanical tests have been conducted and the synthesized BioMEA was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), x-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. In addition, in vitro degradation behavior and bioactivity analyses of bio-composites have been conducted. XRD analysis revealed the formation of BioMEA after 20 h of mechanical alloying. The highest density value of 2.47 g/cm3 was found in 15 wt.% BioMEA-reinforced bio-composite. The addition of BioMEA reinforcement led to a significant increase in hardness and tensile strength values, with the highest values observed at 15 wt.% reinforcement. Compression tests demonstrated a significant increase in compressive strength and deformation capability of the bio-composites with the highest values observed at 15 wt.% BioMEA addition. The highest toughness of 7.68 kJ/m2 was measured in 10 wt.% MEA-reinforced bio-composites. The produced bio-composite materials have an elastic modulus between 3.5–5.5 GPa, which may provide a solution to the stress shielding problems caused by the high elastic modulus of metallic implant materials. The most severe degradation occurred in 15 wt.% MEA-reinforced bio-composites, and the effect of degradation caused a decrease in Ca and an increase in Ti-Ni-Zr-Mo in all bio-composites. These findings suggest that HA/BioMEA bio-composites have the potential to be developed as advanced biomaterials with moderate mechanical and biological properties for load-bearing implant applications.

NiTi-based memory alloys are often used as intracorporeal implant materials because of their superelasticity and shape memory properties. However, over time, the release of nickel from the NiTi alloy into the body becomes unfavorable; therefore, studies should be conducted to reduce the negative impact of nickel leakage. In this study, the biocompatible selenium element was used to coat NiTi alloys with different thicknesses. The coating process was performed using the thermal evaporation technique. Scanning electron microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis measurements revealed that the surfaces of the samples were well covered. Also, the atomic force microscope device determined the surface roughness of the alloys. The roughness of the surface increased after the coating process. The Tafel test was accomplished to determine the biocompatibility of the coated and uncoated alloys in an artificial body fluid. The corrosion test reveals that Se-coated NiTi alloys have high corrosion resistance.

A non-equimolar TiZrCrNb0.3Ta0.07 medium entropy alloy (MEA) was successfully designed as theoretical and produced by arc-melting method from Ti1.0Nb0.3Ta0.07Zr0.05 (TNTZ) scraps for possible usage in biomedical applications in this study. The main aim of this study is to find an alternative way to recycle with a reduced carbon footprint the available TNTZ conventional alloy and convert it to a value-added product during this recycling such as medium entropy alloys (MEAs) via using less energy. To examine the microstructural changes induced by the annealing process, scanning electron microscopy was employed. The chemical composition of the HEAs was assessed using energy-dispersive spectroscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, x-ray diffraction analysis was used to determine the crystallographic structure and phase composition of HEAs. Furthermore, in order to evaluate the electrochemical corrosion performance of the alloys, comprehensive in vitro corrosion tests were conducted in a simulated body fluid solution, specifically Hanks's Balanced Salt Solution. Some elemental segregation has been observed after the annealing process. A big migration of Zr and Cr elements was observed in the samples from the interdendritic region to the dendritic area during the annealing process. This segregation resulted in approximately 1.4 times increase in the hardness of the MEA. The electrochemical corrosion results showed that the in vitro resistance of the MEAs was higher than that of its conventional scraps.

