A Parametric Study on a Thermoelectric-Integrated Battery Thermal Management System for Electric Vehicles: New Designs Utilizing Different Numbers of Thermoelectric Modules

    Tuğan, Volkan

The safety, lifespan, and performance of battery systems in electric vehicles directly depend on the implementation of an effective thermal management strategy. In this study, a novel lithium-ion battery thermal management system integrated with a wavy cooling channel and different numbers of thermoelectric modules is proposed. Computational fluid dynamics-based numerical simulations were conducted at two ambient temperatures (298.15 K and 303.15 K) and three different thermoelectric temperatures (288.15 K, 293.15 K, and 298.15 K). Three configurations with four, six, and eight thermoelectric modules were analyzed and compared with the conventional case without thermoelectrics. The lowest maximum battery temperature was obtained with the design employing eight thermoelectric modules under the conditions of 298.15 K ambient temperature and 288.15 K thermoelectric temperature. It was found that integrating thermoelectrics into the battery thermal management system reduced the maximum battery temperature by up to 12.11 K and the maximum temperature difference by up to 5.83 K. Furthermore, maintaining the thermoelectric temperature approximately 5–10 K below the ambient temperature was identified as a critical design parameter to ensure both efficient cooling and thermal homogeneity. The use of different numbers of thermoelectric modules and the selection of appropriate operating temperatures were shown to play a decisive role in optimizing system performance.

Modeling of Optimal Power Generation in Small Hydropower Plants

    Kahraman, Gokhan

Small hydropower plants (SHPs) have gained international attention as a reliable and versatile renewable energy source. Unfortunately, this energy source is not used efficiently. This is because these systems utilize headwaters with lower water capacity called forebays instead of large water reservoirs like dams. Since this hinders the control of electricity generation, the headwater is either wasted before it can be converted into electricity or it is exhausted very quickly and electricity generation stops after a short time. The aim of this study is to prevent the loss of electricity generation through the efficient use of SHP headwater. For this purpose, a mathematical model was created based on two SHPs operating in tandem. The mathematical model obtained was analyzed, and forebay water level simulation graphs for electricity generation at water flowrates of 2000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 kg/h were obtained. With the help of the obtained graphs, critical wicket gate openings for maximum electricity generation at flowrates of 2000, 4000, 6000, and 8000 kg/h were calculated. The results of this study are applicable to all SHPs. These results are also promising in terms of optimizing the use of a renewable energy source.

Control of vortex shedding using a screen attached on the separation point of a circular cylinder and its effect on drag

Ozkan, Gokturk Memduh; Firat, Erhan; Akilli, Huseyin

The control of flow in the wake of a circular cylinder by an attached permeable plate having various porosity ratios was analyzed experimentally using both particle image velocimetry (PIV) and dye visualization techniques. The force measurements were also done in order to interpret the effect of control method on drag coefficient. The diameter of the cylinder and length to diameter ratio of the plate were kept constant as D=50mm and L/D=1.0, respectively. The porosity ratio, β, which can be defined as the ratio of open surface area to the whole body surface area, was taken as β=0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, and 0.8 (permeable plates). The study was performed considering deep water flow conditions with a constant Reynolds number of ReD=5000 based on the cylinder diameter. Each permeable plate was attached on the separation point and the results were compared with the results of cylinder without permeable plate (plain cylinder) in order to understand the control effect. Both qualitative and quantitative results revealed that the permeable plates of 0.4 ≤ β ≤ 0.6 are effective on controlling the unsteady flow structure downstream of the cylinder, i.e., the vortex formation length was increased, turbulent statistics was reduced and vortex shedding frequency was diminished when the permeable plate attached normal to the cylinder surface from the lower separation point. However, the drag force acting on the cylinder was found to be increased due to the increased cross-sectional area.
