Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent malignancies among women. Recent studies have explored the potential of phytochemicals such as caffeine as chemosensitizing agents in enhancing the efficacy of standard chemotherapeutics like paclitaxel. This study aimed to investigate the cytotoxic, apoptotic, inflammatory, and oxidative stress-related effects of caffeine alone and in combination with paclitaxel in MCF-7 cells. Cells were treated with various concentrations of caffeine (1–100 mM), paclitaxel (0–350 µg/mL), and their combinations for 24, 48, and 72 h. Cell viability was assessed using the MTS assay, and IC₅₀ values were calculated. The expression levels of Bax, Bcl-2, NF-κB, and Nrf2 proteins were analyzed by Western blotting. Both caffeine and paclitaxel induced time- and dose-dependent reductions in MCF-7 cell viability. The combination treatment showed synergistic cytotoxicity, with significantly lower IC₅₀ values compared to single-agent treatments. Western blot analysis showed that both treatments boosted pro-apoptotic Bax and decreased anti-apoptotic Bcl-2, with slightly less effect in the combination group. NF-κB levels increased considerably in caffeine and paclitaxel groups, but were lower in the combination group compared to paclitaxel alone, suggesting a possible reduction in inflammatory signaling. Nrf2 expression increased significantly with caffeine, suggesting oxidative stress responses. In MCF-7 cells, caffeine enhanced paclitaxel's pro-apoptotic and cytotoxic actions and modified inflammation and oxidative stress pathways in a complicated, dose-dependent manner. Cytotoxicity was synergistic; however, apoptotic and stress indicators may be antagonistic. In clinical circumstances, caffeine may be an adjuvant in breast cancer treatment, however mechanistic and in vivo investigations are needed.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ1Health risk assessment of heavy metal accumulation in fruits exposed to geothermal waters: a case study and global implications
Arslan Topal, E Işıl; Topal, Murat; Çelik, Erdal; Öbek, Erdal
BACKGROUND: The present study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals (HMs) in the fruits and leaves of mulberry and sour cherry trees exposed to water from Sivas geothermal basin (Turkey). RESULTS: The target HMs were ranked according to their hazard index as: Cd < Pb < Zn < Cu < Ni < Mn < Cr. The total hazard index for mulberry and sour cherry fruits was calculated as 7.87 and 4.57, respectively, and was determined to be well above the safe threshold value of 1.0. At the same time, the calculated cancer risk values exceeded the established maximum limit (1.0 × 10−4) for Ni (6.4 × 10−3) in mulberry fruit and for Cr (1.15 × 10−3) in sour cherry fruit. Ingestion has been identified as the primary route of exposure. The study results showed that Cr and Ni metals were ranked in the order of mulberry fruit > sour cherry fruit > mulberry leaf > sour cherry leaf, and that for mulberry and sour cherry fruit. CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that edible foods exposed to geothermal waters may have adverse effects on human health. Furthermore, the study highlights the necessity of reducing water discharges from geothermal fields and implementing phytoremediation strategies to ensure food safety in geothermally active agricultural basins.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2026Scopus SJRQ2Data-Driven Prediction of Climate Variables in Agricultural Cities of India With Hybrid GA-TCN-LSTM Model
Utku, Anil
Accurate prediction of climate variables is important in reducing the effects of natural disasters and taking preventive measures for agriculture and food security, energy sector, public health, and water resources management. For agricultural production, it is essential for producers to determine strategies for their agricultural activities and to increase agricultural productivity. Issues such as determining planting and harvest times, determining pesticides to be used against agricultural pests, selecting products to be planted, irrigation, and sustainable agriculture are directly related to climate variables. In this study, a GA-TCN-LSTM hybrid prediction model was created to determine climate variables such as relative humidity, temperature, wind speed, and dew point in Bhopal, Indore, Kanpur, Ludhiana, and Patna, which are among the prominent cities of India in terms of agricultural production. The hyper-parameters of the developed model using the temporal convolutional networks (TCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) were optimized with the genetic algorithm (GA), and the GA-TCN-LSTM hybrid model was created. GA-TCN-LSTM was extensively compared with the base TCN-LSTM, convolutional neural network (CNN), LSTM, TCN, and CNN-LSTM. The compared models were tested using approximately 15 years of hourly, up-to-date, and real-time data of the cities. Experiments showed that GA-TCN-LSTM outperformed the compared models and had above 0.9 R-Squared (R2) for the majority of cities and climate variables.

