An Investigation of the Variability of Short-Term Drought with SPEI-Based Severity, Duration and Magnitude Parameters in a Transboundary Basin

Akbas, Ergun; Acar, Ramazan; Eşit, Musa; Koycegiz, Cihangir

Climate change-induced variability in the water budget leads to significant drought events. In this study, severity, duration, and magnitude parameters obtained from 1-month and 3-month series of the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) were used to investigate short-term drought from different perspectives. The lower part of the Euphrates-Tigris Basin, which is a transboundary basin, was preferred as the study area within the borders of Türkiye. In this study, monthly total precipitation and monthly mean temperature data for the period 1963–2021 were used. Both graphical (Şen Innovative Trend Analysis) and statistical (Mann–Kendall, Spearman’s Rho, Sen’s Slope Estimator) trend analysis methods were applied to detect, categorize, and analyze the variability of drought. The Combination of Wilcoxon Test and Scatter Diagram (CWTSD) method, which offers both graphical and statistical trend analysis capabilities, was preferred to enhance consistency and facilitate comparison of results. According to the findings, more severe droughts are observed in the eastern part of the basin compared to the western part. Across the basin, severity and magnitude are decreasing, while duration is increasing. The increase in duration indicates that droughts are shifting from short-term to long-term periods. This situation is of great importance in terms of planning agricultural strategies.

The Relationship Between Agricultural Carbon Dioxide Emission and Agriculture Subsectors Production: Static Panel Data Approach

Peker, Ayşe Esra; Akdağ, Nuran; Veysikarani, Dilek; Kaya, Mustafa Göktuğ; Kaya, Perihan Hazel

Human activities contribute to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, which have serious environmental, economic, and social effects of climate change. This has sparked efforts to find large-scale solutions to eliminate the causes of climate change. While these solutions mainly involve reducing carbon emissions through global agreements, individual nations have also taken steps to cut emissions by changing production methods, such as irrigation and fertilisation, to ensure the efficient and effective use of resources and the proper storage and transportation of food. As a result, the agricultural sector is both a source and a victim of this process. The sector’s environmental impact varies due to differing production techniques and energy needs across various sub-sectors like vegetable, grain, and fruit production. Increases in carbon dioxide emissions in this sector are connected not only to production activities but also to demographic and social factors, such as the rural population proportion. This study aims to explore the effect of vegetable, grain, and fruit production, as well as the rural population ratio, on carbon dioxide emissions. To achieve this, a static panel data analysis was conducted across 21 European countries from 1970 to 2023. According to the research findings, vegetable production increases carbon emissions from agriculture. However, it was found to have a significant, albeit borderline, impact on fruit production and to reduce carbon emissions. These results demonstrate that agriculture's contribution to carbon dioxide emissions varies by sub-sector and provide valuable information for developing sustainable agricultural policies.

Data-Driven Prediction of Climate Variables in Agricultural Cities of India With Hybrid GA-TCN-LSTM Model

    Utku, Anil

Accurate prediction of climate variables is important in reducing the effects of natural disasters and taking preventive measures for agriculture and food security, energy sector, public health, and water resources management. For agricultural production, it is essential for producers to determine strategies for their agricultural activities and to increase agricultural productivity. Issues such as determining planting and harvest times, determining pesticides to be used against agricultural pests, selecting products to be planted, irrigation, and sustainable agriculture are directly related to climate variables. In this study, a GA-TCN-LSTM hybrid prediction model was created to determine climate variables such as relative humidity, temperature, wind speed, and dew point in Bhopal, Indore, Kanpur, Ludhiana, and Patna, which are among the prominent cities of India in terms of agricultural production. The hyper-parameters of the developed model using the temporal convolutional networks (TCN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) were optimized with the genetic algorithm (GA), and the GA-TCN-LSTM hybrid model was created. GA-TCN-LSTM was extensively compared with the base TCN-LSTM, convolutional neural network (CNN), LSTM, TCN, and CNN-LSTM. The compared models were tested using approximately 15 years of hourly, up-to-date, and real-time data of the cities. Experiments showed that GA-TCN-LSTM outperformed the compared models and had above 0.9 R-Squared (R2) for the majority of cities and climate variables.