Say, Yakup; Dikici, Burak; Kaseem, Mosab; Özkul, İskender; Güler, Ömer
CoCrFeNi alloy is the most well-known four-component equiatomic alloy. In addition, it has a low-cost composition among HEAs. Four-component alloys are considered semi-HEAs. Therefore, a five-component HEA design was made by adding another metal to the main composition of CoCrFeNi. As the fifth metal, two metals such as Al and Ti, which are relatively low in cost and have the potential to improve properties, were chosen. For this purpose, in this study, the effect of Al and Ti on CoCrFeNi main alloy was investigated by producing three different samples as CoCrFeNi, CoCrFeNiAl, and CoCrFeNiTi. The alloys with three different compositions (used three different samples) were successfully produced by the mechanical alloying method. Although Al and Ti have the possibility of intermetallic with other metals in the alloy, such a formation was not observed during mechanical alloying, and it was observed that all metals were homogeneously distributed in the alloy. The microhardness results indicated that CoCrFeNiAl and CoCrFeNiTi samples had similar hardness values. While the hardness of the CoCrFeNi sample was 136 HV, the hardness of the CoCrFeNiAl sample was 262 HV. However, the hardness of the CoCrFeNiTi sample decreased significantly. The hardness of the CoCrFeNiTi sample was measured as 269 HV. It was observed that the addition of Ti and Al to the base alloy was increased a significant change in hardness. It has been observed that Ti supplementation has a more positive effect on improving corrosion properties. It is seen that the corrosion potentials shift toward more negative potentials with the addition of Al and Ti to the CoCrFeNi (−194 mV) alloy (−306 and −224 mV for CoCrFeNiAl and CoCrFeNiTi, respectively). When the surface morphologies of the alloys are compared after corrosion; the damage to the alloy surfaces increases due to the negative Ecorr value in CoCrFeNiAl and CoCrFeNiTi alloys compared to the master alloy. However, the high corrosion current density (12.69 µA/cm2) in the CoCrFeNiTi sample caused much more damage to this alloy. Graphical Abstract: (Figure presented.)

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023The Effects of Hydroxyapatite on the Corrosion Behaviour of AZ Series Mg Alloys
Say, Yakup
Metallic biomaterials are widely used in the orthopedic and dental applications owing to their advanced biocompatibility and sophisticated mechanical properties. Many studies are carried out to develop new alloys with high specific strength, high corrosion resistance and high biocompatibility as an alternative to present metallic biomaterials. Mg alloys are potential alloys as a biomaterial, especially because they have low density and high biocompatibility. However, especially the corrosion properties of Mg alloys need to be improved. In this study, the surfaces of AZ31, AZ61 and AZ91 alloys, which are promising as biomaterials, were coated with hydroxyapatite with high biocompatibility, and the effects of the bioceramics coatings on corrosion resistance were comprehensively investigated. Crack-free and porous surface morphologies were obtained in all bioceramic coatings and the presence of the coatings on the surfaces was supported by EDS analysis. As a result of the corrosion tests performed in SBF, it was determined that the AZ91 alloy had the highest corrosion resistance among the uncoated samples. The hydroxyapatite bioceramic coatings also improved the corrosion properties of all samples. However, among all samples, the highest corrosion resistance was obtained in the hydroxyapatite coated AZ91 alloy.

Sakar, Erdem; Guler, Omer; Alım, Bünyamin; Say, Yakup; Dikici, Burak
It is well known that high entropy alloys (HEAs) have a wide range of potential applications as radiation shielding due to their superior properties. The CoNiFeCr-Ti/Al compositions were chosen for their low cost as HEA in this study. The HEAs were successfully produced using the mechanical alloying (MA) method with equimolar CoNiFeCr, CoNiFeCrAl, and CoNiFeCrTi compositions. The production and structural properties of the alloys were investigated in detail. Besides, the photon and particle radiation shielding properties of the HEAs were calculated with the help of Phy-X/PSD, SRIM (10 keV-20 MeV), and ESTAR (10 keV-20 MeV) programs. The photon-matter interaction parameters were calculated in both specific photon energies emitted from 241Am, 133Ba, 109Cd, 60Co, 137Cs, 131I, and 22Na nuclides and a continuous energy range of 15 keV-15 MeV. The characterization of the alloys was investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) attached to an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). It was found that the HEAs have a highly amorphous structure due to the selected production method. The crystal size of the alloys was calculated as 70, 35, and 20 nm for CoNiFeCr, CoNiFeCrAl, and CoNiFeCrTi, respectively. In terms of shielding properties, it has been determined that the produced HEAs have better shielding characteristics for photon and particle radiations than standard shielding concretes. In addition, the results demonstrated that CoNiFeCr alloy, which has the best shielding ability among the HEA alloys, can be used as a shielding material application requiring photon, electron, proton, alpha, and neutron radiations.