Luciobarbus esocinus (mangar), a critically endangered mega-fish species (≤ 140 kg) endemic to the Euphrates and Tigris river systems, faces severe threats due to habitat fragmentation. To assess its spatial ecology in the Keban Reservoir, 30 individuals were acoustically tagged and monitored for 218–437 days using 18 receivers deployed in the reservoir. The tagged fish exhibited low site fidelity, with station residency indices (RI) ranging from 0.00 to 0.46 and detection periods lasting 59–153 days. Depth and temperature data (115,318 and 112,789 records, respectively) revealed seasonal habitat shifts: individuals occupied deeper waters in winter (mean 10.1 m), shallower depths in spring (4.4 m) and summer (3.8 m), and tolerated temperatures of 7.4°C–28.4°C. Although depth use was weakly correlated with temperature, trends indicated shallower occupancy during warmer periods. Home range analyses showed a maximum linear home range (LHR) of 36.5 km and the areal home range estimated via minimum convex polygon (MCP) was 6422.8 ha. In addition, kernel density (KD) analysis revealed the 95% KD area was 2877.0 ha, the 75% KD area was 67.7 ha and the 50% KD area was 33.8 ha. Seasonal migrations spanned 25–30 km upstream/downstream from release sites, particularly toward tributaries in spring. Around the Keban Reservoir, 14 hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) present and most of these HPP are not designed suitable fish passages. Urgent conservation measures are needed, including Fish Conservation Zones in critical habitats and connectivity restoration via functional fishways, to safeguard this imperilled species in fragmented river-reservoir ecosystems.

Doğan, Fatih
The coatings were prepared by blending different concentrations of SWCNTs and CeO2 particles with an epoxy resin by hydrothermal method, which was then applied to the substrate through the doctor blade technique. The mixtures were transferred into a 1-L capacity autoclave with a teflon-lined flange type and subjected to hydrothermal treatment at 100°C for 3 h. The surface coatings were applied using a doctor blade. Subsequently, the coated materials were placed in an oven and dried for 12 h at 50°C under vacuum conditions. The samples' structural analysis was examined through x-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis verified the CeO2/SWCNT composite coating, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was utilized to assess the presence of functional groups. Thermodynamic properties and thermal stability of composite coatings that were modified with SWCNTs and CeO2 particles were studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The impact of the CeO2/SWCNT composite on the anticorrosion capabilities of the epoxy coating was examined through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Nyquist curve, and Tafel slope characterization. Corrosion tests were conducted on the CeO2/SWCNT composite coatings in a 3.5 wt% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution at 25°C to improve corrosion resistance. The concentration of 0.4 wt% CeO2 was found to be optimal for achieving effective corrosion resistance. The composite coating CNT0.6-C0.4 exhibited significantly higher Ecorr (−426 V) and lower Icorr (2.96 × 10−6 A cm−2) values compared to samples from the CNT0, CNT0.2, and CNT0.6 groups. The paper presents a viable solution with CeO2/SWCNT composite coating for the engineering application of corrosive-inhibiting coatings.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ1Evaluation of antioxidant, antimicrobial, and bioactive properties and peptide sequence composition of Malatya apricot kernels
Aydın, Çağlar Mert; Çelikbıçak, Ömür; Hayaloğlu, Ali Adnan
BACKGROUND: This study used four different apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernels cultivated in Malatya during two consecutive years. The varieties were Hacihaliloglu, Hasanbey, Kabaasi, and Zerdali. The physicochemical properties of the kernels were determined, and the bioactive content of the kernels was evaluated using kernel hydrolysates prepared using trypsin. RESULTS: With regard to the physicochemical properties of the kernels, the dry matter ratio and protein content were the highest in the Hacihaliloglu variety; the ash ratio was the highest in the Kabaasi variety, and the free oil ratio was the highest in the Hasanbey variety. The bioactive compound content changed according to kernel variety. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors activity was found to be the highest in the Hacihaliloglu and Hasanbey varieties, which had the lowest amygdalin content, and Zerdali had the highest amygdalin content. The antioxidant and antimicrobial effects of the kernels varied, with Hasanbey and Kabaasi generally having the highest content in both analyses. Moreover, a concentration of 20 mg mL−1 of the hydrolysate was determined to have a destructive effect for the microorganisms used in this study. The storage protein of the kernels, except Hacihaliloglu, was found to be Prunin 1, with the longest matching protein chain in the kernels being R.QQQGGQLMANGLEETFCSLRLK.E. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the peptide sequences identified in the kernels could have antihypertensive, antioxidative, and Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory effects. Consequently, apricot kernels show potential for use in the production of functional food products. Of the kernels evaluated in this study, Hacihaliloglu and Hasanbey were deemed the most suitable varieties due to their higher bioactive content and lower amygdalin content.

