- MakaleYalnız künye2016Scopus SJRQ3Combined effects of physicochemical variables (pH and salinity) on sperm motility: characterization of sperm motility in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax
Ögretmen, F.; Inanan, B. E.; Kutluyer, F.
Gamete activation in fish is an important step in terms of artificial fertilization of oocytes, cryopreservation studies and other experimental manipulations. Salinity and pH differences in activation media affect to sperm motility and fertilizing ability. These experiments were therefore designed to investigate the combined effects of pH (range 5.0-9.0) and salinity (20, 30, 37, and 45 parts per thousand) of activation media on sperm motility of European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax. The best results were obtained at salinity 37 parts per thousand and a pH of 9.0. Our results also demonstrated that non-progressive motility at salinity 45 parts per thousand was observed in the range of 5.0-9.0 pH. In conclusion, spermatozoa can be motile at a wide range of pH and salinity values although the percent of motile spermatozoa and motility duration are negatively affected by low pH values.

The compensatory growth response of the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) that faced cycling starvation and restricted ration was assessed. Juveniles (10.5g) were stocked into 15 tanks at a density of 25 fish per tank. Five different feeding regimes were tested on triplicate groups of fish: CSatiation: control fed for 60days without deprivation, CRestricted: 25% restricted feeding, S-R: 1day starvation then 4days CRestricted feeding, R-F: 1day CRestricted feeding then 4days CSatiation feeding, and, finally, S-F: 1day starvation then 4days CSatiation feeding. The specific growth rate of fish in the CSatiation (2.5 +/- 0.06%day-1), S-F (2.5 +/- 0.11%day-1) and R-F (2.4 +/- 0.18%day-1) were significantly higher than that of CRestricted (2.2 +/- 0.05%day-1) or S-R (2.0 +/- 0.01%day-1). Fish in S-F group were able to achieve catching up with the CSatiation. There was no significant difference in feed conversion rates but R-F and S-F consumed approximately 34% more feed than CSatiation following the first re-feeding day. Although, the highest lipid content was observed in CSatiation (14.4%), S-R (33.3% dry matter) had the highest water content compared with the CSatiation and CRestricted (37.8% and 36.9% dry matter respectively). In conclusion, it may be concluded that sea bass has rapid response to cycling starvation/re-feeding and that a 25% restricted feeding ratio is insufficient to invoke a compensatory growth response in sea bass.

- MakaleYalnız künye2010Scopus SJRQ4Is it Possible to Transform Hatchery-Reared Abnormal Juveniles of Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L. 1758) into Normal Individuals?
Kayim, M.; Can, E.; Güner, Y.
Lordosis, which is one of the skeletal deformations, was frequently encountered in the culture of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L. 1758) and it affects the biological performance and marketing image of the fish negatively. Thus it causes big economic losses. In larger natural environments, this abnormality in wild-caught individual is rare, whereas the case is the other way round in hatchery-reared sea bass. This problem can be caused by swim bladder malformations, environmental conditions, bacterial factors, water flow rate and swimming activity. However, many researchers reported that all of these factors cause these malformations in different regions of the skeletal system, commonly known as V-shaped curvatures. But in this study, it is not aimed to investigate the possible causes of the observed abnormalities. We focused on whether the abnormal individuals can be transformed into individuals with normal skeletal systems. In this study, a total number of 5636 juvenile individuals (0.09-1.93 g of live weight) were used. Lordosis rates were identified between the days 54 and 110 by randomly taking at least 30 samples from every group on a weekly basis, at triplicate. In this study, 100% of the individuals with this type of deformation were successfully transformed into individuals with the normal skeletal system in a large volume and rectangular ponds with semi-intensive rearing method.
