Effect of neuro-linguistic programming on comfort after cesarean: a randomized controlled trial neuro-linguistic programming comfort level cesarean

Doğan, Aysel; Dal, Nursel Alp; Beydag, Kerime Derya

Background: Due to the deterioration in comfort experienced after cesarean section, mothers go through troubled hours, have problems with breastfeeding, and cannot even meet their own and their baby’s needs. This study was conducted to determine the effect of neuro-linguistic programming on mothers’ comfort levels following cesarean section in the postpartum period. Methods: This study was performed from 1 January to 1 September 2023 as a prospective randomized controlled single-blind clinical trial with 100 participants (50 experimental, 50 control). The research data were collected using the Personal Information Form and the Postpartum Comfort Scale. The dependent samples t test and independent samples t test were used in the analysis of research data as well as numbers, percentages, and means. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to evaluate the effect of the NLP more accurately by controlling the pre-test scores. Results: There were statistically significant differences between the mean pretest and posttest postpartum comfort scale scores, physical comfort scores, psycho-spiritual comfort scores, and sociocultural comfort scores of mothers in the intervention group. In this regard, mothers in the intervention group had higher mean postpartum comfort scale scores, physical comfort scores, psycho-spiritual comfort scores, and sociocultural comfort scores in the posttest phase than in the pretest phase. Conclusions: This study revealed that neuro-linguistic programming enhanced the postpartum comfort levels of mothers who underwent cesarean delivery. In this context, it is recommended that nurses and midwives enhance participants’ comfort through the use of neuro-linguistic programming techniques in care processes. Trial registration: NCT05646537.

The relationship between nurses' professional values and caring behaviors

Basit, Gülden; Erkuş Küçükkelepçe, Gülhan; Arslan Şeker, Sevda

Introduction: Professional values give meaning and direction to clinical practices by providing a philosophical framework for nursing practices. The internalization of professional values is quite effective in providing professional service and is very important in terms of service quality. Design: This descriptive study has been conducted to determine the relationship between nurses' professional values and caring behaviors. Methods: A total of 176 nurses participated who worked in hospitals in this study. The data were collected online using the Nurse Information Form, Nurses Professional Values Scale-Revised (NPVS-R), and Caring Behaviors Assessment Tool Nursing Version-Short Form (CBAN-SF). Data analysis was performed using SPSS software, the Mann–Whitney U test, the Kruskall–Wallis test, and the Spearman correlation coefficient. Results: Of the nurses participating in the study, 66.5% are between the ages of 21–30, 80.7% are female, and 71% are university graduates. No statistically significant difference was found regarding professional values between the mean scores from the NPVS-R and CBAN-SF in terms of the nurses' age, gender, position, working style, clinic at which they work, or their educational status. The nurses scored high on the NPVS-R and CBAN. A moderate, significant, and positive relationship was found between nurses' overall scores on the NPVS-R and CBAN-SF. Conclusion: As nurses' perceptions of professional values increase, their perception toward assessing care behaviors also increases. In addition, a relationship exists between nurses' education levels and assessment of care behaviors and between their work experience and their perceptions of professional values. Conducting studies on the subject using different designs is recommended.

Cultural perceptions and clinical experiences of nursing students in Eastern Turkey

    Karatay, G.; Bowers, B.; Karadag, E. B.; Demir, M. C.

Aim: This study explored Turkish nursing students' perceptions of providing care to patients culturally different from themselves. Background: Increasing migration will increase the need for nurses to provide care across cultural groups. Methods: Twenty one students in the second year of a 4-year nursing programme participated in 3 focus groups. Data were analysed using directed content analysis. Research questions were based on Campinha-Bacote's model. Results: Three themes were identified: perceived cultural barriers, perceived cultural facilitators and identifying culturally sensitive actions. Generally, students were able to define culture but were unable to say how culture would affect nursing practice. Discussion: Students were unprepared to practice in a multicultural setting. Cultural awareness is insufficient for determining how to respond to cultural differences. Limitations: The study is limited by its restriction to a single school of nursing and a single curriculum. Conclusions: The multiple, ongoing political, religious and ethnic conflicts will require nurses to provide care to patients from other cultural groups, in some instances to people identified as adversaries to the group the nurse may represent. Understanding cultural differences is insufficient to do this effectively. Implications for nursing education: Learning culturally competent care requires opportunities to provide, be guided through and reflect on care to individuals from different cultural groups. Implications for organizational and public policies: Standards for culturally competent care should be adopted by all care delivery settings. Public and organizational policies openly declaring healthcare settings as cultural safe zones, and explicit organizational commitment to culturally safe care, would set clear expectations for providers and help ensure a positive patient experience.
