Levels of nickel and chromium in leaves of 14 plant species grown in industrial sites of Gaziantep and surrounding were examined for biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS). The plant leaf samples were collected from different locations with different degrees of metal pollution. The metal levels in the plants were in the ranges of (with mean values) 0.4-28.0 (3.1) mg kg(-1) for Ni and 0.1-6.6 (1.5) mg kg(-1) for Cr. On the other hand, the Ni and Cr levels in the plant leaf samples collected from control) areas were in the ranges of 0.4-2.1 (1.1) and 0.1-1.4 (0.58) mg kg(-1), respectively. It was concluded that Pinus nigra L., Acacia robinia L., Platanus orientalis L., Nerium oleander L., Pyracantha coccinea M.Roem. and Populus nigra L. for Ni, Pinus nigra L., Acacia robinia L., Olea europaea L. and Nerium oleander L. for Cr could be biomonitors. Therefore, it was demonstrated that the plant leaves could be used for heavy metal air pollution monitoring in urban and industrial regions.

- MakaleYalnız künye2012Scopus SJRQ4Use of Atomic Absorption Spectrometry in Assessment of Biomonitor Plants for Lead, Cadmium and Copper Pollution
Kaya, Gokce; Yaman, Mehmet
Eleven plant species were collected from the vicinity of lead-battery plant in the city of Gaziantep, Turkey. Lead, cadmium and copper concentrations in the soil and leaves of plants were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Lead, Cd and Cu concentrations in the soil samples taken from battery area were found to be in the ranges of 304 similar to 602, 0. 4 similar to 0. 44 and 31 similar to 37 mg . kg(-1), respectively. Significantly increased lead concentration up to 2 750 mg . kg(-1) was found in the leaves of Eleagnus angustifolia L. plant. The lead concentrations in the other plant leaves taken from 50 m around battery factory followed the order Ailanthus altissima > Morus sp. > Juglans regia L. > Ficus carica L. > Cydonia oblonga Miller > Prunus x domestica L. The plants, Populus nigra L., Eleagnus angustifolia L. and Salix sp. were found useful for Cd, and the plant, Eleagnus angustifolia L. for Pb, to be considered as potential biomonitor. Especially, leaves of trees and plants taken from the distance of 50 m from battery plant have relatively higher Pb concentrations. Therefore, people who and animals which live in this area and benefit from these soil and plants have vital risks.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2010Scopus SJRQ2Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Determination of Pb, Cd, and Cu in Pinus nigra L. and Eriobotrya japonica Leaves Used as Biomonitors in Environmental Pollution
Kaya, Gokce; Ozcan, Cemile; Yaman, Mehmet
The assessment of trace metal pollution in Gaziantep city-Turkey has been studied using plant leaves of Pinus nigra L. and Eriobotrya japonica as biomonitor. The concentrations up to 3,056 mg Pb kg(-1) in the needles of Pinus nigra L., and 367 ng Cd g(-1) in the leaves of Eriobotrya japonica were determined. The observed Cu concentrations were in range of 1.6-7.1 mg kg(-1). The Pb, Cd, and Cu levels in soils were determined to be in the range of 17-602, 0.142-0.656, and 12-38 mg kg(-1), respectively. It was concluded that Pinus nigra L. can be considered as both biomonitor of atmospheric Pb pollution and hyperaccumulator plant.

- MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ3LEAD, CADMIUM AND COPPER CONCENTRATIONS IN LEAVES OF Nerium oleander L. AND Robinia pseudoacacia L. AS BIOMONITORS OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION
Kaya, Gokce; Okumus, Nuh; Yaman, Mehmet
Pb, Cd and Cu concentrations in leaves of Nerium oleander L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. plants collected from industrial areas in Gaziantep-Turkey were examined for biomonitoring of atmospheric pollution using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Pb levels in the leaves of Nerium oleander L. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. collected at a distance of 50 m from the battery plant were observed to be 2820 and 1860 mg kg(-1), respectively. The Pb, Cd, and Cu concentrations in the soils studied were in the range of 17-602, 0.142-0.656 and 12-38 mg kg(-1), respectively. Lead concentrations described above for plant leaves were found to be about 2000-fold higher than those in the same plants collected from the control area (1.0 mg Pb kg(-1) for both plant species). Similarly, Cd levels in Robinia pseudoacacia L. collected from polluted area were observed to be about 40 times higher than those from control area. Consequently, it is observed that the leaves of Neriurn oleander L. can be used for biomonitoring of Pb, and Robinia pseudoacacia L. for biomonitoring of both Pb and Cd pollution.