Autovino, Dario; Bagarello, Vincenzo; Iovino, Massimo; Lassabatere, Laurent; Yilmaz, Deniz
BEST (Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters) methods of soil hydraulic characterisation are widely applied for estimating sorptivity, S, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks. Calculating these properties requires choosing the β and γ parameters of the Haverkamp infiltration model. These parameters can be obtained from numerically simulated three-dimensional (3D) infiltration runs reaching steady-state. This investigation tested dependence of the estimated β and γ parameters on the algorithm for steady-state selection using simulated 3D cumulative infiltrations for different soils and initial conditions. Two algorithms used the original simulation outputs and included using (i) a threshold defining steadiness (T-algorithm) and (ii) the last four data points, yielding a reference value of steady-state infiltration rate (R-algorithm). A third algorithm, similar to the R-algorithm, was applied to previously re-sampled infiltration data at fixed time intervals (RR-algorithm). The intercept, bs, of the straight line fitted to the data describing steady-state on the cumulative infiltration plot depended on the applied algorithm more than the slope of this line. Consequently, β varied with the applied algorithm more than γ. The RR-algorithm, yielding 0.62 ≤ β ≤ 1.99 and 0.74 ≤ γ ≤ 0.98, was preferred since it mediated between advantages and disadvantages of T- and R-algorithms. The influence of the choice of proper values for β and γ on the estimates of S and Ks was evaluated using BEST. Using the default values of β (0.6) and γ (0.75) yielded accurate estimates of S but not of Ks. Soil dependent β and γ values should be used in this case. A check of the reliability of the estimates of bs can be made by a sequential analysis of the cumulative infiltration data. Future developments include considering sources differing in size and establishing if the suggested β and γ values apply in general to the available BEST algorithms.

Recently, there has been a great demand for boron-containing compounds (BCCs) with unique biological properties. The demand for the use of these compounds not alone but as additives in composite materials is increasing day by day. In this study, the effect of adding B2O3 compound to the blend of PLA and PEG polymers, which is an important biocompatible shape memory polymer, was investigated. In order to examine the effect of increasing B2O3 additive on the thermal properties of PLA-PEG blend, it was determined by using a Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and it was seen that while the melting temperature of PEG decreased, the melting temperature of PLA increased. In addition, when the thermal stability of the composites was examined, increasing of thermal stability was observed with the addition of B2O3 and a three-step degradation occurred. It was determined that the B2O3/PLA-PEG composite was homogeneous by taking X-ray measurements and SEM measurements. The antimicrobial property of the PLA-PEG blend improved with the increasing B2O3 contribution were observed from the antimicrobial activity measurements of the composite against 4 different bacteria. However, it was determined that the PLA-PEG blend preserved its shape memory effect with increasing diboron trioxide contribution.

