In this study, the fungal bioremediation of herbicide diquat dibromide (DD) by white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium was studied. After bioremediation, the reduction in toxicity of the remediated media was evaluated by Daphnia magna as a model organism. For bioremediation studies, flask-level batch experiments were performed at different DD concentrations (10, 20 and 50 ppm) under static and agitated conditions. The highest reduction rates of chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon were determined as 85.92 (for 20 ppm DD) and 87.46% (for 10 ppm DD), respectively under agitated conditions. After bioremediation, D. magna bioassay was used for toxicity assessment during 24, 48 and 72-h periods. In current study, it was observed that P. chrysosporium has very effective bioremediation capacity for diquat dibromide. The D. magna bioassay revealed that P. chrysosporium provides effective reduction in toxicity of diquat dibromide.

Onder Erguven, Gokhan; Demirci, Ulas
Background: Pesticides are applied directly on the soil or on the vegetation, and thus, they can reach the receiving environment easily. In this way, environmental damage that stems from pesticides also affects public health and the natural habitat. Pesticides are one of the most harmful pollutant groups in terms of human health, fauna and the environment. They penetrate the application field and the applicator right after the application and start to show adverse effects. Methods: The bioremediation of the Imidacloprid (C9H10ClN5O2) insecticide, which is used commonly in Mediterranean climate, was compared with some soil bacteria in artificially prepared fields. For this purpose, firstly, it was determined whether the soil samples taken from a field where cotton was cultivated in Adana in Turkey was suitable for bioremediation. Then, the bacteria were isolated from these soils with the 16sRNA method. The enhanced microbial consortia of these isolated bacteria were inoculated to the artificial fields, meanwhile, the recommended concentrations of Imidacloprid were added to these agricultural fields. Imidacloprid, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) measurements were performed every day for two weeks on the filtrate samples taken from the artificial fields. Results: As a result of the monitoring, it was determined that Ochrobactrum thiophenivorans (Ot) and Sphingomonas melonis (Sm) species and their mixtures could eliminate the Imidacloprid pesticide within two weeks’ time. The removal efficiencies were 100% for active ingredient for each bacterium and their mixtures while COD were 97% and 96% for Ot. and Sm., respectively. TOC and BOD5 removal rates were 97% for both types and their mixtures in one or two-week period. Mixture of Ot and Sm shows 98.5% for COD, BOD5 parameters and 97.5% for TOC parameter. Conclusions: The results that will be obtained will help in the rehabilitation of the receiving environments that are exposed to pesticides in our country and take precautions to avoid the accumulation of pesticides in the body of the humans who are at the top of the food chain.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2018Scopus SJRQ3The chemical and biochemical oxygen demand reduction by armillaria tabescens in malathion supplemented culture medium
Yildirim, N.; Erguven, G.O.; Adar, E.
The extensive use of pesticides for controlling insects has been widely used in agricultural activities. However, the indiscriminate use of the pesticides has inflicted serious harmful problems to humans in the ecosystem. Our study aims to evaluating the capacity of Armillaria tabescens to remove the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) at different concentration of malathion insecticide (50, 100 and 150 ppm) under agitated (130 rpm) submerged culture conditions at 27 °C after 8 and 15 days. According to our results, A. tabescens has achieved COD reduction as 52.39, 27.24, and 38.30% at concentration of 50, 100 and 150 ppm respectively on 15 days. The BOD5 reduction rates were found as 78.2, 74.76 and 81.26% at 50, 100 and 150 ppm concentration respectively at the end of the 15th days. At the end of this time period, the dried biomass of A. tabescens was weighted and we have suggested that malathion in medium reduced the biomass production compared the control group (Sabouraud dextrose broth + A. tabescens). Our experiments have focused that; A. tabescens could be an alternative and useful fungus for bioremediation of wastewater containing malathion insecticide.

Erguven, Gokhan Onder
In this study, we aimed to find out the biodegradation efficiency of some soil fungi types on herbicide acetochlor with acetochlor active material, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and total organic carbon (TOC) parameters. We also try to determine the population dynamics of these fungi via turbidity. The fungi cultures were isolated from agricultural field in in Thrace region of Turkey. Each fungi enriched in malt extract broth media and 1 mL of these enriched media was inoculated into 100 mL of acetochlor solutions that suggested for using application concantrations in agricultural field for farmers (11000 mg L−1) for sunflower and corn agriculture. Bioremediation results of acetochlor have shown different results according to the types of fungi. Our results indicate that Tolypocladium geodes and Cordyceps cicadae might be used in acetochlor bioremediation with a significant acetochlor, COD, TOC and BOD5 reduction and can be used for rehabilitation of agricultural fields or receiving environments for removal the opposite effects of acetochlor or other herbicides.

Ergüven, Gökhan Önder
In this study, the biodegradation of ethalfluralin (C13H14F3N3O4), which is the most preferred herbicide in sunflower farming in Thrace region in Turkey, is investigated. Bacteria and fungi were isolated in soil samples obtained in Thrace region, and a mixed culture was prepared using equal volume of microorganism cultures. Five different apparatuses, including sterile agricultural soil were setup and ethalfluralin in 1,500 µg/L concentration was added to each apparatus, and they were watered for 6 weeks with sterilized tap water. Drained water was then collected, and the filtrates were measured for chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total organic carbon (TOC) and ethalfluralin. Furthermore, pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration were measured. Study results demonstrated that the highest biodegradation was observed in the soil sample that contained 10 mL mixed microorganism culture and ethalfluralin. In this filtrate, ethalfluralin, COD, BOD5 and TOC removals were measured as 92%, 85%, 82% and 97% respectively. The DO level remained between 3.00 and 4.50 mg/L in the first 3 weeks for all cultures. After the third week, it increased to 5.8 mg/L in the 5 mL culture mixture and to 7.1 mg/L in the 2 mL culture mixture. pH results demonstrated, an increase during the first 3 weeks and pH values decreased for all culture mixture media due to the formation of carbonic acid.
