Background/aim: Demodex spp. are ectoparasites living in the pilosebaceous units, which feed on the host's sebum and cellular proteins. The protective barrier of the skin consists of sebum secretion, moisture, and the acid mantle. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of skin sebum, moisture, pH levels, and sebum configuration on Demodex spp. density Materials and methods: Forty-five patients who had demodicosis were enrolled in the study group, while the control group consisted of 40 subjects without demodicosis. Body fat percentage, serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels, skin sebum, moisture, and pH levels were measured. Demodex spp. density was determined with a standardized skin surface biopsy. Sebum samples were taken from the forehead and a high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) method was performed on these samples. Subsequently, densitometric analyses were applied to the HPTLC plates. Results: Demodex spp. were found on the cheeks and lived in an alkali environment. Skin sebum and moisture levels were low in all groups. The skin pH levels and cholesterol ester in the sebum configuration were determined to be significantly higher in the group with demodicosis. Conclusion: We suggest that Demodex spp. may use cholesterol ester in the sebum as nutriment. In other words, cholesterol ester may be a suitable growth medium for the proliferation of Demodex spp.

In this paper, an effective classification approach to classify harmonic data has been proposed. In the proposed classifier approach, harmonic data obtained through a 3-phase system have been classified by using k-means and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) models. In order to obtain class details regarding harmonic data, a k-means clustering algorithm has been applied to these data first. The training of the LS-SVM model has been realized with the class details obtained through the k-means algorithm. To increase the efficiency of the LS-SVM model, the regularization and kernel parameters of this model have been determined with a grid search method and the training phase has been realized. Backpropagation neural network and J48 decision tree classifiers have been applied to the same data and results have been obtained for the purpose of comparing the performance of the LS-SVM model. The real data obtained from the output of distribution system have been used to assess the performance of the proposed classifier system. The obtained results and comparisons suggest that the proposed classifier system approach is quite efficient at classifying harmonic data.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2014Scopus SJRQ3First record of F2 hybrid striped bass (Morone chrysops ♀ x Morone saxatilis ♂ x Morone chrysops ♀ x Morone saxatilis ♂) in Kemer Dam Lake
Kizak, Volkan; Güsner, Yusuf
The morphometric and meristic characters of 2 F-2 hybrid striped bass (M. chrysops female x M. saxatilis male x M. chrysops female x M. saxatilis male) from the family Moronidae are described. Two specimens were caught from Kemer Dam Lake. The body of the F-2 hybrid striped bass was elongated, moderately compressed, and scaly. Dorsal surface and sides were silver and black to olive-gray, and the abdomen was white in color. Four or 5 longitudinal broken stripes ran above the lateral line to the caudal fin. The stripes were less visible behind the pectoral fins and below the lateral line. The bodies of the F-2 specimens were deeper than 1/4 the fork length. The 2 dorsal fins were separated entirely. The first dorsal fin had 8-9 spines, and the second dorsal fin had a spine and 13-14 soft rays. The caudal fin was slightly forked. The anal fin had 3 spines with 12-14 soft rays. One tooth patch was present on the anterior of the tongue. According to our results, the fish were F-2 hybrid striped bass offspring of F-1 hybrid striped bass, which can reproduce naturally in Turkey. Morphological criteria showed that the F-2 hybrids tended to resemble white bass (M. chrysops).

Papaver bracteatum Lindl., P orientate L., and P. pseudo-orientale (Fedde) Medw., species of section Oxytona Bernh. in the genus Papaver L., are found widely in the native flora of Turkey. They are commercially important for their high alkaloid content. Because genus Papaver section Oxytona has similar morphological characters, it is not easy to distinguish these species. We used the inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) molecular marker system to determine the molecular characterisation of this section. In this study, 20 ISSR primers have been studied in 180 accessions collected from 5 different regions of Turkey. A total of 82 bands were obtained, of which 80 were polymorphic. Average genetic distance was found to be 0.35, the Shannon index was 0.50, and the polymorphism rate was 96.97%. The primer AT10 had the smallest number of bands, which was 3, while the primers AT19 and AT3 had the greatest number of bands, which was 5. In conclusion, the ISSR marker system can be used for the classification of section Oxytona.

