Purpose: To evaluate and compare the effects of topical Maresin-1 (MaR1) and cyclosporine A (CsA) in a capsaicin-induced rat model of neurotrophic keratopathy (NK). Methods: A total of 40 Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to five groups (n = 8 per group): Control, NK, NK + Vehicle, NK + CsA (0.05%), and NK + MaR1. Except for the Control group, all animals received a single subcutaneous injection of capsaicin (50 mg/kg) on postnatal day 2. Topical treatments were applied twice daily for 14 days. Corneal TrkA, TNF-α, and Caspase-3 expression were assessed by immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Results: Both treatment groups significantly restored TrkA expression and reduced TNF-α and Caspase-3 relative to NK + Vehicle (p < 0.05 for all). CsA produced greater suppression of TNF-α than MaR1 (p < 0.001), whereas MaR1 demonstrated greater reduction in Caspase-3 than CsA (p = 0.013), with no significant difference between groups for TrkA (p = 0.054). Conclusion: Both MaR1 and CsA significantly attenuated the neurotrophic, inflammatory, and apoptotic changes associated with experimental NK. The distinct efficacy profiles of the two agents suggest complementary mechanisms of action and warrant further investigation of MaR1 in neurotrophic keratopathy.

Detachment from nature is contributing to the environmental crisis and reversing this trend requires detailed monitoring and targeted interventions to reconnect people to nature. Most tools measuring nature exposure and attachment were developed in high-income countries and little is known about their robustness across national and linguistic groups. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey to assess measurement invariance of the Nature Exposure Scale (NES) and the Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). While multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MG-CFA) of the NES supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, only partial scalar invariance was supported across national and linguistic groups. MG-CFA of the CNS also supported full scalar invariance across gender identities and age groups, but only partial scalar invariance of a 7-item version of the CNS across national and linguistic groups. Nation-level associations between NES and CNS scores were negligible, likely reflecting a lack of conceptual clarity over what the NES is measuring. Individual-level associations between both measures and sociodemographic variables were weak. Findings suggest that the CNS-7 may be a useful tool to measure nature connectedness globally, but measures other than the NES may be needed to capture nature exposure cross-culturally.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Scopus SJRQ2DNA barcoding and phylogenetic analysis of endemic Astragalus nezaketiae and Vicia alpestris subsp. hypoleuca (Fabaceae):Evidence from nrDNA ITS and cpDNA matK and rbcL sequences
Paksoy, Mehmet Y.; Sevİndİk, Emre; Başköse, İsa
In this study, we performed DNA barcoding and phylogenetic analysis using one nuclear (ITS) and two chloroplast DNA regions (matK and rbcL) of endemic Astragalus nezaketiae A. Duran & Aytaçand Vicia alpestris Stev. subsp. hypoleuca (Boiss.) Davis taxa in Turkey. PCR reactions were performed using universal primers. Sequences of the PCR products were edited using BioEdit and FinchTV software and contigs were obtained. All contigs were Blasted at NCBI and similarities were analysed. Using the MEGA 6.0 program, maximum likelihood trees were constructed including some sequences retrieved from NCBI. For Astragalus nezaketiae; in the ITS analysis, Astragalus nezaketiae appeared separately from other species, and for matK, Astragalus nezaketiae appeared together with Astragalus cicer L. However, rbcL tree was polytomic. For Vicia alpestris subsp. hypoleuca; in ITS, rbcL and matK results Vicia alpestris subsp. hypoleuca were found together with Vicia cracca L., Vicia benghalensis L. and Vicia villosa Roth species. Analysis of the combined data revealed similar results with all barcode regions for Vicia alpestris subsp. hypoleuca while different phylogenetic results were obtained for Astragalus nezaketiae.

This study was to evaluate the BHA and basil essential oil on the quality attributes of deep-fried sardine fillets and frying oil. The extent of lipid oxidation was monitored by measuring peroxide value (PV), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), TBA, and changes in free fatty acids. Sensory analysis and color values upon the frying period were also determined. PV, FFA, TBA, and TBARS values in fish fillets and frying oil have peaked and then decreased at the end of frying except for the control. BEO showed the highest sensory scores compared to others. As a result, it is not possible to make a clear judgment about the effect of the natural or synthetic antioxidants on all lipid oxidation products that may occur during frying both fish fillets and frying oil. This study suggests that secondary oxidation products in frying oil and the sensorial quality of fish fillets can be better controlled by using basil essential oil.