Austenitic stainless steels (SSs) are commonly used as in-core and surrounding structural materials in today’s industrial BWR and PWR systems. Such adaptable steels have also been the primary materials studied and used in several advanced nuclear reactor technologies, such as fast breeding and magnetic fusion reactors. In this study, some critical material properties, such as structural, physical, and radiation-shielding properties of REX-734 and 316L SS, were experimentally evaluated and compared to those of a number of other alloys. In addition to homogeneous element distribution, both alloys exhibit strong crystal orientation. The REX-734 alloy has a tensile strength of 1,259 MPa, whereas the 316L SS alloy has a tensile strength of 495 MPa. Moreover, nitrogen in the REX-734 alloy formed ultra-hard nitrides with Cr, Nb, and Si and precipitated into the structure and increased the strength. According to our findings, the mass attenuation coefficient values of the 316L SS sample were slightly higher than those of the REX-734 sample at all energies. It can be concluded that the REX-734 sample, with its exceptional strength qualities and excellent radiation attenuation capabilities, may be a viable nuclear power plant material for future investigations.

Say, Yakup; Kanca, Muhammed Sait; Kök, Mediha
NiTinol alloy has recently been in high demand in biomaterials applications due to its excellent superelasticity and shape memory properties. This demand has increased the studies on improving the negative properties of the NiTinol alloy, even if it is less. In this study, it was aimed to coat the nickel element in the NiTi alloy with biocompatible elements in order to prevent it from secreting its toxic effect after its implantation into the body. In accordance with this purpose, NiTi shape memory alloys were coated with silver and copper element by using thermal evaporation system, and the surface morphology of the alloys after coating was investigated by SEM–EDX (Scanning Electron microscope), and AFM (Atomic force Microscope). After the measurements, it was observed that the coating was successful and homogeneously distributed on the entire surface of the alloy. In addition, an important and positive result was that, the roughness value of the NiTi alloy was decreased with the coating. The change in the crystal structure of the uncoated and coated NiTi alloy was evaluated using an X-ray device, and it was observed that the silver and copper element peaks were formed along with the B2 phase, which is the main phase of the NiTi alloy. In order to examine the effect of coating on the biocompatibility of NiTi alloy, electrochemical test was performed by rapid measurement method in simulated body fluid and corrosion behavior was investigated. According to these experiments, it was concluded that silver plating is more successful in term of biocompatibility than copper coating.

In this study, NiMnCoSn alloy was produced in the arc melting furnace and then grounded into small powder particles. After this procedure, particles of alloys were pelletized and heat treatment was applied to pellet alloys for 3 different temperatures (500 oC,700 oC and 900 oC). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and physical property measuring system (PMMS) were used for determining physical properties of samples. The biggest feature of NiMn-based shape memory alloys is that they are magnetically based. The feature that distinguishes magnetic shape memory alloys from traditional ones is that the shape memory effect is magnetic. For this reason, studies of NiMn-based alloys are becoming very popular. It was observed that, grounding procedure is effected all physical properties of NiMnSnCo shape memory alloys, seriously.

FeCrCoNiMo0,5(MnAl)0.3 high-entropy alloy (HEA) was manufactured via arc melting process by adding the related metal powders into scrap of 316 L stainless steel for corrosion resistance tests under salt and acid conditions. Cyclic potentiodynamic polarization experiments performed under acidic conditions revealed pre-passivation due to abundance of network modifying metals in HEA composition which was further analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Elemental resolved analysis of leftover solutions was used to compare metal ions released during corrosion. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the phase change in heat treated HEA samples. Non-heat treated HEA samples can be compared with stainless steel under moderate corrosion conditions and had better hardness results.

Poly ɛ-caprolactone (PCL) and poly lactic acid (PLA) stand out as biocompatible polymers. In this study, PCL and PLA were blended in 40:60 ratio, respectively, and then the Gd2O3 compound, which is an important earth element oxide, was mixed in PLA–PCL shape memory polymer (SMP) blend at different rates and polymer blend nanocomposites were obtained. First of all, the effects of Gd2O3 oxide on the thermal properties of the SMP blend were determined with a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and it was determined that Gd2O3 did not have a significant effect on the melting temperature of the blend, while it significantly increased its thermal stability. As a result of the XRD (X-ray diffraction) analysis of the composites at room temperature, it was determined that the semicrystalline blend, with the addition of Gd2O3, increased its crystalline property. When the shape memory effect was examined, it was understood that the additive did not eliminate the shape memory effect. When the magnetic property of the gadolinium oxide-doped composite, which is magnetocaloric oxide, was examined, the magnetic property of the composite changed from diamagnetic to paramagnetic with increasing additives. Finally, the mechanical properties of the shape memory blend composite were investigated and no regular changes were observed in the mechanical properties with increasing Gd2O3.