Dikici, Abdullah; Ilhak, Osman Irfan; Çalicioglu, Mehmet
This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of some essential oil compounds for the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 in cig kofte. In experiment 1, a cig kofte batch was inoculated with high levels of E. coli O157: H7 or L. monocytogenes (7.00 log(10) cfu/g) and the batches were divided into 6 groups. Each group was treated with 18 mL/kg of normal saline, cineole, limonene, carvone, linalool, or eugenol. Treatment with carvone, linalool, and eugenol resulted in a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in the numbers of both pathogens. In experiment 2, the cig kofte was inoculated with the same pathogens and each group was treated with 0 (control), 20, 22.5, and 25 mL/kg of eugenol. Increases in concentration did not cause a difference in pathogen reduction. The results showed that eugenol, carvone, and linalool can be used for the inactivation of E. coli O157: H7 and L. monocytogenes in cig kofte or similar foods.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2012Scopus SJRQ3Determination of acute phase proteins aft er experimental Streptococcus iniae infection in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.)
Güleç, Azime Kucukgul; Cengizler, Ibrahim
Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Linnaeus, 1758) were infected with Streptococcus iniae (Cat No: ATCC 29178) and the plasma changes in the acute phase protein (APP) members were examined at different time periods. A total of 72 fish with average body weights of 60 g were used. Fish in the infected group (group I) were intraperitoneally injected with S. iniae at 3.3 x 10(5) colony forming unit (CFU) in 0.1 mL level to the fish. The other group (group II) was subjected to handling stress near the infection. The control group was constituted by providing optimum conditions. On days 7, 14, and 21, blood samples were taken from the caudal veins of the fish under the appropriate anesthesia. The samples were examined on the basis of APPs, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen (FB), serum amyloid A (SAA), and transferrin (TF) and the changes in the plasma values were recorded. The internal and external symptoms seen during the examinations were detected as follows: the color concentration in 1-2 days in the infected groups, irregularity and retardation in the movements of the fish, hyperemic spots on the skin, and bloody effusion in the internal organs. In both of the infected groups, the CRP and SAA plasma values increased on days 7, 14, and 21 (P < 0.05). Remission was observed in the plasma TF levels in the first week; however, aft er the second week the levels reached normal values. Decreases in the FB levels of all of the samples were detected. Based on the data acquired in this study, it was concluded that changes in the plasma levels of the APP members can be used as a significant bioindicator in the pathogenesis of the disease in fish infections.

Boztug, Durmus; Güney, Ozlem; Heizler, Matt; Jonckheere, Raymond C.; Tichomirowa, Marion; Otlu, Nazmi
The Kaman-Kirsehir region intrusions were generated in a post-collisional extensional setting following Cenomanian-Turonian docking of an oceanic island arc, comprising the supra-subduction zone (SSZ) Central Anatolian ophiolite (CAO), onto the Tauride-Anatolide Platform (TAP). These granitoids have been named, from N to S, the Camsari quartz syenite, Hamit quartz syenite, Bayindir nepheline-cancrinite syenite, Durmuslu nepheline-nosean-melanite syenite porphyry and Baranadag quartz monzonite. They intrude the crustal metasediments of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC) and CAO and are unconformably overlain by Upper Paleocene to Lower-Middle Eocene sediments. The single-zircon Pb-207-Pb-206 evaporation age of the Camsari unit is 95.7 +/- 5.1 Ma; those of the Hamit and Baranadag units are indistinguishable with a weighted mean of 74.3 +/- 4.5 Ma. The amphibole 40Ar-39Ar ages of the Hamit and Baranadag units are almost identical with a weighted mean of 72.7 +/- 0.1 Ma. The apatite fission-track age vs elevation plot for the Camsari, Hamit, Durmuslu and Baranadag samples reveals rapid exhumation (>1 km/Ma) between similar to 57 and similar to 61 Ma, consistent with the results of track-length modelling. This Early-Middle Paleocene rapid exhumation is thought to result from uplift triggered by continent (TAP) - continent (Eurasian plate; EP) collision following the closure of Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan (IAE) ocean that also initiated the formation of peripheral foreland basins in central Anatolia. - MakaleYayıncıda açık erişim2009Scopus SJRQ1207Pb-206Pb, 40Ar-39Ar and Apatite Fission-Track Geothermochronology Revealing the Emplacement, Cooling and Exhumation History of the Karacayir Syenite (N Sivas), East-Central Anatolia, Turkey
Boztug, Durmus; Türksever, Esra; Heizler, Matt; Jonckheere, Raymond C.; Tichomirowa, Marion
The Karacayir syenite, intruding the Palaeozoic crustal metamorphics and unconformably overlain by Upper Paleocene to Eocene Tokus formation in the north of Sivas (east-central Anatolia), has been studied with respect to Pb-207-Pb-206 single zircon evaporation, biotite 40Ar-39Ar, and apatite fission-track geothermochronology. Pb-207-Pb-206 single zircon evaporation dating yields an age of 99.0 +/- 11.0 Ma (Cenomanian-Turonian) which is considered to be the intrusion age. Biotite 40Ar-39Ar age determination gives a cooling age of ca. 65 Ma. Apatite fission-track dating, combined with T-t modeling based on track-length distribution data, determines a fast tectonic exhumation with an uplift rate of > 1 mm/a which occurred 58-61 Ma ago. This Middle Paleocene fast tectonic uplift is considered to have resulted from a compressional regime induced by the collision between the Tauride-Anatolide platform (TAP) and the Eurasian plate (EP) along the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan (IAE) suture zone following the closure of the north-dipping subducted IAE ocean which belongs to northern Neo-Tethyan realm. This compressional regime has also formed the peripheral foreland basins in central Anatolia.