Bayesian Best–Worst Method Application for Assessing the Potential Effecting Areas of Climate Change: A Case Study in Turkey

Konurhan, Zekeriya; Yücesan, Melih; Gul, Muhammet

‘Climate Change’ is a term used to refer to global changes in the Earth's average temperature and the consequences of changes in temperature. More clearly, it demonstrates changes in temperature and weather patterns over time. The emergence of this situation directly or indirectly affects irreparable damages and major/minor disasters in many areas. Determining the answer to the question of which of these areas has an impact at what level of importance will provide guidance on which one should be prioritized in carrying out an effective treatment. Therefore, in this study, this problem is ad-dressed as a multi-criteria decision problem using Bayesian Best–Worst Method. The potential impacts have been categorized under 8 main areas and weighted via participating of 8 competent experts (geography, emergency disaster management, geomorphologist, climate scientist etc.) in the field of climate change. The study results determined that B (Ecosystems and Water Resources) has the most critical impact area, with 0.200. The least essential domain is G4 (Adaptation and Resilience Strategies in the Tourism Industry), which weighs 0.012. The results showed that they provide important clues regarding which impacts should be addressed first.

Background: Climate change is one of the most significant issues of today. This study aims to investigate climate change awareness, anxiety, and hope levels among university students who participate in activities at youth offices and examine the relationship between them. Methods: The study population consisted of student members who were actively engaged in Youth Offices located within four public universities in the Eastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye. The study sample includes 881 volunteer participants, consisting of 345 (39.2%) male and 536 (60.8%) female students. The data were analyzed employing IBM SPSS 25. Statistical analyses included the independent samples t-test, one-way ANOVA, Tukey’s post-hoc test, and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results: The results indicate that university students have moderate levels of climate change awareness, anxiety, and hope. A positive correlation was observed, wherein higher awareness levels were associated with increased anxiety and hope. Male students demonstrated higher awareness and anxiety levels than female students. Among participants, students from 1. University exhibited the highest levels of climate change awareness, anxiety, and hope. Additionally, graduate students and individuals living in rural areas showed higher awareness and anxiety levels, whereas individuals with better economic conditions exhibited lower anxiety and hope levels. Conclusion: Given these results, it is recommended that universities develop and implement educational programs to enhance climate change awareness and extend these initiatives across campuses.

The impact of global value chains on climate change

    Ateş, Erdem; Şanlısoy, Selim

Climate change can be defined as the increase in average temperatures due to rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, predominantly due to human activities. Carbon emissions have increased at an alarming rate with the emergence of globalization, with its accompanying global value chain, and the consequent increase in global production volume with its polluting sectors. To combat this alarming situation, production with environmentally friendly technologies has emerged recently, and developing countries are embracing more and more costly environmentally friendly production techniques, although they are disadvantaged when it comes to covering the costs. However, it has been observed that they stay behind in this race to adopt environmentally friendly techniques compared to developed countries. The aim of the study, which is a novel contribution to the existing literature, is to examine the relationship between the global value chain and climate change by considering the distinction between developed and developing countries. The study used the data of 156 countries from the years 2000–2018. The results obtained from the generalized method of moments (GMM) show that participation in global value chains has different effects in developed and developing countries regarding carbon emissions. When the level of participation in GVC (global value chain) and FVA (foreign value added) increases, countries’ carbon emissions decrease, and it increases when the DVA (domestic value added) level increases. As a result, in particular, developing countries should green their production methods, and for this purpose, financial support mechanisms should be established.

Regional Climate Change and Drought Dynamics in Tunceli, Turkey: Insights from Drought Indices

    Korkmaz, Meral; Kuriqi, Alban

Global warming and climate change are causing temperatures to rise, which is having a negative impact on water resources. Climate change is a worldwide problem that affects and will continue to affect the frequency and intensity of natural disasters in many regions of the world. Tunceli region in Turkey, which until 10 years ago was known as an environmentally friendly city with abundant water resources and frequent rainfall, is experiencing a decrease in precipitation during the snowy winter season. This situation has made the investigation of climate change impacts an important issue in the region. Therefore, effective climate change adaptation strategies need to be developed. To determine these strategies, in this study, we assessed long-term drought conditions using multiple drought indices such as Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI), Normal Precipitation Index (PNI), and Aridity Index (AI). The SPI and RDI analyses were performed in annual reference periods on a time scale of 3, 6, 9, and 12 months using temperature, precipitation, and evaporation data. Consequently, the SPI and RDI results were compared, and both indices show similar behavior in dry, wet, and normal seasons. Nevertheless, RDI shows less variation between different time scales, which is an advantage over SPI and is probably due to the inclusion of potential evapotranspiration in RDI. The variations in PNI between humid and dry sub-humid categorizations throughout the years, combined with the AI results, indicate that the Tunceli region predominantly experiences a climate ranging from dry sub-humid to semi-arid. This study could help decision-makers take effective measures to become more resilient to climate change in temperate climate regions and take important steps toward sustainable water resources management.