Yilmaz, D.; Lassabatere, L.; Moret-Fernandez, D.; Rahmati, M.; Angulo-Jaramillo, R.; Latorre, B.
Estimating of soil sorptivity ((Figure presented.)) and saturated hydraulic conductivity ((Figure presented.)) parameters by field infiltration tests are widespread due to the ease of the experimental protocol and data treatment. The analytical equation proposed by Haverkamp et al. (1994) allows the modelling of the cumulative infiltration process, from which the hydraulic parameters can be estimated. This model depends on both initial and final values of the soil hydraulic conductivity, initial soil sorptivity, the volumetric water content increase ((Figure presented.)) and two infiltration constants, the so-called (Figure presented.) and (Figure presented.) parameters. However, to reduce the number of unknown variables when inverting experimental data, constant parameters such as (Figure presented.) and (Figure presented.) are usually prefixed to 0.6 and 0.75, respectively. In this study, the values of these constants are investigated using numerical infiltration curves for different soil types and initial soil water contents for the van Genuchten-Mualem (vGM) soil hydraulic model. Our new approach considers the long-time expansions of the Haverkamp model, the exact soil properties such as (Figure presented.), (Figure presented.) and initial soil moisture to derive the value of the (Figure presented.) and (Figure presented.) parameters for each specific case. We then generated numerically cumulative infiltration curves using Hydrus-3D software and fitted the long-time expansions to derive the value of the (Figure presented.) and (Figure presented.) parameters. The results show that these parameters are influenced by the initial soil water content and the soil type. However, for initially dry soil conditions, some prefixed values can be proposed instead of the currently used values. If an accurate estimate of (Figure presented.) and (Figure presented.) is the case, then for coarse-textured soils such as sand and loamy sand, we propose the use of 0.9 for both constants. For the remaining soils, the value of 0.75 can be retained for (Figure presented.). For (Figure presented.) constant, 0.75 and 1.5 values can be considered for, intermediate permeable soils (sandy loam and loam) and low permeable soils (silty loam and silt), respectively. We clarify that the results are based on using the vGM model to describe the hydraulic functions of the soil and that the results may differ, and the assumptions may change for other models.

BACKGROUND: Plants have important chemical compounds to protect organisms from many mutagens but they may also have dangerous toxic substances that must be tested before use. Lallemantia iberica has been used by local people for treatment of some diseases but it was never tested for its cell protective and antimutagenic/antirecombinogenic properties. In this study, it was aimed to determine the cytoprotective, antimutagenic/antirecombinogenic, antibacterial, antioxidant and phenolic profile of L. iberica by MTS assay, micronucleus test/somatic mutation recombination test (SMART), disc diffusion method, ABTS/DPPH tests and liquid chromatography (LC), respectively. RESULTS: MTS assay results showed that both of the extracts supported the normal growth of healthy human lymphocytes and there was no significant difference between extracts. Although there was no significant increase in micronucleus concentration (‰) of the cultures treated with ethanol or methanol extracts, methanol extract caused slightly lower micronucleus concentration (12.64 ± 3.65‰) than the ethanol extract (24.46 ± 4.50‰). SMART results showed that ethanol and methanol extracts prevented harmful mitotic recombination. Lallemantia iberica also showed antibacterial activity against all of the strains tested, and the largest inhibition zones were observed with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.9 mm) and Enterobacter aerogenes (13.8 mm). Methanol extracts showed better antioxidant activities (ABTS IC50: 104.07 μg mL−1, DPPH IC50: 58.8 μg mL−1) than ethanol extracts (ABTS IC50: 344.03 μg mL−1, DPPH IC50: 233.7 μg mL−1). According to the LC results, the most abundant phenolic compounds were rutin hydrate (1796.4 ± 62.9 mg kg−1) and p-coumaric acid (228.1 ± 7.60 mg kg−1). CONCLUSION: Lallemantia iberica extracts had cell-protective, antimutagenic/antirecombinogenic, antibacterial and strong antioxidant characteristics in relation to their rich phenolic content.

