The discharge of textile effluents into the environment without appropriate treatment poses a serious threat for the aquatic organisms. The present study was undertaken to investigate biochemical response of crayfish Astacus leptodactylus exposed to textile wastewater (TW) treated by indigenous white rot fungus Coriolus versicolor. Glutathione S-transferase (GST), cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1), and acetylcholinesterase (AchE) levels in hepatopancreas and abdomen tissues of crayfish exposed to untreated, treated, and diluted rates (1/10) in both TW during 24 and 96 h were tested. Physiochemical parameters (electrical conductivity (EC), chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, and total dissolved solid (TDS)) of TW were determined before and after treatment. Physiochemical parameters of TW decreased after treatment. The GST activity and AchE were generally increased, but CYP1A1 activity was decreased in hepatopancreas tissue of crayfish exposed to different kinds of untreated TW. After treatment by indigenous white rot fungus (C. versicolor), GST and CYP1A1 activities were returned to control values, while AchE activities were increasing further. In this study, only GST and CYP1A1 activities of A. leptodactylus confirmed the efficiency of TW treatment with C. versicolor.

Stripping voltammetric analysis of dicofol on graphene-modified glassy carbon electrode

Koçak, Berna; Er, Engin; Çelikkan, Huseyin

This study is related to the development of a highly sensitive and selective electrode for the electroanalysis of dicofol (DCF) by the modification of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with graphene (GR) nanosheets. GR was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical reduction of DCF was observed on both bare GCE and GR-modified GCE (GRE). The electrochemical reaction of DCF on GRE was observed to be an adsorption controlled. Differential pulse stripping voltammetry was chosen in the electrochemical analysis of DCF, and two linear calibration ranges from 5.0 x 10(-8) to 5.0 x 10(-7) M and from 5.0 x 10(-7) to 4.2 x 10(-4) M were obtained with a low detection limit of 1.08 x 10(-7) M (N = 5) under the optimized experimental conditions. The electrode developed was successfully used to monitor dicofol in a series of spiked samples.

Sequential extraction of cadmium in different soil phases and plant parts from a former industrialized area

Kaplan, Olcay; Ince, Muharrem; Yaman, Mehmet

Cd concentrations in mobile phases of soil are more representative than total Cd concentration for estimating Cd bioavailability, physicochemical reactivity and mobility. In this study, selective sequential extraction procedures were used to determine Cd in different soil phases. Soil samples and plants grown in these soils were collected from a serpentine and copper-mining area in Maden-Elazig-Turkey. The extracted fractions were exchangeable/carbonate, reducible-iron/manganese oxides, oxidizable-organic matter and sulfides, and residual phases except silicates. Concentrations of Cd in soils and plant samples were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We found that Cd concentrations in the EDTA and NH(2)OH center dot HCl extracts are higher in most soil samples compared to the other extracts. We conclude that Cd levels in mobile phases are unexpectedly high. The observed Cd concentrations are in ranges of 0.03-3.4 mg kg(-1) for soil and 0.02-2.5 mg kg(-1) for plant parts. The percentages of cadmium up to 56% in exchangeable and carbonates fractions were observed to be significantly higher than in those values less than 2% reported in literature. This study has shown that the modified extraction method can be usefully applied to determine Cd concentrations in potentially mobile phase of soil. Furthermore, it was concluded that Brassicasea and Rumex leaves can be used as hyperaccumulator plants because their translocation factor and/or enrichment coefficient values were found to be higher than 1.0.