Several studies are conducted to reduce the salt and various strategies are being developed for this purpose. Consumption of processed meat products is often preferred and salt is used for purposes such as ripening, flavouring, and preservation during their production. Many studies have shown that the excessive salt consumption has negative health effects and so that reducing sodium is important. In this study, the physical and sensory quality of the marinated anchovy produced with potassium salt instead of sodium salt was investigated. Anchovy used in this study was purchased from a local fish market as filleted. Anchovy fillets were transported to the laboratory in ice. Anchovy marinades were produced on the same day. The study consisted of 5 groups and all groups were produced the same day. During the marination acid and salt amounts and pH were monitored. Proximate composition (protein, fat, ash, moisture, sodium, and potassium), physical (colour measurement, cooking loss, texture profile analyses), and sensory (appearance-colour, odour, taste, texture, overall acceptability) quality analyses were performed on day 0. As a result, the best partial sodium replacement was obtained with 50% potassium salt by preserving the physical and sensory quality as in marinates prepared with only 100% sodium salt.

Korkmaz, Volkan; Güngördü, Abbas; Ozmen, Murat
This study evaluated the toxic effects and recovery patterns in zebrafish (Danio rerio) after exposure to phosalone-based (PBP) and cypermethrin-based (CBP) pesticides. Initially, the 96 h LC50 values of the pesticides were calculated as being 5.35 µg of active ingredient (AI) L−1 for CBP and 217 µg AI L−1 for PBP based on measured concentrations. Accordingly, experimental groups were exposed to three sublethal concentrations of pesticides for 96 h, separately, and then zebrafish were transferred to pesticide-free conditions for 10 and 20 days recovery periods. Biochemical markers were assessed including carboxylesterase (CaE), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), lactate dehydrogenase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, alanine and aspartate aminotransferase (ALT, AST) activities after the exposure and recovery periods. Also, the pesticide concentrations in test water were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Our results showed that AChE and CaE activities were significantly inhibited and GST was induced by both pesticides after 96 h exposure. For PBP exposure, the decreases for GST induction and CaE inhibition showed a partial recovery in pesticide-free conditions. However, the decreases in AChE activity for CBP exposure and insufficient increases in same enzyme activity for PBP exposure after 20 days in pesticide-free conditions indicated that the projected recovery period was not enough to the recovery of AChE activities and for the improvement of fish health.

In this study, the applications of the extended sinh-Gordon equation expansion method to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation that describes the nonlinear spin dynamics of (2 + 1)-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chains with bilinear and anisotropic interactions in the semiclassical limit is presented. We successfully construct dark, bright, combined dark-bright, singular and combined singular soliton solutions to this equation. We give the parametric conditions for the existence of valid soliton to each of the obtained solutions. We plot the 2D and 3D graphics to some of the obtained solutions. The reported results of this study may be helpful in explaining the physical meaning of the studied model.

In this study, we evaluated effects of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl herbicide on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The wheat plants were grown in pots containing perlite. Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl was applied to adequately grown T. aestivum plants at determined doses (1 mM, 1.5 mM, 2.2 mM, 3.4 mM and 5.1 mM) via spraying. The effects of this herbicide on some antioxidant enzymes, lipid peroxidation, carotenoid, total chlorophyll and total phenolic were investigated on days 1, 5 and 10 following the application. Environmental pollutants cause oxidative stress, production of free radicals and changes in antioxidants. Synthesis of signal molecules such as salicylic acid (SA) is important for the stress response of plants. In addition to this, although selenium is known not to be an obligatory element for plants, low dose selenium has positive effects on the plant growth. We also investigated the effects that are elicited on parameters above mentioned by the treatment of exogenous 0.5 mM SA and 0.004 mM organic selenium (SeI) separately. Our findings reveal that SA and SeI, which are externally applied before the germination of seeds that are exposed to herbicide stress, becomes effective in reduction of the negative effects of fenoxaprop-p-ethyl, with regard to antioxidant system, lipid peroxidation, pigment system and total phenolic. When we evaluate the study results, our findings suggest that especially SA plays a protective role on wheat against herbicide stress.

The current study was aimed to investigate the detoxifying and antioxidant enzyme response of Gammarus pulex exposed to malachite green (MG) after decolorization by Coriolus versicolor. Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize the decolorization conditions of MG synthetic solutions by C. versicolor. Glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione S-transferase (GST), cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) activities in G. pulex exposed to undecolorized (A1) and decolorized (A2) MG synthetic solution during 24 and 96 h were tested by using ELISA method. SOD and GPX enzyme activity was increased after decolorization (p > 0.05). CAT enzyme activity was increased in A2 group during 24 h (p > 0.05) but decreased during 96 h (p < 0.05). GSH levels were increased in A2 group during 24 and 96 h (p < 0.05). GST, CYP1A1 enzyme activity and MDA levels were decreased after decolorization during 96 h (p < 0.05). In this study, GSH levels, CAT, GST and CYP1A1 activities in G. pulex approved the capability of C. versicolor in MG decolorization, optimized with RSM.