Potato starch (PS) films reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) were prepared with casting solution, and the effect of montmorillonite (MMT) clay in different proportions (1, 3, 5 and 10 wt%) using nanofiller was established. The films were investigated by Fourier transform ınfrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile strength, opacity, colour, water vapour permeability and solubility. Tensile strength for nanocomposite films depending on the clay content was increased significantly from 0.64 to 1.89 MPa. The water vapour permeability of nanocomposite films was improved compared to the PSMCC blend without MMT. Also, dielectric properties and electrical conductivity of films were studied. The dielectric permittivity (έ), the dielectric loss (ε˝) and the electrical conductivity (σ) increased with increasing MMT content at frequencies between 100 Hz to 10 kHz. This nanocomposite with improved functional properties could be used in potential food packaging materials and electrical applications.

The Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin which is the focus of this study is situated at the south-eastern edge of the Central Anatolian Cenozoic basins (Tuzgölü, Haymana, Çankırı-Çorum, and Sivas), and is divided into two sub-basins, the Aktoprak (AT) and Hacıbekirli-Tepeköy (HT). These sub-basins mainly comprise a stratigraphically discontinuous and laterally variable series, represented by ‘fluvio-lacustrine’ siliciclastic and carbonate sediments deposited over a wide range of environments, including meandering and braided rivers, coastal fluvial and fan deltas, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic shores, dry lake flats, and coal-bearing swamps. In the Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin, higher palaeotopographic conditions existed in the AT because of the uplift of the Central Anatolian Plateau during late Middle Miocene (Serravallian)-early Late Miocene (Tortonian) and the subsequent uplift of the Taurus Mountains in the latest Miocene (Messinian) as deduced in the Tepeköy region (northeast) of the HT sub-basin. Diversity and abundance of archaic pollen (Normapolles) in the pollen biostratigraphy decreased from the Eocene to Oligocene, while forms with advanced angiosperm morphology (post-Normapolles), were observed with the increase in post-Normapolles during the Miocene. The dominance of woody angiosperms in the pollen assemblages, and increasing variety and abundance of ‘open herbs’ and shrub pollen from the Early Miocene to Late Miocene defines an important change in flora. Furthermore, the palaeoclimatic conditions changed from humid-subtropical to warm-temperate during the sediment deposition in the Ereğli-Ulukışla Basin. Recurrent arid phases during the Late Miocene are indicated by the deposition of reddish caliche conglomerates in broad dry lake flats (HT), and evaporites in local playa lakes (AT), respectively.

This paper presents a recently established compressed sensing (CS) and sparse autoencoder (SAE) based on deep learning (DL) method for classification of single and multiple power quality disturbances (PQDs). The CS technique is paying considerable attention in recent years due to below sampling rate comparatively Nyquist sampling. Initially, the CS technique is applied to extract the features of PQD waveforms. The extracted features are applied as inputs to the sparse autoencoder based on DL for classification of nine single and 22 combined classes of PQDs. The DL helps to remove a redundant feature and improves classification performance. Finally, backpropagation is applied to fine-tune the entire network. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been tested with more than 6580 numbers of real and synthetic single and multiple PQD data, and the results are recorded. High correct classification rate is obtained with noise and without noise level. Noise level was considered from 20 to 50 dB. The performance of the proposed technique has been assessed by comparing the results against recently reported methods. Results show that the proposed CS- and SAE-based DL algorithms can be efficiently used for single and multiple PQDs classifications.