Key, Sefa; Demir, Sukru; Aydın, Oğuz; Say, Yakup; Erten, Mehmet
Background: Many implant options could be preferable for fixation after osteotomy in varus knee medial compartment arthrosis. Due to usage characteristics, it is important to compare the biomechanical properties of them. For this purpose, we aimed to examine three different implant types biomechanically in our study. Methods: Ovine tibiae undergoing medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy were fixed in vitro with three different implants using an angular wedge plate, a metal block plate and an external fixator system. The fixed ovine tibiae were subjected to axial tensile, axial loading and three-point bending tests in a test machine. All biomechanical tests were repeated five times, the maximum and minimum values were ignored, and the average values of the remaining three test results were taken into account. The test results were interpreted after converted into force-elongation curves in Trapezium-X software. Findings: Biomechanical test results revealed some differences between implant types. While the metal block plate had the highest axial tensile strength value, it was the fixation group showing the lowest strength in axial load tests. The used fixator system was the highest strength in axial load tests and the lowest strength in axial tensile tests. Interpretation: Considering the clinically significant forces related to the biomechanical stability of the three different implants used for high tibial osteotomy, the fixator system would appear to be slightly superior, although it should be noted that torsional forces, as well as parameters that could change in living tissue, might affect the results.

Say, Yakup; Aksakal, Bunyamin; Sinirlioglu, Zeynep A.
The effects of silver (Ag), selenium (Se), and chitosan (Cht) additives on the antibacterial activity and cell viability of NiTi were investigated. Three different hydroxyapatite (HA)-based bioceramic coatings to improve the antibacterial activity and cell viability of NiTi; HA, HA/Ag, and HA/Se–Cht were applied to NiTi substrates by a sol–gel method. The coated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy–electron-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction and surface hardnesses were measured. The antimicrobial efficiency of the coatings and uncoated surfaces were tested against Escherichia coli-JM 103 and Staphylococcus aureus-ATCC29293. In vitro cell–material interactions using Saos-2 osteoblast cells were characterized by a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (mitochondrial activity test) assay for cell viability. A homogeneous, crack-free, and porous surface morphology is achieved in coatings. It has been shown that the Se–Cht additives did not have a significant effect on the surface hardness of the HA coating, but the Ag additive increased the hardness. Through in vitro antibacterial activity and cell viability tests, it was shown that Ag additive to bioceramic coatings significantly increased (p <.05) antibacterial properties but caused a decrease in cell viability. However, although Se–Cht additives did not have a significant effect on antibacterial properties (p <.05), it was observed that they increased cell viability.

BackgroundThe aim of this study is to histologically and biomechanically investigate the effects of local PRP and ozone therapy (O2O3) on tendon-to-bone healing in a rabbit model of the supraspinatus tendon tear.MethodsFour groups were formed to have seven rabbits in each group: repair, R; repair + PRP, RP; repair + ozone, RO; and repair + PRP + ozone, RPO. The supraspinatus tendon was detached by sharp dissection from the footprint and an acute tear pattern was created. Thereafter, tendon repair was performed with the transosseous technique. In the RP group, PRP, and in the RPO group, PRP + O2O3 mixture was injected to the tendon repair site. In the RO group, O2O3 gas mixture was injected into subacromial space three times a week for a total of 4 weeks. The study was ended at postoperative 6th week.ResultsWhen compared with the R group, a statistically significant increase was observed in the biomechanical strength of the RP and RPO groups. The highest increase in biomechanical strength was detected in the RPO group. The histology of the RO and RPO groups showed better collagen fiber continuity and orientation than the R and RP groups.ConclusionsThe results obtained from this study show that the ozonized PRP can be used as biological support to increase tendon-to-bone healing. However, these results need to be supported by clinical studies.