In this paper, a real time embedded intelligent recognition system is proposed for diagnosing the power quality problems. The intelligent recognition system has a structure capable of classifying and detecting the power quality problems in real time. Hardware applications of the wavelet transform and decision tree classifier are realized inside the recognition system using with field programmable gate array (FPGA) device. These methods operating as embedded in the FPGA environment provide real-time diagnosis of power quality problems. A new approach of this recognition system is its capability to simultaneously detect a power quality event in the power systems and power quality disturbances occurring on each phase following the event. In this paper, 2 different recognition systems that online and offline are presented. The online recognition system operates in the fields with signal processing and classification structures embedded. In the offline system, the distinctive features of the event signals obtained from the online system are used and these signals are classified in the computer environment by means of the least square support vector machines. A prototype model of the power system is created in the laboratory environment in order to test the FPGA-based online intelligent recognition system, determine accuracy rates and evaluate its performance. Power quality event types are created in wide parameter ranges on this model. Obtained results from both recognition systems indicated the hardware and software designs of our embedded systems are quite effective, fast, and have high success performance.

Onat, Onur; Correia, António A.; Lourenço, Paulo B.; Koçak, Ali
Understanding the out-of-plane response of masonry infill walls and preventing their progressive collapse mechanisms is very important for earthquake-prone countries to prevent loss of life and economic loss. In fact, having a realistic collapse mechanism assessment allows suitable prevention measures to be adopted. With this purpose in mind, two full-scale one-bay one-story substructures of reinforced concrete frames (RCF) with infill walls were tested on a shake table. These 2 specimens were designed to represent the response of a typical RC Frame at the fifth floor of an 8-story building, namely the out-of-plane failure of its infill wall under combined bidirectional seismic load. Both specimens were composed of a single-leaf clay brick infill wall surrounded by the RC Frame. However, while the first specimen corresponds to an unreinforced masonry configuration, the second specimen includes horizontal bed joint reinforcement as a strengthening/retrofitting technique. The main novelty of this study is the application of a bidirectional and simultaneous dynamic loading to the specimen, such that in-plane and out-of-plane effects are evaluated together. This work presents several interesting experimental results, with particular emphasis on the bearing capacity of the specimens against out-of-plane failure. As expected, the in-plane capacity of the reinforced infill specimen is larger than that of the unreinforced infill specimen. Nevertheless, the out-of-plane bearing capacities of the two specimens are very similar, in contrast to their ductility capacity, which is significantly increased in the reinforced masonry specimen. The capacities of the two specimens for both in-plane and out-of-plane directions, as predicted by formulations in the literature, are given. The differences found between these calculations and the results of the tests are discussed, and may possibly be explained by the parameters considered in the different formulations.

Deep learning has emerged as an effective solution to various text mining problems such as document classification and clustering, document summarization, web mining, and sentiment analysis. In this paper, we describe our work on investigating several deep learning models for a binary sentiment classification problem. We used movie reviews in Turkish from the website www.beyazperde.com to train and test the deep learning models. We also report a detailed comparison of the models in terms of accuracy and time performances. Two major deep learning architectures used in this study are Convolutional Neural Networks and Long Short-Term Memory. We built several variants of these models by changing the number of layers, tuning the hyper-parameters, and combining models. Additionally, word embeddings were created by applying the word2vec algorithm with a skip-gram model on a large dataset (∼ 13 M words) composed of movie reviews. We investigate the effect of using the pre-word embeddings with these models. Experimental results have shown that the use of word embeddings with deep neural networks effectively yields performance improvements in terms of run time and accuracy.

Baloglu, Ulas Baran; Demir, Yakup
Analyzing demand in environments with incomplete information is a challenging task. This paper proposes a novel agent-based Pythagorean fuzzy approach for analyzing this kind of demand. First, a Bayesian game is described with a large number of finite players, and this is followed by a Pythagorean fuzzy-based decision mechanism. Unlike the classical methods in the literature, the proposed method in this paper neither assumes nor forecasts the demand in a system. Instead, it tries to analyze the demand when there is limited availability of input data, or processing data are computationally expensive. The study ends with an application of the proposed system to an electricity grid. Electricity prices used as an incentive to construct an agent-based system that efficiently reduces the peak amounts in a smart grid by analyzing the demand. Test results provide evidence that the proposed approach is promising to design demand response systems.
